That’s almost 40° C for normal people around the world…. Jokes.
I don’t understand exactly what he’s doing, I’d he’s channeling energy away from the ship (to the point of healing Dainix’s corruption) why does it make a beam?
Dainix doesn’t have elemental corruption, he’s just a demon. demons are ruled by emotion, so his unease and fear at the situation is causing him to transform slightly.
Erin is creating one hell of a shield for at least 4 elements at the same time. that requires opening his soul channels to let energy flow through, and he has sealing tattoos. sealing tattoos are used when channeling energy becomes too dangerous for a mage, and they need to restrict the flow of energy until they want it. so the fact he’s opening 4/6 of them all at once, constantly, to power a spell large enough to encompass the whole ship means he’s putting quite the strain on his soul.
the beam is probably just to show how much energy is being moved at once. or maybe it’s the runes Erin is using to cast the spell? he tends to write them on the air so that it’s easier to cast specific things. but i kind of doubt that he has a spell prepared for this specific situation, so he’s probably coming up with this on the fly.
Runes seem to be used for very controlled spells, like healing, he just seems to be using a general “go away” spell here which probably doesn’t require too much finesse. Also he probably didn’t have the time to etch the runes
Yeah, he’d be dead already. Even half of that would kill anyone pretty much instantly. The highest human body temperature of record is 46.5°C and the unfortunate person who climbed that high needed 24 days of care to recover. I think 50°C would just cook your brains off.
102.7 is a farenheit temperature, where a fever of 100 is bad, but managable. If your body temperature was 100 in any other measurement, you absolutely would be dead (or very magical, possibly)
My name is not important, and I'm not going to tell you what it is.
Everyone is staring at Erin, in shock and awe.
Falst suddenly snaps, “No way he can hold that for long. Somebody give me a heading!”
“R-right!” Alinua gasps, pushing up.
“Can we do anything about the sail?”
“Uh – I could grow something to patch it, but it’d take time—”
“Forget it. It can still do its job!”
While they talk, Dainix looks at his hand, then exhales in relief, the danger of him going Crucible gone.
“Incredible,” Kendal says, staring up and around at the ship.
“That’s one word for it,” Tess growls, rubbing her head.
“Didn’t I tell you?” Erin calls. “There’s nothing out here I can’t protect you from!” Then, as Tess approaches, “Ah- I’d suggest keeping your distance for now. I’ve got quite a lot of power circulating, and most of it isn’t–” He breaks off as Tess puts her hand on his forehead, like she’s checking his temperature.
Tess draws back for a second, in shock. Then. “Drop the spell. Right now.” She demands.
“I can handle it,” Erin mutters.
“Don’t pretend! Not to me!” Tess’s voice rings throughout the ship. “All this power, and you STILL found a way to push too far!”
Yes, I’m sure dropping that spell won’t have any negative consequences at all. Then again, I’d trust Tess to know what negative consequences NOT dropping that spell would have
Erin is more than likely suffering from acute elemental corruption right now with all 6 elements. The best way I could describe is, with all 6 elements at play, it’s basically magic sepsis.
My bet is Erin will hold this spell for about a week’s worth of pages, enough for them to make landfall at Rakhn, and then he’s gonna be out of commission for the next chapter or more.
Agreed. We don’t know how elemental corruption affects a person, just that the element within them “reacts randomly”.
As we saw with Tarren, water corruption can loosen the joints, perhaps by eroding bone and cartilage.
Lightning corruption could induce paralysis or neurodegeneration, and Fire corruption causes fevers.
Not entirely sure what Air or Stone do yet, other than breathing and bone issues.
But Life (depending on how much he’s channeling) could cause any number of mutations, chimerical or cancerous.
I don’t think this is going to become chronic for Erin, but it’s going to be a MAJOR problem for this arc.
I’m kind of hoping we get a shot where they finally get somewhere safe, and we just pan over and Erin is TKO’d.
Where there was mention of the monks being experts on his tattoos and soul channels, I’m wondering if whatever he’s done (combined with whatever happens next) is going to temporarily compromise his ability to channel at his usual levels until we reach them…or channel at all. Which would also be an interesting change from “the universe saw Erin coming an ocean away and nerfed his plan.”
I like the medical approach since it looks like she’s checking for a fever, but I’m in IT so I’ll take the engineer approach to it. My guess would be that he’s technically capable of channeling the amount of magic that he is, but that amount is outside recommended thaumaturgical voltage. Tess can tell because he’s beginning to overheat. If he were an electrical cabinet he’d blow a fuse. He’s a dude, so he’s likely to blow a cranium.
I guess that’s more EE. A more IT answer would be that he’s running too many thaumaturgical threads and overclocking his magical processor/brain. At best he can hope for an overheat shutdown, at worst his processor would burn out. Do mages’ brains run on Intel, AMD, or ARM?
That’s actually an interesting point — is there lightning jumping from Erin to Tess in that panel where she touches him, or is that just the magic circulating his body?
Yeah! Tess has been feeling a lot more serious this arc. From her expressions, to her seeming less unequivocally overall calm and above the threat attitude, to the fact that she thought this was too dangerous from the start.
My current theory is that she didn’t feel too threatened by Tynan or any of the previous threats because they were ultimately might based problems, which she doesn’t exactly lack. However, a rain of flaming rocks, a burnt sail, and whatever will happen to Erin (probably related to the chapter 22 goop backstory flashes and why he got the tattoes) are not problems she can just punch or tank through (and might have personal experience of not being able to handle them?), making this a genuinely worrying situation for her.
“No way he can hold that for long,” yells Falst.
“Somebody give me a heading!”
“R-right!” calls Alinua, moving into action,
