. Kendal leaps backward as Rakhn lunges forward, slamming his sword down and cracking the stone.
. “Well now,” he says as lava bubbles around his sword.” Slow to speak, but quick on your feet.” He pulls up his sword with a grin. “I hope you will not run, godling. I think I should like to get to know you better.” Kendal watches Rakhn, determined.
. A boom echoes from Rakhn’s throne as Falst races along the glass bridge.
I’m probably not going to write the rest of the pages this week, it’s ERB week so I’ll be busy. I don’t have school today tho, so yay ig
It was in Joseph Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey” theory, and I know it’s in William Morris’s 1896 The Well at the World’s End, an early low-fantasy epic. And of course, Journey to the West!
In my head I see Rakhn wearing a smoky black ten-gallon (tengelon) hat stand up and pull out an appropriated sized Desert Eagle pistol and cheerfully yell “Dance little man Dance!” as he fires at Kendal’s feet. Poor Kendal desperately hopping around trying not to get his feet blown off.
Never mind, the healthbar’s back on the menu. Wonder what kinda moveset Rakhn’s gonna bring. Probably keeping the Lava Attack™s for when he doesn’t need to use his mouth to have a friendly conversation with the person he is currently playing into the hand of.
Actually, further to that, if Aurora was a fighting game, what kinda Big Finish Move do you think each member of the gang has? I have a few ideas for people we’ve seen use Big Finishers in the comic but I’m interested to hear you fellows’ opinions on the matter.
Thinking about the Tess one, just the idea of her stunning someone and then jumping up high to just FROM THE TOP ROPE ELBOW DROP with lightning power that would make Tynan briefly reconsider is for some reason just supremely hilarious to me, especially considering that Tess would no doubt be grinning like the sun through the entire moment. Bonus points for a vocal line on the way down.
That idea of Magus Erin shutting someone down with six elements to the point of burning himself out feels like a really cool mechanic if you had to play him, sorta like having to watch the amount that you’re channeling and facing penalties for using too many big attacks. The separate dynamic of Void Erin as the puppet feels like there would be a momentary animation riffing on the time Erin negotiated with the VD mid zombie cave adventure, with the apparition mimicking the sigil curling itself around Erin before delivering the blast.
That’s actually really cool, resource management is a GOOD challenge in a video game, IMHO. Also reminds me of my Sindungwe College Wizards, they uniquely can use HP as well as FP to power spells, and have a number of tools to offset what a bad idea this is. Haven’t thought about my homebrew fantasy TTRPG’s customized magic system in years…
Is FP a reference to flower points in old paper mario games? I’m not really familiar with many rpg systems, so sorry if it’s a common thing, I just wanted to see if there’s another person who likes paper mario here.
Oh dang you have a homebrew TTRPG system as well? what are the odds? Mine actually has a similar mechanic, but for Willpower (WP) after Mental Power (MP). It’s a big thing with my system to keep your WP up, but it’s the only thing my casters can use after their reserves of MP are depleted. The problem is that WP is also used as a last stand resource, so the wizards need to balance Hurting People Harder against Having More Rounds to Run Away.
Is Rakhn the type who only converses in parallel to his sword swings? Can Kendal distract this boisterous tectonic boil so completely that he fails to notice a piece of his heart just went missing? Does Falst have literally any of the equipment required to remove a chunk of the fireseed whist keeping his fur, skin, muscles & bones intact? Are the local Ignans too busy playing Crokinole in the public mess hall to notice that something is amiss?
Tune In This Week And Find Out!
It has been two years. Where did I go? On the bright side, having two years of content to binge is not a bad situation to find oneself in…
Absolutely IN LOVE with all the panels of the glass-volcano-crater city!! The sense of scale is awesome, it reminds me of the huge architecture from Souls game locations. Also the way the light hits the glass? Gorgeous. Intimidating. Such a big fan of this volcano art.
“I should like to get to know you better.” Ooooh, I don’t think so….
Why do I have the feeling this heist isn’t going to come off smoothly? Maybe it’s that Rakhn knows he’s a last resort for people. He’s already on his guard. Just makes it so likely these two are going to need rescuing.
Oh, hey, cool, yeah I like the idea of someone whose whole mindset is, “People don’t come to me for anything unless they’re desperate,” you can put a character who thinks like that in a wide range of situations and there will always be a lot of potential!
So I’ve been digging through the Tumblr asks and I came upon one about one on Erin’s journal entry on the Storm in 1.4.1. The specific phrase, “Dal an-Rakhn”, translates as “Hand of Chaos.” Red confirmed in the tumblr ask D1/M5/2023, that “Rakhn” translates directly to “Chaos”. I think it *might* be safe to assume that Rakhn isn’t the first name Mr I Wasn’t Always A Volcano had. This summons a new, more interesting question, though…
There once was a Volcano Daddy,
Who’s determined to play the baddie.
He swings without care,
Kendal jumps in the air–
He’s in for another fight, poor laddie.
MAN but do I want to know what material those bridges are actually made out of. The colour gives me the impression of glass, but I don’t quite feel like that could be the case? Given that it’s a volcano and all.
For mobile readers.

