You know, just noticed this, but the entire squad (maybe aside from Erin) doesn’t know anything about the Paladins. They don’t even know who the paladins are. Anyone else noticed this too? I’m just thinking about it because the champion thinks Kendal is a construct thingy, so what do you think the paladins will think of him?
. “But you have indulged me for too long, I think,” Rakhn says. “Has your strength returned?”
. “A little.” Kendal shifts, pushing himself up and climbing out of the shallow crater. “But you’re calling us even sooner than I expected.”
. “Do not think me too generous,” Rakhn says with a grin. “I’ve much enjoyed both the conversation and the duel. I hope you will consider returning for a second round of either or both. But when you offered to entertain me, you were seeking the safety of your allies.” Rakhn points toward the horizon, and Kendal follows his gaze. “Now, in turn, I believe something is seeking you.”
. “Their size and number are unclear, but they are airborne and impressively fast.” Dozens of tiny, winged shapes shadow the horizon, growing bigger by the minute. “And their trajectory has become unmistakable.”
. “At this rate, I believe I actually owe you, godling,” Rakhn says with a chuckle. “You’ve brought me far more entertainment than I bargained for.”
. “It looks like I have,” Kendal says, staring at the horizon with sword held by his side. “I just hoped there’d be more time.”
This might actually end up being their ticket to Helm. Maybe Erin will push the squad to surrender and try to diplomacy his way out of the Paladins’ stronghold, because he thinks their leaders will be more open to it than Tam was. Would also be a quick callback zu Zuurith, where Kendal thought Erin would try exactly that with Zuurith. It would probably end up going as well with the Septrenn as it would have with Zuurith… but at least they’d be on Helm now!
Rule 63 is the genderbend rule, stating something along the lines of “for any given character, there exists a gender swapped version of that character”.
In my experience, it tends to generalize to “given a character, there exists a version as every possible gender”, although non-nb to nb tends to be significantly rarer (assuming the most exclusive definition of nb I would consider reasonable – a less exclusive definition would obviously encompass more examples).
I wonder if the volcano Ignans have some spare gas masks the team could use to hide out in the volcano.
Because those guys are NOT up for a fight yet (Erin’s on Magic Overload Bedrest, Dainix JUST got unrockified, Falst’s got a bit of Volcano Smoke Inhalation Poisoning, Kendal JUST fought ANOTHER god, Alinua’s still a fish, and no matter what Tess would say, there is no possible way for her to take that entire paladin army by herself).
I guess we can start taking bets on whether the Paladins believe in negotiations or in “carpet bomb first, ask questions never” when it comes to Voidy.
The carpet-bombing approach could really work against them in this situation, considering that it could put the local residents in danger, and the local deity might take offense to that.
I’m going to guess “carpet bomb first, ask questions never” considering how Tam was fully ready to kill the entire floof squad as long as LD was willing to take responsibility
Rakhn: It’s moving fast … against the wind. Kendal: Paladins from the Snowfast!
FYI I’ve finally watched all the LotR movies after finishing the books a while back. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Fellowship movie, they were showing all three extended addition films, one day after another, in a cinema I frequent; I watched all of them fully with my brothers and a friend and we all loved it. Very tired after getting home close to midnight for three days in a row, but worth it.
Oh boy, I was expecting maybe two or three patrol dragons in the Paladin’s search party, not this many. Then again I shouldn’t really be surprised; they’ve had time to prepare their forces, they got a confirmed sighting near the Rakhn landmark, and, if their finest warrior was bested, they need to send as many as they can.
Then again, Rakhn’s words about entertainment makes me wonder how much of that force is for finding Erin, and how much is meant to distract Rakhn himself. The Paladins must be aware that bringing such a large force, that could be read as an invasion, towards a notoriously volatile god is not to be taken lightly.
Plus there’s the question of what Kendal does now, since he doesn’t know where the others are, nor is in the best condition for a fight.
Congrats on watching through all of that. Defo worth it.
It’s rather impressive that they managed to mobilize this many in the span of an afternoon. Then again, the Snowfast is likely somewhere on Helm so Rakhn is only a stone’s throw away.
I think that most of the dragons will be sweeping the area. So long as they don’t venture too close to the volcano, I think they’ll be fine. Plus, it’s reasonable for them to assume that Erin wouldn’t shelter in the volcano, both because of Rakhn and the simple fact that non-ignan humans can’t survive in the Rakhnans’ environment.
That is a horrendous number of dragons! …so what IS a bevvy of dragons called? Maybe it’s breath-weapon dependent, like a ‘crackle’ of lightning dragons – or a ‘blizzard’ of ice dragons and a ‘holocaust’ of fire?
*Weyr 🙂 A weir is a dam. (Aaaaaand now I realize I’ve been mentally pronouncing it wrong for 40 years…)=
A “Wing” would be a Platoon, a “Flight” would be Company; a “Weyr” would be a Battalion.
