. Erin curls up slightly, eyes wide, face drawn and pale in the dim, cold light of his spells. “I think you’ll find it far worse than any fanged nightmare in the dark.”

. Erin screams, long and loud, jolting back and the fire runes around his arm flickering with his shock as the gray mermaid Selach pops up in front of him, a cheerful grin on her face.
I’m going to start putting gods’ words in bold, because that’s closer to how I have it in my document, and it’ll help with differentiating speakers. Without the “this is __ deity” bold/highlight, it can sometimes be unclear who’s talking.

Or: Erin’s fright and surprise breaks his concentration, the fire spell goes out (and with it all the light) and Walter takes control. Meaning Selach is in terrible danger

Also I’m glad Red found a chance to address the inherent fear of the whole situation. the discussion between Erin and the Void Dragon being a lot of fun to read. If the Void Dragon doesn’t like solitude does that mean there is life in outerspace, if so it does explain an aspect of the Dragon’s personality, if the VD was used to being alone than he wouldn’t be this conversational, being able to toy with people and muse on their perspectives, so does that mean he used to interact with people or victims before he was imprisoned.
Interesting that Walter doesn’t like being alone. I was under the impression that, prior to his imprisonment, everything was either something to consume or something getting in the way of consuming. Not that I thought his confinement was a lark, but I thought the worst of it to him would be the confinement, not the solitude.
Does he miss the hunt? Did he actually spend time chatting with potential prey? Did other stars he consumed have other primordials who allowed their suns to be consumed in exchange for their own lives? Did he spend a little time socializing with these others before searching out another target?
And if the Lady is his other, what was she doing while he was eating stars? Did she help the primordials trap him? I need backstory!
I still find it ironic that the Void that consumes all Light is afraid of being in the dark nothingness alone, forever. Feels like something that maybe leveraged later, hm?

Also I can’t help but imagine how jarring that must’ve been for Erin. We got a whole lot of warning this would happen, but he went from grimly holding on, balancing the threat of possesion if he fell unconscious with the imminent dangers of the sea, to “Hi!” 😀 *wave*
The last panel feels like it could be a meme. I’m not the best with memes but you see it. Though I was honestly expecting Alinua to be the one saving Erin. Still, Selach can still turn around and yell “I found him!” And then Alinua can show up and give him a hug. Or a slap, actually, given how they left. She is the only one he hasn’t apologized to yet. Or a “where the fuck is Kendal”. Loved this page.
It’s a good thing that Erin is immersed in water right now because I imagine he would’ve peed himself at that moment.
Is Erin slowly sinking down or is he maintaining his depth level? Also does his magic keeping the air bubble around his head prevent carbon dioxide and oxygen from diffusing in and out of the water?
I think Red once explained how that works in Aurora. There is no oxigen or carbon dioxide, just different forms of “wind”. Ok I checked and Red says there is no meaningful amount of wind floating around in water, so I think diffusion just doesn’t happen in this world.
Depending on how deep he is, the pressure may be enough that he’s just suspended in place and won’t go anywhere unless he actively tries to swim up or down.

All of this Walter talk has really made me feel Lasciel / Lash thoughts. For those not familiar with the Dresden Files, the main character (Harry) gets possessed by a fallen angel named Lasciel, who is trapped within a magic coin and wants Harry to free her. However, it’s revealed that the entity that is talking in Harry’s head is more of a… shadow, a piece-of-Lasciel instead of the full thing. While they start out as enemies, eventually Harry starts showing sympathy towards her. He gives her a new name (Lash), she starts helping him and opening up about her own fears / worries (there’s this great scene of them in a church where she is talking about missing home (Heaven) and not being able to return because she’s a Fallen).
I do wonder if something similar is going to go on here with Voidy, or if my feelings of “Erin is my favorite character” and “the scenes of him talking with Walter are some of my favorite in the entire comic” is biasing me haha. We shall see!
One wonders if they could use the power of friendship to make the Void Dragon less intent on eating everything. It doesn’t seem to be strictly necessary for him to live, or he’d presumably be dead by now. If he’s actually gotten lonely… that might be an opening for him to start to want to change.
So I was watching the Aurora Special OSPodcast, and at [40:30], Red mentions getting the name “hryd” for a potential character from a typing error, but not actually knowing what that error was, other than the hand was typing at the wrong place.
My theory for how the error could have occurred was that it was the word “gets”, but typed one key to the right, so g=h, e=r t=y, and s-d. Same pattern, as well as requiring only one hand to be miss played.

