Next time Kendal picks up the sword he’ll find several unread messages, mostly along the lines of “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! TYNAN IS RIGHT THERE! QUIT THE PRISON TEA PARTY AND GET OUT!”.
Time for a breather after Red blew the collective minds of the entire comment section. Still Kendal’s angst isn’t unfounded; with the caves to navigate and the Collector being so powerful it was inevitable doubts over whether he can win would creep in. While he does sound hopeful in that last panel he doesn’t particularly look hopeful.
So Dainix is up to speed on at least Kendal’s end of the plot; I don’t think he’d reveal the Void stuff lest word leak to the Paladins and put Erin in trouble. Maybe Kendal wanted Dainix’s opinions as to how to combat the Collector, since his people are monster hunters.
Art wise Indigo Toxin might have a point; Kendal looks a little more creased and scruffy here. Caused by deprivation from his sword? Frustration at his inability to contact Vash? Also art wise, you can still see the chunk of stone Kendal broke off in panel 5.
@Indigo Toxin: I chose my name from a minor character from a comedy show called The Mighty Boosh. He was on screen for less than five minutes before getting killed by being sanded down into a table, but I liked the name so I use it on many sites online.
TL;DR: We take a break from the chaos of the streets to bring you “jail chat”. Just two prisoners chilling and talking about their issues. This time, it’s “Help! Dad hung up on me!”
Indigo Toxin: I am bad with names (I’m kind of embarrassed with my name choices for my characters because of this) so I kind of just decided, “you know what? This obvious name isn’t taken yet!”
Nooooo Kendal there’s no reason for Vash to be mad at you! He just wants to protect your stubborn self and your inherited personality is making that hard!
On an unrelated note… I chose my username based on my old Irish Dance solo dress.
@indigo toxin
I chose my username because I love ancient history and found this name (it’s Greek) I liked it and have used it for my online presence ever since.
Kendal, always the optimist. I suspected we’d go to the Jail bros instead of getting further elaboration on the “Tess and Erin are related” thing because Red likes to watch us squirm. Still, it’s nice to see the bros. I really like how chill they are together. it’ll be fun when Dainix joins the squad- he can be a voice of reason and peacekeeper/group therapist.
@ Indigo Toxin: AS for my username, I chose it because… I like the bird Goldfinch. I wasn’t feeling particularly creative when I came up with it but it’s good enough for me at least for now. I think your username is pretty cool though, and the OC that shares that name sounds cool as well.
I wonder if this chapter will end with Kendal and Dainix being summoned to the arena or Alinua receiving Erin’s message and being shocked at hearing Tess’s last name.
Awwww…. I wanted to see what happened when the hunted trio gang met up with Erin…. Oh well, I guess I will stick with the OTHER member of the floof squad and his floofy friend… I’m surprised Red chose not to explain Kendal’s backstory onscreen, but that would take up a lot of panels, and he’s already explained it a couple times. (And it leaves us wondering how much he revealed) (whoever came up with the name floof squad, it fits perfectly)
Silver Star:
Agreed
Indigo Toxin:
I couldn’t come up with anything, so I just decided on this name randomly, and it seems to fit! (SO that’s why it seemed off to me! Different art style)
Evil Tree:
I am really curious to what extent Kendal explained things, since it happened off screen. He is a pretty trusting guy, and Dainix seems really chill, but he might also be a little cautious when it comes to Erin’s predicament. Also I’m curious whether Kendal told him mostly because his people are monster hunters, but if there is also a little, “we are stuck in this together, might as well tell each other our darkest, deepest secrets, and our entire backstories and become best buds forever”. Unless the arenamaster gets a hold of one of the others, I have a feeling there is no way those two are gonna fight (unless they leverage Dainix’s freedom, I love it when they do jailed buddy fights, under the threat of some sort of leverage (kidnapped loved one, freedom, etc.) (there is probably a shorter name for the trope, but I don’t know it)
@IndigoToxin
I chose my name mostly because I like cats, so it was pretty obvious.
Also, hath we TWO new protagonists to join the Floof Gang? (is that what it’s called? I keep forgetting)
In case you couldn’t tell, I’m talking about Tess and Dainix, that might have been a bit unclear. Tess ’cause she got them into trouble and also Erin is maybe related to her (I’m still shocked, btw). Dainix because they learned about Kendal’s whole deal, which even Erin didn’t learn right away. Then again, Dainix also has their own thing happening, so I’m not sure. Still, though.
And the correct prediction turns out to be B! Congrats to those who guessed we would go back to these two himbos. But now it’s time to go ahead and predict: What happens now?
A: Dainix and Kendal get into another deep conversation?
B: The Arenamaster decides to bring them out early to fight?
C: Caliban finally decides to visit them personally?