At least in Army terms. I don’t speak Air Force…”One Squadron, Two Squadrons, Many”?
Okay, I need to start off on the right foot here, thank you so much for starting this fun thread about plural nouns for Dragons! I never really thought about that before! I just…umm…uhhh…I want to say a word of caution…mayyyybe we shouldn’t be throwing in the h-word when the topic is Dragon plural nouns. No harm done, I think, but that’s also a very singular word, I think, that really shouldn’t get bleached, although I definitely have my biases in that regard. Although that also has me thinking: what else would a breath-weapon-derived plural noun for fire Dragons be? Hmm…ooh, I like inferno! Oh, and water Dragons could be a torrent! Thanks again!
Rakhn is SO dang sexy to me. Lol as soon as that beard fell away to reveal a huge, strong, perpetually curious individual, I was HOOKED (dam_it, Red! You just drew my husband [but irl he’s bald and fully bearded] – how could you expect anything But that I’d fall for this dude!)
I suspect leading a small army into a gods domain to kill/kidnap their guests would be the sort of significant breech of diplomatic etiquette that a god as bellicose as Rakhn would be quite keen to respond to violently.
…If it weren’t for the chapter cover, my money would be on “I have an army” “We have a god of the Northern Waters who owes someone a favour AND also has an army.”
Guys, guys. You’re all talking about the Paladins when there’s someone else on their way looking for Kendal. Have you forgotten that The Collector has already been established as being on her way? And that she’s more than capable of making Tri-Jawed Birds?
Except some of the silhouettes on panel 5 have the same underslung palanquins we saw Tam getting carried on suggesting they’re probably paladin dragons.
Also from a narrative standpoint it seems too early to have a direct confrontation with the big bad of the story.
These are good points, but a)Some of the Chimeras could be carrying others whose bodies aren’t suited to sprouting wings (Think of a tank being carried by a plane or something), and b) Kendal and co. could be forced to sneak away in a hurry (maybe with Merid support) while Rakhn and his people distract her. After all, she doesn’t have a homing beacon or anything, just word of “They went that way”.
That was my very first thought before checking comments & going “oh you guys are probably right about being paladins”.
Unsure which I’d prefer! But I really hope it helps Rakhn and the Wyrm get temporarily on the same side. He’d have a fight AND THEN ALSO a potential cool friend to talk to after the floof gang vanish! <3
doubt the collector is there, the collector’s goal(free the life primordial) and the paladins’s goal(stop the void dragon from being freed) are very much mutually exclusive and i doubt the paladins would trust a chimeramaker like her unless they dont have other options
DM: Just a sec, lemme roll a d100 real quick…
Player 1 (Kendal): Cool, random encounter!
DM: okay, that’s. an 85. No, wait, sorry, 58.
Player 2 (Tess): Sick, I needed ten more XP for eighth level!
DM: A swarm of what looks like 58 dragons appears on the horizon, several glowing with a white-blue light.
Player 1: …
Player 2: HECK YEAH!
Wow, Kendal looks so cool in the sixth panel! Also, in the fourth panel, it’s “airborne” as in “carried by the air” and not “airborn” as in “born of the air”…though I’m not discounting that that’s a possibility.
kendal has had a lot of really good panels lately. in panel 6 he looks amazing and two pages ago when he was lying down he got to really show off how long and thick his hair is
I guess we know what the Northern Wyrm was talking about now. I do feel that this is going to quickly turn into a surrender, because there is no way that this battered Floof Squad is going to be able to put up that much of a fight. Tess and Dainix are probably the only people healthy enough to get into an actual fight, and Alinua isn’t even there. I do think it would be cool for Kendal to show off his new self-preservation skills.
i doubt the paladins would accept a surrender, their goal is to kill erin to stop the void dragon, not to show off to everyone how cool they are for doing so, also idk if rakhn will stand idly, he did say that he almost owes kendal given how entertaining keeping him on the island has been and fighting a battle that big certainly will be something new and fun for him(also alinua probably already solved the northern wyrm issue so she should arrive soon, maybe even with a bit of help
Are those silhouettes paladins, or are those the Collector and her chimeras? I’m inclined to think paladins given the white light on the cover art and the fact that Tess just mentioned them. But Kendal got that “SHE’S COMING” warning from Vash a few chapters ago, and we know the Collector is after Kendal specifically while the paladins are more after Erin. ‘Course, Rakhn could’ve meant “you” as in “you and your friends”…
Trouble’s brewing either way. The Floof Squad just can’t catch a break.
I’m just choosing to believe that’s Brian Blessed and the Hawkmen coming to save Flash Gordon who just so happens to be held at some point DIRECTLY behind the volcano.
