Alinua should low-key stop being surprised when Kendal is in danger. Girlypop he has the survival instincts of a dodo bird.

I missed the word “he” at first, and so thought “girlypop” referred to Kendal, which also works tbh.
To note further points to Dodos on survival instincts: they don’t charge into recognized peril either, they just didn’t see the traps to avoid.
There’s actually a lot of misinformation regarding the extinction of the Dodo Bird. They actually tasted pretty terrible and were only eaten as a last resort. The main agent of their extinction was all the invasive species that the colonizers brought with them—pigs and dogs for example—which would eat the Dodo’s eggs, whose nests were on the ground out in the open not because Dodos were stupid, but because they were literally flightless birds. The reason Dodos couldn’t defend against predation wasn’t because they had no sense of self preservation, but because they literally had not evolved any effective ways to fight back against these animals which were utterly novel to the whole ecosystem. Dodos’ extinction was due to no fault of their own but due to the carelessness of Portuguese sailors, who then went back and rubbed salt in the wound by painting Dodos as somehow deserving of their extinction. Which, disturbingly, is pretty much the same treatment colonizers gave to colonized *humans* as well.

I actually learned about this in an ornithology class, but I couldn’t think of another animal with stereotypically bad survival instincts, so I had to go with dodos
People think lemmings will jump of cliffs to their deaths on mass but they don’t actually do that. Jellyfish have no brains and most of them don’t have eyes either so they could work.
Turns out I’m dumb as people think Dodos were because I mixed up the Portuguese and the Dutch.

. “Bravest minnow in my waters,” the Wyrm says, brushing her hand across Valia’s forehead. The Captain’s eyes widen in shock. “It is I who must beg forgiveness.”
. The goddess spreads her arms, smiling as the seafolk swim up around her. “And though I am greatly diminished… and, perhaps, forever changed… I will do all I can to atone for the madness I have wrought.”
Below, the chimera Alinua had connected with curls near the ground, watching from behind a rib.
. “And you, gentle formcarver, savior of an immortal life,” the Wyrm says, cupping Alinua’s cheek in her hand. Alinua reddens, glancing away and tugging at her hair in embarrassment, as the Wyrm continues, “While you tread my waters, I will do all I can to repay the debt I owe. Though I fear your demigod is beyond my power to help.”
“Oh, it’s nothing, I’m just glad I could–
“What?” Alinua drifts back in shock, the Wyrm’s words registering in her mind.

That does beg the question of why she specifically mentioned Kendal and not the rest of the party, though. Especially when he was the least in-danger party member last time we checked.
That might actually just be because she doesn’t know about the rest. Kendal is famously very visible to gods all around him, she can probably see him sitting atop Rakhn from all the way down here.

That’s what I’m thinking, yes. She can see he’s on Rakhn, a famously unhealthy place for mortals to be.
Not to mention that it’s a place where the local god is hostile toward her specifically.
Well, one of her titles is “Bulwark against mountain’s rage” and Kendal IS RIGHT NOW on that raging mountain.
Also, depending on when the timelines match up, he could be actively fighting Rakhn at the moment.
Fingers crossed it’s this and not “oh no the Collector has caught up to him.” Although … I feel like she’d be quite a bit more concerned if it were the Collector. Then again … gods can’t see her, so she probably wouldn’t know.

As for Kendal being “beyond my power to help”, that could mean a few things. Most likely referring to either the Collector, or Rakhn. Best case:She is referring to Kendal fighting Rakhn, as we already saw in the last chapter. Worst case: The Northern Wyrm knows something about the Collector, and it is Bad News.
“Beyond my power to help” could mean nothing more than “no longer in the water”.

Maybe it’s harmless and she just means because he’s on Rakhn. I’m sure there’s nothing at all more ominous going on right now.

