Due to abdominal nerve damage, I haven’t been able to feel hunger in about ten years.
And I’m also practically ace. Haven’t had much drive since I started HRT.
…Am I a deity?
(Probably not. I still need to eat, sadly. I’ve just had to learn how to recognize the feeling of “Oh, I’m really dizzy and weak, I better eat something.” Besides, a deity probably wouldn’t be in constant horrible pain from aforementioned nerve damage. >.> )
I suppose you are. Congrats!
Then again, aren’t all us aces some kind of mythical creatures? Since no one thinks we’re real anyway.
My sincerest sympathies, though. I don’t think a comment by some kid on the internet is going to make your pain easier, but know that I feel for you. That sounds absolutely awful 🙁
I don’t get thirsty, I have to watch for subtle signs of dehydration. And be careful about the fact that I love both tea and coffee. I’m not ace or aro, but I do have a lot of weird hangups about both sex and romance, that are really difficult for others to understand, so I at least know that The Struggle Is Real.
Meanwhile the others with Kendal discuss
The nature of hunger and food.
Tess wonders why he was built like this,
Why a god’s vessel would eating include.
A god without body exists dilute,
Kendal carefully explains,
But a body brings world and feeling into focus,
And mortal joys, like a lens.
I release the rhyme of “hunger” and “cakemonger” to the rest of the poetocalypse.
Marie Antoinette never said “Let them eat cake”, but Vash probably said “Let ME eat cake”.
Ah yes, the question about Kendal’s lack of void, homunculus theorising, and how his future existence may pan out. To give my two cents, I think he’ll be ok in the long run because of his combination of both a) starmetal in his body and b) Alinua’s first wild healing of him. V.D. hinted at that metal being special beyond being strong and burning hot, and I’ve got a niggling feeling Life herself may have intervened more directly in his initial healing.
On today’s episode of “Kendal learns to human”, Food, and telling the difference between hunger pangs and stab wounds. Falst and Alinua know the game by now and Dainix suspects, but Tess’s input about the nature of gods and how much the put into their incarnations is interesting. We knew Vash favoured a complex body that could look after itself while he focused on other things in combat, but it seems he also did it for pleasure a lot.
His talk about Vash using a body as a lens and sense and focus on the world is very reminiscent of how Life is using Alinua; very different gods with very different goals, but using the same technique. Not sure if Kendal’s wording and comparison was intentional to reflect this, but it’s interesting. I wonder if Life is also experiencing tastes and smells via Alinua.
Hey everyone, I’ve still been reading the comic and the comments when I have the chance, but only not got a break from the work crunch to comment. Next week may get hectic again, but I should have the chance to throw my theories around on Friday if nothing changes.
It’s hard to translate what Rousseau’s fictional princess (not Marie Antoinette, but a character created to parody people like her) actually said.
I think the best way to localize “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche” into modern English is to say, “Why don’t they just eat cake?”
Brioche isn’t really cake, but it’s also rare outside France. It’s kind of like the modern story of the rich heiress who asks why poor people don’t just make more money: it demonstrates a complete lack of comprehension of what it’s like not to live a deeply privileged life, or even awareness of one’s privileges.
Kendal can’t understand how being hungry feels
He doesn’t need food once all of his wounds are healed
Tess thinks these features for gods would just complicate
Kendal explains why the gods choose to incarnate
Oh right, this just reminded me of an analysis thingy you can do on Aurora. I’d say there are 3 easily identified characters which represent an LGBTQ identity: Kendal (ace), Falst (Gay), and Dainix (trans).
For Kendal and Falst, I’d like to highlight 1.9.23, just before the big floof squad on Falst fight. As this is quite the common interaction between ace and other LGBTQ people. (“You’re queerness isn’t obvious enough, so you don’t count”).
I’d say Dainix isn’t just a character who is trans, but all his stuff parallels this in an interesting way. He’s got some weird connection with the primordial fire (who represents change), and there is probably more I can talk about, but I’m not trans, so I can’t think of it that quickly.
Yeah, I read something along those lines too, but in this case I meant with gay something along the lines of “not heterosexual in a way that is hard to hide”, but that’s a bit too long winded to put in a quick list and have it be readable. And aside from that was that these characters represent these ideas not just on a literal level, but also on a metaphorical level.
Sure, he likes cake, but what about *ice cream*. He hasn’t tried that yet, has he?
