When you’re putting all your strength into stabbing downward and your spear just… doesn’t budge, it leaves an impression. What would be really funny would be if the guy accidentally lifted himself up trying to pull the spear down (I’m pretty certain Kendall could handle his body weight plus armor with one hand, plus he’s probably heavy enough that wouldn’t change his center of gravity too much), but that would probably take away a certain sense of gravitas in the scene (and also probably be difficult to convey in a single frame).
I like to think that the reason Paul is only a foot shorter than Kendal is because Kendal actually has picked up the spear, and a wide shot would just show the Paladin’s feet dangling 6 inches off the ground.

By my count she is 4/6 for dragons getting punched:
Already punched: Desert dragon that was possessed, Rock dragon that attacked Falst, Tynan, Aryss.
Yet to be punched: Void Dragon, Light Dragon. (But since they are technically the same cosmic being this is understandable).
I like the implication that Tess was able to hear the entire exchange between Aryss and Erin while approaching the dragon at Mach 5 like some sort of intercontinental missile. Or she just knows how Erin usually stalls for time.
Also my God does Kendal look absolutely done with this
Kendal ‘No one dies for me, not ever’ enters the scene, eyes glowing and with some firm words for the nameless warrior mook. And Tess Dragon Puncher enters the scene, reminding us why the Floof Squad are a force to be reckoned with.
No matter how screwed you feel right now Mr/Mrs faceless-mook, you must remain thankful that Alinua is still in the ocean.
I get the distinct impression that Tess is NOT pulling her punches, and Aryss may be down for a while; as seen with the burrower wyrm, if Tess is protecting others, she can, and will, one-punch a misbehaving dragon. Tess’s performance might mean Paladins will field the stormdrake sooner rather than later; their element will resist Tess’s lighting, and there’s a good chance they have a grudge against her.
As lovely as that KRACKOOM is, subtle it was not; Paladin reinforcements will flood here without having to be called. Erin’s cave distraction plan is still viable but they need to move fast, and figure out how to bust it open lacking Stone and Life magic.
More of Tess’s lighting amplified punches? Kendal with starfire? Mixing of Water and Fire for a pressurised steam explosion?

I’m assuming, since Tess left to find Kendal, that she carried him over and he just jumped during the big lightening hit when everyone was focused on the dragon getting wrecked. It also makes sense that he’d go for the party member in the most danger. Tess has Erin covered, Dainix was down, but Falst is down, maybe not even conscious AND surrounded by armed hostiles, so it would make sense that Kendal would jump away from Tess and go straight for Falst, which would’ve made him hard to notice with all the lightening in the air and, again, big dragon.

Omg this is exciting. 1. When I realized tess was going to come in the first panel, I started cheering and pumping my arms and both my jaws popped. 2. Kendall has glow eyes like he did when he was Vash (a god) Not as glory as gods, but close. I blame the volcano, because I suspect the gods’ eyes glow because of ambient soul energy that cant be contained by their bodies, and if the volcano gave Dainix power, it also might have refueled Kendal a little when he was sitting in the crater and talking to Rakhn. Alternatively hes taking energy from the staff (Kendal is immune to paladin light damage the same way Falst is, so maybe he can feed off it) or just its glowing and reflecting off his eyes(lame). 3. Someone above mentioned that it’s panel 2.6.26 in 26 so overall im just having a very autistic morning
And I got lost down that rabbit hole for a bit, read through the caves section till we first meet our paladin friend. Speaking of: it is clear that these paladins have a lot to learn still from the Light Dragon’s champion; only one of them was calm and brave (and he’s been downed, so isn’t able to keep the rest in line).
I have never been so relieved in my life to see Kendal. I’m happy to see Tess too! She rocks, she’s saving their asses! But oh my god the last line of panels. Falst limp on the ground, Erin’s and Dainix’s horrified expressions and Dainix’s heartwrenching cry. Then Kendal, with starfire blue glowing in his eyes, saying a different kind of no that’s all firmness and steel. Like, no. Denied. You will stop, now. You will not hurt my friends. Agggh I love him so much.
Also, yes, Erin’s line was 100% a setup for Tess, very good.
It really speaks to Red’s storytelling that the audience can read Dainix’s line, and immediately KNOW exactly how distraught he is, and have their hearts hurt about it.

