One theory I’ve had for why Caliban told them they HAD to steal the Fireseed is as a safeguard for potential future incidents of Dainix burning out – after all, it’s likely the gang won’t always be conveniently close to a volcano when that happens.
Not that Caliban would care to simply reveal this information…
. Dainix stares down the stairs as the doors slam shut. He slowly raises his fist and puts it against his chest, mimicking the salute the Ignan made, but his gaze is melancholy.
. An explosion of coughing makes Dainix startle. He rushes over to where Falst is on hands and knees on the rock, kneeling next to the Ferin. “Steady!” he says, hand on Falst’s back. “Slow, deep breaths. Don’t try to stand.” Falst continues coughing, shivering. “I can’t believe you went inside an active– and where did you get THAT?” he asks, noticing the blue scarf in Falst’s hand.
. “That lying WEASEL!” Falst snarls, gasping.
. “Huh?? Falst, what–?”
. “Oh, there’s–” Falst is interrupted by a cough again– “there’s NO OTHER way, it HAS to be the Fireseed, so YOU need to rob a VOLCANO while YOU fight a GOD– Kendal!” Falst realizes, eyes widening as he remembers Kendal’s job in this plan.
Absolutely valid reaction, Falst, I’d be pissed too
I really want Kendal and Rakhn to be having tea when Falst and Dainix arrive

Ooh, the lettering for the cough is different ! Usually, the lettering is reserved for onomatopoeia, which is a bit transparent and lineless (as in first panel of this page), while non-word sounds made by people would be contained in speech bubbles (like in the first panel 2.4.38, which is nearly identical to the coughing fit Falst is having here). I love it, it looks so good !
I’m not so sure it was a goose chase. It’s possible they didn’t know, or the Fire Seed would have worked but also had some kind of power bump involved. Plus keep in mind Falst still had to take Dainix’s rock into the volcano to wake him up so it would’ve been a half lie, anyway.
I am assuming that its not a goose chase, of course the fireseed would have worked to revive him, but I think that Dainex dropping into lava would also have worked, since the fireseed draws in fire energy to try and reform primodial Fire, so the lava around volcanoes might have enough force and heat to reignite Dainex’s core

Dainix seems confused as to who and what Falst is talking about, so evidently he didn’t get debriefed. His first and only concern was probably shepherding Falst to safety and out of the toxic fumes… I wonder what’s going through his head in panel 2? Thinking of his people back home as they leave behind the volcanic ignans, perhaps? Feeling guilty that Falst put himself in harm’s way to help him?
Maybe they’ll find Kendal chatting peaceably with Rakhn, and maybe they’ll feel a little better then…

Its surreal to finally be reading weekly as this releases instead of binging through in large sections like I have been for the last few months lol. Anyways love this and I’m so excited for what comes next with Falst and Dainix

I finally realized what’s been tugging at my brain for the last few years… Caliban and Tahraim’s plan for Dainix has the same feel as the kind of dubious plans I want my own fantasy world’s godlings to have for mortal heroes. Awareness, understanding, and consent optional, compliance not so much. Although I’m sure Tahraim and Caliban will wind up being less heartless than they currently appear!
You know, it’s gonna be *really* funny if Alinua busts outta the sea being like “WHERE’S KENDAL” only to find out the Wyrm’s idea of horrible danger is an amiable conversation with a temperamental volcano god who has the mental maturity of a 6-year-old.

It’s more obvious now, but the formatting schemes and dialogue font changed slightly last chapter, likely for the ease of the print edition.
I think I’m gonna have to go back and do some re-reading…
