(Also if this manual sixth-level comment never renders at all I’m going to be so mad. If the system insists on bumping it back up to fifth level I’ll be disappointed but at least it will still exist.)
I wonder rather who sent it. We do know (from asks) that there are mages in the Paladin ranks. How likely is it that one of the Septrenn (if one or more of them are indeed leading this contingent) is also a mage? I wanna say it’s unlikely, but who knows.
On a side note, do I read a sporkles tease there from Dainix? Sounds like it.
I really wanna see the group go to Asera so that we meet Erin and Tess’s family, then Kendal starts meeting with the god Asera. I just want to see the runaser’s family reaction to that happening
They don’t need a mage to do this, just a Wind lacrima with the right inscriptions for the spell. Even accounting for Paladin telepathy powers, it makes sense to have them around for communication and tracking.
Look closely. It’s not shaped like a bird.
(I hope an actual person sees this. I have realized my messages don’t go through, probably because I refuse to use a real email, but I hope some mod still sees this. Maybe even pass the idea along.)
Ooh, my question from last page was answered! Thanks Falst, I can always rely on you to ask the important questions!
On another note, seems Erin is far from the only one to think to use messenger spells to find people. And he helpfully performed the Odysseus with Tam and L.D. present…
Oops, used a user name that wasn’t approved yet. I’ll repeat myself slightly:
It seems Erin is far from the only one to think to use messenger spells to find people. And he helpfully performed the Odysseus with Tam and L.D. present…
Tam is the paladin that attacked them on the boat, whose name we only learned more recently after he was being ferried back to safety bslung beneath a dragon.
Judging by the Chapter Art, a Paladin-Allied Wind Mage or a Paladin with a Wind Lacrima. There are others it could be, like Shrike or Asera or any number of new forces, but now seems like a strange time to bring them into the story. The Chapter Art suggests the Light of the Paladins; Rakhn pointed out an approaching fleet of dragons or birds; and since Erin kindly introduced himself to Tam, the Lady’s Champion, she now knows his face and name. She can tell as many of her followers as she chooses, whenever she likes.
That line, “The fight will always be waiting.” makes more sense now.
The comic is getting pretty close to 1000 pages. By my count , this is either page 980 or 990!
The ten extra pages are two-page uploads way back in arc 1 chapters 6, 7, and 8. I’m not sure those as 1 (=980) or 2 pages (=990)
So what do you guys think: 980 or 990?
*snorts* Erin’s expression in the first panel is gold. As far as I know, he *has* been successful about selectively blocking things from VD…but anytime he becomes sure of something like that, I get nervous. Still, he can’t exactly *not think*, and he’s right about one thing: if he’d worked it out, consciously or subconsciously while Walter was in the driver’s seat, that may have been worse. And I’m curious about his phrasing…’structure my memories’…?
Love that perspective in the last panel. Wind messages are really a double-edged sword, huh?
Re: Erin structuring his memories, for some reason I’m thinking he has a “memory palace” and correlates information to places, that VD has no patience to figure out or even investigate.
I initially misinterpreted the purple magic as being Asera themself manifesting to chastize their elemental magus after news finally reached them about the elemental storm being gone. Message bird is scarier, though.
Dainix confirms that what he made in the ship was neither void nor light! Tahraim describes this substance as “the essence of hunger, stripped of pretense and pride”. I think that means that, while void and light are two sides of the same coin, you can still melt this coin to get a third thing. This also implies that light is not any more the “true” form of their element than void is, likely being similarly shaped by what the Light Dragon thinks it is. However, I think it is probably still void’s natural opposite because of how Dainix’s instincts transmuted one into the other, rather than into this third thing. The third thing had to be sought out and interpreted in order to be made.
