Kendal… I get what you’re going for, but your friends have proven themselves time after time, more than capable of protecting themselves and each other. And if you’re afraid that mortals fighting gods might make those gods angry, you’d be right. But the effect would be all the more demoralising for Tynan; you’ll show everyone that he’s far weaker than even Vash made him out to be.
Plus, Erin is right. Alone, you almost died. Together, you’re kind of kicking his ass. Time for “Six Against Tynan” to unfold.
Kendal, you said it yourself, his power relies on terror.
It took a god to defeat him last time, now he’s getting his ass handed to him by ‘mere’ mortals.
Word of this gets out and he’ll never be feared again.
Honestly, I do see method in Kendal’s madness here, up to this point he could predict everything Tynan did, but adding mortals capable of hurting Tynan changes the parameters. I feel like the smartest version of this plan would be for Erin (and maybe Dainix, depending on exactly how his fire works. Can he shoot it over distance?) to be enacting his plan somewhere out of Tynan’s immediate line of sight, with Falst playing bodyguard to them. Then Tess and Alinua can link up with Kendal to join distraction detail.
It occurs to me, that if our heroes run, Tynan is going to murder everyone in the city below. He can’t even let a few escape to spread the fear of him. They’ve all seen that mortals can hurt Tynan, and know HOW mortals can do so. If that knowledge gets out, Tynan is DONE. His power broken, permanently. Erin has, whether he was aware or not when he cast that fire spell, escalated this fight to the point where neither side can back down.
In short, there are now no brakes on this train, and the throttle’s about to go to full open.
TL;DR: I’ve analyzed the situation through my very reliable lens and decided that you’re more likely to die even if you’re the reason I’m not dead yet. Scram.
Alone he wishes to fight, for Tynan
Would freely kill his friends,
“He won’t kill me until he proves his point,”
He says, refusing to be their end.
But Falst, the Ruunasers, Dainix and Alinua
To run from the fight refuse-
And divine-forged, divinely stubborn Kendal
Begrudgingly accepts their views.
Kendal is missing one point – Tynan getting hurt by mortals (equivalent to getting hit by rotten tomatoes by the audience?) can be way worse to his oh-so-great-self-image
Still waiting for some plot twist – that’s the right time for one
Kendal, the mortals you’re trying to protect are a Ferrin, a metal-caste lightning mage, the avatar of life, the maybe-avatar-of-fire, and the elemental magus. I don’t think they’re in as much danger as you worry
Okay, there’s so much I love about this fight, but I can’t get over the “great, the gang’s all here. Now we can die together!” energy and it’s making me cackle. You’re doing such a great job with this!
“You’re not supposed to fight back?” F*ck the rules, I say! Erin’s right, they’re winning! And Jorlem is right; if one group of mortals can defeat him, that means every group of mortals with access to fire magic can defeat him in the future. This is a chance like no other to stop this maniac, and anyone who wants to take it shouldn’t be barred from doing so!
Ryan:
I think the fact that he isn’t running, despite being a pragmatic, survival-oriented “badass normal” in the middle of a fight otherwise populated entirely by deadly superpowered individuals, really says a lot about just how much he cares for Kendal’s safety. Kendal was the first person in a long time to show Falst kindness and offer him a home; Falst is not going to forget that or leave Kendal thankless.
So, based on Kendal’s statement, I’m getting some Xykon (OOTS) vibes.
“Only two things matter: Force in s great concentration as you can manage, and style. And in a pinch, style can slide.”
Kendal seems to be worried that Tynan is going to nuke the area to spite them
To be fair, that’s exactly what the Collector did to Vash–she destroyed his city so he was no longer bound to it and she could kidnap him. And Kendal, being who and what he is, has a copy of Vash’s memories–which probably includes that fateful encounter, even though it’s probably been suppressed due to the trauma and the fact that Vash got yanked out of his incarnation soon after and as such it might not have fully processed. He’s also managed to inherit Vash’s protective nature (as evidenced by literally every misadventure so far, and especially those that have resulted in the expansion of the Floof Squad), and it wouldn’t surprise me if some of Vash’s perspective also rubbed off in him…
So yeah, even if he doesn’t remember why, he’s definitely got a legitimate reason to be worried, given that his “city” currently seems bound and determined to get itself killed.
I think you’ve just debunked your own argument there, Kendal. “If he proves to the world that I can’t [defeat him] he tells the world there’s no hope of stopping him.” Contrast that with: “His power depends on an image of invincibility… You’re not supposed to fight back. And you’ve actually hurt him.” If even mortals are capable of fighting back and hurting him, then you’ve eliminated the image of invincibility and undermined his power. Stop with your stupid hero complex where you think YOU alone have to be the one to save the world and actually listen to yourself, man!
on the one hand, Kendal’s got a bit of a hero complex– sure Tynan would LIKE to kill them all, but he’s kinda failing at that. And if they keep standing up to him, they’ll only weaken him further.
on the other hand, Kendal’s got the inherited knowledge of Tynan’s archnemesis– he might know something we don’t, about what Tynan is capable of when he stops playing around.
Yeah, Kendal, the problem is that Erin has figured out how to hurt Tynan, and a thousand people just saw it.
As you yourself said, Tynan depends on his image of invincibility. But now his weakpoint is known. Even if the others ran, Tynan kind of *has* to kill everyone in a three kilometer radius right now, because if this gets out, there are no words for how incredibly fucked he is. Sure, Erin is an uncommonly powerful mage, but nothing he’s done is anything a group of normal fire mages couldn’t manage working together.
Which of course, only means that… yeah, chances are Tynan is about to get extremely real extremely fast, because this fight just turned into an existential threat to him in a way not even Vash cleaving him in half ever was.
Well charismaquark (#comment-28700), Tynan was playing Mortal Kombat with Kendal, but now there are to many new players. A game of Twister Ultimate would accommodate everyone. Until everyone but Kendal is eliminated at 200+ mph.
On unrelated note, is Tess literally punching chunks off of Tynan? As in, one punch, one part gone thus forcing him to reincarnate? Because it seems he is unable to keep his sword in shape at all, it flows around her fist when she makes contact.
@youngstormlord
Possibly, possibly he was in the middle of reforming it. Who knows. If I had to guess, I’d say fighting his body won’t do much, based on the legend thing we heard in like chapter 12. I do like how they’re learning from history and barely focusing on his body at all.
@Jorlem
Yeah, that actually makes a lot of sense. I’m impressed.
Re-reading this, what I especially love is that the bottom left panel is such a hero shot of Kendal, Alinua, and Falst, and the next panel feels like Dainix fully stepped in front of Kendal’s camera to take all the drama for himself. I adore it.
Falst i think you of all people should get running though.
So to summarise, Tynan might stop being an idiot because he realises he is in trouble
I think everyone involved here needs a small lesson in the “trusting your friends” part of teamwork. Except Tess. She’s great.
Listen to me, Flameo Hotman, you better not be thinking of sacrificing yourself, you hear me?
Kendal: you guys should run I think he’s about to have his third act breakdown
THIS EXACTLY
@bush guardian But will Kendel also smarten up?
kendal just TRY and get Tess away from Tynan right now, she’s having a world-of-cardboard-speech moment and loving it
kendall, they’re not letting you be all “oh to sacrifice myself”, so deal with it

