Alas, the sketches of page got removed earlier this year. Apparently there were some updates or maintenance to the site, and keeping it would’ve been more trouble than it was worth
90s kid Tahrain: You can bet your hot ass it can! Not every god, but a pushover storm god like that dingus above? Totally. *finger guns*
Dainix: Totally radical, my dude. *finger guns*
*runs towards the lightning*
While Tahraim’s doing his therapy thing, any chance you could send him around this world? Could do a world of good for a lot of people, myself included.
that must be Tess and Erin, right? it looks like that lightning is striking from the ground up at the storm
makes me wonder just what Tynan’s capabilities are; if he’s incarnated, can he also consciously control the storm itself on a wide scale? can he be fighting Kendal over there, and also striking Erin and Tess over here? i would imagine so
Alas, I think Tahraim’s brand of therapy only works on Crucibles. Most of us don’t have soulfire burning inside us to use to transform ourselves. Alas.
Now this is a question I don’t think Tahraim will give a cryptic response to.
Art wise, the final panel (chef’s kiss). The city’s warm glow being swamped by rain and clouds, the full fury of the storm just waiting behind the walls, and that central lightning bolt with SFX is a great centrepiece (even if it’s probably being directed at Kendal).
I’m having a few doubts about the “fire primordial/demon” theory. Soulfire, if the name is meant literally, would imply a mix of fire magic and soul energy; if he was the fire primordial’s vessel his fire would just be the former. Tahraim also seems acquainted with what Dainix is; “A” crucible, not “THE” crucible, more that one could be possible.
Demon may only be what Dainix’s village called crucibles because they didn’t have the knowledge of what they were dealing with. Granted the fire primordial theory isn’t disproven yet, so we’ll have to see.
I was thinking of sending an ask to the tumblr to see what soulfire was a few pages back. But now, I think I’ll hold back and see for myself.
To Evil Tree:
I’m into the theory that Crucibles are like the Chimeric Plague. Especially if what almost happened with Danix is a common outcome. Also, I’ve seen a title of Stormbreaker somwhere, and assumed it was relating to Tess, could someone explain whether I was right or not, and where did it come from?
I Wonder if all that you are the “fire” means he is somehow chosen by fire primordial? After all something super dangerous and unpleasant ,that changes to cool and significant power up does sound familiar.
I can’t tell if Tahriam’s little smirk is like “NOW you’re on the right track” or if it’s “You’re going to get absolutely destroyed, but good try”. Probably the first one.
Also, that “Think of somewhere you’d rather be?” “Constantly”? Sooo relatable.
Also, Dainix taking advantage of his unique powers to defeat a god like a big boy.
See that storm? We’re gonna LIGHT IT ON FIRE! It’s like that Adele song but literally.
I’ve really liked this mini-arc with Dainix because I think it’s hilarious how confused he’s been this whole time and great how he’s getting some help. I really like the “hurt/comfort” trope. It’s interesting to me that Tahraim calls him a crucible, rather than a demon, as he’s called himself before. Seems like Tahraim knows more about his condition than Dainix does, which implies, to me, that whatever this is exactly Caliban has a good idea what it is and explained it to Tahraim during their last visit.
Dang it red! Just show us danix’s eye already!
For the theorists in the comments- i don’t think that Danix is actually part of a fire primordial like i thought before this. The conversations about soul fire in the last three pages make me think that he and his power comes from something else. Another player in the game if you will. Maybe even another ally or enemy of the paladins. Also i wonder if the paladins will try to do anything about tenants if the floof squad can’t manage him. And yes danix and Tess are part of the floof squad. I think that they are going to be the last few members of our- soon to be- five man band. Also, dang i got off topic quick with this comment.
“Crucible.” Now there’s a title I haven’t used for Dainix since before I knew what his name was. Nice to see that it has an official mention, because calling Dainix a Crucible sounds nicer than calling him a demon.
