Comment didn’t load so I continued watching. It’s definitely him. At 0:43 he’s shown with a tail.
I like that Tess kept shooting at Tynan despite it being mostly ineffective and just very, very mildly distracting to him. Because she has to do something and by golly, she will do something!
also it’s a good thing that erin likes showing off how clever he is, because it makes perfect sense this way that he would explain every spell he casts so we can understand for sure what’s going on (or so that he can confirm what Mat translated from his runis circle, at least)
seriously though. the colours are the same.
also could the light dragon bestow the gift of being able to reproduce & the mage who crated the ferin was a light mage or somtink.
So I’m currently on a Trope Talk binge and while watching “Rule of Three” I’ve spotted the gang at 2:37. Dainnix is there, and so is Tess, but there’s a girl on the far left that does not resemble June at all.
Of course, Red may have rewritten the story since then, but I find it kinda sad that June might not join the floof gang.
Why I feel the need to point all this out, I have no idea.
@veggiesnake Uh, no. Erin didn’t know what Alinua was doing until the end of the page, nor does he do or say anything that implies that he considers what he’s done the most impressive feat of magic at present. Also, he’s Erin, he explains things like this regardless of whether or not he is showing off.
If he’s freezing the rain, he should get sleet, not snow. To get snow, he’d have to freeze (technically it’s called deposition) the water vapor directly to a solid form before it condenses into rain.
The bit about it “not sticking” doesn’t make a lot of sense, either. If it doesn’t stick at all, it’s melting as soon as it hits, and turning back into (the same quantity of) water. Though if it’s sticking in the surrounding highlands but not the valley, that could work; then only the precipitation that falls directly over the valley is available for flooding, with the rest remaining where it falls instead of rushing down into the valley.
Of course, then the evacuees are going to be climbing into a blizzard, with no preparation for such. And depending on how (and how quickly; remember the same mass of water is still falling) the snow piles up, he’s potentially introduced the risk of an avalanche (which, if conditions are right, can be triggered by a sudden loud noise . . . like, say, thunder). Were this a TTRPG, I could definitely see the GM having that gambit backfire on them.
I think wild birb might be right, but even if they aren’t and it’s the snow itself that won’t stick, snow falls a LOT slower than rain, so it would still help.
Lightdefender – I think what he’s saying “won’t stick” is the spell? As in, the snow spell won’t be permanent, but it will give them more time before the valley starts to flood.
Also, love when a party gets powerful enough that someone can say “A magical tree broke open an entire mountain!” and they can go “ah, that’s where our friend is” 🙂
@imuyanMangoCat
i saw both of those! i have a screenshot of the crew from “Rule of Three”, and my guess is it could be an earlier design for the Junior Archivist. in “Reformed Villains” i also saw a one- eyed- kinda- red- haired person who i think is an earlier design for Dainix with Falst, which made me want to see how they’d interact with each other. ive also seen both Falst and Kendal trying to get the V.D out of Erin in i think “Mind Control”, so i wonder if we’re going to see V.D again. (im realy happy someone pointed it out.)
so, what if the reason life won’t help alinua is because her power would overwhelm her? like with the collecter but worse because they’re in direct contact. alinua could be overwhelmed by the power because ali has massive power but significantly less power then life. ‘But miss stranger!’ i hear you cry, ‘then how did alinua do it the first time?’ that was because alinua had the lacrima at the time, therefore, with her own huge power mass, she probably scraped together enough power along with her own and life’s anger at jolon to transfer life’s consience to her body, or at least a giant plant lady version of life’s body life was technically using because she was controlling alinua. that’s a little too meta right now and this therory is already complicated so yeah, bye.
@ImuyanMangoCat unfortunately for June, i do believe that mysterious figure with the flowing hair is a distinct, as-yet-unseen character. she also appears in the last image in the Sketches page of the comic, standing next to Tess, so if she’s significant enough to be in the Floof Squad in a video and in a sketch, she’s probably sticking around. could she be June? i don’t think so. i imagine June will play a greater role alongside the Champion and the Lady, if anything. this new character strikes me as a water or wind mage type, or some other unique power
@Bluefire i just read the privacy policy, and for a moment i thought it was written about you just because it uses the term TL;DR, and i can’t separate you from that concept anymore, and i’m howling
Judging by panel three, that tree would be in Erin’s field of view, unless he was looking straight up the whole time he was performing that spell. So either he’s got a cramp in his neck, or he’s astoundingly unobservant, if he missed something as monumental as the latest “Alinua was here” marker. Or perhaps he couldn’t see it through the glowing of his spells?
I’ve noticed that Evil Tree hasn’t commented in a while. I wonder what happened to them?
Bluefire:
Tynan and the protagonists (besides Kendal), simultaneously: “Why do I hear boss music?”
My two cents on the “would turning it to snow help” debate: freezing the water will slow the rate of precipitation, even if it does melt on contact with the ground. This makes a big difference for flooding, flash floods in particular, since the ground doesn’t have to absorb all the rainwater at once anymore…
@Shadowedfaith (It was power of friendship, if you’re still wondering)
While turning rain to snow was probably a pretty good idea to deal with flooding (I think “not stick” might refer to the new layer of cold air, so opposed to the snow itself), I don’t think Erin has really considered the fact that like, half the cast is wearing short-sleeves, a tank-top or just a poncho (Dainix is probably not going to be having much fun lol).
@TheUnknownGame when we see Erin’s face for the first time in this page, his eyes are closed, so it’s possible that’s why he didn’t see the tree? (although I suppose that the sound of a mountain cracking open would probably be pretty noticeable either way)