Bluesky Text: aaaaand here we go
Pulling all-nighters for finals has its perks!! I get to catch these when they come out
but sleep is good for u!!!!
Grades are more important
Science actually proves that sleeps is better for grades
unfortunately sleep doesnt help you finish project finals youve been putting off 🙁
yes it is my fault but shhhhh
This is how you become best friends, that’s what the Like a Dragon games taught me.
All we need is a Hannya back tattoo and we’ll be all set. That and a karaoke contest.
It was in Joseph Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey” theory, and I know it’s in William Morris’s 1896 The Well at the World’s End, an early low-fantasy epic. And of course, Journey to the West!
Looks like it’s all going as planned
Why would you say that? That practically guarantees things going awry.
Mwahahahaha
Not sure it works if you’re doing it on purpose.
Place your bets people! Will Kendal or falst mess up first? Find out next time!
That escalated quickly. ‘Slow to speak, but quick on your feet.’ Yeah, that’s accurate. Anyone else get the feeling that he’s testing Kendal?
I got those vibes as well
In my head I see Rakhn wearing a smoky black ten-gallon (tengelon) hat stand up and pull out an appropriated sized Desert Eagle pistol and cheerfully yell “Dance little man Dance!” as he fires at Kendal’s feet. Poor Kendal desperately hopping around trying not to get his feet blown off.
Rakhn wanted a fight, Kendal asked for a conversation. As a compromise, this is a conversational fight.
Rakhn seems to be the monologueing type
Which leaves Falst time to run, while they sell their own hype
Boom, there it is
Never mind, the healthbar’s back on the menu. Wonder what kinda moveset Rakhn’s gonna bring. Probably keeping the Lava Attack™s for when he doesn’t need to use his mouth to have a friendly conversation with the person he is currently playing into the hand of.

The obvious ones (IMO)
Kendal – Starfire Burst
VoidErin – Void Blast from Hell
Demon Dainix – Demon Eats
Tess – One Million Volt Bodyslam
The others:
Falst – Stone Lacrima: Earthquake
Alinua – Mountaincrusher Tree
Erin – Full Elemental Combo: Overchannel
Dainix – Demon’s Hand
Thinking about the Tess one, just the idea of her stunning someone and then jumping up high to just FROM THE TOP ROPE ELBOW DROP with lightning power that would make Tynan briefly reconsider is for some reason just supremely hilarious to me, especially considering that Tess would no doubt be grinning like the sun through the entire moment. I think Tess would do the classic “punches you into the stratosphere, jumps up, and slams you back down into the ground”
Kendal impales you and sets his sword on starfire
Erin nukes you with an elemental storm
Alinua grows a tree at you, but like, violently. And it’s a really big tree
Dainix fucking eats you
You. I like you.
A distant rumble
He can’t worry, he must run
Working against time
That’s… one of the ways of getting to know one another, yes!
Run Falst, RUN!!!
Rakhn no, that is not how you make friends
LOL. I’m not sure hitting him with a balled up newspaper’s gonna work but I like the image.
Oh I dunno. Hitting friends while they are also trying to hit you IS a way to be better friends…
I dunno, I made a surprising number of good friends by throwing them! (Respectfully.)
Let. Him. REST!!
I choose to believe Rakhn is flirting here.
i feel like this plan is working too well to last for long, something is gonna have to go wrong soon
Kendal is so fucking TIRED bro look at his eyes he’s so done
I feel like this is a test. Kendal isn’t ready for an exam…
TL;DR: Speak with your sword.
I honestly feel like this is Rakhn just agreeing to Kendal’s proposal. Combat COULD be seen as a form of conversation.
100%, this is just how Volcano Daddy rolls
Volcano Daddy is an apt nickname for Rakhn
Is Rakhn the type who only converses in parallel to his sword swings? Can Kendal distract this boisterous tectonic boil so completely that he fails to notice a piece of his heart just went missing? Does Falst have literally any of the equipment required to remove a chunk of the fireseed whist keeping his fur, skin, muscles & bones intact? Lol Crokinole reference
Time for some ole fashioned Warrior to warrior conversation
Yep, this is about what I thought a conversation would look like for Volcano Daddy

Falst: Yeah, that’s the sound of Kendal Kendal-ing
*Cue TOTK Ganondorf theme*

I guess a fight is how one would converse with a volcano.
Given that it’s a volcano and all.
volcanic glass? made especially god strong? just a guess
i think it would be hilarious if we got defeat means friendship from this guy.
this is my formal request.
Violence is never the answer, children. Violence is the question, the answer is yes.
Well this got interesting
