Alt-text: check in with your doctor regularly to catch problems (broken arm) before they compound (getting more broken by a robot octopus wasp)
Metal tears before the claws, a tentacle
Snaps round, crushes Falst’s arm, pulls him free.
His scream wakes Dainix as the monster twitches,
And turns to carry Falst away.
There’s an “I sleep, real sh*t” meme potential in panel 4 somewhere.
Alinua might have been busy, but Falst was too angry at Erin for prioritising Dainix’s void immunity over Kendal to ask for healing; now he’s paying for it, painfully. @ImuyanMangoCat Is right about the speech bubble; my guess it’s to emphasise the volume and/or pain that it literally breaks through any outlines.
The robot is still treating Falst as something to protect and Dainix has recovered from the stun blast, that’s good. Now, what will Dainix do? Run back to camp for help? Attack the automaton from behind? Let out a fire flare to alert the camp of danger perhaps?
Dainix, getting injured: “I sleep.”
Dainix, knowing someone else is getting injured: “REAL SH*T”
I think Falst is just angry at Erin, period. Perpetually. Falst has endured squalid conditions for what seems to be a not-insignificant portion of his life, and suddenly he’s traveling with this bigshot upper-class mage who takes the group to a hostile city and, from Falst’s perspective, seemingly prioritizes pragmatism over literally everything else, including the well-being of Falst and his new friends. Falst and Erin do not see eye to eye, and I have a feeling that will continue to be the case for a while.
I said a few pages ago that I think that Falst would rather die than ask Erin for help and I think that’s just a good summary for their relationship overall.
(Also this is the first reply I’ve ever been able to do! Yay!)
Ah. I just realized why Falst has such a large kintsugi scar on his arm in the chapter cover.
Where is the robot even going? Anywhere that it was programmed to rendezvous at would be long destroyed. And it almost seems to be looking up a bit as it’s heading off; searching for a signal or magical energy signature, perhaps?
Dainix: WOW, would you look at that, it’s almost like if you’re injured you should GET IT HEALED BEFORE SOMETHING HAPPENS TO MAKE IT WORSE
Falst: STOP GLOATING AND HELP ME
Quite honestly I don’t have anything important to say because my brain feels so microwaved today. But. Oh gosh Falst’s position in panel 5 what a dramatic icon. my catboy boutta get damseled go get him back Dainix
Yesss I have others calling Dainix Labrador!!! My empire shall rise!!!
Also this is like the first time I’ve ever done this reply to a comment thing so hopefully this works.
If this automaton is trying to “protect” Falst it’s being rather rough with him. Mostly likely it’s because it’s malfunctioning but it does raise the possibility that Ancient society was more violently oppressive than we’d assumed, especially considering the automaton seems programmed to register all “cave-people” as threats.
My god so much is going on. We have some backstory and sibling bonding, angst with Kendal and Anilua, and now Flast has been damsel on distress-ified. How is the crew going to keep up?!!
Faslt reminds me of a desperate comic from ‘Jumanji’ trying to figure out what to do with a totally new problem (though Falst is more accustomed such problems) in 1.19.26 (Robin Williams and Kevin Hart are both good examples). I imagine Falt would be loudly unhappy with Dainix when (not if- given proof by Dainix’s dogged loyalty) starts to help in Falst’s current predicament. But that’s only my guess.
But this is Red’s story to tell us.
Something I find interesting about Erin and Falst’s views of Dainix is the difference in what they’re focusing on. Erin sees Kendal recognize Dainix and just accepts that Kendal made a friend and that he happens to be void immune. Meanwhile Falst has zeroed in on Dainix admitting that he hurt Kendal in the arena and that his fire form went on an uncontrolled rampage. Neither of them are strictly wrong it’s mostly just a matter of perspective.
@confusedqueer my guess is that the robot is chalking it up to fear/confusion/fight response, and is prioritizing getting him away from the “actual” threat over short-term roughness
Aurora Question #11: Oooh replies this is useful
Wait what do you mean I need a question?
Uhhh On a scale of 1-10, how much would getting your arm broken by a robot octopus wasp hurt?
Let’s see. 10/10 is so much pain you pass out solely from the pain alone, and panel 5 Falst may have succumbed to that. On the low end, the volume and quality (based on font size and shape of bubble) of that scream indicates it’s probably at least 8/10.
We can also attempt to apply the PINAID scale (five factors, each ranging from 0-2). The scream gives us 2, facial expression (distorted grimace) another 2, body language (clenched) 2 more. I’m also going to say it’s unlikely he could be consoled or distracted from the pain by voice or touch, so that’s another 2. Breathing pattern is difficult to discern from still images, so that could be anywhere from 0 to 2 more. So, again, 8 to 10/10.
IRL, broken bones hurt especially if the broken ends are grinding against each other. Also, bone pain is not merely severe, but also a different type of pain than most other pains, so intensity is possibly exacerbated in people who’ve never experienced it before. (I have no personal experience with this.)
If we want to try to compare with other types of severe pain, natural childbirth is typically considered to be ~8/10, and kidney stones ~9/10 (with some variability based on the size and shape of the stone). (I’ve never experienced those, either.) So, is this pain less, about the same, or worse than a kidney stone? I have no way of knowing.
Falst valiantly tries to depower the robot in an extraordinary display of strength, but, oh no! Is that the robot making a comeback? Yes indeed it is, dear viewers! The robot has seized Falst! Ow… that looked painful! Hang on, Dainix is up! Yes folks, it appears that everyone’s favourite crucible is still going strong! Ah, but back across the field Falst appears to be unconscious! The robot seems to be the victor! Will Dainix be able to step in and save his new ferin companion? Find out next time on Aurora!
Yeah idk I thought it would be funny to narrate this page like a sports commentator. I might make more. I don’t know what I’d call it if I made it a thing though.