As Dainix’s flames finish fading.
“Incredible,” says Kendal, rising to a crouch.
“That’s one word for it,” says Tess.
She marches to her brother, feels his forehead,
“Drop the spell. Right now,” she says.
It’s interesting how the Pessimist/Realist can go from being a hindrance to being Exactly What We Need Right Now at the drop of a hat without changing any part of their character, simply because the circumstances change.
Also, I claim successful prediction on Alinua being able to grow something to patch the sail, even if it was immediately dismissed because it probably wouldn’t help right this second.
That looks like a fever check. Is channeling all that magic making Erin sick?
So much wonderful character stuff in this page:
– Falst sussing out instantly that Erin can’t hold that for long or safely
– Tess cutting through Erin’s bluff and being serious with concern: “Don’t pretend. Not to me.”
– Erin’s expression when she insists on touching his forehead
– SIBLINGS YOUR HONOR
– Alinua’s help for Dainix seems to have worked! For now. Way to go Alinua!
– Dainix managed to pull together a bit, and given the evident intensity of his fear, that is extremely hard. Way to go, dude, and hang in there…
I can’t tell if Dainix has the hand on his chest to better feel and concentrate on his breathing or if he’s having chest pain or heart palpitations due to extreme stress and anxiety, but it looks clawed and grippy, which makes me think the latter or both. …Panic attack? Is Dainix staving off or riding out a panic attack? Physiological symptoms such as chest pain, heart palpitations, and overwhelming fear make me think of panic attacks and, more broadly, severe anxiety spikes. The bursting into flames would be a fantasy-specific symptom, but… yeah, this just looks kind of familiar, is all. :/
They might actually make it to calm waters. Briefly. Part of me thinks they will. The other part of me is waiting for more shoes to drop.
Fever is one of the symptoms of fire corruption, and we can assume he’s getting no shortage of the rest too. I think he is getting sick from this, and fast.
I’m actually a little disappointed that we didn’t see more of Alinua helping Dainix calm down. But I guess she just lead him through one of her old meditations. Either way, it seems to have worked (unless Erin had something to do with it?).
Dainix isn’t clutching his chest in pain or anxiety, he’s actually exhaling with relief. I’d say that’s a relaxed grip.
Took another look. Ok, I think I see what you (+ other responders) mean.
Re: the disappointment: that’s understandable, but yeah, I think she just had him doing box breathing or something similar, kind of like Tahraim’s advice to “breathe out” his anger in the first arc (though it’s not anger in this case and hopefully not fire breath). There was also so much else going on that I personally don’t mind the focus leaving Dainix to cover the other characters–namely, Erin–while still keeping time moving forward.
I didn’t realize that’s what he was thinking, the first time I read this page, but now that you’ve said it I can”t interpret his expressions any other way!
I like how Tess and Erin are interacting in this page, and it very clearly shows their dynamic as siblings. I don’t have much else to say, but I do love tiny Falst in the background panels.
Thank you, Kendal. Everything else people have said is true. No, he can’t hold that long. Yes, he has pushed it too far. But let’s take moment to appreciate the sheer, glorious power.
If I listed off all the awesome things on this page, we would be here a very long time. I’ll try to keep it short.
– the detail. The floorboards are broken beneath Tess’s elbow where she landed.
– The expressions — how do you manage to convey Tess’s staring directly at Erin in horror without pupils? The way her face shifts from anger to fear when she takes Erin’s temperature — whatever he’s done, she’s seen it before, but this is worse than she imagined. The panicked look on Erin’s face when Tess walks up to him. The way he very clearly won’t meet her eyes as he lies through his teeth.
– The interesting phrasing that’s going to be circulating my mind until Monday: “You still find a way to push too far.” Not push IT too far, not GO too far. Something about that sentence is interesting to me, and I can’t put my finger on it. Maybe it’s just me.
Erin, my dear, would you *please* stop challenging the universe. It’s just going to keep throwing shit at you until you break.
Tarren (reading Erin’s notes): Dirt below the sails to grow plants to patch holes? Wait a minute, this isn’t your handwriting.
Erin: ALINUA! (Sorry I haven’t commented in a while; work’s been super busy so I never got the change)
I get the feeling that jostle from losing the water lacrimas, and Erin’s display of power, may have knocked some sense back into Falst. He’s still his practical self minus the confrontational part; Falst knows now time is of the essence to get out of here. I wonder when they get out of this, and how much Erin’s actions will hurt him, whether Faslt will blame himself for it, blame Erin for it, or blame himself but not admit it, trying to fool himself mostly.
Ok, Dainix is has calmed down and the gang is out of danger of the ship catching on fire … for now. I wonder how much of that is due to Alinua’s calming exercises, Erin calming the ocean, and/or distracted by the awe of Erin’s magic. I worry though about Dainix blaming himself for this predicament by hiding his flare-up; the rest of the gang wouldn’t see him at fault, but he might.
I don’t think Tess is just feeling Erin’s temperature; look at the lightning around her elbow as she does it. I think she’s feeling the ambient lightning energy around Erin, like how she did around Zuurith to track Tynan, and has found something serious. Given her fighting style, it can be easy to forget that Tess is more than just a punch mage.
Prediction for next week: Two or three more pages in the storm, maybe more, before they exit it. Then Erin lets go of the spell, and any aftereffects will make themselves known immediately, either by his screams, or Tess’s. Maybe Tess tries to stop Erin, but he points out that the storm will get them if he does.
Hmmmm. Lightning magic is the magic of connection, and that higher power is what allowed the weather tower to function as a magical doppler radar. She might actually be using her lightning as a sort of detect magic… and liking what she sees even less