Hey, what about how Kendal is extra visible to gods? Does that also apply to LD and by extension the paladins? Cuz if that’s true, I’m guessing he won’t want reunite with Erin and the others just yet, since he’d be a beacon to the Floofs’ location. Also if Tess and Erin’s ‘secure-ish’ hideout is that same cave, and Tess had to get Falst and Dainix back there, I get the feeling they wouldn’t have time to grab Kendal. I’m really excited to see how this plays out – maybe we get an Alinua Kendal reunion!
No I don’t think Kendal is more visible to the LD since she had no idea who or what he was when he was immune to the Diadem due to having neither dragon in him. That being said I doubt he’s going to do anything but confront the problem head on if he doesn’t think he can find the others quickly enough.
LD isn’t a god, shes probably a primordial (or something similar). Primordials are a completely different thing than gods, rather than just super-gods, so i presume she wouldnt be able to see him in the same way gods can? Idk though
If the Stormdrake that Tess fought back in chapter 6 is with these guys, I really hope that they ignore Erin and make a beeline for Tess because they’re holding a grudge
Kendal looks…very, VERY ragged in panel 3. This scene reminds me of when Aang and the Chief of the Northern Water Tribe looked upon the Arctic horizon as the Fire Nation navy approached. Most people here probably understand that significance. I don’t think the Paladins will survive as an institution after the end of this comic unless they change their entire mission statement and demeanor, if that. This is the kind of behavior that reduces you to a legend.
Oooohhh, no…
Paladins?
Paladins…
My stomach actually dropped.. that’s a LOT of dragons
No Kidding

Tumblr Text: gooooooood morning!
Bluesky text: motivating myself to get out of bed and post this because it’s what kendal would do
You know, just noticed this, but the entire squad (maybe aside from Erin) doesn’t know anything about the Paladins. They don’t even know who the paladins are. Anyone else noticed this too?
“And their trajectory has become unmistakable.”

. “It looks like I have,” Kendal says, staring at the horizon with sword held by his side. “I just hoped there’d be more time.”
Ha… hahaha… haaa…
Oh no
That’s a lot of dragons, and they’re kinda stranded there far as I know. Probably better to not be on a boat anyway.
I’m counting a minimum of 45 little squiggle dot dragons. That’s definitely not concerning
It looks like some of them are carrying boats tied underneath them, so at least 45 dragons and a squad of paladins. They might need to run.
I counted 64.
Oh… oh no…
This might actually end up being their ticket to Helm.
Impressive. You don’t often see a character with motivation “I’m bored, entertain me” who is not a complete villain.
Also, I’d still like to see rule 63 of Rakhn in all the poses he takes in this comic (especially the last 3 pages).
Wait what’s rule 63?
Rule 63 is the genderbend rule, stating something along the lines of “for any given character, there exists a gender swapped version of that character”.
I wonder how that interacts with NB characters
In my experience, it tends to generalize to “given a character, there exists a version as every possible gender”, although non-nb to nb tends to be significantly rarer (assuming the most exclusive definition of nb I would consider reasonable – a less exclusive definition would obviously encompass more examples).
A female version of the character.
I immediately thought of “Rule 39: never say no to bacta.
That’s a reference maybe ONE person out there will get…
Well, Bacta is likely Star Wars. Given my history with the RPGs and cartoons, I’d wager it’s a quote from one of the many, many novels. Close?
I’m sure that’s fine and normal and nothing to worry about at all
They are just about to have a party that is all.
A VERY FUN party with people who are going to not have fun at the party.
Shoooooot
Get alinua up here for the heals, or maybe falst could make his bubble and they could go hide away from the flying enemies?
I wonder if the volcano Ignans have some spare gas masks the team could use to hide out in the volcano.
Because those guys are NOT up for a fight yet (Erin’s on Magic Overload Bedrest, Dainix JUST got unrockified, Falst’s got a bit of Volcano Smoke Inhalation Poisoning, Kendal JUST fought ANOTHER god, Alinua’s still a fish, and no matter what Tess would say, there is no possible way for her to take that entire paladin army by herself).
The Paladins really decided to bring everyone on the hunt didn’t they?
If it’s dragons they’re going to see Kendal and somehow befriend him
*Mr volcano pulls out popcorn*, “go on, go questing”
I guess we can start taking bets on whether the Paladins believe in negotiations or in “carpet bomb first, ask questions never” when it comes to Voidy.
You seem new here, I’ll put 5 million on carpet bombing.
Or his attitude could be unique. He seems to be tailor-made to be Erin’s reflection.
A whole flight of dragons. It’s like the entire Snowfast decided to pile on Rakhn.
Whoops. Pressed “post” before I was finished.
For that matter, I think we’re gonna see that Stormdrake that showed up back in the interludes. Now either sapient or possessed again by LD.
