FIIIIGHT i love dainix and his lies of omission im absolutely rioting for this page. My personal thoughts on what the rest of the squad might do is a sequejce that aprallels the prison break attempt, where instead of being dismissed whoever suggests they go looking is actually like… validated, because theyve learnt how to function without their glue (kendal). Whatever happens i will dimply go insane though thank you red for the good content and ur service
ooooooooof. oh dainix that attitutde canNot be good for your brain or health. however kendal, the character who Barely takes care of himself bc His Goal Is More Important to the point that it could probabky qualify as self harm? meeting a man that is similarly suicidally dedicated? oh thats juicy, and they should get therapy together
That is heartbreaking but also can we keep him:’) I just really want him to be a part of the group. It’s not like his affliction is going to be worse than what Erin has going on and I just love his relationship with Kendal
Dainix: Yes, it’s true! The demon is inside of me! An unknown and powerful force of nature inhabiting a mere mortal body! Never seen anything like it have you? Kendal: Actually I have; twice before and this makes three. Dainix: … Really? Huh, you must get around.
Gods have coloured speech bubbles, primordials have coloured text outside of bubbles and it seems demonic possession has volcanic cracking stylised text in fragmented speech bubbles. Nice meaning behind it too, cracks appearing in the letters, as with Dainix’s body, and the bubbles breaking apart, his potential fate if he doesn’t get the demon under control.
I’m willing to be Alinua’s been pacing this whole time, if the current context and Falst’s expression are anything to go by. Tess continues to look at the sky and I’m wondering if Erin is questioning whether his message got through.
Next weeks prediction: Alinua getting more worried about Kendal not being here, and potentially Erin agreeing so they go back to the prison. Maybe they even hear of the arena match from someone. Dainix continues to deteriorate and the match become more dangerous, maybe Zuurith intervenes, maybe not.
I did not see that revelation coming! I wonder if Aluina might be acting like Kendal – an active agent in life rather than someone who tried to protect herself and others by isolating herself, as in the first chapter this story. Comics is an underappreciated art form in many places only recognized in retrospect for its influence on peoples’ lives as a source of wonder and hope.
Do the others know what’s going on? Alinua is walking somewhere and is she going to try to stop this fight? Also the best time to argue semantics is obviously when you’re fighting for your life and you have a chance of distracting the opponent or getting them to stop.
This feels like the wizard of oz as the gang is growing on the way to the monks and everyone needs something from the monks. Also I think that the junior archivist is going to join the gang, as in a trope talks episode I saw the floof squad made up of kendal, ali Erin falst tess dainix and the junior archivist.

