“ooh this’ll be cool, I’ll set this arc in a complex urban environment filled with background characters and end it with a mass evacuation, that won’t be a crushingly frustrating thing for me to draw at ALL”
Their fight continues!
As those folks evacuate.
Tynan looks perplexed.
I was very confused by the last three panels until I remembered that it’s read left to right and not right to left.
And, after 40 days and 7 scene changes, we finally get back to Kendal and Tynan.
The guy with the binoculars: Blondie guy is still holding!
The crowd: *cheers*
The theme music of Flash Gordon from Queen starts playing.
“Kendal, aaaah. He’ll save every one of us. Kendal, aaah. He’s a miracle!”
I have faith in your storytelling and drawing (and colouring ability) Red! You can pull it off (but it may take some careful planning).
i love how we can see the shielded archive. red keeps knocking it out of the park with this Zuurith Arc backdrops
I wonder what’s on Tynan’s mind.
Tynan hates people who are all talk yet has the only spoken line in this whole page. How ironic.
Oh hey, it’s Vienne! Nice to see her helping the people evacuate; Shrike better treat her to a great breakfast after all this is over … and when the cafes in Zuurith are open again. Also, is that Trusk in the top right corner of the second panel? Carrying someone to safety? … Could that someone be Shrike?
Thank you Red for adding all these background character elements, really does emphasise the human side to this catastrophe. The pensioner being supported by Vienne, the ferin girl being helped up by the man in the third panel, all great stuff.
What’s the matter Tynan? Suspecting Kendal of stalling for time? Not satisfied at his performance? Suspecting that blue glow is Vash helping Kendal? Missing any in-fight banter? (If it’s the last one you have only yourself to blame, what with your repeated complaining about gods being all talk.)
@Evil Tree well the dude in the top right does look a lot like Trusk, but why would shrike need carrying? Did she get injured off screen? Is that someone else?
Speaking of Trusk, what does he actually do for a living? Does the Arena give past inmates pensions or something? I have many questions
The townsfolk flee before the storm,
That darkens the sky with fear,
As bold-hearted Kendall faces Tynan,
Barely blocking a slash to the ear
RIP Red having to draw crowd scenes… Also I just noticed one of the jail guards helping an old lady. Cute detail
Oooo, Tynan’s having a bit more trouble than he thought!
OMG THE ALT TEXT MADE ME AUGH OUT LOUD
I hope that Arena keeper gets what’s coming to him.
Why isn’t my comment showing up?
It’s a lot of work what you’ve set out for yourself, but I think the pay-off is worth it. Been following for about a year now, love what you’re doing.
Tynan’s sword jumping from his left hand to his right from one panel to another. Tsk tsk 😛
I do like his expression though. Seems rather surprised our dear Himbo Kendal isn’t just falling over dead.
WOAH they’re fighting in a giant tornado?! That’s SO cool! Too bad that everyone is too busy running for their lives to properly appreciate it.
@Kapuchu: He’s dual wielding, so both hands have a sword.
My gods the vISUals! Also, why does Kendal look like he only just now discovered he was holding a sword?
This is going to be cheap, but I can probably make a FUTURIVIA out of this. Ah well, let’s do it anyway:
What is Tynan thinking about?
A: “Hm, this guy’s lasting longer than I thought.”?
B: “Hm, maybe Vash is in this guy after all.”
C: “Hm, the spectacle’s dying down. I should do something about it.”?
D: “Hm, did I leave the stove on when I left the ocean?”?
Red, I swear, if you make another character have thoughts to speculate about and do nothing with them, I’m gonna be PISSED (jk, you’re doing awesome with everything here.
@Rororoyourboat: Surprisingly, it still works either way.
@veggiesnake: Oh, very cool. Thanks :-)!
@CapitainCutlet: Exactly what I was thinking.
@fraymotif: That guard’s actually Captain Vienne, who appeared in earlier chapters. Cool that she makes an appearance now.
Not even a scratch! Looks like Kendal will last even longer than Tynan had hoped.
So it looks like Tynan is upping the destruction by starting structure fires, too. He can raze a city in three different ways, between water, wind, and fire.
I wonder what kind of ferin that lady in panel three is? Between the black-tipped nose, long ears, and short, fluffy tail, I’m guessing rabbit.
oh dear. I don’t think that hm is a good hm.
