My money’s on Kendal tanking the beam, then Alinua catches him with a plant or twenty, and the light dragon either leaves, thinking that the that is done away with, or gets interrupted by whatever it was that Alinua felt 3-ish comics ago.
I feel like either he plans to take the beam or try to get everyone off the ship. Splitting the beam wouldn’t work cause he’s on the boat, and this doesn’t seem like the kind of thing he could swat away like he’s Frieza. I’d put my money on jumping in the ocean, but fuckin’ then what? Does Dainix just get extinguished and die? I don’t think he knows about Falst’s light stuff, or Aliuna’s incoming fish. Very excited and very confused.
. Kendal’s face is grim. He abruptly yanks the Champion’s arm upwards, off of his neck.
. “You—!” The Light Dragon cries in surprise.
. Then he twists, flinging the Champion away from him, using the force of his throw to launch himself backwards towards the boat.
. “…Such loyalty,” the Lady murmurs, watching Kendal as he plummets towards the burning ship. The light still gathers in his mouth. “Whatever you are… he did not deserve you.”
Not me waking up at 2, deciding to wait till 3 to see if it actually posts at 3 for me, then having to go to sleep with THIS on my mind 😭
…Nevermind, not going to sleep. Let’s write this!
…okay. Starfire block, Kendal? What’s your plan here?
The yeet panel! It’s the yeet panel! Finally!
This is the earliest I’ve ever posted a page, …yay?
Uh… not a lot of other thoughts for this… I wonder when the serpent will come in
Hey Cat! If you put the link to your doc in the url thingy at the bottom under where you write your Email for commenting, it’ll turn your name orange and we can click on your name and it will take us to that link (like mine!!)
I’m finding it really interesting to parse out the different points of view between Anakin and LD. Because they’re aligned, but they’re distinct characters. And with VD and Erin being basically opposed characters the subtleties can slip by if I’m not careful.
Trying to get Dainix to turn back with an impromptu trust fall? A risky gambit Kendal.
Yeah, no way was Kendal about to surrender Erin to the Champion, neither was he going to kill this man who doesn’t really want to harm any of them. In breaking free, Kendal has put himself between the Champion and the soon-to-be-former Ship of Fools; I reckon his plan is to use starfire to counter, or at least lessen, the Champion’s attack.
… Wait a minute. Character with blast attack firing + other character with blast attack firing = DBZ-style beam struggle. IS THIS THE ANIME BIT RED WAS TEASING ABOUT?!
Interesting how L.D. has taken over speaking; a consequence for her lending the Champion her strength perhaps? Her comment on loyalty is also interesting; does she recognise Kendal is choosing to help them rather than being programmed to? In any case she’s no closer to knowing what Kendal is, but if my starfire idea above comes true, a power I’m sure she can’t attribute to V.D., it might force her to think outside the box.
Prediction for next week: DBZ beam struggle of Light Vs. Starfire, as mentioned above. The real unknown factor is Nessie below them, and when they’ll make their appearance. Given how deep sea creatures hate bright light, as Erin alluded to earlier, they might not take too kindly to these two lighting up everything.
Falst probably knows how or could kind of struggle and stay afloat because he probably ran into a creek (or was taught how to swim) at some time in his life. Erin might have been taught, but he was (and is) a non-athletic, glass cannon mage, so he probably isn’t a very strong swimmer. Also, he is currently unconscious. I doubt that Dainix can swim; he seems scared of the water and also lived in the desert for most of his life. Similarly, Alinua lived in a forest most of her life and didn’t travel as much as Falst probably did, but I’m pretty sure she had adoptive parents before that (I think, I’ll have to fact-check this), so they may have taught her? Tess and Kendal have metal in them, so even if they know how to swim, they probably will just end up sinking.
I do believe that red did state that Tess can swim! Just poorly. Other than that Falst can nigh certainly swim because regardless of whether he dislikes water or not he would figure it’s a valuable skill to have. Alinua and Erin I would think they might’ve gotten the chance to learn how to swim at least once but I could also see it being that that’s not the case. Kendal will undoubtedly sink (star metal) and Dainix nearly drowned so I highly doubt he ever got over that fear.
Kendal- depending how much Vash knew about swimming might know the basics but given Vash could just release his physical form Vash may have never bothered to try. On the plus side Kendal doesn’t need to breath and may not have a crush depth threshold. On the down side he might not find some one to guide him to land/surface (but unlikely since the nature spirits and lesser gods are VERY interested to stop the Collector even if they don’t know what her plans are – what the Collector has done so far makes them afraid for their future.)