Also going back through the previous pages you can see more and more of the rain turning into snow which is a cool detail.
Welcome to the party, Tess! These people don’t know hyperbole; if they say they’ll do something grand and seemingly exaggerated… they actually mean it.
@ImuyanMangoCat there’s also a trope talk (I don’t remember which one) where Red talks about her first OC, saying something to the effect of “She was quiet and had healing powers and cried a lot. She was a disgrace really.” And there’s a drawing very obviously of Alinua saying how no one’s proud of their first iteration or something like that.
@TheUnknownGame I’m currently on holiday and have spent all of this week in an internet free house. Now I’m on the second leg of my holiday in a different house with internet, so I’m back. Thanks for asking about me.
@Very Exited Funny you should say that as I’ve been forming a very similar theory in my head. The Ferin mage definitely had something to make their alterations stick, at first I thought it was a connection to void but now I’m thinking it was a rouge Paladin who combined their Paladin powers with Life magic to make chimerical alterations that persisted.
Why they did this I’m not sure. My best idea is to reduce the number and chance of Elemental Maguses, Ferin cannot be mages so if they targeted majority unaltered humans and they spread among other non-altered humans they would eventually reduce the rate of E.M.s or even cut them out entirely. Or maybe they were hoping to raise an army against V.D.; Ferin are a hardy people, are useless to V.D. to possess and might even possess the same void resistance Kendal displayed.
The artwork!!! It’s so good!!! I can’t wait to see what happens next! I have absolutely fallen in love with all of the characters so far. Thank you red, for this beautiful comic! Now that I got caught up on it, I am going to go study for my finals!
Gonna throw my own bit into the weather debate here, though I will preface this by saying I’m not a meteorologist:
Erin’s at first glance probably referring to the snow sticking, though if he’s not actively powering the snow spell then that’s not going to hang around, either, and as such he could be referring to that as well (unless he’s made it self-sustaining, but I don’t know if that’s possible). Someone mentioned that the spell should have resulted in sleet; it did in fact yield sleet as a transitional phase between rain and snow–if you’ve lived in the north, you’ve probably seen this in late fall and early spring, so the end result isn’t that unrealistic here. And while you get a lot of snow out of a small amount of water due to its expansion as it freezes–and hence there’s the potential for quite a bit of snow to fall here–it’s probably preferable to have it come down as snow and melt into the ground gradually, as opposed to coming down all at once as rain that will roll off in a flash flood. At the very least, it gives the ground time to try and absorb what’s already fallen before piling on too much more. Mot entirely sure what this does to the potential for large hail, though.
As for people not checking in, I wouldn’t necessarily be too concerned yet–it’s quite possible they’ve got exams coming up or end-of-term projects and papers to finish, or they might be under the weather, or it could be that they just don’t feel like posting today for some reason. It could even be they’re testing out a new name and didn’t want to draw attention to it until they’ve decided. I’m sure they appreciate the concern, though.
To the ‘various characters appearing in trope talks’ conversation:
At the beginning of the Mind Control trope talk, there’s probably Falst and Dainix sitting on a couch. Either that or someone with a tail and someone with an eye patch.
@veggiesnake What? The joke was ‘haha, look how arrogant Erin is being.’ The fact that he actually isn’t when you said he is doesn’t make the joke funny, it ruins it.
I like how calm everyone is about Alinua’s stupid powerful tree magic. Everyone knows they’re this fantasy world’s Avengers, they know they’re all OP in their own ways, they’re chill about it.
Today’s Aurora Hair Award is the Bisexual Lighting Award!
Congratulations to Erin in panel 4, the winner of the Bisexual Lighting Award! Not sure if the whole ‘freeze the storm’ act was just an excuse to use magic so he could make his hair look this fantastic, but it sure is working!
my personal theory is that the long haired girl is actually the princess red mentioned in her strong female characters video. in the video red talks about how she wrote this prince that she latter changed to a princess and the stick figure has a similar design to the girl. so I am looking forward to see how (if my theory is correct) Tess and the princess become buddies.
in the same video red talks also mentions alinua was also mentions and shown but with green and yellow instead of purple and pink.
@The Registrar i’m sorry, do you have a problem with me? you seem overly irate over a comment that you could have chosen to simply ignore. humour and sarcasm aimed at Erin’s hubristic streak has been fair game since his character was introduced—even if you don’t find me funny (honestly, understandable; i try too hard), you really didn’t need to get so hostile about it. i’m not altering the canon of the comic or denying Erin character development—i don’t have the influence to do so. it’s just a joke. it’s not that deep.
Very Excited and Evil Tree:
I’m going to have to remember that theory, it’s quite interesting. It makes The Ferin Mage seem like more than just a mysterious, elusive douchebag transforming people against their will for funsies; of course, morally speaking, transforming people against their will for “the greater good” isn’t any better, but that motivation makes them, again, more interesting.
Very Excited:
The paladins are the disciples of The Light Dragon, and can use a unique type of magic due to their connection to her. It’s theorized that she’s the primordial of soul energy itself in addition to light, which when put in conjunction with void’s consumptive properties and a balance of the six other elemental properties, allowed The Twins to create species that could propagate and survive on their own.
Speaking as an artist with an extreme love for glowy effects and harsh lighting scenarios, I love the hecking shading on this page.
awesome
What do you mean, “we”?
Meanwhile, Erin makes some snow.
And Tess shoots the sky.
Erin’s face in the 5th panel is just perfect.
erin is now a cheerleader
So I was watching the Trope Talk “Reformed villains” and I think this may or may not be Falst at 0:09. Not really relevant to the page, but oh well, it’s (probably) an Easter egg. I wanted to point it out.

