He doesn’t seem to be that much heavier than a standard person. He’s probably a decent bit denser, might not be all that buoyant, but given his increased strength he can probably swim if he really tries?
All of Kendal’s not-quite-human qualities are fascinating. Strong, durable, memories-more-like-stories-he-was-told-than-things-he-experienced, ugh I just love characters who don’t exactly connect with humanity, weapons who weren’t meant to think.
“I BROUGHT SNACK!” declares bright Tess, entering
The room with buns in hand.
“Didn’t there used to be more of us?”
She asks, a distraction grand.
“We haven’t heard from Erin,” says Dainix to Tess,
In the room with Falst remaining,
“But Kendal went out with Alinua,” he adds,
His alchemical work sustaining.
They discuss Kendal and his refusal to rest-
Against food and sleep he seethes.
Unless he’s talking or fighting, adds Dainix,
He never even breathes.
It took me all day until I had time and internet access to write this one, and it’s a long one cause the not breathing bit is obviously going to be important later, and I am trying to make the ballad fit together as a narrative (which I’d link if I was on my laptop and not my phone.
I mean he has been shown eating before, even if he doesn’t eat as much as a mortal, and while obviously that will fuel his body there’s going to be some waste from it, which he’ll need to expel.
So probably? I feel like anything that consumes matter has to poop at some point.
Which raises the question of the Void Dragon pooping. Entire meteors of dragon crap.
I’m willing to concede that Kendal will eventually defecate (what is this comic coming to?), although his digestive process may be more efficient in minimising waste nutrients.
HOWEVER I am now very staunchly anti-dragon poop. As the primordial being of consumption, I would rather think that all matter that the Void Dragon consumes is assimilated, becoming part of whatever VD is (energy, matter, or spirit). I strongly oppose the idea that anything VD consumes could continue existing in any meaningful way. Indeed, I doubt he has a traditional digestive system at all.
Isn’t a big thing about the chimeras is that they can’t eat because they have no void consumption in them? Kendal also lacks void in his body. He genuinely might be incapable of eating and breathing.
That actually crossed my mind a couple weeks back, during the tea scene–have we actually ever seen Kendal eat or drink anything he’s been handed?
It’s been very interesting to watch Kendal’s development as someone with a character who is a similar flavor of non-mortal, albeit one who’s had a lot more practice masking his tells. I know that there’s generally a certain set of tropes that are applied to characters like this, which makes it neat to see which ones the two share (neither needs to actually breathe), which they don’t (as far as I can recall Kendal has never referred to himself in third-person), and which have yet to be confirmed (we don’t know if Kendal needs to or even can eat. My character can’t.)
Dainix does say Kendal breathes when he fights and talks, and in that one chapter in Arc 1 (chapter 11?), Kendal collapsed from lack of sleep. I think he has most of the human-mortal bodily processes, but they’re drastically more efficient and less often used.
O MY GOODNESS- VD wants to eat the sun, yeah? So, say (hypothetically) he does, will he poop out a BLACK HOLE? XD
It also consumes things so I suppose it makes a roundabout type of sense
Wow. He doesn’t need to breathe? Just what is he made of? Does the star metal give him some kind of longevity, is he still part divine as the former body of a god, or can he just hold his breath for a really long time? He’s kind of like a baby except he needs to be told how to do body functions???
It might be more to do with Alinua than with Vash. She’s the vessel of Primordial Life, and Primordial Life seems capable of rendering The Collector immortal. It’s entirely possible that Alinua has done something similar to Kendal, although I can’t imagine Red would bestow her main protagonist with true immortality.
I’m not convinced, especially with how the previous 4 chapters were all caused by Kendal being nearly dead.
I prefer to just go with the idea that Vash built this body for war. It’s as efficient as any body could possibly be.
I think it’s more that, as we’ve seen before, kendal doesn’t have any void. Void is linked to consumption. I suspect that, without void, he is much more efficient with how his body utilizes materials. biologically, we waste *a lot* of what we consume.
