also i’m imagining the inmates reaction to this sudden plant growth from the inside and i can’t stop thinking about them looking at it like its a lightsaber melting its way through the prison wall while the water soaks their ankles
looks like falst has had some bad experiences with beurocracy/imprisonment. (tbh I should probably know that from something he said in another comic but ¯\(ツ)/¯)
Oh my god, I can’t believe this guy. The Arenamaster is exactly the kind of bad guy who dies from the very mechanism he put into motion–and everyone cheers his demise.
Also, may I take note of the fact that that trunk don’t look like the watermelon stems. Does alinua just have a bunch of seeds on her at all times?
Also, I propose this concept to all of you. Alinua taking control of a sentinel (or a bunch of rocks and using them to form a body, whichever) using vines and using it to bash up enemies
Oh right. So I’ve decided to start telling jokes in the comments. Now you all know I have a deep affection for bad puns and jokes.
They may sometimes be connected to the page, or they could be totally unrelated.
I’ve been thinking of doing the comic as a ballad- got a refrain:
Divine-forged Kendall and friends
On a canvas of magic most wondrous
Fight battles of cunning and fury amidst
The blaze of magical aurora’s!
The first line can be swapped out for whatever protagonist – The sharp-witted Falst and friends, Cloud-elf Alinua and friends, the void touched Eric n and friends…
Also, I remember reading that emissaries have instinctive knowledge about what they’re in charge of. I wonder what it would be like for Arenamaster if Alinua completely destroys the prison?
Now is Alinua frowning because she’s concentrating on her work or annoyance because of the Arenamaster? Vote now on your phones!
Those roots/vines look a lot denser with life magic symbols than Alinua’s past constructions. A useful indication that these vines are stronger and deeper than her standard fare in order to break open the mountain’s rock.
Notice how both the arenamaster and the guard were dismissive of Falst at first, the former labelling Falst as a beast and focusing on Ali while the later looks almost bored as he tries to shove Falst out the way. Granted Alinua is doing the most potential damage to the prison, but ignoring Falst until he takes down a guard really highlights their attitude to Ferin.
Damn Falst, kicking ass and giving social commentary at the same time, please keep going. Also, was A.M. just trying to save his own skin just now? If so, leaving his post in the middle of a city-wide crisis doesn’t look good for him in Big Z’s eyes I’d expect.
Oh my god, yes, finally we get to see Falst doing his thing.
To be honest, Falst as a strong person has been somewhat overshadowed by the fact that Kendal is much, much stronger, because of course, as previously mentioned, he isn’t the heavy hitter, he’s the rogue. But this demonstrates how much better he is than the average human or elvish person.
Uh, Dainix? Now would be a good time to get out of the arena and fry Garbage Skunk Man here. Think of the poetic justice!
At this rate, the whole prison will be covered in plants before a section of it falls away. Alinua’s only managed to dislodge a few boulders so far, and the rest of the wall here looks quite sturdy still. Man, between the huge, wild vines near Vash, the enormous life-saving tree in Windscrest, the plant colossus near Hilltop, and now turning Zuurith’s prison into a forest, Alinua and Life are really leaving their mark everywhere they go. Makes me wonder how they’ll change Argist after this…
Evil Tree:
Regarding Alinua’s frown, I think it’s a bit of column A, a bit of column B. Regarding the arenamaster’s dereliction of duty: he got a pass for forcing Kendal to fight only because Zuurith is a petty ass with a grudge the size of France against Kendal’s… father? (I’ll say father for the sake of simplicity and also to harken back to that one moment in chapter 11. You know the one.) However, the arenamaster is now just helping himself while effectively executing all of Zuurith’s prisoners and the slave labor they provide, not getting revenge against Zuurith’s enemies. If Zuurith already disapproved of him before all this went down… yeah, his chances of keeping his privileges don’t look too good.
“You already buried them alive.” Yeah he did, the skunk
@Tombshire: Your comments are posting, they just don’t show on your screen when initially posted.
@harmless_spider: They’re roots, but yes.
@WEast: It is? check the page you’re talking about …close, but Kendal grabbed Falst’s head, while Falst goes for center mass. A neat reference, though!
@CJ The Bard: I’m hyped as well! Gonna have to wait for them to make it to Disney+, but I can wait. Patience is a virtue, after all ;-).
OMG! Learning that without a doubt the Arena-master intended to let all the prisoners die – and that the worthless waste of breath wants to stop Alinua from saving the prisoners must be filling Falst with so much JUSTIFIED rage! I want to hug Falst and console him for all the hurt and anger he is feeling … -after- he wipes the stony floor with the guy!!
Is Zuurith ok? He is a massive jerk, but I feel like he could be useful in this situation. More importantly, is Shrike ok? She went home earlier. Can someone check on her?
@gray dragon:
Arena master: I filled a mountain up with petty criminals and if this elf can free them all before a storm god drowns them she’ll win 100,00 dollars.
My good arenamaster, can I just say