Alinua- since she has been a hermit and recluse after leaving her foster parents (who I assumed loved her, call me the back end of a donkey for assuming) might be able to tread water clumsily but might do better with Primordial Life’s help.
Tess- she is wanderer so she probably knows the basics but we don’t know how buoyant she is or isn’t. On the other hand being ‘chosen of lighting’ could mean she can run on water (like certain comic book heroes).
Falst- Has shown no hesitation to use water to his advantage. Such as avoiding Tess in Arc One. I assume he is as good as a commando in stealthy escape or infiltrate and has good endurance and a keen mind to use the environment to his advantage.
Erin- As a scholar/investigator I am sure he planned contingencies and may even know how to swim and deal with it with magic in a variety of ways. The Void Dragon (called Walter by those commentors who find it contemptable for various reasons) could do things to make sure Erin survives but might not work out for others.
Finally Dainix the Desert Dweller is the most problematic one. If he had not been transformed into the Crucible then he might have been able to grab on to something and float. Given that his transformation is tied to his emotional state somewhat if he tries to suppress his power he begins to sink and panic. On the other hand as Fire he could spread himself out and just float on the surface of the water possibly.
As for Cecil the Seasick Sea Serpent (the sad eyed ocean creature) she/he/it seems to swim like a fish and the Champion flies on wings of light.
Kendal – Hampered by his starmetal bones and extra-durable dense build, but he can walk on the bottom of the ocean for a while and is resilient under the barometric pressure increase.
Alinua – Probably a bit, but not well.
Erin – He’d be able to tread water if he were conscious; he’s not strong or especially good at it, but he was taught.
Falst – Passable swimmer, was a necessary survival skill, does not enjoy it.
Dainix – Not at all. Probably has near-drowning-related trauma and hasn’t set foot near large bodies of water since.
Tess – Can just barely swim, but being metal caste means she has the same problem as Kendal: she’s dense and doesn’t float as easily.
These are just hypotheses and wild guesswork about their densities/skills. Oh, to add on: I think if Erin doesn’t wake up, he’s sunk. Also: Dainix in Crucible can burn at the bottom of the ocean, so if he stays in Crucible, he won’t be swimming, per se, he’ll just burn down there until he either makes it ashore or flames out. The latter would be bad. Very bad. Bad for Dainix on several levels.
Wait, Kendal is immune to light, this was established
Or is this some other attack?
And when is the Kraken gonna interrupt the fun?
This is great and I can’t believe it’s gonna escalate even further
Kendal is immune to the light’s effect on the mind, he can still bê affected by constructs and blasts of it, its like How he wont bê consumed by void but It still burns him
The Yeet has arrived! But it is not as Yeety as I expected, and everyone’s still very much in danger. *chews nails*
(This whole sequence, from the calm before the storm onward, has been soooo good. I’m on the edge of my seat with every update. The character moments! The changes of fortune! The unexpected abilities! The logic and illogic and moral dilemmas, ahhhh! When we get to a resolution I’m re-reading the whole thing at pace.)
Kendal: sinks like a rock
Alinua: mayybbbee she’ll know how to swim? maybe???
Erin: he probably got taught how to swim when he was younger but idk if that’ll be much help here in the choppy ocean waters
Falst: luckily he probably knows how to swim if 1.11.21-1.11.27 are anything to go by, although as i said before any swimming skill the floof squad might have will probably be renderd useless due to the chaotic ocean
Tess: same as Kendal
Dainix: is currently made of fire, which i /would/ (hopefully the italics worked) say would make it impossible to swim although we’ve learned before that soulfure can burn under the ocean so he’ll hopefully be fine
whoops just remembered that Erin’s currently passed out and passed out people can’t swim (i think) so that’s unfortunate :/
For a guy who spends so much time throwing ‘noble paladin’ key-words at people, man sure does seem to be cool with murdering people he explicitly calls out as innocent or good on whim.
Even if the void dragon is as dangerous as you seem to think, you are literally isolated out at sea. He’s unconscious on the boat. You can’t take like…five minutes to try and talk your way AROUND the acknowledged good people instead of trying to mow through them? Really?
I mean I’m just saying, historically leaving burning villages and the corpses of the common folk in your wake is not a sign of the forces of justice no matter how much you sigh about the tragedy of it after.