Guys, I checked the page The Crime Duo are talking about, and Dainix isn’t exactly untruthful. Here’s the exchange:
D: “I’m hunting a monster.”
K: “Hunting-?”
D: “Well, not really. I’m trying to find a way to kill it.”
Red, you’re foreshadowing is superb .
Anyways, I promised you all a PASTRIVIA Wednesday, and I’m not about to back down on it. This one is somewhat tricky: When did the Demon “take a lot” from Dainix?
A: A sef after Lyssandra’s?
B: 2 days after Ishva’s turn?
C: 5 days after Pendulum’s Swing?
D: a sef and a half before The Feast of the Scales?
@Straythoughts: Considering the last time he tried to interface with a part of Tynan, he might not, but who knows.
Kendal is saying what we’ve all been saying. Dainix is saying what I deeply hope doesn’t have to happen. Of course, the only other magical unshackling we’ve seen is Alinua’s, and hers was both involuntary (as far as we know) and potentially not the same sort of thing that Dainix is going through. The speech bubbles here are an indication; when Alinua and Life share a brain cell, so to speak, Alinua’s speech bubble gains a second, minute, bright green pointer, indicating that Life’s voice can be faintly heard beneath Alinua’s. Here, there is no second pointer, indicating to me that the demon might not be Fire trying to find an avatar like Life did; we don’t even know if Fire was reawakened or not.
DisatrousGoth:
Zuurith: “Oh, shut up alr-”
Kendal, preparing for an ‘I know you’re in there somewhere’ fight: “Boy’s possessed.”
I don’t think Red just drew the fifth panel for transition. That lightning means something. Tynan is gonna hit soon.
Also, how is Dainix such a cool character!? Why does he look so good?! And why doesn’t he have a fire resistant hairband?!
…it suddenly occurs to me that Dainix might be fighting/breaking up *not* at the thought of being forced to fight Kendal, but because he’s realized that Kendal has an actual chance of killing “the demon” 🙁
Kendal thinking that Dainix was lying reminds me of Erin’s little bluff back when he got into the archives. “The best lies are the ones that are technically true.”
Please don’t die on us, Sir Hot Boi the Floof! Your Floofiness is too precious to be lost to the world!
I wonder what Caliban is trying to accomplish here. Like, did they know that Dainix is a demon? Is this a case of gods not empathizing with mortals and treating them like pawns? Was Caliban hoping to avoid this, but Tahraim believes that this is the only way Caliban can get what they want? Is Caliban only playing along because Vash got what he needed by complying with Tahraim’s game?
This is the first entry in the series I had to wait for after binging the rest of the comic in 2 day.
Oh my god it’s so worth it.
I’m intrigued; how long does it take to draw a page like this?
@Zer0 W0lf: if you’re saying what I think your saying, YES! I’ve been saying that for least a week, finally some validation.
@Evil Tree: Kendal: …uh and I am a mortal soul in the body of a god so whislt it’s different I get the feeling
DAINIX WITH HIS HAIR DOWN DAINIX WITH HIS HAIR DOWN
THIS IS GETTING REAL
So, it is confirmed that Dainix is the demon. I guess he misled us when he said that it “burned out”, which I took to mean that it died, but I guess it just stopped being on fire so much. Until now that is. Looking back at what he said, it seems like the demon has never reached it’s endgame- when the body is completely burned away and nothing is left but firey fury and a scorch mark on the ground. According to Dainey, “They’re mindless, driven by instinct and emotion”, which makes me reflect on all the times we’ve seen Dainix use fire magic- when he almost got kebab-ed by the Elephant shifter and destroyed their weapon, it was probably instinct. All the cracking we’ve been seeing since then is likely caused by emotion, the angst coming from having to fight a friend. It also makes sense why he is usually so chill, even about the arena, even when he’s fighting- if he doesn’t, he could explode. Of course, wrestling with his emotions isn’t something that comes naturally from his training, so that probably doesn’t help when the does start to crack- suppressing the emotions likely comes with a bit of guilt, which is also an emotion, causing more cracks. It also links back to what Dainey said about anger being a weapon: in this case, quite literally. If he gets angry enough, he starts spewing fire, but he can’t control it very effectively.
I think that it’s interesting that, despite all this, Dainix doesn’t seem angry while fighting, just sort of resigned. The only time he seemed angry was on Monday’s page, when he was spitting fire and Kendal realized something was really wrong.
Sorry for all my rambling but now the the reveal is done I can go back and overanalyze previous comic pages.
Kendal: If I had a nickel for every time I met a person, began to bond with them, and discovered they were being possessed by a powerful and likely malevolent being I’d have… Three nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s the majority of my friend group at this point.
Guys, I checked the page The Crime Duo are talking about, and Dainix isn’t exactly untruthful. Here’s the exchange:
D: “I’m hunting a monster.”
K: “Hunting-?”