Gee Alinua! How come the Northern Wyrm lets you have TWO epithets?
Oh I love Captain Valia’s speech; the transition from well practiced listing of her god’s titles to her personal, shaky apology is perfect. She had lost hope, turned against her own god, and I bet she was fully expecting some kind of punishment. Maybe now the bravest minnow will mellow out, at least with Alinua anyway.
As for other highlights, panel 6 features the chimera Alinua touched with her magic (which I hope is dead, or else it may give the Collector a lead) and a zoomed out Selach glomping Alinua.
Aww, don’t you worry N.W., it’ll take some time, both to help your people and to regain your reputation, but I’m sure you’ll get back to your big snek form sooner or later. Or maybe stick with this current form, and just grow it bigger?
That reminds me, I wonder how Gleicann is doing reversing his current ominous form back to his old happier one.
I agree with @Leaf, I think N.W. means that since they washed ashore on Rakhn, they are not in her domain, thus out of her sphere of influence. In fact, given N.W.’s sobriquet “Bulwark against the mountain’s rage” and Rakhn calling her “the cold wyrm”, I’m guessing those two DO NOT get along.
Rakhn’s mood was just improved by Falst and Kendal’s heist; the last thing the gang needs is to inflame any tensions.
Prediction for next … whenever (take your time Red, as a guy with several apple trees it is nice picking fruit):
Scene change! I’m thinking the Ruunasers, we haven’t seen them in a while; either following up on Erin’s thinking, whatever that may be, or deciding how to look for the others. Neither Erin or Tess know they survived, let along where they might be.
And that’s not the only thing complicating the reunion; Kendal could be held up by Rakhn if he wants more, Falst and Dainix need to get past the volcanic Ignans, and, judging by N.W.’s words, Alinua is going to have to swim to the island and search it on her own. Granted Alinua has her aura sensing powers, so she may have an easier time finding someone.
OOH! IDEA! Alternate prediction for next whenever: scene change to COLLECTOR’S LAIR!! She’d be spying on Alinua using the water chimera that’s in today’s panel six. EEEEEE!!!
But I’ll be excited no matter how Red introduces next chapter. But for now…patience…

Cliffhanger aside, I love this page and the way the Wyrm is so gentle, affectionate, almost, with both Valia and Alinua. The formal way she speaks and bestows epithets also feels fitting for her.
Chuckling a little at Alinua’s “it was nothing” because ma’am it was definitely something.
It’s nice to see that this particular situation has been resolved! Maybe the Wyrm can help Alinua find her way to Kendal, or at least to shore, so she can help him get out of whatever trouble he’s about to get into… ot at least be reunited with her friend and in trouble together.
Hey, new to the comic here, how long is a short break usually? Trying to figure out when I should tune back in to see if it’s started up again.
I’d say a month is a good starting guess, but it might very well be longer. If you check back in at the start of November there’s a good chance that somebody would have written a comment here with official word from Red about how much longer the break would be. Unless the break was already over.
What you could also do would be to follow Red’s comicaurora account on tumblr or bluesky, where she’d post about a new page releasing once it happens.

I’m personally hoping that we go to the Snowfast and catch up with the stormdrake (they’re in the character page so I feel like they’re going to be important somehow) and Tam. Maybe see the Septrenn? We know Tam and Priora are close to the Snowfast, and since Tam was shown at the beginning of Ch. 4, I feel like Red is keeping them relevant to the near future of the story for a reason.

I’m thinking she picked up on whatever portion of the Life primordial is hitching a ride in Aluina and is….understandably surprised and concerned. Not sure if that would be a bad thing, but…there is something of a tone-shift there.

As far as I can tell, a month? That’s how long the last one was. I also speed read the comic though, so I don’t know for sure. The breaks could be inconsistent times.

ok, so i’ve been thinking for a bit, and if you’ll permit me, i would like to yap for a bit.
I’ve noticed in a lot of media (usually series of all types) a little phenomenon that i like to call “spiraling”. This is when a story starts breaking internal logic/doing weird things to the magic system/worldbuilding. Think like Warriors pulling an extra clan out of nowhere or Wings of Fire pulling a new continent out of nowhere, or ATLA pulling a new element out of nowhere. Sure, it’s interesting, but it also makes the story feel contrived in a sense and changes the feel of the world. It feels like the author/director/creator is just writing the story for the sake of consumption instead of a passion project. Some people might enjoy it, and a new portion of audience might be drawn in, but the story loses some of it’s core feeling. As an example, the MCU in my opinion started to spiral just after end game, where the directors were trying to keep the story going after it’s end. And sure, some people still like the MCU, but a lot of people have just sort of lost interest.
Now, the cool thing with Aurora is that we, the audience, can trust Red not make the story spiral. Specifically, we can trust Red to know when the story needs to end/isn’t hitting as high highs/is hitting lower lows. We already know from the heroes of greece video that Red isn’t afraid of sunsetting a longstanding thing she’s been doing if it’s no longer enriching her/is becoming worse. In this way, we almost get a sort of guarantee that Aurora will very probably not spiral.
*ahem* that was a bit of a long yap, but I felt i needed to put it somewhere, soooo yeah.