D: The Crime Trio thought “Screw it, if some of us are being hunted by the authorities, then we all should be hunted by the authorities.”?
Indigo Toxin: I got my name from what one of my OC’s is.
My beautiful calm boys! It’s been a while since we’ve seen chill philosophical prison talk.
Ah, Kendal, always the optimist. I just hope your optimism doesn’t get everyone killed…
Indigo Toxin:
I first gave myself my alias a few years ago when I first got it into my head that I wanted to create video games. At the time, the ideas for what I wanted to create were a lot more vague and fuzzy, so I decided to reflect that in my alias. What I love about it is that its meaning changes over time; now that my concepts have solidified a lot more, the name is indicative of the fact that almost no one else knows about them, which will most likely stay true when I can finally start making and releasing them. However, if I can somehow beat the odds and see a significant amount of people find my creations when they’re out there, then my alias will become wonderfully ironic (since my games wouldn’t exactly be unknown anymore).
as for my username, it’s based on a bird I like similar to @goldfinch (goldfinches are great btw), but also a bit because personality: it’s a shy/skittish bird, so it seemed like a good fit for the semi-anonymous screen name of someone who is shy & introverted IRL.
Also, I bet that Dainix is going to totally project his issues with Caliban onto Vash and Kendal and be really surprised when the rest of the Floof Squad is like “No, Vash does care about him. He just doesn’t seem to have a self-preservation instinct”.
It’s giving “bro, you have a destiny that it seems impossible to fulfil but it’s your one purpose and you must do it for the good of others? Bro… me too bro”
@Stark9865: I agree, I’m definitely sensing some parallels and foiling in the works about missions put onto champions by their gods, especially considering the conversation between Caliban and Tahraim.
@Indigo Toxin: I used to be hyperobsessed with dragons (its waning slightly but still there); this was an old username but without the numbers following. Also, it was kind of cool seeing everyone’s justification for usernames… thanks for asking!
@Black Cat: honestly by this point its just “Floof [synonym for group of friends]”. I think I’ve referred to them by at least three different names at this point lol.
@HelloHaiku: “Papa Vash” awww :3
I didnt even think about the sword, but of course the guards would confiscate it. I wonder where they put it… in an armory somewhere? A weapons room? Does Zuurith have it?
I also forgot that Kendal doesnt know that ANY of this stuff has happened, from Falst & Alinua’s midnight almost-prison-break, to Erin’s humiliation at the Paladin archives, to Shrike, to Tess (wait does he even know she exists? I dont think they ever actually met ?), to ANYTHING. Hoo, that’s going to be a CONVERSATION.
@Indigo Toxin I’m a wannabe writer and in my first major project that went anywhere (one full rough draft of like 120k and some odd words), I named each of the 4 main characters after myself and 3 of my closest friends by remixing our full names into something more Fantasy sounding. Though, one of them was just his normal name backwards, since I couldn’t come up with a good remix, haha.
@Humanoid Clay, B- [Mr Brunner/Chiron]’s eyes had that mischievous glint they sometimes got in
class when he pulled a pop quiz and made all the multiple choice answers B.
@Indigo Toxin, couldn’t think of one so went for one that wasn’t subject specific, is a sort of meta joke and alows others to think of their own joke
@Stark9865, I think Dainix is gonna realise Caliban care’s about him soon enough when he gets that sword (though thats just my prediction- got no evidence for it)
@Indigo Toxin My username arose from a chat on Discord with my sister. She aways has weird names, so i tried to come up with someting random and combined my vegetarianism with my appreciation of snakes oth as animals and mythological symbols. @Indigo Toxin When I was in HS, I wore sunglasses all the time, so my friends started calling me Daddy Cool, but that name was taken, so I bastardized it enough to be different, yet still recognizable and I’ve used it everywhere ever since.
Thanks for asking the question, it led to a lot of interesting stories.
Regarding names: The idea of a dot posting comments somewhere tickled me, as well as the way it can be understood in multiple ways. Also, someone might call themselves “Stare” and start some jokes.
Great checking in on Prison Gang here. Kendal’s confidence wavers, but his determination stays firm.
To Indigo Toxin: Skye’s been a name I’ve been trying out for a while as a digital ID, and also the name of one of my writing characters (one of my protagonist’s daughters). I’ve actually debated using it as a nickname IRL, but it doesn’t quite feel right. Though that might be because I’m not really a nickname person, save for the one my extended family has used for me probably since birth (and they’re the only ones I allow to use that name) .Also, the only other nickname I’ve seriously considered is the one my cousin goes by, and has always gone by.
It’s true. He has a 0% failure rate against city-level threats. City-leveling threats? There’s a way to turn that into an organic pun, but instead, I’m off to bed.

