I feel like lava would be really sticky and gross. Like getting it in your hair would be a nightmare. For more reasons than the normal lava ones.

For mobile readers.

Jesus, Red really took one look at Lava and went ”mmmmm, Forbidden Pudding” huh?
casually shakes lava off clothes
Gloves or not, instinctively reaching up to brush lava off one’s shoulder seems like a dubious habit for that person’s job.
They’re volcanic ignans. They’re immune to the heat. At worst, it’s probably more like thick mud to them. Also, they have brooms, it’s their job to sweep the lava from the passageways.
Considering their hazard protection equipment, I highly doubt they’re immune, just highly resilient.
Dude, they are wearing all of that because this is cold to them.

Oh my, I had no idea. That’s fascinating!
According to an ask on Red’s tumblr, that protective equipment is to keep them warm. Apparently, the caldera’s open air is relatively cool compared to the volcano’s interior. So yeah, the fire adaptation in the ignans really is that extreme–lava is like mud to them!
Fascinating. There’s so much to explore there, and gives me new ideas for my fire cat characters.
Destructive battle
Energy spilling over
Lava is heating
Actually yeah, lava could be like really nasty heated treacle if it wouldn’t immediately incinerate your hair.
And then it turns to crumbly rick.
Ah yes, Kendals patented anti-god move, go for the hand. (Literally, he always does it, even unintentionally)
I mean in combat it is probably the most immediately dangerous of the appendages, I don’t think losing the head matters much to gods, it does make sense
Not to mention that it’s often the most readily available target, given the enemy’s attempts to keep their weapon in position to give you a bad time.
To be fair, it’s a decent strategy. Kendal doesn’t fight to kill, not that you can kill a god, so going for the limbs (which are often relatively less protected by armour) isn’t a bad way to go about disabling and neutralising an opponent.
It’s not just his anti-gods move, he did the same to Falst back when they fought. Damaging the hand/arm greatly reduces the threat the foe poses while minimizing risk of killing them, so it makes sense for Kendall, given his desire to avoid unnecessary killing (or unnecessary fighting for that matter). It’s not that important for gods, however, given they can often just regrow or remake their hands, but it would still buy some time with the foe at reduced capacity.
So, assuming the obsidian blade isn’t a part of his form, wouldn’t that mean that if when he reforms, he’d have to pick it up again each time?
Also, regrettable lack of conversation during the violence. It seems out god and godling are taking “talking with your sword” too literally.
I think itβs like Zuurithβs blade flail and part of the incarnation, rather than Vashβs sword which is made from external components. I will be honest, Iβm waiting for that great sword to split in two, think Rodahn or power stance
‘Zuurith’s weapon didn’t incarnate with him – he had it forged too [refering to Vash’s sword]. Weapons made by Tahraim are more durable and more powerful than anything a god could make just by incarnating.’ β Red, tumblr
She did say elsewhere that it is an extension of him, but probably in a similar way to Vash’s connection with his sword. You might be recalling Tynan’s blades, which are a part of his incarnation, formed from trace amounts of metal that he absorbed when his lightning strikes the ground!
Those background Ignans *snigger* “Ewww look at all this lava, ugh! Help me wipe it off, will you, before it goes stiff and crackly?”
Very nice transition of scenes there. Also, oooh the sheer bishonen of Kendal! SO fabulous. So gorgeous.
My body decided for me that I was going to read this early by waking me up 3 hours ahead of the normal time
Well it’d depend on the silica content of the Lava I’d think
How did the coats not catch on fire
I’d guess they are made from the hides of creatures as fire resistant as they are.
I like how the Ignans are casually brushing the lava off like mud. Like, “Blecch, gooey.”
Nice move on Kendal’s part, striking the body part that’s both easiest to reach and wielding the weapon. If that were a mortal hand, he would’ve just crippled their ability to fight. I doubt that attack will phase Rakhn for long, though, if at all.
It is clearly that one Ignan’s first day on the job–that’s totally the “What is this, get it OFF of me” pose, and the one helping them is finding it amusing because every rookie reacts like that the first time they get magma on them.
I do also like the way the Ignan in the foreground is looking up at Rakhn’s throne, as if thinking to themself, “WTF is He *doing*?!”
It’s funny how the common consensus seems to be that lava is considered to be essentially mud to the natives. Hard to brush out of their hair, easily brushed off while still leaving a mess to be cleaned, and more a nuisance that needs janitors than any real concern.
GOD, KENDAL! You don’t take things easy, do you?
You know, I was not expecting natives. It’s fascinating to read from the comments that this part of the volcano is COLD to them
So wait. If the caldera is actually /too cold/ for these mask wearing folk, and they can just casually brush lava off like it’s nothing… Can they /swim/ in lava? Do they take baths in lava?!
Well, about as well as you might swim in mud or thick syrup, depending on how viscous the lava is.
That said, I am all for the idea of volcanic ignans having a dip in lava in the open caldera as their equivalent of ice swimming.
Kendal looks so pretty
I’ve talked a lot about how Red draws Aurora way too stylized for me to get thirsty over the characters, but I’m starting to understand what hornier people are seeing.
My soul yearns to swim in some lava
So all this talk of these Ignans being adapted to hot made me think: why would a volcanic eruption be an issue for them? It’s *because* lava is like mud to them. An eruption would basically engulf them and their houses in mud, causing them to drown or to be displaced out into what to them is a frigid wasteland. And it’s starting to look like it might happen anyway if Rakhn gets too worked up from the “distraction” fight