FUCK YOU SIR, FUCK YOU!!! You’re going to leave the prisoners to die while you try and escape, and now that others are trying to rescue them from dying a horrible death you want to stop them? I would call you a piece of shit, but that would be an insult to pieces of shit.
Ryan, AGREED wreck him!
Youngstormlord, Lmao, I needed that reference today, thank you, thank you. As for your second comment, it would be exactly what he deserves.
The Registrar, you don’t have to wait long, so help me if he doesn’t get justice served to him I will find a way into this comic and give him that justice damnit! I will rip through the fourth wall with my bare hands!
Icarusancalion, exactly
ImuyanMangoCat, probably. I would like the second idea. As for the jokes, I thought I had escaped the realm of dad jokes… how foolish I was. (Jk, good job on the jokes)
BlandedGear, *applause* good job, good job!
Gendersnatcher, WHO DOESN’T???
Theory Cat, The arenamaster isn’t exactly noted for being smart when it comes to dealing with the floof squad.
Evil Tree, agreed, you can see just how deep the racism runs. Also, GO OFF FALST! It’s awesome to finally see some of his abilities now that he’s not overshadowed by the other members of the floof squad
Orange Hoodie, agreed it is a FASCINATING dynamic
SarissaTelflingDruid, EXACTLY! That’s what I was thinking too!
TheUnknownGame, I think it’s safe to say between Tynan’s storm, Dainix’s fire, Alinua’s plants, and just the general collateral damage going on here, the city will never look quite the same.
Jaq, same, same.
Humanoid Clay, I would agree with you, but I don’t want to insult the poor skunks…
Matthew, yeah, what DID happen to Shrike???
Stark9865, Alinua: No thanks, I’d prefer your head as my prize
WEast, it’s not the exact same move but it’s very similar! I love how fascinating the parallels are! Originally he was trying to become part of society and in the process attacking the others and Kendal stopped him with that move, now he’s trying to stop that society from hurting his friends and using that move to defend them and help free others from that society. You can really see the character development!
the arena master is such a jerk
my weekend was . . . unusally eventful. first, on friday, i almost accidentally burned down my familys newly remodeled kitchen while frying leftover dough from my failed attempt at scones(i added too much liquid), on sunday the power went out at church so we got to go home a hour early, and daylight savings. i try to pretend daylight savings dosen’t exist, because it’s stupid, so i don’t change my watch, but it’s sorta shoved in face when i have to wake up at five instead of six and school starts at 7:40 instead of 8:40.
Oh what a shocker, a prick who uses his position to have power over people weaker than himself.
Who else wants to bet (if they haven’t already), that he’s manipulated Zuurith in some ways, so that Zuurith believes everything he ever did was his own idea? Doesn’t even have to be through magic etc. All it takes is just… steering the conversation in the right direction.
erin’s big critization of falst’s plan to become human is that the magic wouldn’t hold, but i think a much bigger point is that falst would get himself exiled within 5 days for blantant rulebreaking/talking back to figures of authority.
Not quite Zuurith, but probably a more deserving recipient of karmic humiliation if I’m being honest. If Zuurith was here right now he might have the good sense to evacuate the prison, if for no other reason than to lessen the terror that’s fueling Tynan.
I was worried you wouldn’t have much to do this chapter. Kick their asses, Falst!
AlolanVulpix, yup he’s a certified jerk. Your weekend sounded rough. Oh and as for your second comment, I laughed so hard! That’s SO TRUE!
HelloHaiku, that second haiku was AMAZING! Hooray for pi day!
KSClaw, I don’t know who all is going to take that bet, but I’m pretty sure only an idiot would take the opposing side tbh
Ophidiophile, lol you sound like the poor customer service clerks, except more whiny. Then again, just about everything is below the pay grade of customer service workers…
Steve, Lord of Darkness, yeah they are both total assholes, but AM is definitely the bigger asshole.
Hiii: Normally, I’d be inclined to agree with you, but unfortunately there are just too many similarities:
-Black and white colored fur/hair
-Unwanted by nearby people
-Underground domain
-Spews foulness when cornered (from the rear for skunks, from the mouth for A.M)
-Opportunistic
It just keeps going!
@Bush Guardian: Huh. Wonder how that happened.
ImuyanMangoCat:
Your idea to start telling jokes reminds me of phys ed where someone decided to make a “joke of the day,” but yours is actually funny! And along that note, in that class I had a “fun fact of the day” which I think I’ll translate to here starting now.
Did you know…
That while we think of blobfish as being these puddles of derpy mass, in their natural habitat of being 2,000 feet or deeper below sea level, they actually look like a normal fish. The intense pressure of the deep forced them to adapt to being pressing in all directions, meaning in an environment without that pressure they blow out in all directions. We just can’t see what they are like as easily as when they are looking normal we would be crushed like a soda can without special equipment.
So gods are re-shaped by changes on the environment and the perception their worshipers have of them, right?
I love that, because it means Zuurith is also getting his ass kicked.
@Camilo_sama when Zuurith next reappears he’ll be less of an earth golem avatar and more of a muddy puddle with a face

