So like are these messenger birds programmed to always hit people on the back of their head?
It turns out that removing the part of the spell that makes it hit you in the back of the head causes the whole thing to become unstable, and since no-one can work out why, they have to leave that code in.
Nah, it’s just funnier that way. Borbs be like “Think fast, chucklenuts!”
It’s just what those people get, if they’re not gonna pay attention. Watchin’ out for some dragon instead of text messages… Tsk, Kendal, where are your priorities?
Since they track the target’s exhalations (which is brilliant, by the way), they probably determine their distance from the target based on how much their breath has diffused. A target with its back turned is breathing in the wrong direction and so would detect as farther away than one that is facing the “bird,” so it makes sense, with it being programmed to deliver the message right in front of the target, for it to misjudge the distance and bonk them right on the back of the head.
It’s now my headcanon that the person who initially designed the spell, upon discovering this problem, decided it was too funny to fix and so left it in play.

Vros: Come now, I’ve waited long enough! I know it’s something new to you, godling, but it’s called a bath.
We’ve seen Kendal struggle against foes before, but never so casually and playfully; even Tynan at his most theatrical was still riled up and hurt at times. I was worried the spellbird could distract Kendal, but since Vros is insistent on play-fighting and pulling their punches, it shouldn’t be too big of a deal.
At least this is proof that Kendal can fight in water, and swim for that matter, that’s good to know. But Vros is both adapted to being underwater AND not taking things seriously; with an opponent like that it’s hard to tell from this fight how good or poor his skill level is.
Panel one and two: “You’re taking a very long time to drown, you know. It’s a bit inconsiderate.”
I think this is this dragon’s normal way of fighting a non-aquatic enemy. Evade and outlast the enemy and let the underwater battlefield do the work. Or, if they are under orders to bring an enemy back while still alive, almost drown them and grab them when they are too tired to fight back.

i’m a BIG fan of how disheveled Kendal is looking in the last few panels. his hair especially. it’s usually so magnificent and now it’s all flat and scrungly. he is in So Much Distress Right Now. <3

For a guy with metal in his bones, Kendal is extremely good at treading water. Both shoulders above water! Damn
He’d still have some buoyancy, from whatever fats Vash used in making him, he’s unlikely to have ZERO fat and still look so human, so while his buoyancy isn’t positive, it’s not quite as negative as pure starmetal.
Probably doesn’t make all that much difference, though
Ah. I stayed up until nearly five clicking the thing, and yet this page didn’t appear. I guess I just sacrificed my sleep schedule for nothing. Also yay! Tess and Falst are here! Though I’m worried about kendal, as he needs to breath to fight. Hope he didn’t get any water in his lungs. And once this dragon is defeated,I’m expecting Falst to kind of freak out when kendal has no news about Dainix(Or Erin), and Kendal to give relationship advice /and or therapy(but then again I thought that was what Rakhan was going to do).

Pretty sure the only way you’re using a sword underwater is by stabbing. Even with super strength you’d mostly just spin yourself in place rather that the sword. 😉
Point taken, but I’m telling myself that if Kendal can tread water THAT well, he might be able to use swimming to counteract the reaction principle and still get a swing off.
Still, you may have noticed the first evidence that Kendal isn’t intuitively able to fight well underwater.
Yes, his swordplay certainly doesnt seem to be up to his usual bar in the blitzball arena. On the plus side if his sparring partner is waiting for him to asphyxiate, it seems that they are likely to be disappointed. I dont get the impression that Kendal has to breathe very often. Or maybe at all. 🙂
