Yeah. And it feels intentional. The hair appears similar in color, texture, and volume. The skin tones seem very similar. But if the Collector made this – which is pretty likely – she never met Alinua.
I don’t actually think the collector made it. Personally, I think it was a kind of surge, like the chimeric plague kind, that Alinua accidentally unleashed because her mind was getting scrambled.
:O Well, that’s an idea. I never even thought of that, and I don’t think anyone’s mentioned it before, but its such a great theory! I’m sure we’ll see whether you’re right pretty soon.
Yall are way overthinking this. It’s the same fish snake from before, which Alinua sensed with her life powers conection. The green eyes are a common glow in the dark effect
alinua never had a chimeric surge tho, those actually kill their host, the whole reason why life mum refused to help alinua until now was because she was afraid of accidentally causing ali to surge killing her and everyone in their vicinity
She will have *somehow* got there in, like, a day, unless her attack on Zuurith was actually earlier, and a sort of flash-back. Red has said that she doesn’t put much effort into time it takes to travel, but to look at the world map, I would consider travel quite that quick to be very strange indeed, even if she flew. I had assumed that ‘Shes coming’ was more of a general warning of ‘she knows about you and wants to track you down’, not ‘she is quickly approaching’, but I could easily be wrong.
It’s probably one of the Collector’s other chimerae, but heavily mutated: It has a similar mane to the others, and you can also see similar spikes and the same split jaw.
@ Spades of Ace: do you think cancers exist in Aurora? More pertinent question: do you think Alinua can “cure cancer?” Also, regarding the *bweem* …I made the mistake of zooming in on tiny Alinua and it looks like she developed flippers on her feet. That’s going to make it way harder when she eventually transitions back onto land, assuming that’s not just the artistic equivalent of a typo caused by the incredibly small scale Red had to draw Ali in.
Some tiny, faint neurons in the back of my head are whispering to me that I’ve seen a tumblr ask about this, let me go check-
Hmm, I couldn’t find it, so it might be nothing, but I assume it would be a result of low level Life corruption. (Which is when some excess energy stays within the soul barrier and begins to influence the mages body)
In which case, Alinua could maybe cure it? She has been able to extract life energy from a chimera before, so its the same principle – but she still can’t bypass the soul barrier without badly hurting the person, and low-level elemental corruption would probably be hard to her to get out.

I
ok, there’s no way that this “Lifevessel-prototype-05”-looking thing can survive with Alinua-sized meals. did it really just hunt the boat down for something that’s barely a snack? …I appreciate the dedication.
Since it’s clearly a Chimera, it seems like this thing was created specifically to track and destroy the party so it doesn’t need to sustain itself as a natural part of the ecosystem long term
On an unrelated note:
does anyone know a good estimate what the actual average of eyes for animals would be in the real world?
And here is a (maybe) fun game for anyone rereading:
– let m be the number of eyes (no doblecounting) seen on beings since the beginning of the comic
– let n be the number of beings (no double counting) seen since the beginning of the comic
-> get a, the average number of eyes per beeing, for all the beings seen until the page up to which point you counted
Ugh, I’m able to vividly visualize what the Excel/Google Sheet would look like. Column A would be Page Number, B would be m, C would be n, D would be a, and we’d be able to Insert:Graph with a being the vertical axis and Page Number being the horizontal axis.
Great, now I actually kind of want to.
That would be really cool!
I actually did it up to the end of chapter 1 of Arc 1 and came to an average of about 2.12 but it would still be very nice to have results from more sources, since I made some very disputable counting choices and I dont’t know when I can continue the project.
Life Mum comes in clutch! If it’s a burst of Life energy then the snea snek is bound to feel the hurt even more since it’s overflowing with it.
For that matter, this is our first look at it in full. It doesn’t quite have the aesthetic of the Collector’s usual chimeras. We’ll have to wait and see, I suppose.
There’s no need to get cross about it, they’re just having fun, but it is a good point that if you comment ‘first’ you should also try to write something else. It isn’t really first comment if it’s not a proper comment.
. The serpent circles toward Alinua, its many eyes watching her, small ears twitching, pale purple mane flat against its back as it swims.
. It rushes toward her, mouth opening, three tongues lashing. It actually looks quite like the Collector’s dogs if they were snakes, with a three-part mouth, the mane, and spikes on its back.
. Alinua starts to glow, green lines spiraling down her body like she’s having a chimeric eruption. The light brightens and brightens until she’s glowing like a green star.
Yay, Aurora’s back! Wow. I wonder if the light will scare away the serpent? Depending on how you look at it, the serpent could be still rushing toward Alinua, or like swimming away, toward the “camera”. So idk.
Am I being naive in hoping for some sort of “Oh no giant sea monster that is actually a metaphor for personal growth and ,after learning a lesson about purpose or something, also a giant ride able Deus ex machina/ Appa that gets them to helm after annihilating whatever problems everyone else is dealing with today” situation?
What has too many eyes, and a jaw over-sized? That’s a moray!
When the light hits it’s eyes, from a Life Mum surprise, that’s amore!