Ha you are right!! That is going to be the most awkward conversation! I imagine it going something like “So what were you up to in jail.” “Oh I just made a best friend who hunts monsters for a living. You?” “Oh nothing much we just got in trouble with the entire city force of Zuurith, including a dangerous bounty hunter, wormed our way into the Paladin Archives who directly oppose the thing currently possessing Erin, discovered that the Light dragon is probably real, and that one of her followers who went in the storm became basically immortal, made friends with a metal caste woman who has lightning powers and is related to Erin, ya know, just a typical day”. oh Kendal 🙁 you’re probably right that Vash doesn’t want to connect to you right now 🙁 BUT IT’S NOT BECAUSE HE DOESN’T BELIEVE IN YOU it’s because he cares and wants to protect you from the Collector
oh my god i think i figured it out, sorry I’m starting this series late but I’m
‘m pretty sure that the woman who wrote the text is the collector and the white dragon is actually life, which explains why the dark dragon was scared of life, and also means he was right about it being impossible that there is another dragon, there isn’t another dragon it’s just one of the primordials that somehow survived and has found someone to do their work for them

Huh. I guess Dainx is in the know, now. Cool.
Also, Kendal. Have you considered that maybe you can only properly talk to him if you’re asleep?
Kendal takes the L
Can’t connect with Papa Vash
…Not all hope is lost
Aaand we’re back to Kendal and Dainix! It would seem that Kendal has been explaining to Dainix who and what he is off-screen.
He was trying to protect you, ya dummy
Why hello there. For once, Kendal is NOT the one causing trouble.
You know the plot has gone off the deep end when the existential crisis speedrunner is the most emotionally stable part of the plot
Awww, the power of cute should let him win
Back with da BOIS!
True!
The art style looks slightly different from the last time we saw them both. Neat!
Also out of curiosity, how did everyone pick their usernames? (Aside from obvious ones like Hellohaiku)
My user name is the name of my OC, she’s the next head of the family with a long line of poison making
Yup I went to double check. The artsyle is different
Still waiting to see that bastard of the Arenamaster, it’s been almost two months since Red teased him on twitter…
Kendal doing the classic old overthinking and blaming himself.
Next time Kendal picks up the sword he’ll find several unread messages, mostly along the lines of “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! TYNAN IS RIGHT THERE! QUIT THE PRISON TEA PARTY AND GET OUT!”.

Oh kandel you hopeful and fluffy optimist…
@indigo toxin
I chose my username because I love ancient history and found this name (it’s Greek) I liked it and have used it for my online presence ever since.
Physically tired today. No comment.
@indigo toxin
My username is because I could not decide which dragon was cuter.
Dainix’s cloth eyepatch looks badass. Wonder if the sketches have anything have to say about it

Love the artwork, great job red.
i chose mine bc i love spiders and i’m RELATIVELY harmless
it’s my username almost everywhere.
The comments today are honestly just a real gift to humanity
@Indigo Toxin When I was in HS, I wore sunglasses all the time, so my friends started calling me Daddy Cool, but that name was taken, so I bastardized it enough to be different, yet still recognizable and I’ve used it everywhere ever since.

My name is because i have a round scar on one wrist and a line scar on the other in the same place
@Indigo Toxin
I have an OC named Sunstorm, who is a budgie. Pretty simple.
i wonder how the gadiator efects the plot
It’s true. He has a 0% failure rate against city-level threats. City-leveling threats? There’s a way to turn that into an organic pun, but instead, I’m off to bed.
@IndigoToxin this is my internet universal username, a acronym i do not want to put in while i am typing on a chromebook in ELA 😉
Indigo Toxin:
I really appreciate you asking that question, it’s a lot of fun to get to know more about you guys!!! This comic and the comments section is definitely my happy place, and I really appreciate y’all!!

Oh and @humaniod clay, either A or C I think
@indigo toxin, My name is just a joke name of a nation from the book series Wings of Fire
Thanks for all the replies to my question. It’s really neat!
Also @Humanoid Clay C
@Indigo toxin I chose my name because I read a LOT (maybe too much) and like cats. I’ve used this for several now inactive profiles
@Indigo toxin My name is pretty self-explanatory, but I classify Clifford the big red dog as my admittedly vague definition of a kaiju.
Does Kendal need his SmartEdge to call Vash? Has Vash just put Kendal on PsyMail? Has Dainix been able to put Kendal’s self esteem issues into remission? How long have the two of them been sharing wholesome bonding time? Will the two of them soon be informed of the fight they’ll be forced to partake in? Will the Arenamaster be able to convince them to actually fight if he offers them a bag of Temptations cat treats?