I’ll try not to get too far into the science, but I suspect that void here is like an analogy to entropy. If kendal isn’t fighting that, he’ll only need to breathe when he’s talking, eat when he’s healing, etc.
I’m not sure how sleeping factors into this (after all, sleep is not understood well as is), but I wouldn’t be surprised if he only needed to sleep because vash was trying to give him a dream.
I don’t mean that Kendal is immortal/can’t die, but that Alinua might have transformed his bodily functions such that his body is self-sustaining even without basic necessities. Like breathing.
My theory is that Kendal, being a Vessel and therefore not “mortal”, physically lacks the Void elemental influence of most races (see “There’s no ME in you”). Since Void is the element of consumption, Kendal likely simply doesn’t need to eat, drink or breathe!
A different consideration if you’ll pardon the intrusion. Void is consumptive but we see it manifest as things like hunger. Kendal does not have void and so is not hungry, but we do see that he is capable of eating. In my opinion, his body doesn’t do much to digest or cannot truly self sustain. He can live, but I’m not so sure about healing unassisted or aging. We haven’t had to see this attrition at play because he has been healed by Aluina at very regular intervals.
i love tess barging in with snacks at the worst possible time, with half the party still missing and the remaining two in the midst of Having A Normal One.
also the way falst was eating that bun. he’s not escaping the catboy allegations.
I mean…Considering one of the first things Kendal did in Dainix’s presence was casually break his shackles, it probably wasn’t as surprising as it could have been.I would also have to go back and check how much backstory-sharing went on, it’s possible that enough was said that Dainix could have put some clues together.
Since we’re talking about Kendall again, I was reading the older comics and realized that Kendall’s new pirate shirt is actually Erin’s! Erin mentions it and shows it the night Falst steals his bag (1.9.11). Maybe Red just thought a pirate shirt would look cool and be appropriate for a port town, but if she planned this: Wow.
Kendal is neither fully divine nor human but has aspects of both. What an interesting child! Vash and Primordial Life have touched his essence, What could that bring about?
Huh, I just realised that this is the first time we’ve seen this trio of characters together without any of the original three. I don’t want to call them “The B-Team” because that implies a hierarchy, but it’s cool that we might see a secondary “Three Man Band” dynamic here.
To be honest, I think that the whole squad is quite realistic in that they can all hang out in mixed groups, rather than being one big crowd with sub-groups. Also, although Kendal is the protagonist and Alinua might be the fixed duragonist, they are a well fleshed out set of characters as they all have their focus moments, unique interactions/dynamics, and their personal motivations addressed. Sort of like a spaghetti western but with tone armour (none of them are going to randomly die to a natural disaster- I hope).
I don’t think they are anywhere near enough to the darkest hour or a mini/mega threat for a death or permanent injury. I hope I don’t jinx it by saying that I feel like the worst that can happen is that one of them gets separated or captured – maybe by the bounty hunter?
Apologies for the long tangent, I tend to ramble 😅
Reread 1-22-37. Right before Falst uses light magic, he hears a voice tell him, “There’s breath in your body, so spend it on something!”
Kendal doesn’t have to eat because there’s no void in him. But he doesn’t have to breathe because there’s no LIGHT in him either!
Huh, I wonder if Kendal not needing to breath may be relevant during the coming Boat Arc! Sure is interesting that Kendal may be able to stay underwater for a very long time and also we’re about to go on a boat!
quick question: who and who doesn’t know about kendall? I don’t really want to read back through all the pages to find out.
Also, I see the “let’s collect scientific date on our weird friends” thing has rubbed off from erin to tess.
At this point, I’m pretty sure the whole group more or less knows about his general deal? Falst learned about it while Kendall was taking his first-ever voluntary nap, and I think it was strongly implied that Erin explained it to Dainix and Tess at the ruins off-screen. Plus, everyone was there when Vash briefly possessed Kendall at the end of the Tynan fight!
Also, I don’t think Tess cares all that much about scientific data per se, but she DOES care about testing everybody’s physical limits! It’s a rare case of nerd and jock interests converging.