If the oozing life energy, triple jaw, and prehensile tongues didn’t already have me sold on this being a chimera, the empty eyes in an asymmetrical layout did. I was open to the possibility of it being the creation of a different life mage, but all these features, plus the mane of hair, just scream Collector.
However, just because the Collector made it, doesn’t mean she’s actively controlling it; its attack on the ship could be part of her schemes, or an accident from a project she long abandoned.
Ok, Life has taken notice, but I’m unsure what she’ll do about Nessie, if she needs to do much at all; if deep sea creatures are as averse to brightness as Erin claimed, this light show alone might be enough to scare it away. I think this burst is as much about helping Alinua survive underwater.
Dealing with the chimera is going to be integral, both in Alinua’s solo arc and to ensure the gang can leave Rakhn safely, but how? In Hilltop, Alinua was able to bind a chimera with vines then drain its excess life energy; this chimera is much bigger, they’re underwater, and there isn’t as much plant matter to work with. A possible alliance with the local mer-people could be crucial.
Yeah, Alinua is pretty nerfed with the ocean floor potentially being a mile away or deeper. The only things she can do is heal and, maybe, manipuating some algal blooms. Or she could just go Fuck you I’m hitting you with the ALGAE BEAM.
The merfolk are certainly a choice, and IMO taking the chimera down would be substantially easier if there are any sekrai (water-adapted human) mages around.
I wouldn’t say Alinua is nerfed due to lack of ability, more constrained by morality. The ocean is filled with life, and Alinua has the ability to twist all life to her will. It’s just that a lot of the big life in the open ocean is animal life (plankton, jellyfish, sharks, whales). The only thing is that Alinua does not want to make her own chimera’s. It does look like she is growing some gills though.
she doesnt really need ground to create plants tho she has been shown to create plants from herself as early as her introduction in chapter 2, she only really needs a surface
I think in those cases she was growing it from a seed, not out of nowhere, and she doesn’t have any of those right now. Also, I suspect that she would need at least some soil to grow something of a size which could affect this sea monster.
Alinua needs better pockets. …come to think of it, the entire Floof Squad needs substantially better pockets (except maybe Dainix). Also, @ Evil Tree: is that joke a reference to The Octopus Lady or was she referencing something else? I’m seriously out of the loop and I intend on pretty much staying that way. Oh, the Octopus Lady is a marine biology channel on youtube and Nebula who runs a show called Alien Ocean where she talks about WEIRD species in marine environments. It’s very funny and educational. …She’d have a field day with this chapter lol
It’s referencing the song That’s Amore (amore being the Italian word for love). I’ve seen a couple different people do parodies of it about moray eels, so it’s hard to say if they were referencing the octopus lady specifically
Thanks, Tararrel312! I never would have known. And to ApplecrustC: now THAT is a cool idea! I don’t think Alinua has ever worked with ocean life before…nor has she worked with animals other than healing them, so coral (or other sessile animals for that matter) could get *very* interesting…and possibly freaky. In any case, EXCITEMENT!!!
Yep, I was referencing That’s Amore, but this is my first time hearing about this Octopus lady.
I got the “a moray” idea from a Mario fan comic by someone called akiiame where Mario sings a version of That’s Amore to his hypothetical daughter and uses the ‘a moray’ joke, likely referencing those eels that show up in some Mario games.
Should we be concerned that the eel appears to have pointy ears, white hair, and the exact same shade of green eyes as the life energy?
It’s almost like an elf got turned into a sea monster due to having too much life energy or something
The absence of sound makes the artistry of this comic much more apparent.
I’ll notice the difference between Alinua’s round, almost glyph-like glowing markings and Mr Water Snek’s cracked, damaged-looking glowing markings. I think this is the difference between Life’s Avatar and one simply imbued with Life without true art. For all spellcraft is an art, it’s still shoving dead parts of Primordials around. Life is more-or-less properly alive and consciously capable of manipulating her presence in things via Alinua’s will.
I have been wondering:
Did the collector choose the form of her Chimeras for some kind of efficiency reason?
Or is that simply how Life used to look and that form is a homage/purest expression life essence?
This might just be the result of a previous chimeric plague/random life corruption.
To join in with some pedantic…ness(?) of my own: Plenty of sea creatures eat things *a lot* smaller than them. If it wasn’t for the Life flash-bang, it could have eaten her with minimal effort and in the miniscule amount of time worth spending on a ‘piece of meat that small’.
Now, if it spends ages trying to eat her despite great difficulty, then it is either very vengeful and malicious, or deserving of some pedanticness.
I was worried she might get swallowed whole like Toby and Blinky from Trollhunters, so things are going much better than they could be. Also, her patterns on panel three are gorgeous.
If I had a nickel for every time a god possessed one of the main characters when the character in question was inches from death, I’d have two nickels…which isn’t a lot but it’s interesting that it happened twice
Life’s not a god. By our definitions she could be but, in-world, gods are made of souls woven over a physical domain, and connected to that domain, that can create incarnations. Life is a *Primordial*, which is a whole other thing — a giant, space-dwelling, self contained being made of a unique substance, embodying a unique principle, and with a ‘soul’ made not of soul energy, but of her own unique elemental energy. But its probably still close enough to get your two nickels xD
What do you think the Floof squad smells like? I started thinking about this after I reread Falst complaining about how everything smells bad with his Ferin nose. Here’s my two cents (which is probably oversimplified from what it would be if you could actually smell these characters…that sounded real weird lol):
Falst: nothing. Like I’ve said before, he’s an extremely clean person.