My mind, upon seeing that replies are possible for the first time since June of last year: *conjures an image of the Return of the King title card*
Bye Falst!(but seriously Red,please return Falst,he need him)
It’s a bit of a fixer upper this robot, but still perfectly functional.
Dainix what are you waiting for? Special requast? GO SAVE HIM!
Falst literally just said he didn’t need protecting. Which means he doesn’t need rescuing, either, even though an intrusive busy-body might think so.
OH OHOH OHOH. GOD THAT LOOKs. PAINFUL. OW MY BONES. RED YOU LIED TO ME THAT IS NO T A HUG
Legit thought Faulst’s arm was his leg and the robot was grabbing those *luscious cheeks*
Don’t ask how
I guess Falst had a weak point too, and I hope it glowed in robot-vision.
Also Dainix’s glow eye was weirdly hilarious
Will the Labrador:
A) chase the kitty
B) run away to the people in fright
Either way it’s a very Labrador thing to do.
Been there. Ain’t fun. Setting a bone hurts like hell
Correct me if i’m mistaken, but I think thats the first time Red’s used that style of speech bubble, no outline, just pure white spikes.
I think something similar was used when Alinua screamed after getting struck by the Void Dragon during the Tynan fight.
Red you’ve got a strange definition of “hug”
His efforts in vain, in agony he wails
It gently lifts him, his injured arm flails
Metal tears before the claws, a tentacle
Snaps round, crushes Falst’s arm, pulls him free.
His scream wakes Dainix as the monster twitches,
And turns to carry Falst away.
Welp he got damseled
Rut roh looks like the collector is gonna get some new test subjects

now;
thanks

Falst: STOP GLOATING AND HELP ME
To quote a shouted question to Marten [from ‘Questionable Content’ web-strip from years & years back]: “Run – Fight – or item?!’

I was sooo confused about people calling Dainix Labrador at first, but I think its perfectly fitting!

Okay lets see what we have. Sword, then storm, then robot. Whelp looks like red is just recreating scythe.
Ooh, if Dainix doesn’t keep his emotions under control, there’s a good chance that the robot’s metal body will burn Falst.
My god so much is going on. We have some backstory and sibling bonding, angst with Kendal and Anilua, and now Flast has been damsel on distress-ified. How is the crew going to keep up?!!

Is our poor angst monkey boi getting damseled? Awww
Excellent! I love rescue missions to save the lancer.

Dainix really went: *twing!*
Exactly!
Those are the worst arm bones to break. RIP that arm for a bit.
Yup, been there, aint fun.
Comment replies are working again! Thanks, Red!
It’s funny because Falst said he didn’t need to be protected, and now both the robot and Dainix are gonna fight over who gets to protect Falst.
Look, I like to cuddle my kitty too, but there’s a right way and a wrong way to pick up a cat.
“oh no! my hubris!” – falst, probably
Aurora Question #11: Oooh replies this is useful

Uhhh On a scale of 1-10, how much would getting your arm broken by a robot octopus wasp hurt?
2- it’s a minor injury at best, walk it off champ, it’ll heal
100. I got my arm broken by a horse and it hurts like shit.
Clearly it would be a 1337

the little flash in Dainix’s eye is everything
he about to do some teammate rescuing
Why can’t I reply? Screen just goes blank 🙁
Testing whether it’s working for me.
Hm…mayhaps that glowy eye portends an unleashing of magic fires…?
You KIDNAP Falst?? You carry him off like the damsel!? Oh! Oh! No lacrima for robot!! No lacrima for robot for One Thousand Years!!
Real question is if Danix will go flammy again.
@Question Master
Yes
*Yes is my answer
@Question Master:
Never broken a bone before so I can’t say but I reckon it’d be 10
Yeah, Imma gonna need a translation key for RedBot ASAP, please? Someone? Anyone?