Gee Mr. Dark Primordial of Hunger sitting in a dark prison, I wonder why the guy you’re possessing to end the world would fear hungry things in the dark? In all seriousness though it’s interesting to get more insight on just how much the Void Dragon sees the isolation of his imprisonment as the worst element with Erin as the first person he’s been able to talk to for centuries. Especially since it is carrying Voidy that has exacerbated Erin’s feeling of having to ultimately be able to shoulder things alone despite having friends beside him to aid him.
So guys, I was was rereading Arc 2 for what must have been the 90th time, and I always check the numbe of comments for particularly exciting or funny or whatever pages. Anyways, I *think* I linked it in my username (I don’t actually know how to do it but I tried) the most comment for a page I think are on page 2.4.44 and at 334 comments. Just. Wow.
So I’ve been rereading some old pages, and assuming that the void dragon really is telling the truth about not liking being alone in his prison, I wonder if that is loneliness is part of what led to the creation of the light dragon aspect.
Erin hypothesized in 2.6.16 that the Light Dragon didn’t exist back when the primordials fought, as otherwise Fire would have transmuted Void’s attacks into light and Void wouldn’t have been so surprised when Dainix did the same. We also know that the light dragon DID exist is some form by the time humanity was created, as it was the one who granted life free will, so it couldn’t have somehow been caused by people worshipping the Light Dragon and causing it to manifest into being. And, as Tahraim suggested in 2.3.37, Void’s conceptual form may not be so much physical hunger (as even the Void Dragon himself seems to think) as it is a more neutral hunger that might better be described as “desire”.
So my theory is that for eons, as Void went around eating stars, all that motivated him was this physical consumption. But when he was imprisoned, he for the first time desired something else: the companionship of another individual. When a being that embodied the idea of desire had the desire of there being another being like itself, it caused a part of Void to “split of” and become more attuned to the idea of the unique desires of a unique individual; e.g. free will. That also explains how and why it granted free will to mortals: it did so because it was built around the idea of desiring companionship, and it created that companionship by giving otherwise lifeless puppets their own desires. It also could explain why the material form of the Light Dragon’s power is, you know, light (like how Fire embodied the concept of transformation but also material fire). This page explains that Void sees the darkness of his prison as connected with it’s solitude (“The darkness of my prison is… Alone”), so by contrast he associates companionship with light, and that association was built into the Light Dragon.
I have no idea if that theory is true, or if it even totally makes sense. One of the problems is that the mental effects of Light Magic (specifically, the Diadems in 2.3.9 and the mind reading Stefan attempted in 2.8.8) seem to be actually interfacing with the mind itself, rather than merely the “desires” that mind has, so the theory could definitely use some work at the very least. Still, I was sort of surprised myself about how well this tied together otherwise, and at the very least it could inspire future theorizing.

You know, if Voidy wasn’t alone in space, this is lending some credence to the stars-are-soul-generators theory i’ve been waiting for an opening to share in the comments. (basically, soul energy just kinda accumulates on the planet’s surface, which sounds like fantasy solar power to me, and we’ve had it confirmed that soulfire is NOT fire, so… maybe?)

Also what are Selach’s pronouns? Also, also, do they only have four fingers? Is it just them?
Merfolk don’t really care about gender and don’t have any dimorphism in their species, however, they know gender is a thing the elder races care about, so they all use she/they pronouns because, to the elder races, they all look vaguely female. So you can call Selach she or they.
And yes, merfolk have four fingers while the Sekrai (an elder race) have five.

Gee Mr. Dark Primordial of Hunger sitting in a dark prison, I wonder why the guy you’re possessing to end the world would fear hungry things in the dark? In all seriousness though it’s interesting to get more insight on just how much the Void Dragon sees the isolation of his imprisonment as the worst element with Erin as the first person he’s been able to talk to for centuries. Especially since it is carrying Voidy that has exacerbated Erin’s feeling of having to ultimately be able to shoulder things alone despite having friends beside him to aid him.

So guys, I was was rereading Arc 2 for what must have been the 90th time, and I always check the numbe of comments for particularly exciting or funny or whatever pages. Anyways, I *think* I linked it in my username (I don’t actually know how to do it but I tried) the most comment for a page I think are on page 2.4.44 and at 334 comments. Just. Wow.

So I’ve been rereading some old pages, and assuming that the void dragon really is telling the truth about not liking being alone in his prison, I wonder if that is loneliness is part of what led to the creation of the light dragon aspect.
Erin hypothesized in 2.6.16 that the Light Dragon didn’t exist back when the primordials fought, as otherwise Fire would have transmuted Void’s attacks into light and Void wouldn’t have been so surprised when Dainix did the same. We also know that the light dragon DID exist is some form by the time humanity was created, as it was the one who granted life free will, so it couldn’t have somehow been caused by people worshipping the Light Dragon and causing it to manifest into being. And, as Tahraim suggested in 2.3.37, Void’s conceptual form may not be so much physical hunger (as even the Void Dragon himself seems to think) as it is a more neutral hunger that might better be described as “desire”.
So my theory is that for eons, as Void went around eating stars, all that motivated him was this physical consumption. But when he was imprisoned, he for the first time desired something else: the companionship of another individual. When a being that embodied the idea of desire had the desire of there being another being like itself, it caused a part of Void to “split of” and become more attuned to the idea of the unique desires of a unique individual; e.g. free will. That also explains how and why it granted free will to mortals: it did so because it was built around the idea of desiring companionship, and it created that companionship by giving otherwise lifeless puppets their own desires. It also could explain why the material form of the Light Dragon’s power is, you know, light (like how Fire embodied the concept of transformation but also material fire). This page explains that Void sees the darkness of his prison as connected with it’s solitude (“The darkness of my prison is… Alone”), so by contrast he associates companionship with light, and that association was built into the Light Dragon.
I have no idea if that theory is true, or if it even totally makes sense. One of the problems is that the mental effects of Light Magic (specifically, the Diadems in 2.3.9 and the mind reading Stefan attempted in 2.8.8) seem to be actually interfacing with the mind itself, rather than merely the “desires” that mind has, so the theory could definitely use some work at the very least. Still, I was sort of surprised myself about how well this tied together otherwise, and at the very least it could inspire future theorizing.