Do you mean the recent mcu stuff? Because thats totally fine and reasonable. Just because something isn’t widely liked doesnt mean its wrong for /you/ to like it. I love the Eragon series, and i was surprised to see that lots of people think its poorly written, but that doesnt stop me liking it. Whether its poorly written or not, I still like the way its written and thats what matters

From what I’ve heard her say about Aurora, I’m pretty sure Red has the entire structure and basic plot nailed down, beginning, middle, and end, and is only working out the details and technical points as she goes. It wasn’t designed to be one of those endless adventure shows that keep churning out content as long as there’s money for it, and I don’t see Red changing her mind about that.
Oo! I do remember seeing something along those lines, but I completely forgot to include it in my mini essay. It’s always better to see the parts of the story that the author has lovingly built from the beginning than the haphazard optimized mess that gets created when they try to wring as much money/engagement out of the audience as they can

If you guys didn’t know there’s an Eragon movie, which I honestly don’t really like. Some of it’s fine – I love (omg how am I forgetting the king’s name he’s such a prominent character)’s actor (omg WHAT IS HIS NAME I know it starts with a G or something… GALBATORIX there we go), and I think it would be all right / good if you hadn’t read the book.
There are problems with it though, for example they killed the Ra’zac and let Durza live, which is a complete switch from the book, so idk how they’re going to make a second movie (if they do). And I don’t particularly like Saphira’s design.
Also, have yall read Murtagh and The Fork, The Witch, And The Wyrm books? I’m definitely anticipating another couple books because of the plot threads introduced in Murtagh
Hey, I got into this like September and it’s great!! My second comic ever and very interesting. I love that every character has a different type of self destructive behavior, it’s very funny. And obviously horrifying but mostly funny. Also, I only understand like 70% of the world building but damn if it isn’t something I’m going to study like I should have been studying textbooks

As far as I know she is ok. She just takes breaks between chapters so that she can relax and build a buffer to get some art done before she starts uploading again. This is normal, don’t worry. If you go back and look between older chapters you’ll see breaks in between chapter uploads there too.
Red (the author) normally takes a hiatus after every chapter ends! The comic will be back soon, don’t worry!

I want something that is well written but is not full of cursing, sexually explicit stuff, and other things that make me feel like a terrible follower of Jesus for reading it. bonus points if anyone knows of one that has cool Christian allegory and maintains a good story.

I feel like you would enjoy daughter of the lilies! (there’s a little bit of swearing that’s censored, but there’s also the allegories of Christianity there). Also, I just want to plug white noise as my webcomic of choice to recommend because it’s a personal favorite. I imagine you would like the messaging in it.

As a fellow follower of Christ, I might recommend Castoff, by Star Prichard.
It’s rated PG-13 for Violence, Blood, and language. There IS a character who will swear, but she doesn’t use a lot of F-bombs (There has only been one so far in the entirety of it’s 841 pages).
If that’s fine with you, then join us! I wouldn’t say it has an especially ‘christian allegory’, especially compared to things like Narnia, but there are still some important themes present. Making huge mistakes and trying to atone for them. Forgiveness. Sacrificing for others.
And of course, it’s a well written story with well thought-out characters, and the community is really chill. And very nerdy, as you could probably reference just about ANYTHING in the comments and at least SOMEONE will get it.