@Humanoid Clay A seems like the most likely to me. Maybe B.
TL;DR: maybe you bit off a bit more than you can chew… Or throw lightning at, as it were.
@Red:
The alt text today KILLED me! You could have totally split that into two pages’ jokes but I love that you kept both. <3 You're doing a great job with the art, its always so beautiful- and by this point I've started going back to see how you do the lightning shots bc I need good references 😀
Humanoid Clay: i think C
in completely unrelated randomness, yesterday in my baking and desserts class my groupmates were idiots and melted the bottom off a pan. thankfully we’re switching up groups next week.
alt text: not having much luck swordfighting the sword guy who named himself after a sword? shocking! (get it?)
To TheUnknownGame:
Deer, maybe? Tail doesn’t look quite right, but it could be a combination of the angle and said tail being fluffed out in panic.
The Registrar:
Wow, has it really been that long?
Humanoid Clay:
I’m thinking a little bit of A, little bit of C. Tynan’s expression prettymuch screams “okay, bored now.”
Jook t Spook:
Poor guy’s probably starting to reach his limits, even if his high healing rate is still keeping him physically intact (look at the accumulated scorch marks on his shirt–he’s definitely been struck several times, and even for him a lightning bolt is no joke). It could also be he’s in some sort of half-trance or something–though that probably is putting a drain on his energy reserves, too. I don’t thing that eye-glow is as strong as it was the last time we saw him…
To Spicy 555:
There’s a sometimes a bit of a time delay, and sometimes comments randomly disappear for a while on a new page. It’s normal, and they’ll show up again eventually.
To alolanvulpix:
Okay, how? How do you screw up that badly, especially in class? I mean, I get that it’s possible, a relative of mine once left a wooden cutting board on a recently-used stove burner and ended up scorching it (in their defense they hadn’t known the burner was still hot enough to do so), but there’s a huge difference between a wooden cutting board and what I assume is a glass or metal pan.
To Spidey 555:
Also, my apologies, autocorrect got to your name when I replied and I missed it.
Skye: we were making rice pudding with a double boiler(a double boiler has two pots stacked on each other, food in the top and water in the bottom) to avoid burning the rice pudding, and they didn’t put the water in the bottom pot, so instead of heating the water to cook the rice pudding, the burner was was just heating the bottom of the pot. so as a end result the pot got melted, the stovetop got wrecked, and the pudding didn’t cook.
To alolanvulpix:
…Eesh. Assuming that your class had previously been taught how to use one and there were instructions kept somewhere for reference just in case, then I’ve got to agree, your groupmates are idiots. Hopefully you didn’t get penalized by association, since it sounds like you were busy at the time with a task that wasn’t keeping an eye on the pot.
(Though surely there was someone who was supposed to be doing that? I know cooking classes that require group-work can be hectic (though admittedly Home Ec for me was way back in middle school), but not leaving an operating stove completely unattended is common sense. And something like rice pudding would, I assume, take near-constant monitoring to make sure it turned out.)
I think that ‘hmm’ is either a ‘hmm, still got some vash in him’ or a ‘hmm, archive’s doing its thing’
Because he definitely seemed to be paying attention to something else, not the fight.
So maybe it was about Caliban and Tahraim, or Zuurith reforming, or the aforementioned archive shield thing.
It would be weird if he had any specific interest in the archive, but it would tie him nicely to the whole VD wants to destroy the world thing going on.
@alolanvulpix
wow. That’s… impressive.
How do you forget to put water into the bottom of a double boiler. That’s literally the whole reason for a double boiler.
I’m glad it’s spring break, but I missed Monday’s page entirely because of that. Which is sad, because Monday’s page was pretty good.
I love the alt text today. Just amazing.
@alolanvulpix when i was a young child in the scouts, i entered this camp cooking competition with a few friends. i fried bacon, they boiled pasta. but they didn’t put any water in, just the pasta itself, and they tunred the heat up.
i was quite afraid of confrontation, so after about 5 tense minutes of glancing over at them, i inncoently suggested: “aren’t you supposed to put water in?” and they were like: “oh, yeah! that’s what we’re missing!”
no pans were harmed, and the food was still relatively edible, but i’ve never seen blackened pasta before or since
Tynan: “You can parry a sword quite well! But let’s see you parry a lightning bolt!”
