Although,,, if he wasn’t still somewhat in control, wouldn’t he just eat Kendal whole? That’s a hella careful way to pick up a sword for a giant fire monster.
Yeah its pretty funny that in panel 3 he sorta looks like his head’s tilted in a “What’s this” expression, panel four sorta looks like “Tasty! I hope he doesn’t mind”. I think its because I’m seeing the void on the face as his eyes which is sorta giving panel 4 dainix massive malformed anime eyes.
Out of curiosity, how many people saw this and thought Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and how many thought Attack on Titian?
Oh my, he’s huge! Those crazy void-laced eyes in panel 4 are terrifying; brings to mind both cave crawlers and the Champion’s words a while back about no mortal principals can hold against unending hunger. Slightly comedic not only how he’s daintily picking up the sword, but that Kendal’s still holding onto it. Is he still conscious to a degree?
I bet void’s consumption property is responsible for that; it’s influence making Crucible Dainix not just burn the boat, but assimilate it’s mass into himself. I wonder what would happen if he assimilated other elements into him in a similar manner. Stone for a more stable and workable fire? Life for flames that can adapt to their surroundings? Lighting for fast moving fire? Interesting possibilities.
With Kendal in the state he’s in, the best person to get Dainix under control is Falst. However, I am concerned about leaving Tess and Erin alone with no V.D. counters; I get Alinua needs to help Kendal, but still. I suppose their logic is that with the Champion blasted away and the hull relatively intact, they have time to do this then get back to shore before anything happens.
Though I wonder, has Alinua forgotten her vision of Nessie in all this? Does Kendal still have that ghost warning in the forefront of his mind?
Chekhov’s sea serpent has not been triggered yet @Evil Tree, give Red her time to work it in.(smile)
I noticed Fire Dainix’s right eye is overflowing with fire, which might indicate he is overly fixated and needs someone to bring some balance to his mind or a different perspective.
Kendal had his ‘father’ taken forcefully from him. His only connection to Vash is the sword. Kendal will not let go of the sword even if Knocked Out (KOed). (At least here and now.)
A-ah. That’s… not good. Although that describes everything so far in this chapter.
Are they going to have an underwater arc without Erin and Tess? Is it going to be like in the caves where half the party is doing adventuring and the other half occasionally is checked in on as they do slower paced, equally important stuff?
Oh wow! Dainix clearly fighting for “control”, or maybe underlying instincts that aren’t overridden? He’s soo careful not to even *touch* Kendal, and gets that increasingly manic look in panel 4 when closing in on the sword. Reminds me of when Erin first got possessed, where he could partially influence his own walking, and telling people to stay back. But more, fighting with the self and its instincts, rather than with a separate intelligence. Neat.
Dainix’s crucible form is incredibly drawn! So many different layers that build up his form, somehow managing to look like an uncontrolled inferno, a humanoid figure, and also suffused with a novel bit of void! Hopefully that last bit gets transmuted back when he cools off… Otherwise it makes light magic *far* more dangerous to him.
Just had a thought: what even *happens* when a void being consumes starmetal/fire? The only intersection of the two was Glorp getting burned, and that certainly wasn’t anything close to pure void. There seems to be some kind of “conservation of magic energy” in the universe, with Dainix’s fire growing as it consumes more of the boat and incorporating transmuted void, with everything else involving the ambient magic in the area.
But, Vash made starmetal/fire seem almost like an infinite energy source, only degrading his body a little bit in the process. And so far, nothing has implied that star energy suffused the environment at all. So, could starmetal be an incredibly energy dense fuel source?? That would make sense with how badly the void dragon wants to consume it, but it makes me think that if Dainix *does* eat the sword, the loss of said item might be the least of everyone’s problems…
Other than his obvious strong emotional attachment to the sword, I’m thinking it might be an instinct from his origins as a war body for Vash? Not dropping your sword accidentally seems like a good feature for a combat body to have, along with all the other features like starmetal-laced bones, prodigious strength, minimal need for food, air, or sleep, etc. So his muscles are preprogrammed to unconsciously keep a tight grip on it! Or something!
