Well I think that to let the Ferin be allowed in society, he might want to turn himself and other ferins info humans. But it most probably won’t work since in later drawings and auroraspoileralis’ he still appears as a ferin
Yeah, that’s what I think too.
Lion boi wants to be a normal boi.
It’s not gonna work, because self-acceptance and self-love.
Also, if there was a cure the fancy science peope from Erins uni would have found it already.
I like how a lot of the runes are crossed out, and in one spot they practiced writing one rune a few times. Basic human error is something so rarely seen in fiction, so I like seeing it here; really drives home the fact that magic is incredibly unfamiliar to this person.
Maybe this person put control runes in place to prevent the spell from triggering on its own… they’d have to do the same with the lacrima, so they might already know the process..? (Yes I’m answering my own question)
Iirc, the runic stuff is like programming. If you put a random name in it, it won’t do a thing. It’s like writing a formula without defining variables – functionally useless and more for practice.
The lore page on magic says that if great runes are inscribed on an inanimate object, that object passively funnels an enormous amount of the corresponding element’s energy into itself, potentially causing a volatile buildup. I’m guessing the spell this person is trying to perform requires a life rune somewhere, as such an intense spell must require a large amount of energy. In order to practice writing the spell, they’d need to practice writing a life rune, which would mean the wall they wrote on would absorb a dangerous amount of raw life energy just waiting to burst forth.
Yeah the Lore page says even great runes need to be activated by an act of will (“When activated by the force of a mortal will (and it must be willfully activated and deactivated in order to function) this rune”). It just emphasizes the need to make sure to deactivate them also. Also none of the Runes that we can see are one of the five great runes as far as I can tell.
From what I can work out, the book says “hazards of chimerical mutation”, but I can’t make sense of the runes on the stone. The top left part looks like “-inini-ecstral”, and the bottom looks like “cla- -ecom”. Also, it seems this language uses the same character (or two very similar ones) for ‘s’ and ‘z’.
Oh I think I was wrong. I said that Falst might not have made the monster, but that page in the textbook looks like it is about mutations, so yea, he probably made the monster.
Also, since there aren’t any other ferin with him, I accuse him of being selfish and only curing himself. Of course, I could be wrong. But wouldn’t it be simpler to make the illusion of not being a ferin first, so he can get better access to the stuff he needs for a cure, or would that even work in this magic system?
I notice that nobody else has thought of this so I guess I’m finally commenting to give my own theory. What if Falst isn’t trying to fix himself but mutate the villagers? He’s been practicing on smaller animals and he’s finally working his way up to humans. Why? If the humans are all mutated too, then they can’t reasonably reject him anymore. Or maybe murder. It could be that.
My mind keeps going back and forth as to whether Falst created the chimeras in the forrest. He did look genuinely surprised at the chimera attack on the gang but as seen here he is fooling around with life magic, maybe those chimeras were tests.
Great detail of his previous attempts to draw runes and improvements overtime. Those scratches could have been out of frustration but could also have been done out of safety, destroying wrong or poorly written runes to ensure they can’t backfire later.
I agree it’s possible he’s looking for a cure for the Ferin curse but he seems fairly comfortable about his nature from his talk with Kendal, maybe he just wants to be able to use magic like the other races.
Now that I think about it the Ferin bear some similarities with the Ancients: physically strong, despite being shorter; magically inert and resistant to magic; but, if this is any indication, can still utilise runic magic and lacrimas.
Maybe this is Falst’s ambition, to make runic magic and lacrima use commonplace among Ferin so that they can utilise it like the Ancients to build their own cities and societies. Would make for a nice bit of irony too; one of the newest races on the planet drawing inspiration, and taking the place of, the oldest.
YEAH, 😎
1. I defer, so that is not my call.
2. YOU think I LOOK at that shit, like what I should build a nice fireplace and hang it over, “really ties the room together”. GODDAM this sleeve is not signing ART by pissing on it.
Ooh, what’s he doing? I hope he brings Erin’s bag back when he’s done.
Also, as someone who practices with old cursive handwriting practice sheets every single day, I appreciate the handwriting practice reference.
By the length of the spell, whatever it is has to be important. Attempting to revive the dead, perhaps?
Hello fellow mum club members!
Hello! We should have a Mum Club reunion at the start of every chapter!
Great idea ??
did falst just. teach himself how to write
By the picture , I think that the page was about ferins or shapeshifting. Maybe he wants to be wants himself or other ferin be allowed in society?

Hey,I was thinking the same thing!
Also, hopefully I don’t sound annoying here, but could I join the Mum club?
Yes! Welcome to the Mum club!
Yay, thank you! I am honored to be welcomed into such a prodigious society.
Yeah, that’s what I think too.

R U N E S!! So much to decode! (Granted, the fandub Discord already deciphered most of it. So, yeah)
That being said, speculation time: is Falst trying to figure out how the ferin curse works or is it for some other dastardly shenanigans?
… Well I got a bad feeling about this now
This ability you have to make every single page a teeny tiny cliffhanger is both Wonderful and Very Very *pout*
Yeah, that crystal is definitely a lacrima. Attempted ferin ‘cure’, here we come…
I like how a lot of the runes are crossed out, and in one spot they practiced writing one rune a few times. Basic human error is something so rarely seen in fiction, so I like seeing it here; really drives home the fact that magic is incredibly unfamiliar to this person.
Wait… how is the wall not activating the runes? I know how the book isn’t; powdered soulcrystal ink. Is the wall made of soulcrystal?
Maybe this person put control runes in place to prevent the spell from triggering on its own… they’d have to do the same with the lacrima, so they might already know the process..? (Yes I’m answering my own question)

its cause he isn’t a mage, can’t activate them if you aren’t one.

Is it wrong that I find this almost cute?

Excellent name. Matt Smith was MY doctor, so I heard your name in his voice
Why do I think he’s trying to turn himself into a human for some reason?
Read the lore page on ferin… it should hopefully become apparent why
Erin: How tall are you?
Kendal: 6’4″.
Erin: How tall are you?
Falst: I am five foot, two inches, and three quarters.
Falst: I WILL DESTROY YOU
Why is no one talking about the fact that there are canonically catboys in this universe
No. No no no. This comment is evil.

4 years in, and I still think there’s some unique and interesting connection between the Ferins and the Ancients, despite lack of proof.
TL;DR: Thief creep is plagiarizing Hubris mcNerdman’s notes. Turns out even fantasy worlds have academic dishonesty.
Alt text: I never let anyone see my older art either