And yeah, I can see why trying to explain a strong attraction would be difficult. I mean, there’s a reason that we tend to use words like ‘thirsty’, ‘hungry’, and ‘tasty’ to describe that urge. The desire to satiate it is on that level, though minus the actual pain involved. It might not be comfortable to be unsatiated, but it is not actually painful. ‘Heated’ is another good one, but that overlaps with the reactions of both angry and embarrassed, so it is far from perfect.
And let’s not forget ‘intoxicating’, though that one usually involves the mixing of affection and attraction.
I think if I was to try and write out a reasonably thorough description, it would take me a couple of hours to fine-tune it and I am still not sure I would be satisfied with the results. It’s a complicated set of feelings that is both subtle and hits like a sledgehammer.
Don’t bother, thousands of writers have already attempted that before you and it still doesn’t make much sense. I think that’s something you truly have to experience yourself to fully get. And for those of us that don’t, well it’s always going to seem a bit alien.
Like, you people describe something using weird metaphores, some of which involve fire, to try to pitch this concept. (For the record not you specifically, just allos being weird.) Fire, and fever, and madness, and hunger, and all of that is supposed to make it seem worthwile? It’s fascinating, really.
That is why people write stories, to paint a picture that can be shown to other people the specifics. Red has found a good medium to compare and contrast in. And she does it so well!
I have a whole mini-essay about Falst’s attitude, but for now I’ll just say that I think Falst is always in a mood for the same reason Sandor Clegane was always in a bad mood: “Experience.”
Anyone else getting whiplash from how fast the character that’s their current favorite changes? Seriously: this page alone it went from Kendal to Ali to Dainix to Tess back to Kendal and back to Tess in the short time it took to read this!
But the real question is: does Vash like PANcakes?
very important research going on here, yessiree. hubris mcsicktats is gonna be upset he missed it…
it’s nice to have some nice cooldown shenanigans after how fast-paced the first part was. the party’s together, their course is set, now it’s time to get a bit silly…
It would appear that Kendal has become Dainix, Falst, and Tess’ new science project. 🙂
Oddly, Erin wasn’t the lead on that, but he is still probably focused on getting Alinua to manifest Life in controlled conditions.
“manifest Life in controlled conditions” I CAN’T! That’s not how these tropes work (generally, Red could always do something different) and I can’t WAIT to see Erin try to make it work!
Interesting. Hunger doesn’t give me physical pain so much as a sensation of hollowness, fatigue, focus problems, and anger at everything if left unattended too long. But I’ve likely never been as hungry as Falst has, and “bad feeling” is definitely accurate.
Also, that alt text? MOOD, I spent literal decades so CONFUSED by–anyway.
I love this page. The dialogue is A++ throughout (I love Kendal), and the insight into how the gods work is neat.
If you don’t mind the short version, attraction like that is comparable to hunger to an extent, but closer to emotions or a feeling of emptiness. It is a need or want to be filled. And no it is not satisfying enough in it self to be worth while, But from experience, it is more than worth it if there is mutual affection between both participants.
The Floof Squad does SCIENCE!!!
There’s just so much goodness in this page. All of it is my favourite. Maybe “Amazing.” a little bit extra because Tess, and all the possible readings of that comment. But honestly, everything.
“Part of why” – well not I’m curious what Vash’s OTHER reasons for liking cake are. Sentimental, cake-centric memories? High calories? Cake is Just Good, Actually?
Also, they obviously need to experiment to see if Kendal also likes cake! Science! TASTY science!
I love how Tess is always sitting in the weirdest places, Alinua is sitting on a couch in the room and everyone’s crowded around it and Tess is just sitting on some desk or dresser or something. I’ve seen her sit on a rooftop, a mountainside and now this and I don’t think I’ve ever seen her sit on a chair. I know she’s normally seen outside and not usually near any chairs which probably has something to do with it, so the most normal thing I’ve seen her sit on I think is a rock near the fireside. I really enjoy little affectations like where and how a character is likely to sit, so I can’t help but notice
I was waiting for you to say “why Vash likes donuts” but Kendal saying that Vash canonically likes cake is good too. I take these wins.
Also a question for anyone in the comments to join in speculation. IF gods are spread out like this and not focused in their perception of the world, how do they perceive one another? Do they need incarnations to interact with each other on a more meaningful level?
If the world of Aurora does celebrations much like ours, then cake might be associated with sharing and caring. I’m just imagining Vash and his citizens sharing a giant sheet cake or twenty…
This has caused me to realize that I do not know what hunger feels like either. My roommate and I have been discussing it and calling our peers to survey them.