It is not a stable material, vanishing shortly after Dainix created it. I also find it really interesting how it took a dragon shape before dissapearing. It seems likely that being a dragon is intrinsic to all versions of this element. Maybe by looking at the shared traits between both VD and LD it could be possible to find out what parts are fundamental to the 7th element and what parts are just the way each dragon looks at it. What even is it’s higher property? How would it affect Dainix if he’d absorved Light instead? Is that even possible, or can only void interact with him that way? I love this fictional element and the bajillion questions it poses
My headcanon has been that the light dragon is the element of love or something, and the intersection between hunger and love is desire, if that makes sense
…Hmm…what if…Caliban and Tahraim’s plan (or ulterior, similar plans that both require their cooperation) involves Dainix melting Void and/or Light into Secret Third Thing…AT SCALE!?!? For…REASONS!?!?!?!?
. “Good thing you cracked this wide open and told us all about it,” Falst says dryly.
. “What was I supposed to do? NOT solve the problem?!” Erin protests. “Now we at least know that the Paladins categorically cannot be trusted — and that Dainix can alter and potentially neutralize all of their attacks!”
. “Right now it just sounds like I can make them differently dangerous,” Dainix says, thinking. “But you’re right, it’s not nothing. And what I transmuted on the ship… I’m not sure it was Void OR Light at the end.”
. “What are you gonna do the next time the Void Dragon takes you out for a spin?” Falst asks. “Think really hard about a song?”
. “The Void Dragon doesn’t know the first thing about how I structure my memories,” Erin says with a smile, “and he’s too arrogant to care to learn. If anything, we’d be in more danger if I’d ignored this problem until he took control of me again. If I had worked it out while he were listening, we’d be in real–”
. Erin cuts off, jerking back in surprise as a small cloud of glowing Wind magic sweeps into the cave. Falst bares his teeth, tensing, and the three of them stare as the magic coalesces into the form of a dragon-like bird, hovering above their heads.
. “Erin” It says slowly, “Ruunaser.”
“What was I supposed to do? NOT solve the problem?!” That’s it. That’s peak Erin right there.
I’ve just had a thought/theory about what that final Light Dainix made could be. It had many prismatic colours that I assumed were on the outside of the white. But what if that Light was ALL many colours and they overlapped together in the middle to make white, like the spectrum of a star. If V.D. could be considered a black hole analogue, might Light be that of a sun? Could the fact the Paladin’s draw their power from the dragon be the reason why their Light is more sterile than “true” Light? Might Yanna, the hypothetical god of Aurora’s sun, play a role?
Erin has rigidly structured memories? Interesting. The soulshaper monks are about using a disciplined mind to manipulate the soul; maybe getting Erin to properly order his memories was part of the training he underwent. But Erin can’t get careless; if the Glort was able to break through into his memories, V.D. might find a way too.
… Ah … I had not considered that specific ramification from Erin telling Tam his name, and without Erin’s Wind magic, I’m don’t think there’s an easy way to stop this. A Wind lacrima powered disruption spell might be possible, but only in short range; they’ll still be able to get a gist of their position, and with enough Paladins searching that’s all they’ll need.
Only way I can see them getting to Helm now is underwater via the Northern Wyrm’s blessing or underground. … Oh gods, is that dark background in the chapter cover meant to be the singing caves?!
Ooh, I hadn’t considered that. Erin would have to be truly desperate to consider the Caves, though.
I’m more concerned about that beam of light passing through him on the cover, lighting up one eye. I’m not sure it’s just a stylistic choice anymore, because yeah, VD has no idea how Erin structures his memories, but he’s had his mind raided at least once by the Glort, as you mentioned…and as the Lady’s domain seems to be the mind, I absolutely wouldn’t rule out that *she* could tear into his memories if so inclined.
WAIT a sun…Caliban said on 2.4.8 that starfire is “something else entirely” than elemental Fire…what if Kendal’s/Vash’s power is an altered version of Light or something???
Well, Starfire comes from Starmetal, and Kendal’s skeleton is coated with the stuff like Wolverine. If Starmetal were associated with the Lady, then it would also be associated with VD, but he specifically said “There’s no ME in you!” back during the Tynan Battle, so Starmetal is probably something else entirely.
“And what I transmuted on the ship… I’m not sure it was Void OR Light at the end.”
Yeah, it seemed too rainbow and sparkly for Light. Nice to get confirmation from Dainix on that.