oh hey it’s that thing Red was talking about on her Tumblr(about how she’d love to do this animated but that would just be. way too much work(yes i know the title text mentioned that))
Tess’s “I grew up with Erin” side is showing; Erin’s all “For science!”, and Tess is “Bet you I can eat all these fudge stripes.”
I’m sure at no point will it be necessary for Kendal to demonstrate how long he can remain underwater.
Falst: one of the five people in the world I have a meaningful personal relationship with doesn’t prioritize taking care of himself and it’s stressing me out. I just want him to eat and sleep regularly.
Dainix: Oh yeah, I noticed how he doesn’t breathe if he’s not thinking about it.
Falst:…anXIETY LEVELS SPIKING
Every time she’s on screen I want to see a hyper realistic version of tess. My painting skills are non existent though. Could grow my colored pencil skills though…
I mean, let’s be honest here. A god in this world for most of their existence are spirits, only taking physical form when meeting an important guest, give instructions or to fight. They don’t breathe, eat, drink or sleep in their normal state, cause they just don’t have the impulses for that. So ofcourse if they take on physical shape they make a body that rarely needs any of those things. Because they never create a body for prolonged use, they can basically neglect those needs as they would then never have to worry about compromising their body. So I fully think Kendal just doesn’t have those impulses either, but is stuck in a body that does require maintenance, so he needs to be reminded to do those things, cause he just never gets the urge like we do. It’s lucky enough that his body doesn’t need it that often, because his whole life is running on manual.
Wonder if his heart beats on its own? If he has a heart.
Considering Kendal likely has a stomach (he can eat, after all) I’d wager he likely has a heart. It’s probably not good for much except getting stabbed though, considering what we know about him now, haha.
So this panel soft confirms a theory I’ve had for a while now.
When the Void Dragon spoke to Kendal in the Tynan arc, it noted that “there’s no *me* in you”. My theory is that Void is the element of consumption, and is why mortals need to eat, drink and breathe to subsist.
Since Kendal is not a “mortal” in that his form is a god-made construct, his soul would lack Void presence. This would mean he has no need to eat, drink or breathe (except for functions such as speech, which isn’t itself a consumptive process).
Sleep, however, is more of a refresh/reorganization of the self, rather than a consumptive process. So whether he likes it or not, he still needs to sleep.
You know, I think Red might not know how to draw someone nomming something without making them look adorable. I’m pretty sure that shot of Falst in panel 8 is meant to convey a sort of shocked/stunned reaction to Dainix’s observation. Wide eyes, small irises, frozen in the act of biting into something while the brain tries to process what he just heard. But it’s just so cute that everything else gets lost.
LMAO I love Tess so much. And her snacks. Yay snacks! They remind me of these red bean paste stuffed bun thingies that some student groups sold at my university, alongside red bean stuffed sesame balls. They were really, really good.
Fascinating tidbit about Kendal. A while ago, Red posted something on Tumblr about how unnaturally still he is and how, if this were adapted into animation, that’s something she would want to portray. I didn’t realize it extended to hardly ever needing to breathe, though!
And yes, this detail seems like it could be highly relevant for ocean arc shenanigans, along with Tahraim’s assertion that soulfire can burn at the bottom of the ocean. Hmm.
i love gods/godlike beings not breathing. it’s such a little subtle detail about someone, yet so deeply unnerving. how long would it take you to notice if someone you were around wasn’t breathing? you might feel unsettled for some reason, or maybe even like they were eerily still (if they weren’t the type of person to constantly move around, like Kendal is), but i think it would take a while for you to realize *why*. it’s neat.
While I am very excited for Tess to be excited and for Falst getting along with the others, I don’t think testing Kendal’s limits is a good idea. he only recently learned that he had limits. Additionally, I think they are going to find out how long Kendal can be underwater. I suspect he’ll be like stitch in that respect – much too dense to be buoyant by conventional means.
OMG TESS YAYYY I LOVE TESS