Oof. Judging from the right edge of the final battle, I’m guessing that tempest is where Tynan and Kendal are duking it out. I also like that Tynan bristles with both types of lightning present in this world, yellow and blue. Finally: judging by the location of that bolt in the center, it looks like it could be the Ruunasers slinging lightning at the clouds. Maybe they’re attempting to sever Tynan’s connection like I suggested several pages back, but I doubt it’s going to work. (Alternatively, it could be Tynan slinging lightning at the Ruunasers. As I remember the shield Erin cast in the lightning sector of The Storm, I don’t think they’re in danger if this is the case.)
Evil Tree:
I’m kind of with you on this one, in that I have doubts that Dainix is the avatar of Fire. Granted, we still haven’t seen what, exactly, is in place of Dainix’s missing eye (though now I’m doubting it’s a fire rune, since Tahraim said that it was Dainix’s own guilt that burned it out); additionally, Dainix being ‘a’ Crucible rather than being ‘the’ Crucible could just mean that multiple Crucibles have been encountered throughout history, instead of there being multiple ones present at the same time. But, considering that Life’s situation seems unique, I think the other primordials (barring the dragons) are all too dead to have avatars.
CaptainCutlet:
Yes, a Stormbreaker is a metal-caste person like Tess who was chosen by the sky. It probably came from one of Red’s answers on the comic’s Tumblr page a long while back.
@CapitainCutlet
If that’s true, but it’s a lesser-known version (Like, it only happens in the desert that I forget the name of), then it could tie into another theory I saw on here, I think, where having the Chimeric Plague is what allows you to make a connection with Life in the first place. Like, if you live, phenomenal cosmic power, if not, much destruction. IDK, though, but that leans toward the primordial theory pretty hard. On the other hand, that epithet, Crucible…
Crucible (noun)
1. a ceramic or metal container in which metals or other substances may be melted or subjected to very high temperatures.
So by his nature as a Crucible, he contains his fire for the most part, and he can be very dangerous when mishandled or can be very productive at creating things that would be otherwise impossible. Also, interestingly, a Crucible specifically refers to what holds the fire, not the fire itself. In fact, the epithets that Tahraim assigns to both Kendal and Dainix refer to them in relation to their divine power, not the power itself. Kendal is a weapon Vash created to wield against his enemies, so The Divine Blade, a weapon for a god. And Dainix is a body made to contain his inner fire, a Crucible that contains the flame but also empowers it (empowers it? Using his ability to have an actual mortal body? Like a soul? To empower the fire? To make soulfire?)
That was a bit of a tangent, but yeah.
I hope the next page is Alinua and Fast, or maybe Tess and Erin. I like catharsis as much as anyone, but I also like using amazing magical powers to help people in need.
Things seem to be starting to maybe, wind up. Looks like the calverys coming, Kendal.
Everything looks so cool, with the lightning is coming down a little bit away from the city. If you look back at 1-16-2, then the city walls are somewhat close in the background, (all the better for Tynn to inspire terror in the citizens,) so I think Kendal just got hit by more lightning.
So I went back to Tahraim’s story, and it mantions vash burning away tynan’s storm with blue fire. Soo,maby it won’t just be Dainix getting a cool firey upgrade.
Commenting again just to let everyone know that Magnolia Porter-Siddell, author of the webcomic Monster Pulse, has released a new webcomic titled The Golden Boar! I really enjoyed Monster Pulse when it was still running, so I’ve been looking forward to The Golden Boar’s release! Those who have played Magnolia’s fantasy romance game Rose of Winter might recognize the name of the setting. Click the link below if you’re interested and have a good day!
tahraim in panels 3 and 8 looks so smug
using the pokemon type chart fire could hurt a water-electric-flying type, but it’ll be reduced damaged, so dainix can help but probably won’t be a key player. of course, this isn’t pokemon, so. . .