I think it’s quite unfair to say he’s murdering people on a whim. Couple reasons:
He tried for 27 pages not to mow through them, and they all did their damndest to make it as hard as possible for him.
The boat is currently covered in a void-infested, sentient fire hellbent on killing him. He couldn’t get close enough to talk to them now if he wanted to.
Last time he saw Tess, she lighting-punched him through a metal wall. She definitely wouldn’t like him more now.
Erin may be unconscious, but why would he think the Void Dragon is?
Kendal has proven himself very immune to anything the champion has attempted telling him. Even if he somehow could get close and didn’t die in a second, he’d be legitimately delusional to still think he could talk Kendal into letting him attack Erin.
WE of course know that there is something he should really really hear about this group of people, but there’s nothing left for him to say to them.
It occurs to me that Primordials (or at least the Primordial Dragons) do NOT function in this world the way the gods do, and Lucy at least also spends no effort to get to know any of the gods. Because the gods have been trading stories about Kendal for a while now, and they can spot him like a beacon because whatever he is, he’s not a mortal and he’s not a god. They see him easily. But Lucy doesn’t. The only thing she seems to sense is whether her power is in someone, and it isn’t in Kendal, so Kendal isn’t a person. And she hasn’t heard the stories about Vash’s incarnate body taking on a life of his own.
She’s either unable to interact directly with the gods, or doesn’t bother. Dedicated herself completely to stopping Walter I guess, to the point of completely ignoring anything else.
probably a mixture of can’t communicate and doesn’t bother, we never saw the primordials speaking to people who aren’t hosting them when they aren’t in control of their host, this would mean that in order to talk to the gods lucy would have to take over michael
Yesterday I was thinking “grab the hair! Misdirect the shot upward!”
But I suspect that just kicks the can down the road. We’ve had no evidence yet (and some counter-evidence in VD) that the dragons here can’t do their breath weapons at LEAST D&D-frequency (that is, with a cooldown of 1d4+1 rounds). As little as 12 seconds later we’d probably be in the same place but with LD more annoyed.
Kendallllll! What did we say about self sacrifice! You better have a plan to split the beam in two with your sword or something
I’m laying odds that he can block the attack with his starfire lit sword.
I bet my bottom dollar that some cool blue beem erupts from his sword to counter magic dragon fire
Are we going to get a beam struggle? Yeeeeeesssss…
My money’s on Kendal tanking the beam, then Alinua catches him with a plant or twenty, and the light dragon either leaves, thinking that the that is done away with, or gets interrupted by whatever it was that Alinua felt 3-ish comics ago.
Apologies, autocorrect.
*That the THREAT is done away with
Apologies, autocorrect…
*…that the THREAT is done away with…
My money *was* on Falst doing something interesting with light magic, but now I’m not so sure…
I mean, he’s not stupid enough to do this without a plan, but also what in the world is his plan.
I feel like either he plans to take the beam or try to get everyone off the ship. Splitting the beam wouldn’t work cause he’s on the boat, and this doesn’t seem like the kind of thing he could swat away like he’s Frieza. Very excited and very confused.
Tahraim said soulfire burns even at the bottom of the ocean
… that’s because he has no plan
With a might FWAP Kendal tears himself free
FLING:s the Champion away, falls for his loyalty
Blue-eyed Kendal somberly tears
The Champion’s hand from his throat.
Enraged the Champion flings him down
Towards the burning boat.
“Such loyalty,” the Dragon thinks,
Watching Kendal fall.
“He did not deserve you,” it muses,
Jaws blazing amid the squall.
For mobile readers.
Alt-text: in the storyboard that sound effect was “yeet”

My awful sleeping habits have returned, but at least I have aurora (red it looks great btw :))
Me too! I have no business being up at this hour when I have to leave for work in less than 4 hours. At least I’m in good company? (and SO worth it).
realllllll
Oooh! He did not yeet the Champion, but himself at the ship!
What’s Kendal’s plan here? See if Mysterious Light Type is weak to Starfire Type?
I assume one of them has a plan
To the place
I belong
West Virginia!
Mountain mama,
Please take me home,
Country roads!
Classic Kendal
(NO DONT THROW YOURSELF INTO THE DEATH CANNON THAT SHIT CAN KILL YOU)
So… who else has a sneaking suspicion that Kendal’s gonna parry the light beam attack?