i enjoy your dedication to your fav.

Watch Kendal just try to walk on the seafloor instead of swimming. XD
Wouldn’t he be super heavy, can he even swim if he tries?
He doesn’t seem to be that much heavier than a standard person. He’s probably a decent bit denser, might not be all that buoyant, but given his increased strength he can probably swim if he really tries?
But he’s made of magic metal. So he floats.
This is exactly true; Red has gone on record saying that both Tess and Kendal are too heavy to swim and would therefore sink if thrown into water.
That’s amazing
when/where was this said
All of Kendal’s not-quite-human qualities are fascinating. Strong, durable, memories-more-like-stories-he-was-told-than-things-he-experienced, ugh I just love characters who don’t exactly connect with humanity, weapons who weren’t meant to think.
Is that not how Memories work? That’s how my memories work…

Shame that there isn’t a like button on this site, I’d totally give you one.
Honestly one of my favourite poems so far (maybe casue its a bit longer who knows)
Everytime Tess is on screen my life gets better
My life would indeed improve if Tess burst through my door with snacks.
Oh ok, so Kendal doesn’t need a boat, he can just walk. Neat.
Does… does he know how to use the bathroom?
I wish I could like comments in this page
The real question is: does he ever NEED to use the bathroom?
I mean he has been shown eating before, even if he doesn’t eat as much as a mortal, and while obviously that will fuel his body there’s going to be some waste from it, which he’ll need to expel.

I agree with that. I believe that since he’s eating stars, all the matter gets assimilated since they are made of basically only energy.
Isn’t a big thing about the chimeras is that they can’t eat because they have no void consumption in them? Kendal also lacks void in his body. He genuinely might be incapable of eating and breathing.

Unless They have a 100% efficient body that breaks down every single part of the food, leaving no waste to be discarded.
Don’t need to breathe, huh…
I’m sure that’s not about to become very relevant in this arc!
Foreshadowing is a literary device-
Thank you, miss Granger.
I’m sure it has NOTHING to do with the dangerous, experimental boat that they’re about to cross an ocean in!
Nothing like a sudden Tess to diffuse the tension and change the topic!
oh that comment about kendal holding his breath isn’t gonna be important *at all* with this upcoming experimental water-going vessel plot.
Wow. He doesn’t need to breathe? Just what is he made of? Does the star metal give him some kind of longevity, is he still part divine as the former body of a god, or can he just hold his breath for a really long time? He’s kind of like a baby except he needs to be told how to do body functions???