Crude lenses and “burning glasses” may have been used as early as the Bronze Age, depending on who you think is credible and what you think counts as a lens. Spectacles were invented in Europe sometime between 1250-1300 CE, but there are accounts of ancient Greeks and Romans using improvised vision aids like concave gems and glass spheres.
Aurora tech doesn’t fit neatly into a historical time period, but most of it is actually more analogous to Renaissance through early Industrial Revolution. Science exists, at least, places like the Aseran Academy use a discipline similar to science, which allows (apparently most) people to have a fairly clear understanding of how their world, and its magic, works.
There are a lot of nearly-universal misconceptions about the history of technology and societal development… A lot of stuff that most people think is medieval is actually pretty modern, and vice versa. Hollywood and at least 200 years of bad or deliberately inaccurate history education have left us very confused!
Pedantry corner: You technically don’t need a lens to focus light, if you can make a pinhole camera (a.k.a. “Camera Obscura”), and don’t mind the image being upside down. You can focus it by moving the projection surface.

Tess: “Why would a god make their body be able to do stuff they don’t need to survive, sounds like a waste”

See hunger’s an very strange concept to you
If you never feel what it’s like to do

for those of you who are ace but still romantic, I think of you as pure romantics. none of the other fuss and bother.

pfffffffft oh my GODS! i am losing it at “wrong bell.”
Just the deadpan expression “wrong bell.” XD
It’s fascinating that that moment can now be called back as a joke
I messaged the the panels we need to understand that to two friends and am sending this page to a chat bc it’s so good
Also this one page alone already has probably the most Ace in-jokes i’ve ever seen in any piece of fiction ever and it’s incredible
But does Vash like garlic bread, there’s the question.
Also, Vash having a sweet tooth is a mental image I will treasure.
Meanwhile the others with Kendal discuss

I release the rhyme of “hunger” and “cakemonger” to the rest of the poetocalypse.
And as a proud representative thereof (especially since my writing of today was a tad nonsensical) I shall adopt it:
Kendal does not much comprehend hunger
But knows that Vash funded many a cakemonger
I will also *rise* to the occasion:
There once was Vash the younger
Who didn’t actually feel hunger
But as was his norm
In bodily form
He’d invariably go to the cakemonger.
i applaud you and your work!
Marie Antoinette never said “Let them eat cake”, but Vash probably said “Let ME eat cake”.
Ah yes, the question about Kendal’s lack of void, homunculus theorising, and how his future existence may pan out. The cake is NOT a lie.
“Wrong bell” is my new favorite Falst line.
“Wrong Bell”
Don’t make me become ‘Rai626 – Fan of Falst’!
Just kidding, I already am in my heart.
Both? Both. Both is good.
oh, that reminds me of what Life said to Alinua about perspective
The power of THEEEEEMMMMEEEESSSSS!
Kendal can’t understand how being hungry feels
He doesn’t need food once all of his wounds are healed

i love the idea that humanity is a like a little treat for gods.
Does not know hunger
Eating’s mere accessory
There’s no need for it
“Wrong bell.” Why is Falst such a mood 24/7??
Anyway, I relate to Vash, cake is amazing, but I gotta ask: does he like the cake or icing more?
I have a whole mini-essay about Falst’s attitude, but for now I’ll just say that I think Falst is always in a mood for the same reason Sandor Clegane was always in a bad mood: “Experience.”