Long story short, please could someone screenshot this and ask Red’s opinion about it on tumblr? Thanks!

Tumblr: something something glow up

Considering the alt text, probably a fried brain, in which case the spell would drop and Erin’s dead
Oh and I love Dainix feeling better. He looks so relieved! Such a happy boy!
The glowing cracks are gone, but why is he covering his non-eyepach eye?
I think he’s just grabbing his head in panel 2, not specifically the eye
Pretty sure that eye goes fiery when he’s transforming so probably that’s why
I feel like Tess knows what she’s talking about, Erin theorists take your guesses
Erin is more than likely suffering from acute elemental corruption right now with all 6 elements. The best way I could describe is, with all 6 elements at play, it’s basically magic sepsis.

Classic 5MB work right here – Take your powerhouse out of the picture long enough for the rest to experience some genuine peril. I see you, Red.
Good job Falst kicking everyone out of their surprise
The sibling dynamic between Erin and Tess is so. so. delicious. “Don’t pretend. Not to me.” I am FERAL
An excellent portrayal of the older sister/younger brother dynamic
It wouldnt be Erin if he wasnt trying too hard, now would it?
tess stopped smiling, that’s how you KNOW things are bad

Gnrghgnhrgrn they’re siblings your honor-
I mean, they literally are, but I love all of the interactions between Tess and Erin so much

The spell holds them still, Falst requests a course of action
But it seems Tess is not fooled by Erin’s reaction
Nice! Now can the squad come up with some alternate solution besides Erin burning himself up?
Yep there it is-
That looks like a fever check. Is channeling all that magic making Erin sick?

Kendal in panel 5: “Erin is being relatable!”
Kendal in the last panel: “And people disapprove?!”
I didn’t realize that’s what he was thinking, the first time I read this page, but now that you’ve said it I can”t interpret his expressions any other way!
Gotta give it to Falst, he’s always got his head in the game
Even if his head is butting with other peoples’ heads (see every interaction he’s had with Erin since boarding the boat), at least it’s in the game
I like how Tess and Erin are interacting in this page, and it very clearly shows their dynamic as siblings. I don’t have much else to say, but I do love tiny Falst in the background panels.

…at least Dainix is better, right?
ERIN. Listen to your big sister before you fry yourself. NOW.
No no no, Tess, you don’t understand. If he says he can do it enough, it’ll be true!
OKAY HERE WE GO
The Squad FINALLY sees Erin’s potential, even if he’s breaking his limits. YES.
Falst is COMMUNICATING. YES. Dainix is CALM. YES. Tess is being a protective older sister to her idiot brother. YES.
I LOVE this page. They’ve reached the point of disaster, NOW they can work like a team.
And, leaping off the cliffs of pride, here there comes the fall. But will he stick the landing?
erin… jeez
A new chapter on my b-day? HECK YEAH!!
Happy bday!

Happy birthday!

Erin, my dear, would you *please* stop challenging the universe. It’s just going to keep throwing shit at you until you break.
TL;DR: No, sis, I can’t let you ruin the perfect chance to show off because it might not be good for my health!
I love Tess SO much.
This page is so grea, too. All the details, big and small. Characters, surroundings. Fantastic.
But Tess, oh, that BIG SISTER ENERGY. I love her so much.
(Kendal accidentally taking the trophy for Most Bishonen, yet again, by the way.)
These characters are just so good!!!
…Oh, the Life magic is to keep this shenanigan from killing him. Okay.
And he might still be suffering from all kinds of Elemental Corruption too, as has been noted.
we have thought it was Alinua on account of how much she was intervening, but I think Tess might actually be the group mom/ the adult of the team.
Whats the “mom” thing about?
I think she’s essentially using herself as an ambient magic lighting pole