The more I see of Tess, the more I want to play DND with her! Just imagine the shenanigans!
Oh gosh, you’re so right tho
YES
Or a Chronicles of Darkness multi splat, or Scion.
No one appreciates the snacks.
“We should see how long he can stay underwater!”
No, we shouldn’t! We really, really shouldn’t!
Technically, anyone can stay underwater forever. Unless they bob to the surface like a cork, or disintegrate, or explode.
Only in the loosest sense, since most everyone would have their bodies dissolve eventually from being submerged in water for so long.
Hold up, Kendal doesn’t even need to EAT?? or BREATHE!!???? This man is a freak of nature and i am SO HERE FOR IT
I’m getting the feeling we’ll get to test the underwater thing sooner rather than later…
Whaaa?? He doesn’t need to breath?!?!??
Why is it only *now* that I am reminded of NinjaGo’s Zane? There’s honestly quite a bit in common!
OHMYGOSH. How did I not see that?!
Also, we need to give Falst more cookies he looks so happy eating it. 🥰
if you give a Falst a cookie…
Holy heck, I see it! They’re both bodies created, have weird memory stuff(at least to start) and there’s a sort-of blue motif.
This seals the deal, but yes at least a few saw what you saw (myself among them).
i love tess barging in with snacks at the worst possible time, with half the party still missing and the remaining two in the midst of Having A Normal One.
also the way falst was eating that bun. he’s not escaping the catboy allegations.
That’s very observant of you, Dainix!
I bet that would come in handy if we get to Space Aurora (TM).
Now I’m just imagining Dainix in the cell with kendal and suddenly realising that he’s not fucking breathing.
There are two kinds of people
“Ridiculously convenient!”
I just love that reaction. Ah Tess, never change.
Also, this is my first time commenting on Aurora, so … Hi!
Hello, greetings, salutations, and well wishes Ursa Minor. Welcome to the comments and conversation.
Kendal is neither fully divine nor human but has aspects of both. What an interesting child! Vash and Primordial Life have touched his essence, What could that bring about?
Tess be like “FALST HOLY FUCK”
Wait. Why is it dark outside?
Daylight savings time
That door doesn’t lead outside, it leads to another part of the house.
Gods I love Tess! Her last comment made me laugh out loud.
God, I love Tess. That last comment made me chuckle.
“Is he dead?”
“No, just sleeping.”
“…he’s not breathing—”
“DID I STUTTER”
“Watch out, poison gas!”
Kendal: I’m about to ruin this man’s whole career.
I LOVE that meme- just imagining Kendal with Mark Rober’s voice 🤣
Falst looks so precious in the 8th panel omg
Tess, I love you <3
And of course, Dainix being observant as always!
… Oh OF COURSE the Void element is consumption, and Kendal has very little/no Void element in him! Breathing is a form of consumption!
Which does make me wonder about how Cave Corruption might effect breathing as well as hunger, but I digress
Reread 1-22-37. Right before Falst uses light magic, he hears a voice tell him, “There’s breath in your body, so spend it on something!”
Kendal doesn’t have to eat because there’s no void in him. But he doesn’t have to breathe because there’s no LIGHT in him either!
I love this squad so much.
And on a side note
Alinua: We are NOT trying that!
Erin: Except under strictly controlled circumstances!
Huh, I wonder if Kendal not needing to breath may be relevant during the coming Boat Arc! Sure is interesting that Kendal may be able to stay underwater for a very long time and also we’re about to go on a boat!

oh hey it’s that thing Red was talking about on her Tumblr(about how she’d love to do this animated but that would just be. way too much work(yes i know the title text mentioned that))

I’m sure this will not become relevant in their fast approaching seafaring adventure.

And sushi
Tess’s “I grew up with Erin” side is showing; Erin’s all “For science!”, and Tess is “Bet you I can eat all these fudge stripes.”
I’m sure at no point will it be necessary for Kendal to demonstrate how long he can remain underwater.

Spirits! I love these three.
this has the same vibes as the reveal that aspen is colorblind
I mean, let’s be honest here. A god in this world for most of their existence are spirits, only taking physical form when meeting an important guest, give instructions or to fight. I MISSED YOU
Ooo hey, a Chekov’s lore drop.

And yes, this detail seems like it could be highly relevant for ocean arc shenanigans, along with Tahraim’s assertion that soulfire can burn at the bottom of the ocean. Hmm.
My sister learned how to make that during a trip to china and every few months we make a massive batch and freeze them for easy breakfasts.
I want more of this trio
He’s a semi-aerobic, two-legged man of action…
love this btw
I’m sorry, he doesn’t BREATH??!
i love gods/godlike beings not breathing. it’s such a little subtle detail about someone, yet so deeply unnerving. how long would it take you to notice if someone you were around wasn’t breathing? you might feel unsettled for some reason, or maybe even like they were eerily still (if they weren’t the type of person to constantly move around, like Kendal is), but i think it would take a while for you to realize *why*.
NOOOOO I HAVEN’T READ IT IN LIKE A MONTH HOW DID I READ EVERYTHING SO FAAAAAST NOOOO
For all those wondering we HAVE indeed seen Kendal eat something before.
I give you page 1.4.24
I love Tess. She is amazing.
She is someone you would want as a best friend
This feels like a Chekhov’s gun and honestly I’m excited to see it fire
Foreshadowing is a literary device-
DOES Kendal need food? He has no Void after all.
Now THAT is how you exposition! Right before it becomes relevant, too! (cuz seafaring arc)
he might be absorbing air through his skin like a frog
