. “NO!” Falst cries, twisting and plunging after Demonheart-Dainix, hand outstretched. He grabs the end of it, but the already burning fabric rips, leaving Falst with a fragment of the sleeve in his hand. It continues falling, Falst a few feet above it.
. Then the demonheart plunges into the lava.
. The lava explodes upward, enveloping Falst and hurling the cinderpedes away, showering the Ignan guards.
Aaaaaahspleilng FALST
…Huh. So did Caliban lie? Did they truly belive that the Fireseed was the only thing that could fix Dainix? Is something else happening? Maybe the Fireseed is the only thing that could put Dainix truly back to normal, and the lava makes the Demon different? idk
Oh and I forget who said it, but I liked ‘cinderpede’ so I’m using it now 🙂
Oh God, where is Falst
Do you think Rakhn can feel this happening?
Dainix’s core is Demonheart, something supposedly durable enough to withstand anything but Obsidian. Theoretically, Dainix’s core would begin absorbing Fire energy from the environment, but so long as it’s not a Fireseed, he won’t transform…
Unless Caliban lied? They never tried mundane Fire – they stopped that from happening. Could this all have been a ploy to get an in with Rakhn, or something?
”absorbing Fire energy from the environment”? I honesly have no idea where you got that from or if it’l actually work but could you imagane if Dainix just strait up started absorbing the ‘fire’ and become a giant version of fire form Dainix. That would be sooooo cool! Also this clifhanger damit
I like the Look of the Thwoom, cept for the fact that given their relative locations falst was definitely in that, and no matter how good a thwoom that is, this is still lava.
Ignan 1: Look out, someone just dropped the One Ring.
Ignan 2: Could swear that cat-guy was screeching “precious” as he fell.
Ignan Boss: Can you two cut the chatter, AND FOCUS!
I’ve recently realised I’ve had two locations, the Caldera Shrine and Rakhn’s Temple, mixed up; the former is here in the centre of the caldera, as the name implies, and the latter is, as Caliban said, “on the northern face of the slope, just under the caldera”, where Kendal is. I was getting the two mixed up before, not realising Cali was talking to Kendal then, not Falst. Glad I managed to clear that up in my head.
Yeah, I’m going for bad THOOM. If Dainix could have been cured by dropping him into lava, Tahraim and Caliban wouldn’t have concocted this “steal from a god” plan; this is bad and something they wanted to avoid. Maybe Dainix is entering a chaotic quasi-demon state, or maybe the lava is reacting violently to the presence of a demonheart.
In any case, getting out of the volcano then applying the shard is no longer an option; Falst needs to imbue it right now.
And that’s the other concern, Falst. Judging from panel 4, he was directly under the demonheart when it fell into the lava, thus is directly in the path of this pillar of flame. That scarf has limits, and I think this is more than testing them. We were talking before about Erin being out of commission for the Helm trek; if this goes bad, Falst could be limited in the beginning of it too.
Prediction for next week: I’m thinking (hoping) the force from this plume will knock Falst back to the shrine, sparing him the worst of the fire and getting him on solid ground. As for how he then gets to Dainix to apply the shard, I’m thinking either Rakhn will step in, or Falst convinces those Ignans that he can solve the problem, if they help him.
Actually about Caliban and Tahraim, what if just yeeting him into the lava was in fact a viable option, but the shard would provide a nice power boost or for one reason or another it was preferable to just reviving him. I feel like in general, these two are going to get established as kinda trustworthy but also kinda not. This twist would do that nicely and besides, if this is bad why didn’t Caliban go: oh and don’t throw him into the lava or things will go very poorly. It just feels nonsensical to not warn of the danger for the crucible that you kinda need. So I just feel like the fire shard is more important because power boost or something but not because it’s the only option to revive Dainix. Also I feel like someone should be getting a power-boost out of this considering that they’ve gone through a lot and someone should be getting something out of this.
Okay, we’ll call that a ‘no’ for a third use of Spooky Questionable Powers in this scene. On the other hand (quite literally), I think that looks like Falst got the throw of the Fireseed off, and that *THOOM* is probably a good one. Here comes Unrestrained Dainix at 200% power is my peanut gallery take.
Upd: I had a closer look at #4. He’s still holding the shard. This is gonna be problematic. On the other hand, this behaviour is highly irregular for lava. The tradition of Friday Cliffhangers (or in this case Clifffallers) holds true. Let’s see what the Falst doin next week, I guess.
My guess is that being dropped into the literal lava pit instead of being given a fireseed shard will restore Dainix’s fire, but in an overwhelming, destabilizing way. I’m worried he might flare out of control again and struggle to calm down.
Given that he’s wrapped in Kendal’s second sleeve (the one that didn’t get destroyed in the fight) and the placement of the flames, to me it looks like it may be the fabric alone catching fire from the hot air. Though now that you mention it, partially shielded or not, Falst didn’t ignite equally as fast (😔). Good catch!
Well, Kendal’s sleeve no longer has the protection of the Scarf, and it’s fabric. I feel like this is just it catching fire cause it’s in a literal volcano and no longer has the Heat Resistance effect
He’s fine. Obscuring dust cloud, oldest trick in the book. He’s fine. It’s fine. Everyone’s fine.
The lava is so well drawn! The intial splash is so *goopy* and leaves such an interesting swirl. Definitely not just distracting myself from the possibility of Falst getting his hair singed off…
Is Dainix less dense than lava? I *really* hope he floats…
Here’s my theory on how Falst is still alive: on panel 4 we get a zoomed out view of both him and rock-Dainix falling toward the lava. Panel 5 is, I believe, zoomed in on *just* Dainix falling in, and then we get an immediate, massive eruption. I think Falst was still in the air when that eruption happened, and he instinctively made himself a protective bubble with the light magic we’ve seen him use on instinct once before. We’ve also gotten foreshadowing for it by Falst trying to figure out how to create a shield bubble out of wind magic, and succeeding, and we’ve seen the paladin create the same kind of shield bubble with light magic, so we know it’s possible. Hence, Falst shielded himself and just got shot a thousand feet into the air, without actually touching the lava.
For mobile readers.
Alt-text: is that a good thoom or a bad thoom

