Dainix and Falst right in front of him, one of Falst’s arms slung over Dainix’s shoulder, the Ferin limping along as fast as he can with one arm pressed across his stomach.
. “If you need me to carry you–” Dainix starts worriedly.
. “Shut up and let me watch your blind side,” Falst rasps.
. Erin runs a few yards in front of them, Tess just behind him.
. “Thank goodness you got back so fast. I don’t know how long I could keep stalling,” he says, eyes reflecting blue with the Water magic he’s still channeling.
. “I didn’t make it to the peak. Kendal met me halfway,” Tess says. “How are we getting off the island?”
. “OFF the island? I haven’t thought that far ahead yet–! But I–” Erin freezes, looking down at something as surprise and horror flash across his face.

Spellbirbs track people by their exhalation, so the solution is to mermaidify everyone and escape underwater! Mermaid Tess, Mermaid Erin, Mermaid Falst, Mermaid Dainix… Kendal will just walk along the bottom, he doesn’t need to breathe and he can’t swim even if mermaidified.
I doubt Alinua will risk flesh-shaping anyone else (it probably wouldn’t even work on Falst). More likely that Erin or Alinua’s Mer-mage friends will bubble them for travel to Helm.
I bet the reason Erin cut off is that Alinua is on a beach in a boat made out of seaweed or something like that and that’s how they’re gonna escape the island
Let’s hope the next chapter they can rest under the sea for a few weeks while alinua heals them and the get a break from everything because they are all sooooo injured (except tess)

Ahh, channeling the Storm god Vs. Dragon fight trope to scare away the Paladins. I see what you did there Tess.
“M-my fault”. Falst, if you’re talking about getting injured, you had to act. If you’re talking about falling for Caliban’s trickery, don’t sweat it; Kendal may have even had his suspicions from the get go. … Y’know, whatever you’re referring too, it’s unwarranted.
Nice to see the Ruunaser siblings back in action together again like in Zuurith, even if it is just a scare tactic and some concealing mist. But they had an endgame plan for Tynan, and only a distraction plan for this; I’m sure Alinua will come in clutch to get them off the island, but I have no idea how we’ll get to that point.
Erin seeing/sensing something in the final panel? Something that cut him off? Chapter ending on Friday?! Oh boy, what will be the cliffhanger? More Paladins, maybe Tam himself covered in bandages? A plant-based message from Alinua? Maybe something earth shattering, or maybe they’ve simply reached the singing cave entrance sooner than Erin expected.
If I had to make a wild, dramatic guess what stopped Erin, how about this:
He sensed the caves opening. That makes no sense, he hasn’t reached them yet, and the Paladins would have no reason to open it themselves. Then, it cuts to the cave entrance, opening almost organically, and out steps a woman with long black hair and her chimeras.
Oh fuck, if the Collector turned up NOW, I don’t know what I’d do.
I do think Erin’s noticing something though, whether it’s the caves opening or maybe some kind of message from Alinua. Perhaps Alinua will even beat him to the punch and open the caves before they reunite? But The Collector… that WOULD be crazy.
Man, if Red really gives us the collector NOW it’ll be amazing (for us not the characters). She’s getting the build up for a long while now. But I do think it’s probably “oh shit more paladins” especially with that display of tess, though very impressive was also VERY loud. I have no idea what’s gonna happen and I am SOO excited, I hope the chapter break isn’t very long.
That third panel is amazing! Tess pinning a dragon to the ground with her lightning, Kendal supporting Falst while holding out his sword, it’s all perfectly framed.
It’s clever that Falst says he’ll look out for Dainix’s blind side, him having only one eye he wouldn’t be able to see to his right easily so it’s thoughtful for Falst to do that.
……I just had the realization that Dainix probably didn’t have the time to re-learn how to fight, to adjust to being half-blind, before getting flung into arena combat by Zuurith
I just love all the detail in the “CRACK” sound effect, give our imaginations an idea what it looked like without Red having to actually illustrate it 🙂

WOW.The second to last panel is my favorite because of many little things, like the way Erin’s face and hair looks, the bushes and trees, the spellcasting, and the way Kendal looks back!

I think he could be sensing the Wyrm of the northern Waters’ water magic moving towards the shore, possibly bringing both Alinua and a way off the Island. Just to guess, I say he’s going to have a mirror panel to when Alinua saw the chimeric Wyrm about to eat them from below, but it’s the healed Wyrm with Alinua coming to save them.
Y’know, this really helped me to realize Tess’s pure AURA. When she’s not holding back or fighting gods (Tam counts as a god in my mind. kinda. he is this light dragon’s avatar after all), she’s pretty damn threatening!