Red, you’re foreshadowing is superb .
Anyways, I promised you all a PASTRIVIA Wednesday, and I’m not about to back down on it. This one is somewhat tricky: When did the Demon
Oh no! The character limit! Let’s try this again… When did “the Demon” arrive at Dainix’s village?
A: A sef after Lyssandra’s Turn?
B: 2 days after Ishva’s Turn?
C: A sef and a half before The Feast of The Storyteller
D: 5 days after Pendulum’s Swing
@Straythoughts: Considering the last time Erin tried to connect with Tynan, perhaps not
@Geebi: PFFFT-!
@Steve (in response to last page): Umm, not that they wouldn’t, but I have seen RWBY. Still, good to see someone else here who likes the show :-).
Chapter 13 page 12: Dainix expresses sympathy for “not being as human as you look”. Page 13, Dainix says he assumed Kendal had been a human before being…whatever he is now. (And asks “how long he’s known” that he was that.)
Chapter 13 page 23: “I’m hunting a monster.” “Hunting—?” “Well, not exactly. I’m finding a way to kill it.” So Dainix did say the exact phrase he said he hadn’t said, he just corrected it (and apparently didn’t expect anyone with the ability to go back and re-view moments of his past would analyze his statements).
Dainix also says that a demon appeared and “took a lot from [him].”
And that’s about all we’ve heard about Dainix’s condition. But I think it was common speculation that the “demon” was the Fire Primordial’s version of the Chimeric Plague, people given obscenely powerful but uncontrolled fire magic. This feels like more evidence for that theory.
HOLY CRAP
If Tynan jumps in, maybe he wants to kill Kendal himself, then we will have a color schemed, Red Yellow and Blue fight, Dainix, Tynan, and Kendal respectively. But since Red doesn’t like simple color schemes, that’s only the color of the powers they wield.
(From the fan discord)
Dainix: You CAN’T help me! I’M A HIGHLY DANGEROUS MAGICAL TIME BOMB!
Kendal: Oh… I’ve already got two of those.
Erin: Hi!
Alinua: Welcome to the club.
So far the only mortals who have gotten extra colors thrown onto their speech bubbles have been Dainix and Alinua. Alinua’s are far more gentle accents, most likely because she has a much more stable connection with Life. Dainix is absolutely the demon, as confirmed on this page. The description sounds similar to what happened with the chimeric plague, with all the exploding and raw magic being released, but a lot more rare and less well known. Furthermore, the reason why the Ignans are more familiar with demons than anybody is the fact that Life is present in every mortal, while innate connections to fire are much more volatile and rare. Caliban wants Dainix to become the first demon in control of themself, and thus more capable to serve their people. (He probably got himself caught in prison because he thought it’d be more safe than wandering the desert)
Assuming that Dainix and Tess join the Floof Squad permanently, that would mean that the weakest member of the group can literally jump off a cliff with someone else’s weight on top of him without dying on impact, and the second-weakest can beat a dragon in a fist fight. Overpowered protags FTW!
As Dainix would put it, this is a “Win-Win” situation. Either he gets out of here and can continue his quest for knowledge or Kendal kills the demon. Downside? What downside?
So, what I’m hearing is that this will be the grandest and most badass telling of the Wizard of Oz known to man. If I only had my God, the Primordial, Acceptance, and a double Exorcism instead of a Heart, a Brain, Courage, and a way back to the Land Of Flat. Which is my personal name for Kansas, even though much of Iowa and Nebraska looks suspiciously similar. Especially when you realize you’ve never seen the three of them in the same room.
I’m not sure if Dainix’s lettering is colored black and fiery or if its just erased parts of the speech bubble and we see whats behind it as like negative space writing but either way its COOL!
Panel 3 is just AWESOME
And huzzah! us commenters finally get closure on the “is Dainix the demon?” question that we’ve been posing since he mentioned it XD.
Tahraim and Caliban both wanted Dainix to unleash his inner “demon” of fire. Why? He must be capable of controlling his transformation and abilities, or otherwise he’d be useless to them — and they certainly wouldn’t plan to give him a weapon. They refer to him as a champion who’s expected to do the impossible, and who needs to believe he has agency.
Granted, Caliban is an agent of chaos, but they are still the god of the Ignans. Their plan would be to the ultimate benefit of the Ignans, if in a particularly Caliban-y way. (I get the sense that the Ignans are semi-nomadic — perhaps? — and nomadic cultures often have gods tha are unpredictable and need to be appeased, reflecting their own vulnerability to the elements.) Even Zuurith does what he does for his domain. He’s just made of the beliefs of his people, who feel safe if there are laws and rules strictly enforced. Which brings up the point: if we’re really mad at Zuurith, it seems the worst thing for him would be if his people found his rules didn’t keep them safe. It would greatly diminish him, would it not? At the worst (assuming gods don’t blink out of existence) even change his form.
Aw, Dainix:( Red’s BDG quote for him is making a lot more sense now. (For reference, it’s “When all hope seemed lost, I had an epiphany. I’m going to throw myself into the sea.”)
Let’s hope that the next line about someone stopping him and explaining that he didn’t have to categorize all the monsters, he could just pick (or be?) the hot one, is also true.
Yay, Alinua stopped waiting and decided to act.
Did Dainix’s ponytail just yeet itself into nonexistence
he on x games mode
RIP Dainix’s ponytail. You will be sorely missed until he regains his chill.
That’s not an healthy attitude Dainix ‘-‘
if the fight ends tragically I /will/ cry. This is a threat.
This page’s image source: demon.
And don’t worry Dainix, you’re not the only one possessed by a highly dangerous, extremely malicious force!

All jokes aside, the art is looking incredible!

Kendal is really pretty in the second panel
As Dainix would put it, this is a “Win-Win” situation. Either he gets out of here and can continue his quest for knowledge or Kendal kills the demon. Downside? What downside?
Ooo, that twist!
So, what I’m hearing is that this will be the grandest and most badass telling of the Wizard of Oz known to man. Bolo, I was also starting to get Wizard of Oz vibes from the quest here,
Shit begins hitting the fan
Here’s a question: Why is Dainix Caliban’s champion if he’s a demon?
Sorry if I spelt their names wrong.
I also was getting those vibes. I hope the soulshaper monks are more directly helpful than the wizard though.
Aye, alright then.
Is that another party member with a dangerous and uncontrollable affliction i spy
I’m not sure if Dainix’s lettering is colored black and fiery or if its just erased parts of the speech bubble and we see whats behind it as like negative space writing but either way its COOL!

@Fulminata I think you’ve meant Falst not Tess. Tess was “Chosen by the Sky” which I believe is Lightning equivalent to Danix’s “Demon” thing.
@Zer0 W0lf Oh okay. Thanks.