The black-veined, burning demon towers
Over Kendal, unconscious on the deck.
Claws pinch his sword, raise it to the maw,
His hand still clutching it a speck.
Ohhh shiny….. Also, Dainix looks a lot bigger than the last time he transformed. I love how Kendal wont even let go of the sword when he’s unconscious. That’s devotion.
As I implied in my comment above, I think it’s the higher properties of the elements that will alter Dainix the most. So to go through them:
Wind = Communication: Maybe gives Dainix keener insight into his opponents, or facilitate communication between others and his crucible form?
Stone = Stability: Gives his fire a more solid and stable form? Mixed with fire’s transmutation powers it might even turn a perfect forge for metals.
Water = Mirroring: Phase changing allowing easier morphing while in Crucible form? Apply water’s mirror of Transmutation to regular fire Transmutation for more consistency?
Lightning = Attraction/Repulsion: Fire that can more faster and more directly? Interfere with mental and nerve connections as it burns like Erin’s fire-lightning attacks on the Glort?
Life = Adaptation: Fire that can change to best fit its environment or opponent perhaps? Becoming hotter, more viscous, adapting to burn what it can?
Could that be what we’re seeing here? Instead of transmuting Void into something else, Dainix is inadvertently (and inexpertly) strengthening and purifying it? If this Void is purged from him after this fight, will it even behave like regular Void?
I think we’re just seeing the result of Light being transmuted into Void. That IS how this all started anyway.
In the case of other elements, I can definitely see how Fire might purify or transmute them. Fire boils the impurities out of water and smelts ore down to metal. It transmutes oxygen into carbon dioxide (or whatever the Aurora version would be), and apparently positively charged lightning into negatively charged lightning? Not sure what it does to Life. Reduces organic matter to ash, which fertilises soil, like after a volcanic eruption? Speaking of…
To quote Red, “Water is good at lots of things, but in the long term, it’s best at erosion”.
Water’s main gimmick, short term anyway, is the ability to imperfectly mirror the other elements, mirroring stone as ice, wind as steam, it can change it’s form to fit it’s surroundings like life, etc. Phase changing to many different forms and states of matter.
Erosion is something Water represents too, but is difficult to invoke on small scales and takes a long time. For flashy here-and-now mage stuff, the mirroring powers are the most relevant to magic.
Dainix. Dainix no. Dainix, that sword is not a snack.
I do think it’s interesting that he went for the sword and not Kendal himself. Is there still a part of him that doesn’t want to eat or harm his friends? Is a sliver of his heart still awake in that inferno of consumption?
I really, really hope that Alinua and Falst are able to save Kendal and Dainix.
Did Crucible see the sword make fancy fire and go “Ooh, WANT” or something? Calling it Crucible because I don’t have the impression of that being Dainix at the moment.
The way I see this is more like, this don’t look good, I better lift him to safety and going “ohh, I’m all fire, better not touch him let’s lift him by the sword instead”
Greetings fellow fans of Aurora, I would just like to ask your opinions on my theories for the story (also first comment woooo)
[Kendal] I think that Kendal was formed like a Sentinel, I think Vash’s incarnation had a soul barrier but it was degrading since there was no soul anymore, then Alinua healed the body and fixed the soul barrier and thus Kendal was stable. (See Erin talking about Alinua healing Kendal during the caves chapters, sorry can’t remember which one)
[Alinua] Hers is pretty short but I think how she survived and didn’t go Chimera was because she accepted her magic (and therefore life) rather then rejecting the magic outburst like the rest
[Erin] Unsure what his backstory is but I’m willing to wait to find that out. I think however that when we reach the monks I think the only way to seal the dragon (if there is one at all) is cut Erin’s magic completely (which he obviously won’t take)
[Falst] Not much to say here either, but I think his light magic comes from his curses age (but might also be from ancestors)
[The Gilded, Galvanic, Goku Girl, aka Tess] She has very little on the surface but I think I noticed something big. While Erin was looking through the archive, there is a chart of the world with the primordials and the dragon. Only three of the Primordials were coloured, Life for Alinua/ The Collector, Fire for Dainix (more later) and Lightning! Tess is the only lightning mage we know and the whole chosen by the sky thing is quirky so I think that The lightning Primordial has something to do with it but I’m not sure. P.s. She is my fav
[Dainix] I think that Caliban is trying to remake Fire, as in the Primordial. This is out there but I think it’s possible, firstly it’s the only thing to resemble Dainix’s fire form, secondly He tanked a full void blast and kept on trucking and finally the diagram mentioned earlier. I do have another theory if this one does end up being wrong though, I think that it could also be very literal and soul fire could be the soul and the godly fire of Caliban to make this powerhouse, this would also explain these feats.