Expressions, as always, are absolutely on point. I especially love falst’s changes in expression between panels 6 and 7. Thanks for making this!
THE ALT TEXT WAS SO REAL RED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This boy must be given his food IN CAKE FORM! Quick! Someone call this world’s equivalent of Uber eats!

WHAT CAKE (I like to bake and need inspiration)
IDK but I’m going to recommend carrot cake with cream cheese frosting
i second this/ literally the best kind of cake
Hi yes I also love baking and I would also like to know please
“wrong bell” lmao
The Floof Squad does SCIENCE!!!
There’s just so much goodness in this page. All of it is my favourite. Maybe “Amazing.” a little bit extra because Tess, and all the possible readings of that comment. But honestly, everything.
Imagine never eating, and then being given a fish pie. I would return to never eating again.
“Part of why” – well now I’m curious what Vash’s OTHER reasons for liking cake are! Sentimental memories? High calories? Cake is Just Good, Actually?
Also, they obviously need to experiment now to see if Kendal also likes cake. Science! TASTY science!
“Why are you eating cake?”
“For SCIENCE!!!”

It seems to me that Tess likes elevation. But that may also be a bias since most of the time we see her idle, she is trying to look at the sky.
if you are willing to take that leap in logic however, envoy the mental image of Tess in a high chair or those taller bar stools.
ha ha Now I can’t help but picture her in one of those lifeguard ladder chairs at the beach, except I don’t think she can swim that well.
You are welcome for the mental image! Tess might not swim, but the girl can FLY.
I wish I had come back here and read your comment earlier. Because *of course* Vash should like donuts.
And now I have an old AMV in my head; it’s a crossover of Trigun and Cowboy Beebop called “Tainted Donuts”
TL;DR: Let the experiment commence!
Probably one of my favourite pages so far. Kendal’s physiology is so fascinating!
Worldbuilding + Comedy = Great Page 🙂
Is anyone taking notes? Erin’s going to be peeved they started scientific investigation without him, they could at least take notes.
They could try explaining heartburn to him… like when stomach acid goes up your throat, that usually happens when I haven’t eaten for a while, or in Kendal’s case, a month or two
Now it’s probably already happened, but someone probably needed to teach Kendal how to poop as well.
Remember how, a few pages back, Alinua said Kendal seemed “somehow lighter”? Yeah. It’s already happened.
I’m glad someone else has been wondering about this, but in all seriousness, I’d love it if Kendal’s body was a walking corollary of the MS3K Mantra: Don’t worry about it, it’s just a [divine incarnation that has gained sapience and free will].
wait wait wait hold the mother fucking phone does this means cameras exist in auroras world!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!
No, anything that focuses light has a lens. I’m pretty sure there was a telescope in the comic at some point.

It me. In more ways than one, I’m asexual and I also don’t eat. Maybe food did something for me once, but after over a decade of depression, there really isn’t any motivation to eat beyond sustenance, and I can go a VERY long time between scratching that itch.
My healthcare plan made me go to a dietitian a while back. She was very worried about that. I’m trying my best to eat at more regular intervals :/
I’m surprised no one has mentioned the way Falst is sitting in that second panel. Red is really putting in a lot of work to give him cat-like mannerisms, and I appreciate her brilliant attention to the little details.
Btw I did the math and assuming all the arcs are the same length, the webcomic will wrap up in 24 years, in the year 2047. Jesus Christ
I just hope Red doesn’t burn herself out on Aurora, burnout can be really difficult. If you’re reading this, Red, take all the time and breaks you need
I suppose Alinua is to Life what Kendal is to Vash. What Kendal describes is exactly what the Primordial needs.
Tess: “Why would a god make their body be able to do stuff they don’t need to survive, sounds like a waste”
Kendal: “Because they think it’s fun”
Tess: “Okay, yeah, that checks”
They wanted a biology lesson.
They got a theology lesson instead.
It’s a very theological biology.