Ooh fancy magic
Ah Tess. I like you, you mysterious metal woman, you.
“A tree broke the prison”, said like it’s the most normal thing she’s seen all day.
“A tree broke the prison”
– Tess, April 15th 2022
@Very Exited
Left hand is water magic, right hand is wind magic
I like that Tess kept shooting at Tynan despite it being mostly ineffective and just very, very mildly distracting to him. Because she has to do something and by golly, she will do something!
Lmao i love Falst’s confusion. “No one tells me shit” member of the group
Lmao TESS
erin be like “i thought I was doing the most impressive feat of magic right now! sure, alinua tore open a mountain, but look, i made it snow!”

Tess asks “You done?”, her brother replies
That he has cooled the rain to snow,
“A tree broke a prison,” adds Tess,
Who saw it, stone- rending grow.
Thank the Twins for Tess’ getting straight to the point. It makes this a lot easier to fit in.
umm I think Reds favorite character is the blacksmith & he mentor more get troped…I admit nothing, but I guess that is video.

TL;DR: all goals complete. Converge on God fight.

@ImuyanMangoCat thankyou, I was looking through the trope talks for that
you could put this in paper & i would read again but on paper.
“Nice. A tree broke the prison.”
If we didn’t already know that Tess and Erin were effectively siblings, this would be all the proof needed.
SO GLOWY
Judging by panel three, that tree would be in Erin’s field of view, unless he was looking straight up the whole time he was performing that spell. For those who don’t get it Erin did not freeze the rain, as he said he cooled the air, all existing rain is still rain, it’s just snowing now

@LightDefender All rain starts as snow before melting into rain. I think Erin has simply made it cold enough for it to stay snow.
@youngstormlord I wondered about that, but then I figure maybe she’s acting as a lightning rod for Erin so that he doesn’t get struck while casting.
@Lightdefender I think Erin means the *magic* won’t stick, not the snow. As in, if they don’t stop Tynan, eventually it’ll start raining again.
these panels are just so beautiful with their snow and glow combination
alinua seems to have shaken off the groginess.
also pretty glow. multiple pretty glows. the runes have vanished and now there is just pretty glows.
This may negatively impact the economy.

weather effects last 5 turns. they should have plenty of time to defeat tynan.

@veggiesnake I wasn’t being hostile. That’s the problem with textual communication, you can’t infer from tone of voice. I was just baffled.
but the artworks so delightful *continues humming*
Is it just me or has the art quality of the comic increased recently

Snow is definitely a bit less terrifying than rain, at first anyway ?
Lightdefender, unless it is evaporating instead of melting, like it does here. The use of magic might be enabling that.
YAH SCREW YOU WEATHERBOY AND SCREW YOU AUTHORITARIANISM HIMSELF
i forgot. who are the Paladin?
Very Excited:
The paladins are the disciples of The Light Dragon, and can use a unique type of magic due to their connection to her. It’s theorized that she’s the primordial of soul energy itself in addition to light, which when put in conjunction with void’s consumptive properties and a balance of the six other elemental properties, allowed The Twins to create species that could propagate and survive on their own.
@Very Exited: June and her peeps at the library are paladins.
@TheUnknownGame @Stark9865
thanks
@LilacSpiral
i was watching “mind control” again, and there is Falst and Erin in there. i paused it at 7:53, and you can see the two of them.
Here we see 2 different types of explanations. Both are good and equally effective, but it’s funny how different they are.
@Aromar Dyspros: It was Trope Talk Episode 5 “Strong Female Characters.”
Hey what element is the purple magic again?
wind
“So that’s why Alinua is taking so long” god I love these people