Dainix: whatever he cooked that morning (many spices). Unless he’s using Crucible magic, which either smells like incense or brimstone depending on whether it’s a Good Thoom or a Bad Thoom respectively.
Tess: petrichor.
Erin: some ridiculous, expensive perfume. If he was less hubristic, he’d smell like books, but nooo he has to waste money on something that triggers people’s gag reflex. …Falst why did you infiltrate my comment??
Kendal: strawberries. Part of the whole “Child of Vash” thing.
Alinua: on a good day, herbs. On a less good day: humus. On a really really bad day: the smell of the human animal (that’s a euphemism)…or I guess the Elf animal in this case. Today: seaweed.
Red has said that Kendal smells extremely clean, take that to mean what you will. Personally, I somehow cannot be fully convinced that something is clean unless it smells of citrus or something similiar, but I doubt that’s what she meant!
Somehow, this gigantic terrifying snek looks like such a startled doggo in that last panel. I think it’s the laid back ears and the wide eyes. I did not expect this thing to have ears.
Hooray for Life coming in clutch! I had a feeling they would.
I’m not sure what would be funnier in this situation, life full on Jonahing Alinua to safety, or using her as a fishy flashbang so as to say”Ah ah! Drop it!”
Omg a baby!
That silly little goober finding a treat in the water like
sniff sniff *gets flashbanged*
I kinda feel bad for it. Wrecking that boat was already a lot of work for what amounts to one skittle.
Wait, why does the snake look like Alinua?
Yeah, I noticed that too xD
Hmmm… It does have that sort of tri-axial jaw the Collector seems fond of including. And it’s glowing with life even before Ali does her thing.
It’s a neat theory. However, if you recall, Kendal was awoken by the voices of the People of Vash, crying out to him that “*SHE’S COMING*”
There’s only really one “she” they should be aware of. And we know the Collector’s been on the move. Some more supporting evidence to chew on for now.
I didn’t notice that, but now you’ve cursed me to forever see snalinua
I stan “Snalinua” as the unofficial name for this beast!
All hail SNALINUA 🙌
🙌
its a chimera, if its one of the collector’s or not it reamains to be seen
I wonder if the skintone and hair are a result of a more direct connection to life.
It’s probably one of the Collector’s other chimerae, but heavily mutated: It has a similar mane to the others, and you can also see similar spikes and the same split jaw.
ALINUA CANCER RAY!!!
@ Spades of Ace: do you think cancers exist in Aurora? Ah, a good look at the trademark multiple tongues and triple jaw. I guess that confirms what it is.
Oh crap I had not even noticed that. Guess Alinua is about to deal with another chimera
Agreed. I saw the split jaw and went “Wait. Is that?”
… tatzlwurm?
Agreed, definite chimera. Also, the excess Life energy and just the VIBE of the thing.
The Leviathan has FLOOFY HAIR! 😀
and it kind of matches with Alinua’s.
But also: Holy f**k, this is beautiful!

The pedant in me says “Why would a monster that size even notice a piece of meat that small?”
The fantasy fan in me slaps the pedant and says “Dummy, dragons every bit as large are notorious for hunting down morsels EXACTLY that size…

No, no, pedanticness is better
Incorrect, but better xD
I’ve missed this
Did Alinua fricking create that thing? It looks like her!
I was worried she might get swallowed whole like Toby and Blinky from Trollhunters, so things are going much better than they could be. Also, her patterns on panel three are gorgeous.
lol they have the same hair
Very dense and spicy elf sinks fast! (not good for eating; poor widdle sea monster)
Alinua legit can’t die, Primordial Life coming in clutch
Looks like Life is hooking Alinua up with some neck gills.
red has a fluffy hair addiction, even the fish has fluffy hair!
I wonder if those markings on Alinua’s neck will turn out to be gills?
The serpent is Alinua from the future, after her life magic finally goes rogue and mutates her into a monster

I think Tess would smell like ozone and old pennies
Red has said that Kendal smells extremely clean, take that to mean what you will. Personally, I somehow cannot be fully convinced that something is clean unless it smells of citrus or something similiar, but I doubt that’s what she meant!
Somehow, this gigantic terrifying snek looks like such a startled doggo in that last panel. I think it’s the laid back ears and the wide eyes. I did not expect this thing to have ears.
Hooray for Life coming in clutch! I had a feeling they would.
I thought the same thing, but on second look i think they might be horns, which was a bit disappointing 🙁
Can I suggest that we nickname big maybe probably chimera Richard for the Moby Dick joke? It’s just how I’ve been thinking of it in my head.
Thing already has a mouth like a graboid, I sure hope a burst of life energy doesn’t make it mutate into the full graboid life cycle (wet edition)