Arena Master calls guards. Shrike shows up unexpectedly, with her team.
Shrike, in a villainous voice: I knew you would show up! Like a dog returns to its vomit, so does a criminal returns to the scene of their crime!
*Falst and Alinua prepare to fight her. Shrike’s power glows*
Shrike: Btw, that is NOT how you break stone most efficiently! Haven’t you learned anything about architecture and materials and how prison’s are built?! I mean, there’s a weak point like two feet to the left! You only have to push a bit here and tug here… See? Like this.
*Shrike blows a huge hole, obliterating the external wall of the prison*
Shrike: Do you have any idea how long I’ve wanted to do this?!
Fuck up his shit, Falst!!!
Ah yes the great daylight shiftening. How could I have forgotten.
Yes, get WRECKED Arenamaster!!
Newspaper headlines in Zuurith tomorrow: “Unknown melon lord strikes again”
I love this comic. I’ve seen every OSP video, and I just bought my first merch, the Athena and arachne tapestries. Thank you red.
Panels 8 and 9 early in development. https://twitter.com/AuroraWebcomic/status/1361537828690264065?s=20&t=oMRFdgSYE2C7tgvZarBWjA
This page speaks for itself, so I’ll just sit back and wait for the angry comments.
hehe catboy ideological catharsis go WHAM