*raises a hand*
*also raises hand*
*raises both hands*
*does a handstand to raise both feet*
*Raises hand cause everybody else is doing it and now I see it
*raises whole body*
*plops butt down and raises hands and legs (fingers and toes included altho i have no idea how that’s gonna work)*
Well.
One cliffhanger gone, one more to go.
Kendal looks so done in the first panel he’s like >:\
Why is that so accurate though-
I’m finding it really interesting to parse out the different points of view between Anakin and LD. Because they’re aligned, but they’re distinct characters. And with VD and Erin being basically opposed characters the subtleties can slip by if I’m not careful.

Lucy Said that “the burden would be her’s alone, she probably took over michael to spare him the guilt of killing the floof squad
That’s what I think too, the Light Dragon is fully possessing the Champion right now
get yoink yeeted idiot
Yes, we had one cliffhanger but what about second cliffhanger?
STARFIRE IT UP! GIVE US A BEAM STRUGGLE!
Beam clash time!!!!!!!
Aurora Question #23: Welp, place your bets everyone, how well does each member of the floof squad swim?
Falst probably knows how or could kind of struggle and stay afloat because he probably ran into a creek (or was taught how to swim) at some time in his life. It’s time for a good old fashioned game of Zelda ping pong.
Kendal: sinks like a rock
Alinua: mayybbbee she’ll know how to swim? maybe???

crap that was supposed to be a reply to Question Master, sorry : (
my first reply didnt come through so im trying again:
whoops this comment was meant to be a reply to Question Master sorry
They always come through, you just have to wait for the cache to catch up. And Red has gone on record as saying that the cache is ridiculously strong
Damn, He can’t bring himself to save them, so he will die with them.
That’s certainly what the Light Dragon thinks is happening.
A beam struggle? Scaled thing, save me from this tedium!
here’s hoping kendal learns to fly
Hey Red, how’s it feel to draw all of those shining light effects all the time? 😛
I do like how Kendal seems to so casually shrug off the grip the Paladin had on him. Nice to see our boy still holding back.
I know how frequently wrong Kendall has been about what he can and cannot tank, but I think (mostly hope) he can tank this one
There once was a Paladin elite
Who justice is determined to mete.
Charging a beam
Of light is his scheme,
But Kendal interferes with a yeet!
don’t worry guys im sure falst can master light magic in the next ten seconds and save everyone. hes a smart kid itll be fine
Beam struggle! Beam struggle! Beam struggle! Beam struggle!
For a guy who spends so much time throwing ‘noble paladin’ key-words at people, man sure does seem to be cool with murdering people he explicitly calls out as innocent or good on whim.

The other dragon is the one okay with obliterating innocents. She took over because the champion didn’t have the stomach for it
I think it’s quite unfair to say he’s murdering people on a whim. Couple reasons:
He tried for 27 pages not to mow through them, and they all did their damndest to make it as hard as possible for him.

Dot rem: font. When Erin’s body said no more, it was Voidness that was making the passing out quip.
Parry the beam with a sword!!!
oh my god, please say beam struggle
Well, wherever this is going it’s probably better than a full-on loss. (though the LEVIATHAN, LEVIATHAN down below hasn’t been addressed yet.)
oh what a page. We finally get the “yeet!” panel!
I’m hyped for a beam struggle. Thats more exciting to me than the cliffhanger lol
TL;DR: I’m free fallin’
Good song.
Think they count Kendal among the Innocent now?
Come on Me dal, let’s see a mid air party for a lazer. This will be so much fun!
Yeet
It occurs to me that Primordials (or at least the Primordial Dragons) do NOT function in this world the way the gods do, and Lucy at least also spends no effort to get to know any of the gods. Because the gods have been trading stories about Kendal for a while now, and they can spot him like a beacon because whatever he is, he’s not a mortal and he’s not a god. They see him easily. The first dragon spoke to the Twins somehow in the prologue. I just remembered
I’m voting for boat flip.
Kendal’s made of metal, and falling how many feet? Might be enough to cause some motion.
I was definitely thinking that there were decent odds Kendal would go straight through the boat if it were made entirely of wood.
Also, just thinking about it. Kendal’s body was a deliberately made unit, originally non sentient. Would that make him like a “Ken Doll”?
Ken only has a good day when the tortured spirits of his hometown tell him it’s okay to be happy
For those postulating a DBZ-style beam struggle – hasn’t Red said the Starfire takes some time to warm up?
