. The Champion stares at Kendal in surprise, thinking. They hang motionless in the sky.
. After a minute, Kendal starts, “Then–”
. “My Lady,” the Champion says softly.
. “Champion.”
. “I have need of your strength.”
. “No. No, you don’t have to–” Kendal starts in alarm, but he can’t do anything.
. “Fear not,” the Light Dragon says. “If victory must come at a cost — the burden will be mine alone.” The Champion opens his mouth, light swirling around it into a beam.
Sry I’m late, I was at a playdate/sleepover yesterday so didn’t have time
Ummm… I really like the Champion’s character
The boat is DOOMED.
I wonder if that serpent thing is the Collector’s or not?
Erin is doing… bad. I get the feeling he strained himself very hard with that all-element cast, and the Diadem definitely didn’t help. He’ll probably be out of it for a while.

Hey, you can’t blame him for answering Kendal’s answer, now. Also, you gotta keep in mind, he hasn’t read 800 or so pages of comics to know these people. To him, that’s a simple trolley problem, and he’s trying his best to pull the lever to switch tracks
On the Nintendo topic, Panel 1 Micheal’s face reminds me of Miis…
Also, will Kendal finally be pushed into doing something more morally regrettable? Or will the attack be stopped only because the job will have already been done by the big sea beast? I’m excited to see how we’ll get out of this one.
In all fairness to Michael, the people on the boat all know about Erin and the dragon, and most of them have directly attacked Michael anyway. He can probably consider them enemy combatants, and vice versa.
Man the atmosphere in those first three panels is fantastic, I always love it when intense moments just slow down like that and the characters stop and take it all in, the rain falling and the sudden stillness really emphasizes it so well.
Now that I’m over my initial OH BALLS reaction, those first three panels are lovely. I like how you can “hear” them: the rain, the thunder, but our characters quiet as Michael parses what Kendal just said. We already know he’s got a kind heart: nevermind saving the family early on, the smile he gave when the child said they “like[d] his wings”. He doesn’t want to kill anyone, and he’s genuinely upset that Kendal and co. are making this even harder than it has to be.
I’m not sure I’m being fair, but it bothers me that he hands it off to the Lady to keep his hands clean. I can’t even put my finger on it — it’s her war, after all, not his, and I’m guessing she needs avatars to act for her, just as Walter does. But it’s like…he tried to foist it off on Kendal, and now to the Lady. And it feels like he’s missing the point.
Walter actually makes a similar point early on, about Erin vs Walter attempting to kill Alinua and Kendal when they first met. “Does it matter? Will it matter if they find you?” And the truth is…it doesn’t. If this continues, innocents are going to die, regardless of whether it’s Michael or Lucy holding the sword. It’s one thing to insist that the only way to end the threat of the Void Dragon is to kill the host, and so far everyone else keeps getting in his way (which, I mean. Maybe stop and think about that, dude.) But I don’t like how he’s sort of. Trying to foist it on everyone else. As if he has no say.
…Which I get is the point: Kendal is just sort of maybe kinda figuring out that even if he is hellbent on rescuing Vash, how he does it is up to him, and he’s decided he wants to a) Help Erin first b) Help other people and see new sights along the way c) Maybe not get himself killed in the process, we’re still on the fence with that one, whereas Michael is adament there is only one way to do his job, because that is what Lucy is telling him.
Yeah, I’m probably not being fair to him. And I like him as a character. But as I said, I’m no saint, and I really want a little cathartic Kendal-Yeeting, Sea-Monster-Eating, Lightning-Fist-To-The-Face butt-kicking after the distress he’s served our Squad. (And I have GOT to stop turning my comments into run-on essays, I’m sorry folks XD)
To be fair to Anakin Lightwalker here, he did recognize his hypocrisy by answering Kendal’s question honestly. Unfortunately for Kendal and everyone on that boat, that answer is “yes”.
I have a feeling that boat is about to be swallowed up by a leviathan and Michael is just going to drop Kendal, thinking the job is done. Kendal is a “void”, after all, not an innocent to be saved.
I love how the Champion is composed in this page. The slow, deliberate turning of the first three panels; he ponders Kendal’s words, makes his decision, and makes peace with the terrible thing he must do. The slow pace adds depth to his action. In the other panels we can’t see his face as he prepares the attack; hidden to make him look threatening, or hidden in shame at what he’s doing?
For all our talk of hypocrisy and ignorance, we can’t forget the Champion is fundamentally driven by the want to protect others from a being that means them, and the universe, harm. His first appearance was him defending a helpless family from a monster spawned from V.D.’s corruption. He truly doesn’t want to harm the gang, but due to his Paladin dogma, L.D.’s presence pressing him on, and miscommunication, he can’t see any other option or will listen to any other option. Tragic, really.