That is a horrendous number of dragons! …so what IS a bevvy of dragons called? Maybe it’s breath-weapon dependent, like a ‘crackle’ of lightning dragons – or a ‘blizzard’ of ice dragons and a ‘holocaust’ of fire?
…dang, but there are a lot of them!
It depends on which fiction to pull from. A flight, a weir… there’s options.
One, two, many, lots, FML
I’ve always been partial to a “Wing” of Dragons.
Ive seen a group of dragons called a ‘thunder’ of dragons
personally i’m partial to a “Storm” of dragons, myself
Okay, I need to start off on the right foot here, thank you so much for starting this fun thread about plural nouns for Dragons! I never really thought about that before! AH!! I love that comic!!
What comic? Is there a comic called as the light fades? I made it up as a title for a story of my own id like to write someday! xD
It must be dragon punching time…
gee, if only we had a party member known for that…
Dragonpuncher has been one of my favorite epithets for a long time
I wonder if Rakhn will fight any of them. I doubt it, but also it’d be pretty cool.
Are you kidding me? This is the best fight he’s probably had in his life.
I suspect leading a small army into a gods domain to kill/kidnap their guests would be the sort of significant breech of diplomatic etiquette that a god as bellicose as Rakhn would be quite keen to respond to violently.
He just triggers an eruption as they’re flying over
Oh **bleep**.
…If it weren’t for the chapter cover, my money would be on “I have an army” “We have a god of the Northern Waters who owes someone a favour AND also has an army.”
Options: Swim to Helm or go through the Singing Caves. I know which one I’d prefer.
I’d ask the volcano Ignans for a few spare gas masks and hide out in a random hole in the volcano.
It’ (probably) comparatively safer.
Guys, guys. You’re all talking about the Paladins when there’s someone else on their way looking for Kendal. Have you forgotten that The Collector has already been established as being on her way? And that she’s more than capable of making Tri-Jawed Birds?
OH S*IT YOU’RE RIGHT

She doesn’t even have that. All she has is “he exists and is all Vash has left”.
I stand firmly on she has no way of knowing where they are.
Though the coming battle may well change that…
Yes, I’m not too sure those are paladins….
being the collector would be awesome but the chapter cover heavily implied paladins
Aurora Question #58: Who do you think Kendal’s friends are?
Collector plus paladins at once? Maybe we can convince them to fight each other?

“I just thought there’d de more time.”
“So do all who lack key skills for planning ahead.”
I guess we know what the Northern Wyrm was talking about now. I do feel that this is going to quickly turn into a surrender, because there is no way that this battered Floof Squad is going to be able to put up that much of a fight. Typo: airborne not airborn
I’m just choosing to believe that’s Brian Blessed and the Hawkmen coming to save Flash Gordon who just so happens to be held at some point DIRECTLY behind the volcano.
oh my golly me, no one’s started this chain yet
Oh my golly me, your right
Oh my golly me, how did this become a thing?
kinda surprised it became a chain, I just wanted to gush over dainixlmao
Did someone say kaij- 100 KAIJU FIGHTS
Looks like they are about to have some unwanted guests.
I think it’s the paladins coming, because upon closer inspection I noted that some of the flying things have something just below them.
Well, I guess now we know what the Northern Wyrm was warning Alinua about…
Oooh boy. Is there a word for a group of dragons? Other than a GIANT PROBLEM, of course…
A Flight!
Ah, that would make sense, thank you!
I suppose that makes this the rare instance where you could get both fight AND flight at the same time!
Ive seen various plural nouns for dragons, but my personal favourite is a thunder of dragons!
Well, it’s either a crapload of dragons or the Collector has become airborne. Not sure which is worse, to be honest.
Hey, what about how Kendal is extra visible to gods? Does that also apply to LD and by extension the paladins? Cuz if that’s true, I’m guessing he won’t want reunite with Erin and the others just yet, since he’d be a beacon to the Floofs’ location. No I don’t think Kendal is more visible to the LD since she had no idea who or what he was when he was immune to the Diadem due to having neither dragon in him. “And he spoke one word of power: COME. And they came, all of them, even the dragons-“
Rakhan is definitely going to have a field day wrecking dragons.
If the Stormdrake that Tess fought back in chapter 6 is with these guys, I really hope that they ignore Erin and make a beeline for Tess because they’re holding a grudge
I have a BAD feeling about this.
oh wow I didn’t catch it the first time but that’s a LOT of paladins & dragons
Kendal looks…very, VERY ragged in panel 3. This scene reminds me of when Aang and the Chief of the Northern Water Tribe looked upon the Arctic horizon as the Fire Nation navy approached. Most people here probably understand that significance. I don’t think the Paladins will survive as an institution after the end of this comic unless they change their entire mission statement and demeanor, if that. This is the kind of behavior that reduces you to a legend.
