I lied in the alt text a few pages ago, THIS is actually the part I internally called “the kaiju fight”
FLAME ON
OOOOOOHHHH!! Dainix vs. Erin fight! Or perhaps Crucible vs. Void Dragon vs. Light Dragon threeway fight!!!!!!
Wyrmsilk? Interesting. Assuming it’s wyrm as in the kind of dragon, does this mean dragons produce silk?
NOOOO! I’ve been forgetting to read alt-text for months now
This is not where I thought this was going at all!
dainix you angsty hotboi
@Bush Guardian
There’s a species of dragon living in the Rauan desert (where Dainix is from) that produces this silk.
Falst explains the sitch.
Kendal and Ali are next…
Dainix has a plan.
That tiny Alinua in panel 3 tho
Dainix back at it again with the casual suicidality
Dainix my boy don’t you DARE go sacrificing yourself you JUST did fire therapy we TALKED about this
Also, Crucible vs Void Dragon! FIGHT!
And thus the dragon of void did battle with the petty tyrant who sought to leech off of his terror. Below the remnant, the host, the ferrin and the metal caste watched on, powerless to stop the calamity. But still he stood, wreathed in the fire of his soul, one being stepped forward in an attempt to halt the rage of the dragons.
“Shake it off you useless-” WHOA! I’d ask Faulst if wants to talk about anything, but I know he’d tell me to piss off!
Also, a flowy piece of cloth that is fireproof! I see that Inuyasha parrell Red!
I’m pretty sure he’s talking Erin
FINALLY Dainix gets some proper action!
Also noting the cracks on his skin are coming back. Mah Boi is *pissed*!
Falst: My friend Erin is being might-controlled. He will probably hurt my other friends.
Dainix: Well, I am friend with one of those friends and I can’t allow that! Dumbar’s number!
Falst: Wait what?
Dainix: Monkeysphere, my dude. Your friend Kendal is in my monkeysphere but your friend Erin is not. They are both in your monkeysphere, which makes this hard for you.
Falst:
I don’t know why I give surfer bro accent to Dainix. I just do.
mind-controlled*
Typo in every comment…
Dainix cries, “What do you mean, “not Erin?””
And Falst quickly explains
About the Void Dragon, that Kendal and Alinua
Could face, if not for their pains.
Then Dainix quietly explains that they
will be the Dragon’s next kill.
“That makes this easier.” He gives his fireproof cloak.
Bright flames his body fill.
I have put this on AO3, click my name to go to it if you want.
We better see Falst in a poncho
Falst explains, the Floofs are out cold
Dainix has a plan for the Dragon so old
Yes, Kendal and Alinua shall henceforth be called ”The Floofs” because they serie the first floofy things in this comic
DON’T YOU DARE SACRIFICE YOURSELF FIREBOIA
hmm, soulfire vs void? not sure how effective that will be, but maybe V.D will learn to be afraid of yet another floofy boi. another issue i see with this plan is Tess; i’m not sure how kindly she’ll take to Dainix attacking her brother (if that IS his plan)
Kaiju fight… is Dainnix also gonna turn into a dragon?!
I ship these two!
FLAMEO, HOTMAN!
Considering the chapter cover has Dainix looking up at a dragon silhouette with lightning shooting out the eyes, I see a distinct possibility of things going pear-shaped within a few pages; either Tynan somehow escapes and subdues The Void Dragon, or The Void Dragon possesses Tynan’s incarnation.
It’s interesting to see a member of the group consider tactical possibilities in a fight, considering none of the others have experience with fighting in a team. It’s also interesting (read: exciting) to see Dainix ready to kick some omnicidal ass.
Gotta wrap up the new homies before your fiery suicide missions.
Just… just a scrap of self-preservation. From anyone on the squad… please.
@TheUnknownGame perhaps Dainix is reevaluating the biggest threat. he might attack Erin so that V.D stops dissolving Tynan, giving Tynan a chance to fight back. this would be wildly irresponsible, and both dragons could wreak untold havoc, but it would give Alinua and Kendal more time to heal
Interesting – in this page and the last one it hasn’t been raining. Maybe the fact that Tynan’s incarnation is being wrecked is also affecting the storm itself?
TL;DR: Gonna probably do a heroic sacrifice, take this just in case.
Falst the Fox-boy tells the fire-boy
“He’s being controlled by the big bad.”
Dainix assesses the danger dire
Of Kendal his friend and kindly cellmate
And of Alinua his acquired ally.