I have not committed time to this, so I am assuming that somebody else has already figured out that the light and dark dragon are “the twins,” right? Because looking back at the first panels, I am realizing I should have figured this out a while ago.
Great theory! But I’m pretty sure that they aren’t. I think the Void dragon talks about ‘controlling the twins’, and apparently the twins enjoy making life and complex ecosystems, whereas voidy is only interested in a species that can free him (humans). From my perspective, it points to the dragons not being the twins, but rather being involved in their creation and/or having a strong influence over them.
I’m really curious as to what the Twins are supposed to be; if the dragons made them, how did they shape soul energy into a god? Why would they agree to make these, since VD’s only reason for them existing was crafting his escape route and LD would be opposed to that? Their colors (pink and gray) in particular are weird because there’s no obvious duality between those colors, which makes me wonder what they represent.
According to Red, the Twins are quite interchangeable, so it might be that the colours don’t represent anything in particular (although lore like that isnt set in stone until it actually appears in the comic). I think that we need to know what soul magic is from to be able to guess the twins’ origin, because that is currently a complete mystery, but it might give us some clues with where they come from.
I swear there was something about light and dark dragon creating the twins in the archive chapters but I could be completely misremembering.
That’s what the Ancients and Paladins believe. I do have the theory that Void and Light might-for lack of a better word-annihilate to form Soul energy. Also the Light and Void Dragons were probably once a single Primordial that split into its aspects, Light, Void and maybe Soul.
Random question, but am I the only one who thinks that the Collector’s face shape kind of looks like that of an owl? Iv’e been re-reading the comic and it’s been nagging at me for a while now
Haha!! Yeah I can see it! It’s the way her hair frames her face I think. Also sometimes the long part in the back flows like I could imagine an owl’s wings doing. But idk, I’m no burb expert xD Also I think it’s the mystery surrounding her – and I consider owls mysterious, what with all their creepy and incredible silent flying…
I adore the Collector – she’s consistently considered my favorite character every time she shows up (I mean it changes the very next page lol but that does nothing to negate my love for her hahah) I also adore Falst and Tahraim and will Never Get Enough of Falst&Dainix!!! Would love to know who makes you happy to see on the page! And what you think of the Collector besides her definitely reminding us of an owl
Yay! someone responded! I see the Collector as an owl mainly due to her face shape with her eyes and nose, but her hair does help emphasis that. Owls of course are adorable and creepy, and in this case it helps to make her slightly less human and more unnerving, which helps to up her villainy by a degree. I also like seeing Falst&Dainix, they have got to be some of my favourite characters, however Erin and the Void Dragon and their dynamic have got to be my favourite whenever they appear.
I’ve also spotted that back in the early pages of the comic when we first see the storm on page 1.4.3 in the first panel, that the two people standing in front of it are dressed in what appear to be Paladin colours of light blue and white, perhaps its Lady Huracan and her human acolyte, Umatz? The human does have a similar hair shape to what we saw of Umatz in Zurrith so…
I looked at the comments on those pages, yes it appears that other people also think that they are Lady Huracan and Umatz

I have an alarm that goes off three times a week to check Aurora. I fear if I turned it off for the hiatus, I might forget to turn it back on when the comic is back. So here I am, checking thrice weekly.

I don’t have an actual physical alarm, but i do have the mental equivalent. On Mondays and Fridays, its ok, because I follow a few other webcomics that update on one or both of those days. But on Wednesdays (like today), im left feeling like something is Missing 🙁 obviously im really happy that Red’s taking a good long break when she needs to. That doesnt mean I cant mope around about my Dearest Beloved webcomic not updating xD

Castoff: high fantasy story, found family, they’re currently wanted by the government for unspecified crimes (updates Monday + friday)
Phantomarine: A princess is killed, becomes a ghost, there’s a really cool thing going on with gods and tragic backstories and stuff but thats all spoilers/still a mystery, theres an adorable doggo!! (Updates mondays)
The Glass Scientists: Jekyll and Hyde retelling, where Jekyll is leader of a guilde of mad scientist desperately trying to rebrand them as respectable while trying to hide his /own/ forray into mad science (updates mondays too)
Sleepless domain: magical girls fight monsters at night, theres a bunch of cool stuff that I either dont know how to explain succinctly, sorry (currently on indefinite hiatus but theres a whole bunch already done and I really love it)
I also have a whole list ive made of various ones ive heard of and would like to try someday. I could copy and paste that list if you like, but i cant recommend them like I can these, since ive not actually read them
I saw the list of recommended comics this morning and am now back, after having read through the entirety of Cast-Off. It is really good and I second it’s recommendation.
My other favourite webcomic is How To Be A Werewolf. It’s about a young woman who became a werewolf when she was really young, and while she has very loving and caring human parents who did their best, she didnt have anyone to teach her how to be a werewolf until a mysterious stranger comes to town.