Vash wouldn’t have been able to use the body if that were true, Alinua is still terrifed by her powers secretly, Light powers must be giftef, that could happen(but I would hate it), that’s true in some way but lightning is dead, Caliban does not control who is born a crucible and why would they need Fire back?
there are 2 kinds of metal in this boat: shipwreck and art if you gotta eat one of them eat the shipwreck. WHAT YOU CURRENTLY HAVE IN YOUR MOUTH IS ART
Hello fellow fans of Aurora, I would like to discuss some of my theories and get some outside opinions on them please (First message wooooo)
[Kendal] I think he works like a sentinel, when Vash’s soul was taken, I think the body had a decaying soul barrier and thus was dying, then Alinua came and healed the body and the soul barrier in the process, making him stable (see Erin talking to Alinua during cave section, sorry can’t remember page)
[Alinua] I think the reason why she can connect with life and not be a chimera is because she accepted the surge of life magic rather then rejecting it like the others, you would probably try to reject wild magic bursting from you aswell so I think this is solid
[Erin] Not much to say here, I’m looking forward to hearing his backstory, but I think that once they get to the monks, the only way of sealing the dragon (if there is one at all) is to lock off all his soul channels and make it so he can’t use magic, he would clearly not accept this and so he goes to the other options he has thought of
[Falst] Not much here either, but I think his light magic comes from his will and the ancient tech recognising him is either reacting to his curse, or the light magic because the stones looked like light magic lacrimas. I don’t think he has ancient ancestors, it seems too out of left field, but he could and I wouldn’t object
[The Gilded, Galvanic, Goku Girl, a.k.a Tess] She doesn’t have much on the surface but I think there is something big underneath. When Erin was looking through the archives, he found a map of the world showing the primordials and void. Only 3 primordials had colour, Life (Alinua/The Collecter) Fire (Dainix, more later) and Lightning! Tess is the only lightning mage we have met and we don’t really understand how being chosen by the sky works, so I think she has some connection to the Lightning primordial that she doesn’t know about. P.s. she is my fav
[Dainix] I think Caliban is trying to remake Fire. As in the Primordial, and I have a few reasons why: Fire is the only thing we have seen that looks like Dainix crucible form, he tanked a void blast and kept on trucking, previously mentioned diagram (see Tess) and the fact that when void saw Dainix crucible form, he kept on referring to it as a shard of fire. It is a little out there however, it could be that the name is very literal and soul fire is a mix of the soul and Caliban’s godly fire, this would lead to the same result as gods aren’t affected by void as much, but it wouldn’t explain the diagram.
Wow! Lots of interesting theories. Theorycrafting is honestly my favorite part of reading this story. Though, it’s hard to pick a least favorite aspect of it!
Anyways, here’s my take on those theories:
Kendal: I like the idea of a degrading soul barrier. It makes sense if he was slowly dying, but we didn’t get much evidence for or against it before Alinua lost control and changed how he worked.
Alinua: I think there is something different about her that allowed her to not form chimeras, but before she lost control her personality was to be *very* shut off, and with as tight of a grip as she could manage on her powers. If anything, I think she’s the *least* likely to embrace it.
Erin: Would not be surprised if he had to lose his magic in the attempt to seal the dragon. But I think he’s surprisingly self-sacrificing, and would do what needs to be done in the end. Though, not before exhausting every other option.