2. Alinua, having speed-swam to the island after learning that the group was in danger and ready to help everyone get into the water to hide for a few weeks?
3. The Collector, either confronting Alinua or stepping out from the caves they were making a break for as a last resort?
4. None of the above, something else?
Paladins are old, and no way Theia caught up. Also, narratively, it doesn’t feel like the right time for her. Placing my bets on Alinua. But like. Mer-Alinua. So everyone has time to properly go WTF? before she changes back.
I think more Paladins, just because that looked like a LOT of dragons bearing down on the island earlier, so doubtless there are much more of them than the point squad the gang just encountered.
Now that I’m thinking about it, how is Tess not outright killing the dragon with that much lightning magic? Actually, how did Erin not kill himself when he channeled enough lightning to lock his muscles up for at least half a minute way back in the Caves?
As for how Tess didn’t kill Aryss, perhaps because she didn’t intend to? Maybe she can shape the lightning so it only paralyzes the legs and doesn’t affect the mind?
As for Erin overchanneling lightning during his field trip in 1.7.25, I feel like overchanneling is different to being hit by lightning. Maybe his soul barrier protected him?
Apparently, paralysing Ligtning does not work in the same way as in our world. In the caves, Erin could still speak, and VD was afraid of the cave cralwers eating Erin, not the paralysing by itself. Maybe the soul barrier keeps the body’s own Ligtning safe from outside infuence to some extent?
So I guess that means Ligtning in Aurora doesn’t mess with respiration and heart-function.
Also, Ligtning would be insanely overpowred/broken if any old ligtning mage could kill powerful monsters (e.g. a huge Fire dragon) by simply stopping its heart.
Yeah Red talks about this in her Elemental Magic Trope talk (link at my username). “I did not want every wizard battle to be a competition of who could switch off the other guy’s brain faster. So… anything that has a soul… has a strong resistance to any kind of magic, because it prevents the intrusion of elemental energy required to make that magic happen. Soul energy is mysterious, uncontrollable, permeates everything and forms magic-resistant lattices…”
I love how this page moves through the group, with the focus on Falst as the Paladin gets whacked offscreen, then Falst and Kendal’s quiet moment getting interrupted by Tess, then a quick handoff to Erin and then a getaway!
(Also I lovelovelove that Kendal gets Falst up then immediately hands him off to Dainix like “here’s your dude”)
So Alinua getting them into the water is a good idea, but we have to remember that flesh shaping the gang into mermaids won’t work in the long run, since it will make them very sick, as highlighted with Falst way back during his debut. Also, Alinua staying as a mermaid will make her fall sick even sooner than the others, which would be bad since she would be the one turning the others into mermaids, which could negatively effect them as well if her life magic runs rampant.
So here’s hoping that they DON’T stay in the water for longer than a day or so if that is how they’re going to escape the island

(My guess for leaving the island is that it involves vine balls like Alinua made for the boys, seen on 2.4.2. At first I thought Vine Boat, but since the message birds track exhalations, we need to keep the party 🎶Under De Sea🎵)
I finally rejoin the fandom and red takes a break. Again. Istg last time I did this it was the dreaded October gap (that being said I know how important rest is and hope red can enjoy her time off but im scarred)
Oh no. Um. Guys? Remember when Falst made that huge Light Claw spell thing when he and Dainix were escaping the Glort? Remember the words that were going through his mind? Something like “There’s still breath in your body! Just MOVE!” I think those words came from a voice from Falst’s past. I think that voice was an abuser. In fact, I think the abuser was his father. And I think Falst’s abusive father is to blame for a lot of Falst’s mental health issues, as seen in “M-my fault…” in this page. I think he thinks that it’s his fault that he didn’t just get up. Falst’s abusive, probably Paladin father instilled in him all Falst’s worst beliefs and behaviors. I think. Oh gods.
Oh I really hope not. I took it as the kind of abusive self-talk he used to survive alone, especially starving and/or after dealing with angry townspeople/mages, along the lines of ‘Nobody is coming to save you, so you have to get up and do it yourself. If you don’t find food you’ll die. MOVE.’ that got more self-loathing as the years went on. But the “if you are truly my son” (on 1.15.1) lends weight to your theory. 🥺

Oh no. Um. Guys? Remember when Falst made that huge Light Claw spell thing when he and Dainix were escaping the Glort? Remember the words that were going through his mind? Something like “There’s still breath in your body! Just MOVE!” I think those words came from a voice from Falst’s past. I think that voice was an abuser. In fact, I think the abuser was his father. And I think Falst’s abusive father is to blame for a lot of Falst’s mental health issues, as seen in “M-my fault…” in this page. I think he thinks that it’s his fault that he didn’t just get up. Falst’s abusive, probably Paladin father instilled in him all Falst’s worst beliefs and behaviors. I think. Oh gods.
Oh I really hope not. I took it as the kind of abusive self-talk he used to survive alone, especially starving and/or after dealing with angry townspeople/mages, along the lines of ‘Nobody is coming to save you, so you have to get up and do it yourself. If you don’t find food you’ll die. MOVE.’ that got more self-loathing as the years went on. But the “if you are truly my son” (on 1.15.1) lends weight to your theory. 🥺