Some other comics I read:
Wiglaf and Mordred – Villain-adjacent meets Hero. Hero won’t leave Villain alone because they’re the only one who doesn’t know who Hero is. Shenanigans ensue. – Doesn’t really have a fixed schedule, I would guess mon/fri but it varies
True Magic – Found family, peasants trying to make their lives better, fire magic. Trauma. Also kind of comedy. – Updates maybe once a week, the artists are struggling financially so if you want to you can donate – It switched from a comic format to a some-images-some-words format, like a book/comic cross, recently. It takes a little bit to get used to but it’s not that bad.
Northwind – Two angels cast down to earth after releasing a monster (the Northwind), shenanigans with other angels, monsters, humans, and other creatures (bird people) – Currently on a hiatus, idk when it’ll restart
Fey Winds and The Raven Saga are both really good. Though the former seems to be in hiatus, or at least is slow to update, and the latter is no longer being published on webtoon (and webtoon’s done the thing where unless you get an account you can’t read the full chapters, which is annoying). But it is getting a physical release, apparently!
Tales from Alderwood is also excellent, as is Caelum Sky. I need to get caught up on the latter, actually.
I just had a theory. What if “gentle formcarver” and “savior of an immortal life” are now part of Alinua’s true name? Because, if I remember Red’s tumblr post about it correctly, gods have true names that are mostly just a long list of epithets. If this is a feature of the kind of soul they have, then that is that. But if it is instead because of how long they live and how grand their actions are, then maybe an influential mortal like Alinua might be able to add a few epithets to her true name before her death. And if anybody would be aware of those epithets, or maybe capable of giving them, then that would be a goddess like the wyrm, right? We know very little about true names so this is probably not how it works, and I don’t think this could become relevant until much later on in the comic (maybe at the monastery?), but still.
It probably involves the perception of others, unclear if that is only a god thing or not. It’s probably like how gods are influenced by what mortals think of them, so Alinua would need a lot of people to know the epithets to effect her true name.
But if Vash gains enough new epithets, The Collector’s prison might fail to hold him.
Bit late to the party here, but…
If I remember correctly from a few old Tumblr posts, gods possibly have the simplest true names (except for primordials, whose true names are singular words). Mortals have some kind of fractal, infinitely complex truename that can almost never be recounted fully. Partially reconstructing someone’s truename is what happens in necromancy in this world, where nearby soul energy is moved to reconstruct/imitate a small fragment of a mortal’s being; the part that is described by whatever part of the truename was used.
I think one example from Red was using the part of the truename of an old, dead general that describes his battle tactics, which would result in an imitation of the dead general that could now advise you on tactical matters.
In other words, these are absolutely part of Alinua’s true name now, as is pretty much every single thing she has ever done.

At, like, the end of the story: How will Alinua’s part of the story resolve? (I’ll be especially interested in Alinua-developments throughout this comic’s run but I needed to put Alinua specific stuff in a specific time area.)

Is anyone here fans of Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere? If there are, I’ve read Mistborn Era 1 (plus Secret History), the full Stormlight Archive, and Tress of the Emerald Sea
I haven’t read any of it yet, I want to but don’t know where to start, any recommendations?
This is ten days late, but I’d recommend starting either with Elantris (Sanderson’s first novel), or with the first Mistborn trilogy (Final Empire, Well of Ascension, Hero of Ages).
YES! I love Sanderson’s work, it’s actually a large part of what made me want to be a writer myself!
I still need to read the fifth Stormlight book, as well as some of the Secret Project novels. But otherwise I’m pretty sure I’ve read everything else!

