In the ship’s hold, Falst sits against the wall, carving into an air lacrima with his claws. It suddenly lets out an explosive burst of air, knocking Falst back a little. “Not quite,” he mutters, writing something down in a book. Then he pauses, hearing Erin and Dainix coming down the stairs.
“It’s really not that bad–” Dainix is saying.
“YET,” Erin interrupts him. “Sea-sickness is a bit like being slowly poisoned. Best to catch it early so you can rest and stave off the worst of it.”
“Oh.” Then, “You knew this could happen?”
“Of course I–” Erin starts, then interrupts himself, putting a hand to his head. “Oh. Yes, I knew, and it didn’t occur to me that you wouldn’t.”
“It’s all right,” Dainix tells him, sitting down on his hammock. “It’s not like I wouldn’t have come if I’d known. If the monks can help me, any discomfort is worth it.”
“Still, I apologize. I’d hoped the lacrimas were smoothing the water enough to eradicate the risk. The roughness of the voyage is the primary factor, but some people are very susceptible regardless.”
“Problems already?” Falst asks, wandering over to them.
“Hardly,” Erin says, folding his arms over his chest. “Dainix just needs rest, and frankly after last night so do the rest of us–”
“What are you spellcarving?” Dainix interrupts, looking at the lacrima in Falst’s hand.
“What are you–? HEY!” Erin yelps in indignation as Falst holds up the lacrima to him.
“Mind recharging this? It’s been very uncooperative,” Falst says.
Hammocks are used on ships specifically because they keep things smoother, actually! Because the ship is moving, when the hammock swings in response it stays more still
Anything that allows you to preserve your own inertia will help. If you’re resting on something that can move independently from the rest of the ship, and you’re not making it move, then inertia will make it move exactly opposite to the movements of the ship.
Of course the hammock can mostly do that in only one axis, not the other, so depending on where it’s attached it’ll help against pitch or against roll, but that’s still better than nothing.

I’m weird. A hammock wouldn’t do me much good, but closing my eyes works great.
In general, though, staying well hydrated and avoiding rich fatty foods will also help. Many people swear by carbonated beverages, especially (of course) Coca-Cola…
Erin is also getting Dainix down closer to the ship’s center of rotation, which will lessen the amount of rolling and pitching Dainix has to contend with. That’s another classic solution. Me, I’m one of those folks who just needs to know where Down really is, and who gets confused when the walls stop being vertical. For folks like me, being able to see the horizon is better.
Most people adapt after a few days, and afterward are able to function normally, but some people never do.
interesting! I always assumed that, with motion sickness, you’d want to avoid anything that makes you move around more. Swinging independently on an already moving ship seems extra-nauseating to my motion-sickness-prone brain, but I guess it does make sense that preserving inertia would help. always glad to learn new things!
I get the feeling that the hammock fixes things by letting the motion be visible, as motion sickness isn’t just on the ruffness of the motion but rather not seeing how much your balance says you’re bouncing about.
He apologises for forgetting to remember that not everyone knows all he does! And humility a few pages back? Erin, you ARE evolving! Just… uh… give poor Dainix something medicinal, please? Take it from me. Just lying down inside a hull that’s giving you a bit of seasickness is… not entirely the right thing to do, honestly.
Erin apologizes that he thought that Dainix
Knew about seasickness.
He leads him below to get some rest,
We’re Falst is working with quickness.
Dainix asks Falst what he’s spellcarving,
Seeing the wind lacrima in his grip.
Erin is outraged that it has been stolen,
Sigils scratched in with a claw-tip.
So, for people who thought it was allergies, did you think Erin would explain that the sea can make people sick, but also that that isn’t what’s happening here?
Yeah, needs a few more adjustments to really capture that windswept hair look.
Now I understand what Falst is doing; he’s experimenting and expanding his knowledge of spellcarving. In the dungeon he was forced to cave a stone lacrima, which he did, but he wasn’t confident doing so as he only studied life. I bet he doesn’t want to be caught out again so he’s studying other lacrima types and spells; having two people in the party with that knowledge is a good redundancy to have.
Tiredness exacerbating seasickness? Honestly a good shout given what they were doing all day and night yesterday, and at least Dainix should be easier to get to sleep than Kendal. … Oh! Does this mean it’s Dainix’s turn for a dream sequence via Caliban?!
Just as well Erin pushed for comfort; I can’t imagine how much worse Dainix would be if those calming spells weren’t installed. While Erin assuming Dainix knows about sea-sickness is not great, him realising this and apologising for it, is. Next to Alinua, Dainix has the most doubts about Erin’s quasi-leadership; a bit of humility and practicality now could go a long way later.
Prediction for next week: … Don’t really have one this week. Transition back to the gang on deck? Focus on Dainix as he’s drifting off to a dream sequence? Erin curious about what Falst is trying to do?
My prediction is the collector as the most likely to be seen foreshadowed, possibly as a red herring for the other threats.
Next is seeing what Shrike, Trusk, and Theia are up to and their rough where’s abouts. If I were to go further in detail I would put money on Theia getting some of that training from shrike.
After this is Michel/the Champion mid flight. An aerial view from his perspective showing either helm as he heads to intercept the party, or trailing behind them and we get another bird’s eye view of the stretch between Zurrith and Argist.
I am definitely cheating by making three (technically six and a half[?]) predictions so If I am right it may be luck. If I am wrong, then happily so!
You should go back above deck and watch the horizon. Sea sickness comes from your brain getting confused about the difference between feeling like you’re moving because you are relative to the sea and it not looking like you’re moving because you aren’t relative to the boat. This is why VR gives you motion sickness, because the game makes it look like you’re moving but you’re just standing in your living room. If you look at the part of your environment that is moving, it resolves the difference and helps with the sea sickness.
Falst is so unapologetically bold. The very definition of chutzpa- Yiddish word that the entertainment industry has embraced from its Eastern European subculture from ghetto German Jewish descendants (nerve or audacity). You almost always get a colorful story explaining it’s meaning from Yiddish speaking descendants.
Erin is like an ivory-tower college professor who’s knowledge of the theory is unparalleled, whereas Falst is a field researcher who’s process is poking the thing with a stick in a controlled and recorded manner.