Kendal: parries a lightning bolt
Tynan: “…”
Kendal: “Sorry, was I not meant to take that literally?”
@alolanvulpix, damn thats rough hope you get better group guys next time
@alolanvulpix It’s totally related, Humanoid Clay mentioned stoves AND potentially burning things.
@alolanvulpix And the rice pudding you ended up making was really good.
god this is so cool
Oh My Cat I -love- the alt-text!! …but it makes me worry even more for Kendal, now. Tynan looks like his mood is darkening: from being snarky/superior to getting frustrated & pissed off.
Zuurith better get his act together – and fast – or Kendal is going to be a greasy black smear on the ground!
To those confused, I’m pretty sure Tynan is realising that magic floof is gonna freeze his water
Skye: technically, none of us got penalized(because the teacher is nice), but none of blame was on me. i was washing dishes . . . . . which was one of them’s job, they were a sorta sucky group. the stove was ‘attended’ in the sense that both of them were at it stirring, but neither me or the teacher thought to check if they had actually put water in the bottom part of the double boiler.
SarrissaTeiflingDruid: i have no clue how they forgot, our last lab used a double boiler too so for the last 2 weeks the teacher has been telling and reminding us how to use a double boiler. though, speaking of the last lab, we had to make whipped cream as a topping, and the recipe was 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream and 2 tbsp sugar. the groupmate who was at school that day ignored the recipe and put in 1/3 cup sugar.
veggiesnake: are you sure the pasta was still edible? in my expirence with food, the only thing that is still edible after being burned black is marshmellows.
DeRokerij: i should, today the teacher asked us to write down who we wanted to be in a group with and i wrote down ‘anyone but my current group’. there’s no guarantee that my new group will be better, but none of the other groups had their pans melting, so i’m optimistic.
The Aceassin: you say that, but it was basically rice in sweetened milk, and i’m a little surprised that you didn’t get food poisoning or anything because there was somewhat raw egg in it. also as far as making it mostly what i did was cook the rice the day prior.
At some point, here, Tynan’s gonna remember he isn’t the god of the abstract concept of war. He’s the god of a storm, and he’ll start using that.
@Glorious Gumboot that… would make sense, yes.
Those plant mages are really giving me demeter cabin vibes anyone else getting that?
I’m just glad Kendal seems to be holding his own. This fear mongering warm front doesn’t deserve the satisfaction of taking him out.
@Glorious Gumboot
That would make a lot of sense, yes.
The thing is, though, there’s so much stuff going on here that we couldn’t possibly tell what it is with any accuracy.
What with a giant tree made of pure life magic that he can probably see, Tahraim and Caliban opposing him, Zuurith reforming, Dainix on his way in (I think), the archive shield, and Erin trying to take away his control of the rain, plus Kendal actually holding his own against him… there’s a lot going on here that could cause someone to go ‘hmmm’.
@alolanvulpix
Honestly, I’m kind of in disbelief. Like, I don’t cook, but I can follow instructions pretty well. It doesn’t seem that hard, but I don’t know anymore.
@DeRokerij
Honestly, except for Meg, Demeter cabin *never* did anything this destructive. They are similar, I think, but Alinua uses it very differently, and of course, they don’t heal much.
Tynan really looking at Kendal as if: “Where is your terror? i specifically requested it.”
“fear mongering warm front”
Nice one, @Dandelion. I’ve got to
stealremember that.Whoa. I didn’t expect Kendal to not only be still standing, but virtually untouched in his battle with Tynan.
Yo! Tynan! Kendal took more damage from Dainix. Does that worry you?
He wanted to beat Kendal with swordsmanship, but it’s not going to happen.
If he goes full power and uses lightning bolts on the other hand.. that’s a different matter. But I suspect he’s about to be distracted on multiple fronts.
Not sure how many will recognize the Babylon 5 reference, but Tynan is reminding me of Emperor Cartagia complaining that G’Kar will not scream even when worked on by the finest torturers (excuse me, pain technicians).
And here I thought Kendal was getting his ass beat. Kick him in the nuts little godling!
I mean, Red, if it’s any comfort to you, this is absolutely beautiful