Falst: There *has* to be some other reason for his light magic. Was that why the robots recognized him? Or do they recognize Ferins as closer to Ancients than anyone else (*old* bloodline curse maybe causing other traits to persist?)? I thought that a large portion of people in the world have Ancient ancestors, when you go back far enough.
Tess: I honestly have no clue. To me, seems like a run-of-the-mill “chosen by the sky” metalcaste (somehow almost mundane in this group). But with the incredibly high concentration of one-in-existence people in her party, it’s possible there’s something else.
Dainix: He’s not alone in being a “demon”! The whole reason he’s tagging along with the party is to go see the soulshaper monks, and Erin mentioned a “Treatise on Soulfire” from an unusual “fire mage”! I love him so much, even if he is currently more fire-like than usual.
I kind of hadn’t made the connection between star metal and stars until now. I suspect that VD might want something a bit more different from Kendal, though. In 1-18-2, he says there is something in Kendal that “I haven’t tasted in a very long time” while his eyes reflect some sort of blue. I think it would be pretty lame if this line wound up referring to the star metal in his bones, specially when earlier he said that this “something” is inside Kendal instead of himself (so instead of void) (or if not instead of void, still close enough in importance to be mentioned).
Something that made him more than merely a creature not created by him. I have no idea what that could be, but I think it might be related to why the Collector is so interested in finding out where Kendal’s soul came from. If it’s something VD can recognize and that the Collector, who’s spent centuries studying the soul, doesnt know about…
Early >:3
so true bestie
And Void corruption is definitely setting in, Dainix looks like he wants to eat the starmetal sword.
He looks more transparent than before. Like the fire is smoldering I guess.
Oh right, void’s purpose in life is to eat starmetal. I guess Dainix is currently not in charge then.
Fire is also known for consumption. Kind of a double whammy for Dainix.
Fire is known for Transmutation. In this case, it seems like Dainix is transforming into a Void being.
That’ll be fun when he turns back.
Dainix looks more angry than anything else to me. Like the starmetal and the soul fire that comes from it is inherently upsetting in some way.
Fair enough. I guess its just because I’d think an angry Dainix would be less delicate
Omnomnomnom
I see the soulfire is curious what the starlight tastes like. I suspect it might give it an indigestion
Ooh dainix tryna eat the starmetal sword, that’s interesting, so that’s what Void contamination does.
Y’know, I forgot Void’s entire raison d’etre was eating stars…
Feeeeed me Keeendal
“Feed me!”
“Does it have to be Starmetal?”
“Feed me!”
“Does it have to be mine?”
For some reason this has me imagining Kirby Dainix sucking up Kendal and become Kenby Dainix
I don’t think so, maybe he is trying to transmute or change his fire to burn out the void by awakening the starfire in the sword, maybe.
I mean wouldn’t that just transmute into more void or something?
Himst just a hungy boi :[
gods forbid a void-flame do anything
No! Stop! Bad, Dainix! That is not a toothpick!

The Light Dragon’s words, rather.
Chekhov’s sea serpent has not been triggered yet @Evil Tree, give Red her time to work it in.(smile)
I noticed Fire Dainix’s right eye is overflowing with fire, which might indicate he is overly fixated and needs someone to bring some balance to his mind or a different perspective.

the third panel is so beautiful and horrifying at the same time
A-ah. That’s… not good. Although that describes everything so far in this chapter.
Are they going to have an underwater arc without Erin and Tess? Is it going to be like in the caves where half the party is doing adventuring and the other half occasionally is checked in on as they do slower paced, equally important stuff?

NO DAINIX DON’T EAT THAT KENDAL’S STILL ATTACHED TO IT (Seriously, how is his grip that strong while unconscious??)
Notes on Ship: Very flammable
More Notes: what didn’t burn melted. Maybe try tungsten?
Look at that gradual opacity of fire-giant Dainix!
The black-veined, burning demon towers
Over Kendal, unconscious on the deck.
Claws pinch his sword, raise it to the maw,
His hand still clutching it a speck.