i cannot possibly imagine how being in a hammock is going to make the seasickness better
Hammocks are used on ships specifically because they keep things smoother, actually! Because the ship is moving, when the hammock swings in response it stays more still
Hammocks decrease the amount of the ship’s rocking that you experience, so apparently they help quite a bit.
Anything that allows you to preserve your own inertia will help. If you’re resting on something that can move independently from the rest of the ship, and you’re not making it move, then inertia will make it move exactly opposite to the movements of the ship.

Huh. Today I learned a thing. Nifty!

First three panels are an utter riot. I’d say something about “We’ll make a mad scientist out of him yet”, except he clearly already is one.
SCUBA Lacrima, maybe?
A SCUBA lacrima… what a wonderful phrase.
Ain’t no passing craze, it’s our problem free philosophy, SCUBA lacrima
Self Contained Underwater Breathing Artifact
geting a bit windy in here, i see?
i love falst
also erin learns that closing your eyes condescendingly while talking to someone isnt the best move 😀
lol

Also, Falst’s hair <3
“It’s heckin’ WIMDY”
Falst’s bangs in panel four remind me of Keiskue Takahashi from initial D
The lacrima isn’t quite right, and seasickness
Is common and easily cured for a mess
Erin apologizes that he thought that Dainix
Knew about seasickness.

Fantastic job, lol
I like the warm colour palette of this page
Yeah, needs a few more adjustments to really capture that windswept hair look.

Falsts hair is so fluffy he needs magic to style it
Im pretty sure next page is going to contain a bit of arguing
I highly doubt we’ll get a Dream Sequence, since Dainix (mortal human) tends to sleep every night as opposed to Kendal (literal god).
My prediction is the collector as the most likely to be seen foreshadowed, possibly as a red herring for the other threats.

In the last panel, we can see “ate” written in the lacrima.I think there’s an f at the bottom but it’s cut off.
Actually, I believe it’s an “L” at the bottom. Amazing catch! I didn’t even see the letters on first view.
It’s too bad Tarren didn’t come along. I’m sure they and Falst would’ve gotten along well discussing spellcarving.
Your eyes are better than mine. I can not see a glimpse of runes after being told where they are! Thank you for mentioning it @Stark!
I love seeing falst soellcarving. Thank you for making this!
Dainix and Falst… alone. After what happened last time. I am the unkillable shipper! They’re so cute!
Here here!
Ah. I assumed the joke last page was that Dainix had an undiagnosed peanut allergy. This makes sense too I guess.

Is Falst studying the wind lacrima so he can make the messenger borbs?? They’re made of wind magic right
Falst being a diligent little learner
Falst is so unapologetically bold. The very definition of chutzpa- Yiddish word that the entertainment industry has embraced from its Eastern European subculture from ghetto German Jewish descendants (nerve or audacity). You almost always get a colorful story explaining it’s meaning from Yiddish speaking descendants.
Dainix, who grew up in the desert: Why is the world moving but I’m not. It makes my tummy feel bad
Erin: …hindsight is admittedly not my strong suit
Erin is like an ivory-tower college professor who’s knowledge of the theory is unparalleled, whereas Falst is a field researcher who’s process is poking the thing with a stick in a controlled and recorded manner.
He just couldn’t resist the lacramas!
shippers:
I SMELL PROFIT
Love Dainix’s face in the last panel lol
Just agreeing with your username here, don’t mind me.
Oh thank goodness, Dainix isn’t allergic to nuts, he’s just sea sick.
I forsee a falst mage arc incoming, the very rare trope-breaking melee mage. Please red grace us with this.
artificer falst artificer falst!
That 2nd panel is me every time I use my hair dryer, if his hair gets any longer he’s gonna need one lol.
TL;DR: The fireman really being my spirit animal right now… meanwhile cat breaking stuff, like a cat.