Why won’t my comments post?
Oh my god, I can’t believe this guy. The Arenamaster is exactly the kind of bad guy who dies from the very mechanism he put into motion–and everyone cheers his demise.
Comment post working now?
DOWN WITH THE BEUROCRATS
That is bad ass Falst!
This first joke is one of the latter:
Q: what do you call a bagel that can fly?
A: a Plane bagel.
Falst is right and he should say it.
Wait, I just realized… Arena Master was literally escaping and leaving inmates to die!
“We’ll take the east road up the slope before” … the prison floods and everybody dies.
It will be very ironic if he drowns in HIS prison.
Small detail, but did Falst just use the same grapple on that guard that Kendal used on him back in that Forest?
Out catboi is a quick study!
the tree looks so cool
I’ve been thinking of doing the comic as a ballad- got a refrain:
Divine-forged Kendall and friends

The blaze of magical aurora’s!
The first line can be swapped out for whatever protagonist – The sharp-witted Falst and friends, Cloud-elf Alinua and friends, the void touched Eric n and friends…
Falst go and be badass
“Don’t lecture me, beast!” man i wanna see that guy die so bad
TL;DR: Sorry arena master, you have just lost any sense of honor you might’ve once had. Time to feed you to the lions.
Alright, Falst! Wreck them all!
Also, I remember reading that emissaries have instinctive knowledge about what they’re in charge of. I wonder what it would be like for Arenamaster if Alinua completely destroys the prison?
@ImuyanMangoCat I wouldn’t be surprised if she does
Hey, that’s the move Kendal used on Falst during the fight over the lacrima! I love that he’s using it too!
my brain atamaticly read beast as mr beast
Who else noticed Ali has no mouth?
also: Falst looks LEGENDARY in the eighth panel.
This page is fantastic and I’m reading after getting epic Owl House promos and such so this day is already one of the best in a while!!
My man he just took out a guard who was noticeably bigger than him with one hand. Adding more guards isn’t going to help this situation.
Oh! Oh yes! This is a good dynamic! When the rogue protects somebody else in the party by running interference!

Falst berates that beurocrat,
The spineless Arenamaster,
Alinua cracks the prison apart
Though “Guards!” attempt to stop her!
Might try a ballad form with longer lines in future- or maybe two verses to a page?
Hold on is that the same move Kendal used on him, with the arm grab/ takedown? HELL yes falst!!!
Falst can have a little violence towards bureaucrats, as a treat
ah, the tournament arc is coming along nicely…
Uh, Dainix? Now would be a good time to get out of the arena and fry Garbage Skunk Man here. Think of the poetic justice!

Arena master: I filled a mountain up with petty criminals and if this elf can free them all before a storm god drowns them she’ll win 100,00 dollars.
God Red, I so love your work.
I feel as though the more superpowered characters we add to the story falst will just become rather useless.
Where is HelloHaiku? Are they safe?
alt text: good news, Falst, you aren’t totally superfluous in this situation! now have fun~

for pie day

@ImuyanMangoCat, not seagulls and baygulls?, yes puns are the best aren’t we.
and that’s now two of the floof squad who’ve tried to break through stone to save people, pattern?
That’s the look of a ,man who realized they have VASTLY underestimated these people.
I am ready to see Falst send up a blaze of righteous fury.
My good arenamaster, can I just say

“Guards, help! This is beneath my pay scale!”
@CJ Thé Bard
you are getting promos for *what*
Unrelated, my name is now glowy and yellow now.
Speaking as a career bureaucrat, may I just say…never mind the evil storm god, fuck that prison master’s shit up, Falst!
AlolanVulpix, yup he’s a certified jerk. Your weekend sounded rough. Oh and as for your second comment, I laughed so hard! That’s SO TRUE!
HelloHaiku, that second haiku was AMAZING! Hooray for pi day!

Steve, Lord of Darkness, yeah they are both total assholes, but AM is definitely the bigger asshole.
To Bush Guardian:
I was wondering for a while now, how does one achieve it?
Falst is about to ruin this man’s whole career
@Camilo_sama when Zuurith next reappears he’ll be less of an earth golem avatar and more of a muddy puddle with a face
that might actually be more terrifying tho
Third to last panel: Falst has mastered MENACE!
Hiii: it wasn’t that rough. i was planning on skipping second hour church anyways(i don’t like class age group or young womens), and i try new repices often enough that if i got sad every time i failed one i would be in an everlasting state of depression (it occurs to me as i write this comment you could be refering to the ‘almost burned down the kitchen part’. what happened with that is the oil i was frying the dough in started to smoke so i moved the pan and it splashed onto the burner. the fire wasn’t very big and burned itself out pretty quickly, but there was definitly a moment of ‘ack, mom will kill me if i destory the kitchen that just got fixed’. i don’t know how to write sarcasm but panicking is fun, is it not?)
@Hiii glad to be of some assistance 🙂
Another idea:
*prisons
not prison’s
And this is why we have a look out
Ha
Oh fuck, I actually love no explanation EVEN MORE.
Prospect: Falst kills Bureaucrat McTwatface & his pet mooks.
Pros:
– Bureaucrat McTwatface & mooks die
– Falst gets a more overtly criminal reputation, deeper dislike of humanity at large
Cons: ???
I think we can all be happy with this situation.
actually arenamaster, that’s really racist and quite possibly a slur in this context.