“That makes this easier.” He makes his move,
Nor fears to face the fearsome void.
With his soul of fire he strides to strive
To protect and defend his dear ones from death
Alone.
I thought this page was too epic to be captured by a silly little limerick, so instead I wrote a bit of Old English alliterative verse. Old English meter has four stressed syllables per line (two per half line) and at least two of those stressed syllables have to be alliterated. There are no rhymes, because rhyming poetry wasn’t a thing yet in ancient England, so it doesn’t look like poetry at first, but I find that it has a wonderfully epic sound to it when read out loud. Also, it’s the meter that Beowulf was written in, so that in itself makes it cool.
Oh, shoot, the space between each half line didn’t translate. Ugh. I’ll figure out a different way to do it next time.
i’ve been trying to keep up counters for things but I think I lost count of HOW many times the tides turned in this fight. when Red said it was like a superhero vibe I think I didn’t clock it at the time but that’s definitely how this feels and i love it so much
hey! there are no more rain effects! tynan is straight up getting EATEN by walter
falst’s expression in panel 5 – AAH! dainix didn’t even need him to give a verbal answer to his question, his face said it all. he and alinua both have very expressive ears and just! this is the start of falst’s emotional expression arc isn’t it.
POSSESSION FIGHT! POSSESSION FIGHT! POSSESSION FIGHT!
Oh, I get it now. Firestorm. That’s why this chapter was named firestorm.
Don’t mind my half-formed réalisation.
Oh, Falst’s sad eyes in panel 5 makes my heart hurt. Also Dainix has known these people for a few hours at most and he is already about to heroic sacrifice himself for them
“TL;DR: Gonna probably do a heroic sacrifice, take this just in case.”

Being a jock does not preclude also being a nerd, or a punk, both Arnold and the Rock are wicked smart

falst’s face has this weird phenomenom of looking a different age based on what expression he currently has. when he’s angry, or sarcastic, or determined, he looks closer to 17, but when he’s sad, or shocked, or happy, he looks closer to 13. it’s interesting because none of the other characters do this.
Way to ratchet up the tension Red!
@Called by Magic Thank you for insight to Old English verse. I read Beuwulf when I was in my 30s. After reading the “modern” translation I went back to original text (in modern print text format) to try get a sense of original sound/rhythm (which was printed on the left pages with modern translation on right page. I only got one third of the way through before giving up, To show the couplet break you could use ‘/’ key, Example: “Falst the Fox boy/ tells the fire-boy ‘He’s being controlled/ by the big bad.'” But use or ignore as you see fit.
alt text: things are really…………. heating up
Dainix: Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go explode in his general vicinity.
Falst: I don’t see how this’ll help!
Also, where is Tess? Dainix and Falst are talking, Erin’s being possessed, and Kendal and Alinua are seen to be down for the count, but I don’t see Tess anywhere. Is she sprawled on the ground somewhere else? Is she preparing to fight this new threat, unsure of what it is? Is she staring in disbelief? Where is she?
I’ve got a sneaking suspicion Dainix could die subduing Erin here. There’s several characters here who could become main ‘party’ members, and this could be a way of getting rid of one of them.
Dainix’s speech bubbles are cracking! I repeat, Dainix’s Speech Bubbles Are Cracking!
Falst, in spite of being handed the exposition ball, with a broken arm and after a very long, sleep-powder infused day no less, to describe something he’s never actually seen before, is doing a pretty good job.
V.D. is actually looking like he’s having a good time right now, slowly devouring this upstart while his opponents lie helpless and next on the menu. If V.D. can take over Tynan’s dragon form it’ll also provide a speedy route to the nearest cave entrance, and maybe spit some void stuff at Paladin HQ for good measure.
I think I get what Dainix means by “That makes this easier”; he’s going tap into the demon powers in an attempt to beat Voidy. He knows that if he goes full demon he might kill those around him by accident, but now he knows that if he doesn’t try, V.D. will kill those around him on purpose. He must do it if anyone here want’s to stand a chance at living.
Prediction for next week: Dainix will tap into his soulfire, now free of guilt thanks to Tahraim’s coaching, and manages to leave a lasting impression. Either he’ll defeat V.D. possessed Erin, or buy enough time for Alinua and Kendal to get back into the fray. Who knows? Maybe he’ll go full Alinua Vs. Sentinel and the fire-primordial/demon theory may yet turn out to be on the money.