Hmm. Intriguing theorizing on the previous page as to soul-as-crucible versus pure-Primordial-Fire, and what soul and Fire can to do together versus what Fire can do alone in terms of transmuting. On the other hand, Fire is quite literally called “Fire, the Transmuter” in the first page of Aurora Volume 1, so that, combined with Dainix’s (and Tahraim’s!) assessment of what he did–draw out the material’s essence and change its form, not fundamentally change the element…
Time will tell. I’m sure it’ll be interesting.
Wuh-oh, looks like Erin & co. have been found out.
To the alt text. That is not a good rule, as the application of it often boils down to punishing players for things you never told them weren’t allowed
Random prediction for way later: Falst is going to absolutely hate Erin’s father
Oh I hope that each spell is slightly different based on the caster when you have different birds based on who casts that spell. It would be a nice little detail, on the other hand I don’t think this is the Champion, he hasn’t used magic before.
OH so that’s why Falst hasn’t mentioned his light abilities yet. If Void Dragon takes over then he’ll know that Falst is a threat if Erin knows. Naturally, Falst immediately told Dainix but he hasn’t had an alone wmoment with the latter ever since my man turned into a rock. First they’re with the other ignans, then with Caliban, then Tess finds them, and now they’re with Erin; the ONE person Falst can’t tell.
OK I tried leaving this comment on the last page but it didn’t work so I’m trying again! I wanted to point out a parallel I noticed about Erin and Tam. If someone has already said this then I apologize! But anyway, now that we know the void dragon and light dragon really are two sides of the same power, if we’re going with the theory that they each represent a different aspect of desire then I think Erin and Tam’s different personalities show an interesting contrast… If the light dragon represents free will and the void dragon represents base desire and instinct, then it makes sense that VD hates Erin so much, lol. He is ALL free will and individual thought; the only times VD is in control is when he (sometimes literally) WRESTLES control away from Erin. Whereas I’m very excited to see more of Tam because at least from what we’ve seen of him so far, he’s much more dogmatic and actually seems to relinquish free will far more often in service of LD, even going so far as to use “we” instead of “I” when referring to himself a couple times during the boat fight. I just thought this was interesting! LOVE THIS COMIC. VERY EXCITED. SORRY BUT WHEN THE MESSENGER BIRD (dragon?) SHOWED UP I GOT EXCITED SUCKS FOR THE TEAM THOUGH
I see four possibilities for who might have sent this bird. First, it could be the rest of Erin’s family, since they haven’t heard from him since the storm, and they presumably haven’t heard from Tess after she found them. Second, it might be Tarren, trying to figure out if their boat (and crew) survived the trip to Helm. Third, it could be Theia or Shrike, since we know they set out separately to track them down. Most ominously, it could be the paladins themselves, using it to track him. We’ve already seen how they can be used that way.
I think Red has said somewhere that the spell’s range is limited. Somebody who doesn’t know they’re on this exact island would likely not be able to find them this way.
If you look at panel six the image does not match Erin’s spell or Zuurith design or other images from Arc One chapter twelve and later in book one. It implies a different signature/culture I think.
That would be INCREDIBLE 😂 I didn’t even consider it until you said it but now I REALLY want to see Erin getting fullnamed by his mom in front of the squad.
Erin Ruunaser. We’ve been trying to reach you concerning your cars extended warranty. You should have received something in the mail about your cars extended warranty. Since we have not gotten a response, we are giving you a final courtesy call before we close out your file.
Anyone remember the extremely-shiny slightly-rainbow bubble effect on the glort static, that looked EXACTLY like the the extremely-shiny slightly-rainbow bubble effect on the not-Light Dainix made?
You know, it probably should have hit me last time, but this messenger bird thing is really making me think about something that is basically a non-consensual unavoidable tracking spell. Like what if someone has an abusive ex that’s a mage? You’re just gonna have to kill them buddy, because you can never run far or fast enough.
*to the tune of we just got a letter from Blues Clues* we just got a wind bird! we just got a wind bird! we just got a wind bird, wonder who it’s from?
oh golly me it’s dainix
oh my golly me, its a birb!
oh golly me it’s Falst
Oh golly me it’s Erin.