I believe it was the Bluesky post I linked in my name, at least that’s where I got the Cinderpedes from
funny enough there is no tumblr text today, hmm.
Bluesky Text: chapter ends on Monday!
I bet this chapter ends with Dramatic Dainix Reveal(tm), and the next chapter *starts* with return to Alinua
RIP Falst 🙁
(Hopefully his volcano shard gives him fire resistance or something.)
Oh God, where is Falst

Its not fire energy that Dainix needs – its fire matter. Which… still applies to the lava.
“Is that a good thoom or a bad thoom” Trick question, is there a good Thoom in an ACTIVE VOLCANO?
I like the Look of the Thwoom, cept for the fact that given their relative locations falst was definitely in that, and no matter how good a thwoom that is, this is still lava.
100% agreement o,o
It may not all be going according to plan, but Danix is now in the heart of the volcano.
Welp, RIP Falst, I guess. XD
I don’t think the magic scarf will protect him from that😬😬
You know, I don’t know why I’m surprised, but I think Caliban was lying needing a Fireseed, specifically….
Also, if Schlock Mercenary has taught anyone anything, it’s that there is no such thing as a good thoom, even when it is a good thoom
And thus the reveal that Dainix transmuted himself into a fleshy volcanic mentos.
Well, he’s dead.

Can Dainix save Falst? Now you ARE killing me, Red, but I have faith you can still pull off miracles.
See we could have just tossed him in the volcano and been done with it
Guys, I don’t think that thoom is lava 😉
Okay, we’ll call that a ‘no’ for a third use of Spooky Questionable Powers in this scene. Mostest realest game of “The Floor Is Lava” ever.
Oh nooooo

And Falst? Falst, where are you buddy???
I’m hoping Dainix caused the Thoom because you can’t get more elemental fire than lava. So i have two wishful theories:
-Falst spidermanned his way again to somewhere safe
-Dainix is keeping falst safe in a bubble of fire or something like this
me when i drop my oreo in the mug of hot chocolate and have to fish it out with a spoon
Uncalled for. I laughed out loud in class.
That better be a REALLY good scarf
did… did anyone notice Dainix start to set himself on fire before hitting the lava??
Given that he’s wrapped in Kendal’s second sleeve (the one that didn’t get destroyed in the fight) and the placement of the flames, to me it looks like it may be the fabric alone catching fire from the hot air. Well that looks bad BUT we didn’t see Falst go into the lava so I’m maintaining hope that he could have yeeted himself to safety
Houston, we have ignition.
OH GOD THEY BOTH FELL IN.
Okay so definitely it’s “the lava is as good as the fireseed” but FALST???
…If he wasn’t a main character, I’d be INCREDIBLY CONCERNED.
Same. Actually, pretty concerned anyway.
……oh no.
Dynamite character. Check.
Not me using the SFX on this page as a vocal stim.
*in the middle of class*
“Blup. THOOM.”
And the incredibly satisfying; “ssshhhhripp.”
I guess lava is fire enough. side note: the way falst’s hand extends past the panel to grab at the next frame is so cool!
He’s fine. Obscuring dust cloud, oldest trick in the book. He’s fine. It’s fine. Everyone’s fine.