Everyone having a heart to heart and Tess is just in the background playing whackamole with the arc villain
Erin: Poncho Fireman may have a point.

I mean, Tynan’s image, not Kendal
Well Tynan is there and does want to cause Kendall’s death so Dainix was wrong. HA!
Kendal, the mortals you’re trying to protect are a Ferrin, a metal-caste lightning mage, the avatar of life, the maybe-avatar-of-fire, and the elemental magus. I don’t think they’re in as much danger as you worry

Shut up and accept the Power of Friendship, baka.
I mean, we are only five pages into this chapter. Something’s probably going to go wrong.
@Konnash
I don’t think Kendal cares about smearing Tynan’s image. He just doesn’t want his friends to get smeared over the cobblestone.
Damn does Dainix need a girlfriend? coz I’m free
@I is she, the HalfNormie_ He’s gay but also fictional
Dunno what Vash is so worried about. Everyone’s having so much fun!
(Or at least, Tess certainly is)
“You’re not supposed to fight back?” F*ck the rules, I say! Erin’s right, they’re winning! alt text: kendal, tearfully holding an armful of puppies: I can’t protect them………
@Luña i understood that reference 🙂
Kendal: “You have to go.”
also Kendal: *holding Alinua close to him in panel one*

@Bill Erak: yay, somebody who gets it!
On unrelated note, is Tess literally punching chunks off of Tynan? As in, one punch, one part gone thus forcing him to reincarnate? Because it seems he is unable to keep his sword in shape at all, it flows around her fist when she makes contact.
If so, one word: Badass!
@youngstormlord

Yeah, that actually makes a lot of sense. I’m impressed.
I just noticed that everyone’s eyes are glowing. Even falst, who had no magic. Interesting.
Now the REAL fight begins
Kendal puts his hand in the fluffy cloud elf hair for emotional support
I could feel something was deeply, truely, wrong. And then, I realized. HelloHaiku has not yet commented on this page…
Luña and veggiesnake:
Kendal be like: “Can everyone just chill for two seconds before something crazy happens again?!”
Uno Reverse to your “Couldn’t deal with you getting hurt” play! Take that!
Ohhhh, we’re about to enter the second stage of the boss battle, alright.
Re-reading this, what I especially love is that the bottom left panel is such a hero shot of Kendal, Alinua, and Falst, and the next panel feels like Dainix fully stepped in front of Kendal’s camera to take all the drama for himself. I adore it.
Except Tynan. I’m pretty sure Tynan want to be the reason you die.