red show us his eye already, you can’t hide it forever
scene change to erin and tess(maybe[hopefully])
To EvilTree, SarrissaTieflingDruid, TheUnknownGame:
I’m not sure the hybrid demon/primordial theory holds up, but one could make a case for the demon half of it still being on solid ground. Especially if one reframes it in light of this new information–having soulfire makes one a Crucible, but only if the fire is kept tame. If it is left to rage uncontrollably, or grows in strength too quickly to be managed, then the Crucible becomes a Demon. Of course, we still don’t know what exactly makes a Crucible beyond soulfire (or if it’s not just having a much greater amount/ability to access it that sets one apart from other Ignans), but I have a feeling that we may find that out eventually…
Of course, what’s really interesting about Dainix being called a Crucible is the double-meaning of the word…Because yes, literally, it is a smithing tool used to melt and combine metals and other materials. But in the metaphorical sense, it is an agent of great change. It’s usually some sort of trial or conflict that the character must survive, and from which they cannot escape unscathed, so to see a character symbolically named such is very interesting… The obvious answer would be that it’s indicative of Dainix’s flame being brought under control (and thus he can access a far greater breadth and depth to his powers and wield them without hesitation or fear–a typical power-up arc) . The less obvious answer… Well, that’s where things begin to get interesting. We’ll just have to see what happens when he inevitably and officially joins the Floof Squad.
To Sunstorm the Budgie and SarrissaTieflingDruid:
He’s not got embers in it/under-lighting from various flames anymore, so it does look darker. It’s could also be that like his markings it was glowing slightly because of his raging inner fire, or halfway to transmuting into flame itself. Hard to say at this point, but since we’ll most likely be seeing Dainix deliberately setting himself on fire at least once from here on out, I’m sure we’ll get an answer sooner than later
In general, loving those last couple panels. Dainix’s still-conflicted expression but determined last question and Tahraim’s look of pride, then cutting to the tableau outside the city walls…Excellent transition there (although, it looks like poor Kendal is really not having a good time. Ouch).
And something that just occurred–it’s not necessarily a flaw in the theory, but if it’s true, and especially if there are other Vessels out there (and especially if they’re all appearing in a relatively short span of the), them that leaves open the possibility of a final conflict between them played out via avatar–and how much of said avatar’s original self would remain during and after conflict could be up for debate. Taking that even further, it could even require, should things go very wrong, for those avatars to fully take on the mantles of the deities they’re bound to, up to and including sacrificing themselves for the good of/rebirth of the world… Not that I see that being a likely endgame scenario, but the fact that the possibility could exist under the proper conditions is still a rather nasty thought. Not because of the nature of the plot device itself, but the effect it would have on both those making the sacrifice and those left behind…
“Soulfire…can it burn a god?”

@Various different people: Considering what happened with Alinua, I’d say Dainix has a chance of contacting Primordial Fire, but I’m thinking for narrative reasons, since Alinua’s already got the whole “If Primordials work in mysterious ways, how the flip am I supposed to know what’s going on with them” schtick, that him doing that is pretty slim. Maybe it could be an end of comic mega power up against the VD, but otherwise he’s got his own thing with Tahraim and Caliban going on. As with Tess, she hasn’t shown that much connection with her lightning powers besides as a physical enhancement, so I have high doubts that she’s going to connect much with Primordial Lightning if at all.
@Christmouse: Absolutely :-).
@Zer0 W0lf again: Thank to to the link to The Golden Boar. I am appreciative for the addition to my collection, especially with one so new (I’ve never actually found one this recent before, so thanks). I am looking forward to following along with you there as well as here :-).
I Wonder if all that you are the “fire” means he is somehow chosen by fire primordial? After all something super dangerous and unpleasant that changes to cool and significant power up does sound familiar
Ahhh, now I understand how this all fits together… I missed a lot the first time through. Also, I’m surprised how much Dainix’s hair is shaped like Kendal’s now that the hairband is gone
OH HO HO
GO DAINIX GO!
Probably not the god of smiths, but definitely a god of storms. LETS BURN A GOD WOOOOOOO
Right to the point
Head to the Sketches page. The second image from the bottom has the file name “crucible-908×1024.”
i feel kind of silly for asking but where do i find he sketches page
Alas, the sketches of page got removed earlier this year. Apparently there were some updates or maintenance to the site, and keeping it would’ve been more trouble than it was worth
Tahraim in the 6th panel looks proud. Yes, my friend, you’ve put it together.
