I decided that Dainix was a Labrador on the page where he hugged Erin because he was radiating happy labrador energy and also his sad eyes have such a Labrador vibe (let me tell you, whenever they’re not playing they look depressed) and just the fact that Falst obviously didn’t want him getting too close and Dainix decided it would be a brilliant idea to get too close.
Yes I own a Lab and yes he’s adorable and cuddly and Dainix’s spirit animal.
Amongst all the amazing SFX of this page, I love that little “pop” in the final panel.
Art wise, the lightning here looks pretty different from regular elemental lightning; more stringy, less white, and those red swirls are coming from it, not Dainix. A mix of lightning and fire to produce a stun blast?
So, Falst realises there must be something powering the automaton. Maybe he’s encountered them before, maybe common knowledge of Ancient tech and God sentinels mean he could deduce that, or maybe he’s been reading some more of Erin’s books off-panel.
And here I thought Falst’s usefulness in a direct fight with the automaton would be limited. Oh, how wrong I was. Sharp claws and wiry strength can definitely cut into its rusty metal shell; the arms may be a problem though.
Prediction for next week: I don’t think Falst will be able to disable it on his own; he might have a grip on the power source, but I don’t think he can wrench it out before the automaton acts. The question is whether the automaton will recognise this act of violence and reassess its perception of Falst as something to protect.

In all honesty I don’t do shipping with this comic, unless it’s either canon or, like the above, a bit of background fun. Red isn’t making it a priority and I respect and appreciate that. If I were to be pressured to ship amongst the main cast, I’d go for Erin X Falst, but only if their dynamic evolves beyond their current Hubris-Snark dynamic. Unless that happens it’s an odd friendship, period.
I was right a few pages ago; based on panel 5, the exposed bits are wires, and judging from the glow, they’re some kind of optic cable for magical energy, likely soul energy as LilacSpiral had pointed out. And if that’s soul energy in the cables… I don’t think Falst is ripping out the power source here, only the weapon core.
Okay; the *wham* sound effect isn’t red and cracked, so I don’t think any of Dainix’s bones are broken. Though that begs a question: if any of his bones are broken, would transforming into soulfire and back heal them, or leave the damage as it was before? I lean towards the latter, since his first transformation didn’t restore his damaged eye.

Erin and June because I think they could have a lot to teach one another but are also surprisingly able to see where the other is coming from as they both come from magic societies where knowledge is prioritized.
Falst and Dainix because as we saw they understand one another and once that trust is there I think it would be awesome. Also, when Dainix gave Falst his fire proof poncho and prioritized his safety during that fight, something Falst certainly isn’t used to coming from the background that he does, OMG how can you not ship them?
Alinua and Kendal: because I think they are the party members that care about each other the most, and have taught each other the most. They just need to learn how to care about themselves individually a bit more because at this point it is a little codependent.

I’m a fan of Alinua and June. I know they haven’t actually had any screen time together, but I think they could be cute. Unless I’m totally wrong on personality, Alinua seems like, even though she hasn’t gone to school/isn’t your standard book smart person, she still has a lot of working knowledge, especially in plants, and seems really overall intelligent and curious. So that, combined with June’s books smarts and massive library makes them work together because of the curious/knowledgeable dynamic. Or maybe I just like academic relationships.

I feel like there’s so much they could learn from each other since they’re so different in terms of background, power, privilege, etc. I’m just excited in general to see how their relationship develops, even if that doesn’t develop into romance.
Also, I think it’s a bit of that good old “enemies to lovers” spiciness, even if it’s “Friends who disagree often due to contrasting worldviews and priorities to lovers”. I like that.
We’ve seen how they interact now but I think they are more similar too each other than they think. They aleady have a great dynamic, and once they trust each other I can easily see their relationship become something more. Also the scene in a previous chapter where Dainix gives Falst his anti-fire pncho is cute

I sincerely hope that there will be no romantic subplot. That’s one of the reasons I love this comic. Aside from the plot, the characters, the art style etc, I’m just happy to have found a story where the characters don’t need to fall in love just because they’re around each other for a while. The fact that it’s seen as mandatory for a story to include a romantic subplot, and if there is no subplot the fans will invent one, always annoyed and confused me. Nothing against people who ship, or the concept of shipping for that matter, but I just want these characters to remain friends.
When one gets this used to mentally checking out for a portion of the story because one can’t relate to the characters anymore, it’s an almost unprecedented experience to not have to do that. So please don’t make me.

@OngoingConversationCouplet Same, regarding ships. It’s also one of my favourite things about this comic is that so far there’s no canon relationships among the protagonists (as of yet, but that might change). Not everything has to have romance.
Also, to continue from my previous comment: I’m not aro (I am grey ace though) but I don’t see romantic relationships as being necessary in anything, whether that’s in real life or a fantasy comic about a bunch of fictional people with fabulous hair.

My favorite ship is Erin × June – while unlikely, I think they could be really cute, and as I’m partial to the “Erin does a heroic sacrifice then joins the Paladins” theory they could be really cute together. Also June showed genuine concern when Erin left the archive abruptly in a rush.
My least favorite ship is Alinua × Kendal – while both in my no goes zone, I hate when the leading lady gets with the leading man, kendal is AroAce also, and Alinua is like 20 more years older then Kendal and that’s weird, they are also just a bland duo, as they aren’t really good at playing off eachother and don’t have a good romantic dynamic, they are able to be perfectly good friends and are nice together, but their dynamic doesn’t extend to more then just friends. Though I will say I like memes about Kendal friendzoning Alinua and being totally oblivious to her hints as girls are complex and weird and Kendal is a month old, those are funny. But then again, memes and jokes play by no rules when it comes to shipping.

@OngoingConversationCouplet Same, regarding ships. It’s also one of my favourite things about this comic is that so far there’s no canon relationships among the protagonists (as of yet, but that might change). Not everything has to have romance.
Also, to continue from my previous comment: I’m not aro (I am grey ace though) but I don’t see romantic relationships as being necessary in anything, whether that’s in real life or a fantasy comic about a bunch of fictional people with fabulous hair.

When it comes to shipping, I have categories
These are the people I don’t put in serious ships (joke/meme ships are a no rules zone, I call em Crack ships) with explanations
Kendal – he’s like a month old and canonically AroAce
Alinua – she lived alone for to long to understand romance norms and she’s closet the kendal who is AroAce, plu s I never like it when leading ladies get in a romantic subplot, the plot focuses to much on it
Tess – she’s badass enough on her own and don’t need no man
Vash – what character in the story is on a divine standard
The Collector – while I am partial to a Collector reformation, that doesn’t need a romantic subplot to be compelling
VD – he’s the token pure evil villain, he doesn’t have time for love
Life primordial – she’s too busy to medal in love
Michael (Light Dragons champion) – he has to much on his plate

My favorite ship is Erin × June – while unlikely, I think they could be really cute, and as I’m partial to the “Erin does a heroic sacrifice then joins the Paladins” theory they could be really cute together. Also June showed genuine concern when Erin left the archive abruptly in a rush.
My least favorite ship is Alinua × Kendal – while both in my no goes zone, I hate when the leading lady gets with the leading man, kendal is AroAce also, and Alinua is like 20 more years older then Kendal and that’s weird, they are also just a bland duo, as they aren’t really good at playing off eachother and don’t have a good romantic dynamic, they are able to be perfectly good friends and are nice together, but their dynamic doesn’t extend to more then just friends. Though I will say I like memes about Kendal friendzoning Alinua and being totally oblivious to her hints as girls are complex and weird and Kendal is a month old, those are funny. But then again, memes and jokes play by no rules when it comes to shipping.