If L.D. herself is powering that blast (and lessening the guilt on the Champion for the act), then it’s going to be powerful; as in, make a hole in the hull powerful. The gang might have had a small chance of getting out of this if the metal hull held and only the wood burned, but if the hull is compromised, this ship is doomed.
Either Kendal has to think fast against the champion now, Tess or another member of the gang tries to take the shot, or whatever Alinua saw makes it’s appearance and startles the Champion into stopping the attack. Whatever it is, it needs to be done now.
Ah yes, Paragon vs Paragon, loved that Trope Talk video. Two people who are certain they know what is right, and what must be done and sacrificed for the “greater good”… and are in direct opposition with each other and are completely unwilling/unable to sit down and talk it out. I actually feel kind of bad for Michael, he is trying to prevent the literal end of the world after all. And in literally any other situation he would be right to go straight for killing Erin, but there isn’t any way to prove that he’s wrong right now. There’s a reason that Erin threatened suicide all the back in 1.7.25, the VD is just that bad.
And for all Michael knows the Void Dragon can have been be pulling a very convincing “fighting from the inside” act to fool the rest of the floof squad in order to get their protection; pretending to let “Erin” regain control of himself while actually it’s just the VD playing human…. We know that isn’t the case, but Michael doesn’t. And he can only work with what he knows, and what the Light Dragon tells him.
A nice sharp sword might work.
Or ‘Aren’t you supposed to HELP people? Why can’t you help US get rid of the dragon?’ Help them get to the monastery so they can disconnect VD?
If you kill all the people that can contain void possessed Erin, you will increase the odds of the VD escaping because you will be weakened from the fight with everyone while VD is at perfect strength.
Maybe the one in a million immunities present on the ship? The hope that if Erin can find a way to kick out Voidy that means every subsequent Dark Avatar could do the same?
Kinda hoping for a good shoulder dislocation move, myself. Legs around the torso and *twist*. Suddenly very difficult to concentrate and aim for Michael. But the sort of thing that could heal up before round 2.
Mean but LD has decided the needs of the many out way the needs of the few or the one. At least Michael feels ashamed of not being able to save those innocent of any fault.
I actually live in this page how everything seems so QUIET. Like the world is muffled and they’re hanging alone in the sky.
Also, if Kendal does any of the various ✨violent things✨ that to Michael he’s gonna get dropped in the water. Which means he probably will. SOMEONE’S gotta fall in the water!
Oh no. Ohhhhh no. Michael and Lucy are gearing up to annihilate the ship and everyone on it, huh?
Aaaaaugh Kendal’s expressions. They’re killing me on this page. The look on his face in panel 3, when Michael is visibly thinking over what he asked. The dawning horror in panel 4. He tried so hard to get Michael to listen. So, so hard.
What do ya’ll think about the possibility of Alinua pulling a Pinocchio whale with the giant sea monster thing? Getting swallowed could be a way for them all to escape undetected if Anakin Skylaser sinks their ship.
Prediction: Kendal has a sword and is probably capable of starfire, also if the leviathan is collector controlled I can only possibly wonder which character it would target. Paladin may be a very fun morally complex antagonist but I cannot wait for him to get wrecked for it. Also I’ve been considering it and I’m pretty sure that the paladin still isn’t technically a hypocrite as he hasn’t directly stated “I would never kill an innocent”. He doesn’t want to (as has been clearly shown) but if push comes to shove he’s willing to, and calling him a hypocrite is the same as calling Kendal a hypocrite for not wanting to murder the paladin but then murdering the paladin for his latest action. Only I’f directly stated can you for sure call one a hypocrite.
I kinda love the idea that Kendal using starfire draws the Collector’s attention and then he and the floof squad can go “Hey Champ, do you want to fight an evil that wants to wipe out all life that we WON’T stop you from killing? Kill her!”
Might massively screw up the scale of the world depending on what young Lightwalker’s been up to between our first meeting and now. If he only found them because Theia let him know Erin was traveling east from Zuurith, it makes sense. If he randomly stumbled across them on his way towards The Storm, no way did the Collector cross an ocean faster than the Champion (who had over a week head start).
Their effectiveness is entirely irrelevant to my enjoyment of the scenario.
Why did you feel the need to comment this? Take your compulsive negativity elsewhere, please.