…and can soulfire burn The Collector?
3am here, but who needs sleep when an update’s available?
90s kid Tahrain: You can bet your hot ass it can! Not every god, but a pushover storm god like that dingus above? Totally. *finger guns*
Dainix: Totally radical, my dude. *finger guns*
*runs towards the lightning*
That. Smirk. YAS!
OH YEAH, LOVE TO SEE THAT DRAMATIC TRANSITION! Tahraim doesn’t even need to say anything, the paneling says it all!! HELL YEAH, KICK SOME ASS GANG
*foreshadowing?*
Alternative version:
Dainix: Soulfire. Can it burn a god?
Tahraim: Do you wanna know how I got these scars?
*confusion*
Tahraim: Yeah, soulfire can burn a god.
*Tahraim
Receptacle of an ancient evil wrestles with his self-loathing then immediately tries to fight God, more at 11
Tahraim knows what’s up.
Now that Dainix has calmed down,
Go and help Kendal!
Let’s Gooooo Dainix!!!! Burn the bubble-haired Tynan!
OH HELL YEAH DAINIX!! Destroy hiiimmmmmmmmmm
OH HELL YEAH DAINIX!!!! Destroy hiiiimmmmmmmmmm!!!
And even without the bandage or the fire, Red taunts us by keeping his right eye hidden…
What, does he have a Sharingan or something? 😛
Oh yeah, that facial expression in the second-to-last panel!!
Oooh, he’s gonna fight Tynan!
Also, did his hair change colour? It looks… darker than before. Idk, maybe it’s just the lighting.
While Tahraim’s doing his therapy thing, any chance you could send him around this world? Could do a world of good for a lot of people, myself included.

The color change is the fact that his hair is now wet. Previously it was too on fire for that kind of thing. It’s such a tiny detail from red lol.
mmMmmMMMmM spicy angst boye
TL;DR: now that I’ve got my mojo back, it’s time to kick some cloudy butt!
LET’S GOOOOOOOO
I just caught up (after staying away for a bit so I could binge) and I love Tahraim so much, what a cool god

What a metal line.
GO FIRE BOY GO!
I ship it

If he burned away all the excess catharsis fire why are there still sparks in the air?
If all the excess angry guilty catharsis fire is gone, why are there still sparks in the air?
Do I sense, NUMBER 6 OF THE GANG? (Counting Tess as number 5)
Just look at that smirk. That was the exact question Tahraim was hoping for.
This… opens up so many possibilities, I can’t begin to form my words
Every page I just love Dainix and Tarahim more, both excellent characters!
Spicy boy solved his emotional problems 🙂
“Soulfire…can it burn a god?”
OOO-! YEAH! GEDDUM, DAINIX!! SINGE HIS MOISTURE-BASED BUTT RIGHT OUT THE SKY!

I Wonder if all that you are the “fire” means he is somehow chosen by fire primordial? After all something super dangerous and unpleasant that changes to cool and significant power up does sound familiar
Its gonna Be a Lvl 4 Specal With Danix and kendal
All according to Tahraim’s plan
tahraim is smug bastard (affectionate), tynan is smug bastard (derogatory)
I love where the stories going! your writing has always been awesome, it’s so rich ahhh
I drew fanart of one of the characters! (I hope I don’t get bonked for sharing a link)
https://www.deviantart.com/stormheartsreturn/art/Alinua-908995932
BURN A GOD! BURN A GOD!
Also the panel with the lightning is *chef’s kiss* very very good
Dainix x Kendal or what???? romantically of course kendal is ace but still
The flame is gone – the fire remains
Ahhh, now I understand how this all fits together… I missed a lot the first time through. Also, I’m surprised how much Dainix’s hair is shaped like Kendal’s now that the hairband is gone