If Aurora was animated, how do you think the characters would sound?
Kendal and Vash would have the same voice actor (obv) but Vash would have God Echo and they are doing very different voices, Vash having big action-hero energy and Kendal having like an extremely even, calming, almost unexpressive voice especially when fighting
Alinua has a very expressive voice and also it would be interesting if she shares a voice actor with Life, but distorted enough that it’s hard to tell
Erin has classic anime-smug-rival voice, but incredibly british (i’ve heard people hc that Aesrans have british accents and thats fun).
Falst has a kinda rough sounding voice, but it would be interesting if it’s one of the deeper voices in the cast (because everyone forgets he’s probably one of the older main characters)
Tess I just imagine sounding like Red. Maybe the voice she does for Kyana on RWD, but also maybe it would be fun if on some words she’s also kind of british
A detail about Dainix that hasn’t been mentioned in-story yet is that Ignans have their own language or at least a pretty intense dialect, so maybe he should have some kind of accent to show that whatever language the main cast is speaking isn’t his first
An idea I have for VD and LD is that there are two voice actors, a feminine one and a masculine one, but both of them voice either character. It’s just balanced so one is louder depending on who’s actually the one talking. Possesed!Erin doesn’t have Erin’s voice at all, even in the background.
Tam sounds normal but on some words LD’s voice is under-layed (is that a word?) a little bit
Finally, the Collector I have a very specific voice in mind for her and that is The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives In Your Home from night vale, in that she has a normal voice but something about it is deeply wrong anyway (might be how it’s EQd? or maybe that voice actress is just built different who knows)
There are two videos on youtube about this subject exactly! Personally though, I don’t tend to assign voices to characters I’m reading about, but i can tell you that the voice actors of Kendal/Vash and Erin/Voidy would have their work cut out for them trying to heavily show “this is their normal voice” versus “this is their possessed voice”

I often observe the comments but never interact with them, I feel that this fandom needs to be bigger though! It’s so great! I love being able to read new pages every week.
i ADORE how this team has been built so really any one of them showing up when the rest are in a bind can be a “thank god the calvary is here” kind of moment, but it’s especially fun here with tess and kendal! fuck em up guys!! also please lets get everyone out of here as fast as possible!!! kendals expression in the last panel is pretty chilling, and highlights a very consistent piece of characterization for him that i love, which is that he never seems to be enjoying the fights he gets into (in a clearly deliberate and very stark contrast to vash). he’s always incredibly intense and deadly serious, even in fights like the one with rakhan where it ends with no hurt feelings on either side. even though so many people (himself included most of the time) think of him as an extension of vashs sword and as some kind of weapon he has never been a violent person, and it really does make me (as a reader) hope for a future for him where he doesn’t have to throw himself into battles anymore! this comment def got away from me but it’s hard not to let it when aurora is such a well crafted story and kendal especially is such a well crafted protagonist (one of many! in the same story! it’s really amazing!)
Well, I didn’t expect Kendal and Tess to interrupt by completely DOMINATING the situation… I guess this was the Secret Third Option I was hoping Red to come up with, at least sort of. Because it means communication can continue, instead of devolving back into combat.

Seeing as how Tess’s skin is basically metal, something tells me if they tried to shoot at her normally it would just ricochet off.
Light magic seems to work on her (at least the crown thing did), so that whip they used on Dainix should theoretically work on Tess.

There are two videos on youtube about this subject exactly! Personally though, I don’t tend to assign voices to characters I’m reading about, but i can tell you that the voice actors of Kendal/Vash and Erin/Voidy would have their work cut out for them trying to heavily show “this is their normal voice” versus “this is their possessed voice”
I read Void’s voice as Mark Hamill. He’s just to good at bad guy voices.

i ADORE how this team has been built so really any one of them showing up when the rest are in a bind can be a “thank god the calvary is here” kind of moment, but it’s especially fun here with tess and kendal! fuck em up guys!! also please lets get everyone out of here as fast as possible!!! kendals expression in the last panel is pretty chilling, and highlights a very consistent piece of characterization for him that i love, which is that he never seems to be enjoying the fights he gets into (in a clearly deliberate and very stark contrast to vash). he’s always incredibly intense and deadly serious, even in fights like the one with rakhan where it ends with no hurt feelings on either side. even though so many people (himself included most of the time) think of him as an extension of vashs sword and as some kind of weapon he has never been a violent person, and it really does make me (as a reader) hope for a future for him where he doesn’t have to throw himself into battles anymore! this comment def got away from me but it’s hard not to let it when aurora is such a well crafted story and kendal especially is such a well crafted protagonist (one of many! in the same story! it’s really amazing!)