I typically stick with regular books (there’s just something about reading a physical book in the winter in front of the fireplace with some warm tea). The problem is my sibling owns the book and has to read it first, but they want to (understandably) go back through the first four books. So I’ve effectively been put on hold.

I’m almost caught up on the second Mistborn era (halfway through the last book), and I just finished ‘Elantris’. I haven’t read any of the other Cosmere books yet, the Stormlight Archive is next on the list, but I have read the Reckoners trilogy and ‘The Rithmatist’ (which was actually my introduction to Sanderson’s work, and I’m still eagerly awaiting the sequel).
(I’m still not sure why it took me as long as it did to get through ‘Elantris’, that book was so good.)

Crazy that the gang has been separated for a year now and we got only one line from un rockified dainix. Though I definitely wouldn’t want the story to rush cuz it so good story wise and obviously gorgeous, plus we got the actual physical first book this year which is amazing

Since we have not got the “cover art” for the next chapter yet I feel like we are propably looking at second week of January or something like that at the earliest.

Looking at the cover, what are our predictions for the next chapter?
I personally think that ‘illumination’ as the title suggests that they might at least partially figure out what exactly the light dragon is and how she fits into the world. I also kind of hope that the Storm dragon turns up 😀
i think it would be kind of funny if the dragon is sent to kill Erin, but then spots Tess and makes a beeline for her because its holding a grudge for her punching it xD
It looks like Dainix is processing Implications, so maybe this new encounter with the Paladins could also end up “illuminating” something about Falst?
Since Erin’s tattoos haven’t healed yet, he probably cant do magic, which means that whatever comes won’t have to be as strong as Tam to pose a threat (specially if, for whatever reason, Tess is occupied with something else and the two non-magic users have to go up against a Paladin).
Either way, my prediction is that Erin will be rag-dolled at least once, or violate doctor’s orders and channel with broken tattoos. If Alinua doesnt come out of the ocean to his rescue by the end, he will end the chapter even more injured than at the start.
One of the first things I noticed when I saw the cover was the shiny sliver squares on Erin’s face, and while my sibling thinks they’re bandages I think they look like metal plates, so I really really reeeeeaally hope we’re gonna get cyborg Erin (both because it’ll look really cool and also YESSSS TAKE AWAY HIS HUMANITY MORE!!!!! AS HIS THOUGHTS GET REPLACED BY THE VOID DRAGON’S AND HE BECOMES MORE MECHANICAL HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TIL THE ORGINAL ERIN IS BARELY PRESENT AT ALL!!!!). Another thing I noticed is that Erins right eye is paler and more light-magic-colored than the other. While it could just be the lighting, could it be that Erin’s gonna learn how to use light magic??? Perhaps become master of all eight elements, becoming the first person to do so even?!?! As we’re talking about light magic and eyes, Falst’s eyes are also looking pretty pale blue. Is Falst’s light magic ability going to finnaly come to light (heh, light)???? Also now thinking about it, maybe the soulshaper monks use light magic to help shape the soul? While I haven’t read the comic in awhile (i decided to reread the comic once the chapter cover came out), and it’s been disproven that light magic is soul magic, we have seen light magic have mind abilities (the pain headbands, the paldains being able to use telepathy), so what if the soul shaper monks used light magic to help calm and manipulate the mind so it is best shape to be molded? Sorta like hypnosis. One more silly thing before I get to predictions not based one the cover; Erin’s hair is now bluish gray, adding to our current collection of colors which are black, dark brown, light brown in yellow light (and I think dark brown might have been in different lighting as well?), really dark purple, and purple in certain lighting/when using void magic. I think his true hair color is a triangular prism. Finnally for things not related to the cover, I think we’ll start back with either kendal or the collector, perhaps even both if he gets a vison of the collector or something; kind of like the “SHE’S COMING” that he got earlier. I think that’s it, sorry if its kinda rambly, I’m pretty tired and still getting over the rush of the comic almost being back after approximately three months lol >v<.
A completely wild guess I have is that Erin will gain a new power. My basis is one of his eyes looks funky in the crack of light.