To Creature Tamer:
Yeah, that’s kind of a trend with these guys…
Question of the Day:
In an AU where instead of elemental and void energy this situation calls for a rock-paper-scissors game, who wins?
Why does like half of this party have no sense of self-preservation? If they didn’t have each other dragging them back from the Cliffs of Martyrdom, the entire group would have self-destructed before the first arc wrapped up.
it has occured to me that dainix may be projecting his own guilt of hurting people he cares about onto erin and predicting how erin will react if he kills kendal and alinua while being controlled. i wonder if that’s what he’s refering to when he says that getting killed isn’t what he’s afraid of.
amazing visual effect I just noticed: Dainix’s hair and body, presumably damp from the storm, are steaming .
nooooo falst needs a hug and dainix another therapy session D:
I showed you that kaiju fight so I could show you this one
I thought the implication was that Dainix was gonna have to maybe kill Erin(he thinks). I really don’t want Dainix to die.
@ GreatWyrmGold, not half of them, all of them.
@Skye normally I would place my bets on VD Walter, but Erin will probably make him overthink it, letting Dainix win by playing scissors every time
OH BALLS
I know it’s been mentioned a couple times, but not enough people are talking about Falst’s expression in panel 5
it broke me
@Goldfinch – on the previous page Tess had let go of Tynan and hit the ground, hard. She and Kendal are both out.
What does Dainix think he can do? Strategically, the smart thing to do is to make sure Tynan can’t make any more trouble — then with him out of the picture, try to deal with Voidy.
Dainix is so outclassed here. What can soulfire do against the Void Dragon himself? He is going to need those Paladins.
Excellent. I’m enjoying the unpredictability immensely.
Just a whole crew of people without much of a sense of self preservation
I’d say out of the frying pan into the fire, but I think the proper analogy is that the fire is currently melting the pan and the contents are falling headlong into it.
I know this is only a little on topic but I just realized where the light dragon appears in the creation myth. They are the thing that removes the control of the sentient life from the void dragon. (in that very first scene from the start of the comic.) and since that part of the creation myth didn’t literally mold the world, the historians have no idea it even happened.
Dainix better not be attacking Erin, if Voidy was also partially enraged by Tynan hurting Erin, how’s he gonna react to Dainix doing it?
@icarusancalion one of the snippets from Erin’s trip to the paladin archive mentioned VD Walter getting a nasty surprise when he tried to possess some sort of beast made of fire. Given the parallels to Dainix’s “demon” situation, I’m thinking the fight might not be as one-sided as it initially appears
also can i just say i love panel 2? Red really captured the duality of puppet and puppeteer.
I’m really hoping for another “FINALLY!” in a few pages.
@Hermit Thrush, Red wouldn’t be calling it kaiju fight if it was one-sided.
oh i am SO hyped for not-Dainix vs. not-Erin fight!!!!
@Hermit Thrush – Now I have to re-read where Erin visits the archive. I don’t recall it anything about possessing a being off fire… or attempting to, hmmn.
No regard for the value of his own life! Dainix is already fitting in GREAT with the group!
@icarusancalion in the comic itself, it was just ancient text, but someone posted a translation in the comments
DON’T TELL ME HE’S THE FIRE ELEMENTAL!
Flameo, hotman.
@Hermit Thrush – Oh. I dug it up, with gratitude to you and the translator, Skalreth:

That sounds like the Void Dragon battling the Light Dragon, not that Voidy was having trouble with the element fire. I believe the Light Dragon’s element is soul, and the reason why it’s missed by the Aseran Academy is that it’s too pervasive. It’s right under their noses.
So it would be the fact that Dainix has soulfire that would be dangerous to Voidy.
What Is even happening I know that voidie Is killing tynan And the fire dude is going to attack him in the False is trying to stop him.
Someone please inform me more
a wee bit concerned that it was established earlier in this arc that falst heals very quickly and if his bones aren’t set immediately it can cause lasting damage, that his arm has seemingly been broken since alinua broke the prison, if not longer, and that alinua is currently way too busy being eaten by void magic to heal him. hope that doesn’t have any lasting consequences!
Falst is so smol I’m obsessed with him
Also now I’m conflicted over my comment a few pages ago – I’m not sure whether to ship Falst/Dainix or Falst/Erin lol
BTW do we have any established ship names for any of these?
Last panel Dainix: Time for… retribution!
(I’m not sorry)