Oh golly it’s me Voidy
oh golly me it’s erin’s hubris
This is THE best comment in this format lol
(Also if this manual sixth-level comment never renders at all I’m going to be so mad. If the system insists on bumping it back up to fifth level I’ll be disappointed but at least it will still exist.)
Yeah it got bumped up to fifth level. Fair enough.
Also, to clarify, my previous comment was in reply to the hubris comment.
I wonder who’s following the wind bird
I wonder rather who sent it. We do know (from asks) that there are mages in the Paladin ranks. How likely is it that one of the Septrenn (if one or more of them are indeed leading this contingent) is also a mage? I wanna say it’s unlikely, but who knows.
On a side note, do I read a sporkles tease there from Dainix? Sounds like it.
Or its dad, what with Erin being effectively MIA and all. And they sent Tess after him and no ones heard from her since.
Didn’t the Zuurith guards have lacrimas like that?
Yep. If the rank and file Zuurith guards have access to those lacrimas, then surely an organisation like the Paladins have them too.
Erin told Tam his name, I think tracking spells are being turned against us.
Look closely. It’s not shaped like a bird.
(I hope an actual person sees this. I have realized my messages don’t go through, probably because I refuse to use a real email, but I hope some mod still sees this. Maybe even pass the idea along.)

HAHAHAHA ‘performing the Odysseus’ is being added to my vocabulary right now! it took me a minute but that is SO Erin
“Performing the Odysseus” is SO PERFECT! I’m adding that to my vocabulary!
I KNEW Erin telling Tam his name would bite him in the ass!
Tam was the archivist, right?
From the last time we saw her, I’m not sure she’s convinced that Erin is the villain that the other Paladins think he is.
Tam’s the Champion. The junior archivist was Theia.
Tam is the paladin that attacked them on the boat, whose name we only learned more recently after he was being ferried back to safety bslung beneath a dragon.
I’ve never been so early
I don’t like how the spell is dragon shaped. seems suspicious
That’s probably fine!
oh no. Oh No! And they can’t even hide!
Aurora Question #58: Who do you think is responsible for the Wind Birb?
Judging by the Chapter Art, a Paladin-Allied Wind Mage or a Paladin with a Wind Lacrima. There are others it could be, like Shrike or Asera or any number of new forces, but now seems like a strange time to bring them into the story. 989, if we’re counting the double-page spread from “Fire and Stone” as one page.
It is already taken as just one page in the 990 count, I think.
I’d say 990.

I wouldn’t underestimate the Dragon, personally. The more he gets stymied, the less arrogant he’ll become.

Oh I hope that each spell is slightly different based on the caster when you have different birds based on who casts that spell. It would be a nice little detail, on the other hand I don’t think this is the Champion, he hasn’t used magic before.

Oh no, Erin’s getting smug again >_>
Hmm, opening with the full name. I’m guessing it is Erin’s mom and she is very disappointed in him.
That would be INCREDIBLE 😂 I didn’t even consider it until you said it but now I REALLY want to see Erin getting fullnamed by his mom in front of the squad.
You KNOW Erin has a bunch of middle names too.
YES! Oh I want him to get full-named in front of the squad because you know Falst would mock him mercilessly about it after!

You know, it probably should have hit me last time, but this messenger bird thing is really making me think about something that is basically a non-consensual unavoidable tracking spell. Like what if someone has an abusive ex that’s a mage? You’re just gonna have to kill them buddy, because you can never run far or fast enough.
Technically the messenger bird has a limited range, but uh… kill ’em anyway.
“what are you gonna do, think really hard about a song?” BE RUNNING UP THAT ROAD, BE RUNNING UP THAT HILL
*to the tune of we just got a letter from Blues Clues* we just got a wind bird! we just got a wind bird! we just got a wind bird, wonder who it’s from?
this is my favorite spell. its existence sounds like it would make writing simultaneously so easy and so so difficult
*side-eyes the “Those Dang Phones” Trope Talk*
Bop!
Is that a stranger things reference?
