Man, Rakhn got messed up by Stefan’s beam attack.
I like how affable the wyrm and Rakhn are, calling a truce while still trading jabs. Goes to show how long they’ve been doing this song and dance.
My interpretation was that he got messed up by Tess’ blast into the ground. Stephan’s attack seemed like it mostly hit Alinua’s tree, but perhaps it’s both!
I love when gods have this kind of dynamic. It’s such a weird vibe and yet it fits so well with the “sometimes we’re just at the god party together, sometimes we wage divine war upon one another, it’s just how it is” feel of some actual mythology.
It’s cool that the state of Rakhan’s body reflects the state of the actual volcano what with it being broken and oozing lava. I wonder if that damage is mostly from the eruption or if some of it was from paladin guy’s (Stefan?) beam attack.
I think Stefan, the paladin guy’s beam attack is the main reason Rakhan is broken up. Rakhan’s eruption was not a threat to the Volcano Ignans shelter, but Stefans beam very nearly collapsed the whole thing.
Caliban herself confirmed it didnt he? “the attack would have collapsed the shelter complex if he aimed a hair further west”, its definitly stefan’s fault
I can’t wait to read some Aurora fanfic once ao3 is back.
Also I don’t know if I can explain what about this dynamic I like so much, but it’s great.

Anyone want to take bets on if “You’ll know when I awaken” is going to end up becoming a deus ex machina at the end of the comic? Because personally to me it feels like it would be really cool if our heroes were in big trouble and we see a volcano eruption in the distance and Rahkn comes and it could be a cool moment where ALL the friends made along the way appear to help and I’m just rambling Im sorry
nah for all their power Rakhn and the wyrm are still nature gods and we’ve seen what happens when nature gods go too far from their real bodies(ilia) so the same principle still applies, in fact that whole point of Rakhn is that he cant go anywhere(because he is a volcanic island in the middle of nowhere, ocean) so he is perpetually bored
You know, I genuinely thought the rivalry between these two was entirely on Rakhn’s side. It’s actually nice to see that it goes both ways instead of a Joker-Batman or Megatron-Optimus Prime kind of way.
Same, he seemed like the kinda guy to take something personally when it wasn’t intended that way, but I guess they HAVE been fighting for so long they’ve come to respect each other. And Rakhn checking “You’re not going to hurt my friend’s friends, are you?” ant trusting the Northern Wyrm to protect them is so sweet.
my cat keeps walking across my keyboard as I’m trying to read this. I can only assume she has strong opinions about today’s page and wants to leave a comment but unfortunately she’s not a very good typer :/
Good to see that Rakhn is not fighting a war without reason.
But I do wonder when we’ll hear it playing in our heads while reading this comic. You can think otherwise, but I think it’s inevitable.
Northern Wyrm and Rakhn meet on shore
Icy sea and burning mountain’s war
Godly form has changed since they last fought
Hasn’t been at her best, he shares that lot
Torn, from his side molten lava flows
Mountain will recover after a doze
Are they safe in her care, the coterie
Repaying her debt. Only you need fear me.
Edges of vessel into ashes flake
See you in my nightmares, you’ll know when I wake.
Oh, looks like those two have *history*
if i didn’t read the previous chapters, i’d think this guy is mostly armless
*slaps knee*

Or maybe it’s from erupting, he was rather unmarred when he notified Falst that he was going to go boom.
I doubt the Volcano God would be damaged by erupting.
I see this as his avatar has been spent and is starting to fall apart, not that any one attack did this.
Does anyone else think it should be illegal for Lord Stefan to just go around blasting away at gods like that… oh, wait
Aw, they’re friends.
Y’know, in that “I hate you and I can’t live without you” sort of way.
Better a reliable enemy than an unreliable ally
Funny that a volcano would make a reliable enemy
Oh, sure. Volcanoes don’t move much. And you know how they’re gonna react when they get angry.
It’s kismesis I think

*cough* Greeks *cough cough*
This page might be the coolest thing ever
They’re straight-up best enemies, aren’t they?

Well Rakhn’s the god of the volcano itself, not the ignans, so I think it’s more because Stefan’s bweem blew a hole in the side of the mountain

“The coterie of the Blade” eh? Rakhan, don’t you know they’re called The Floof Sqaud?
From merriam-webster.com:
coterie (noun)
an intimate and often exclusive group of persons with a unifying common interest or purpose
Reading the page, I asumed it meant someting along those lines. And then I checked with merriam-webster before comenting.
But thank you
their unifying interest is having floofy hair
Vampire: the Masquerade AU, anyone?
Ahh, one of those mortal enemies budding romances? 😁
I would be SO here for that
For mobile readers.

A scratch?! His arm’s off!

Bluesky text: smell you later, old friend

Definitely getting some Trazyn and Orikan vibes from them.
Placeholder for when I’m awake enough to form real thoughts
We love us some godly frenemis
Good morning everyone. How we feeling?
Just kiss already jeez

I’m very reminded of how Red summarized the dynamic between Pele and Kama’pua as them hating each other but also needing each other.
“Now kith.”

I’ve shipped stranger for less
See you in my nightmares. So gods do sleep.
Or at the very least, volcanoes do
Well, looking at the state of him and his mountain, he needs time to recover, so it’s time for the volcano to take a nap.
I love the contrast between them in that first panel! And I just now noticed that i’ve been sailing a Ship I didn’t know existed until this page
something of a BDSM vibe, hmm, not quite, professional wrestling maybe
Like it’s play, no real enmity, a friendship even,
Good to see that Rakhn is not fighting a war without reason.

Winter-Bringer
Chaos-Shard
(jus’ tryin’ out shippin’ names)
One page and their relationship is deepened twelve-fold, incredible.
I love their love-hate relationship. “Please tell me you’re okay, I’m not ready to stop kicking your arse!”
Hey! Look!
Fireboy and Watergirl finally escaped those temples!
Look at them all grown up bickering like an old married couple.
Is this how gods flirt?
Exhibit A: Sennaia/Shanyasi.
and they were ROOMMATES
“I will appreciate your company in my nightmares” Oh MAN that goes hard
Just because you hate someone down to the core of your existence doesn’t mean you can’t be polite.
this is great. this is giving “our natures are in opposition, but i actually think you’re a cool dude”
Sidenote, i really can’t wait for Kendal to have a long conversation with the head paladin honcho about how disappointed he is with their behavior
Murder-soulmates, got it!
I love to see mutual respect and even comaraderie between enemies. Fun dynamic!

Awww, rhey have more friends and protection. Gods know they need it, literally
“Screw you and I’ll see you next decade!”