Looming, void-shot, the Demon blazes
Grabs Sword-Kendal, which seemingly amazes
The art is gorgeous! The action being contemplated/attempted is terrible! I love your art Red!
“Hmm. This is thing that stab friend.
Eat thing, friend no get stab.”
Ohhh shiny….. Also, Dainix looks a lot bigger than the last time he transformed. I love how Kendal wont even let go of the sword when he’s unconscious. That’s devotion.
Yoink
mmm snack time 😀
I wonder why dain’s gotten scaled up? Is it the result of him eating the boat?the void? Who knows!
Aurora Question #27: What sorts of abilities do you think Crucible Dainix would gain from absorbing and integrating other elements, if possible?
I’d like to see Danix as fire that electrocutes anyone he touches
Maybe stone could make him more magma-like?
You ever see those experiments that kids do for the science fair and make fire turn different colors? That.
But in all seriousness, lightning magic might make the fire easier to spread/faster burning. I think that would be cool.
As soon as I finished typing this, I discovered some interesting bits from some tumblr asks that might be relevant:
https://comicaurora.tumblr.com/post/625662006403416064/youve-mentioned-before-that-the-elemental-magics
“It (Fire) can also temper other elements, strengthening and purifying them.”
https://comicaurora.tumblr.com/post/635808568329863168/so-are-there-general-laws-of-physics-in-auroras
“Fire is capable of transmuting one form of Lightning into its opposite.”

Thank you for posting links to Red’s Lore @Evil Tree. Very Insightful!
Wasn’t water changed to destruction or erosion?
To quote Red, “Water is good at lots of things, but in the long term, it’s best at erosion”.
Water’s main gimmick, short term anyway, is the ability to imperfectly mirror the other elements, mirroring stone as ice, wind as steam, it can change it’s form to fit it’s surroundings like life, etc. Phase changing to many different forms and states of matter.
Erosion is something Water represents too, but is difficult to invoke on small scales and takes a long time. For flashy here-and-now mage stuff, the mirroring powers are the most relevant to magic.
There’s also the fact that “Erosion” is just a very long, very slow form of Transmutation that only goes in the one direction.
Also, while Mimicry is more relevant for spell casting, Erosion does come up in the element corruption. To wit: Tarren
On an unrelated note: what does tumblr mean when it says “rate limit exceeded”?
Is there no alt-text for today?
there is! It’s “om nom nooooo” 🙂

In here, we can see Dainix getting really hot while examining Kendal’s long, hard sword
JAIL-
I’ve heard of fire swallowing, and sword swallowing.
But a fire swallowing a sword?
Wheres his legs?
I think he is crawling
om nom nom
That third panel is gorgeous and terrifying.
Dainix.
I don’t know if we cn still say he’s a “lucky guy”
I mean Danix clearly listened to Kendal last time he was a full-blown fire monster on 1.17.37. Maybe Falst can help this time?
Did Crucible see the sword make fancy fire and go “Ooh, WANT” or something? Calling it Crucible because I don’t have the impression of that being Dainix at the moment.
Hes got the dragon’s hunger for stars, kind of like a cave crawler. It is Dainix, just overwhelmed by emotion
The way I see this is more like, this don’t look good, I better lift him to safety and going “ohh, I’m all fire, better not touch him let’s lift him by the sword instead”

I would love to hear all of your takes on these.
And know you all are awesome
Dang this was long
I love him so much, even if he is currently more fire-like than usual.
he big
He big!!
Dainix, no! Bad Dainix! Drop it!
would.
Fair, I mean look at that hair.
If it’s something VD can recognize and that the Collector, who’s spent centuries studying the soul, doesnt know about…
“Oh, just what I needed! A tooth pick!”
I’m trusting my emotional stability in Alinua and Falst because I’m SCARED for Dainix (pretend this is a crying emoji)
NO. PUT THAT DOWN. :0
So Dainix got bigger. If they let him burn long enough and consume enough stuff, do we get a massive, flaming kaiju?
You’re not you when you’re hungry, Dainix!!
Of course, as soon Dainix gets some void in him he gets all hungry and omnomnom.