I honestly used to feel like The Champion would have joined the main cast, and that I read this page. :P.
I can’t wait to see how this resolves in the next page! But my first thought seeing Michael opening their mouth was: Kendal should just cover Michaels mouth with his palm. I haven’t yet decided if it would be funnier if it worked because of the physical barrier or because of the sheer confusion that would undoubtedly cause.
I just have to say, I love the pacing/character-driven story you’ve made. There’s always time for a few panels of a quiet, contemplative moment, even of an antagonist making the decision to kill the main characters. And it makes sense! Every character is both internally consistent and realistically flawed, their traits affecting their decision-making, even if we’d say it’s the wrong one.
Also, love a good paragon fight. Especially when it’s between people on the “same side”, somehow while everyone is making logical decisions!
Honestly, from their perspective it does. They have no reason to believe Erin can be permanently freed, so every moment he lives is another chance for VD to escape and doom everyone. Kendal and Dainix alone rebuffed Michael’s attempt to just kill Erin, and now that the Diadems are gone he’s got no chance to try again. If there’s no way to get Erin and not them, so be it.

LD: Anakin can have just a LITTLE war crime, as a treat.
Oh, well THIS is interesting!!
He does have a conscience! Or the dragon does. Or both.
This is more ethically complicated than I first thought now.

Or at least, early?)
Oh, wait, hold on. It’s possible I misread the situation. Oh no.

WOW okay. Think if Kendal were to cover the guys mouth his head would explode? Hypothetically of course.
Like sparky sparky boom woman from Korra?
Or that one scene in Multiverse of Madness
Kendal? You’ll stop holding back now, right? Right?

Possessed Micheal used Divine Blast

LIGHT DRAGON LIGHT DRAGON
MICHAEL QUALMS???
KENDAL’S SO SCREWED
I’ve been forming coherent thoughts about schoolwork for three hours I will not be doing this for Aurora today
In all fairness to Michael, the people on the boat all know about Erin and the dragon, and most of them have directly attacked Michael anyway. He can probably consider them enemy combatants, and vice versa.
Oh no he’s gonna Godzilla the ship
“My Lady,” he says, his eyes downcast,
“I have need of your strength.”
“No, you don’t have to -!” Kendal protests,
Held out at arm’s length.
“Fear not. If victory must come at a cost-
The burden will be mine alone,”
The Lady tells him, light burning in his jaws
As white as gleaming bone.
The Champion goes still, a moment of doubt
But a prayer to his Lady returns him to route
Man the atmosphere in those first three panels is fantastic, I always love it when intense moments just slow down like that and the characters stop and take it all in, the rain falling and the sudden stillness really emphasizes it so well.
Ooooooooh, so the Light Dragon sucks as well, got it

In the split-second they have before Michael nukes the ship? I say a sword through his head.
Break his limbs.
break his everything. shatter his mind and spine. let him know only madness in his final moments.
Don’t bring that stuff to my comments.
Maybe the one in a million immunities present on the ship? The hope that if Erin can find a way to kick out Voidy that means every subsequent Dark Avatar could do the same?
Punch him in the mouth
My money is on a Kamehameha beam battle with Voidy and/or the Demon
Kendall. M’dude. You have a *free hand with a sword.* Pretty sure that sword to the face would redirect his attention.
Kinda hoping for a good shoulder dislocation move, myself. Legs around the torso and *twist*. Suddenly very difficult to concentrate and aim for Michael. But the sort of thing that could heal up before round 2.
tbh the very first thought I had was to grab his head and wrench it around so the pew-pew laser becomes yet another glowy skybeam

Anakin Skylaser is now my favorite nickname for the Champion.

I think he’s definitely redeemable… He just needs to be chucked into the ocean first.
I guess there is still bope for him. I’m just surprised that he’s THIS bad. Lol
god the third panel…it tickles my brain, i love it
Kendal: [reaches over and closes Champion’s mouth]
Champion: …shit
Kendal: “A true paragon would never allow several innocents to come to harm just to stop their enemy”
The Champion: “Trolley problem go brrr”

I think that would just get his hand ripped off
Careful you don’t break your oath, Mr. Paladin sir
This is where michael realizes he doesnt have hold of kendal. Kendal has hold of him
That is some… interesting moral reasoning. “My conscience won’t let me do this. You do it instead, that way I’m clear!”
It’s more, “I know intellectually this must be done but I’m now struggling to resolve it emotionally, so I need your help to do it instead”
Michael’s behavior no longer qualifies as “logical,” and I am freaking out that the Lady is 100% supporting him rn
Honestly, from their perspective it does. They have no reason to believe Erin can be permanently freed, so every moment he lives is another chance for VD to escape and doom everyone.
