Alt-text: among the night’s many adventures, Falst “acquired” a new shirt the same color and cut as his old one. he has three new in-jokes with Kendal now.

Sorry I didn’t get to this till now, I was busy on a trip
“Most of the automatons are entirely ruined, of course,” Erin is saying as they walk down the docks. “The Shattered Wastes were the front lines in the Ancient civil war. But the ones you find on Helm are much larger than any found on this side of the ocean. Titanic weapons of war, capable of carrying— or razing— whole cities.”
“We’ll need gear for mobility, then,” Dainix says, accepting the cup of tea Alinua hands him. “The first step in taking down something that big is usually to either get on it or inside it.”
“On the off chance that we DO find a War Titan still miraculously functional enough to do us harm, under NO circumstances should we go inside it!” Erinyelps.
“No, really, it’s the accepted strategy,” Dainix says. They have a much harder time hitting you if–”
“ERIN!” Dainix is interrupted by Tarren’s shouting. “About time you showed up, sleepyhead! Leaving your friends to do all the heavy lifting?”
Kendal, holding two boxes as he starts to make his way up the gangplank, pauses, glances at the boxes, and then says, “They’re speaking euphemistically. It isn’t that heavy.”
“And you didn’t tell me your sister was in town!” Tarren continues.
“For the record, I didn’t MAKE them help me carry stuff,” calls Tess. “I think they’re just like that.”
“I’ll handle this,” Falst mutters, leaning on one of the boxes.
“Kendal!” Alinua yelps. “Why–”
“Oh good morning,” says Falst, popping up in front of Alinua. Dainix and Erin give him startled looks. “Looks like you guys had a nice time running around the city instead of getting any sleep. Be pretty hypocritical of you to criticize anyone else for working a little too hard.”
Alinua stares straight ahead with a strained look on her face, while Falst smiles smugly.
“If your arm is even slightly strained–” she starts, narrowing her eyes at Falst.
“I was tactical. Lefty only,” interrupts Falst, raising his left arm.
This one’s long, especially compared to the last one XD
Those faces in the last two panels- Chef’s kiss. *Perfect*
I love Dainix’s subtle avocation of getting attack on titan style giantkiller mobility aids. Definitely not foreshadowing any future complications across the sea
Hey, if the boarding ramp isn’t breaking or at least creaking under this weight (which, as Kendal walks, is entirely distributed on just one of his feet), then it must indeed not be all that heavy.
In fact, superhuman strength is all well and good but it doesn’t trump basic physics. Since Kendal isn’t leaning back while carrying two boxes in front of him, that means the center of mass of the Kendal+boxes system must remain aligned with Kendal’s legs, meaning it’s within Kendal’s body. If the center of mass was in the boxes, then Kendal would have to lean back (or carry the boxes above his head or something) in order not to fall. Granted, it could also be a dynamic system where he’s falling forward but the act of walking keeps him standing… except that he paused and stopped for a moment to say that the boxes weren’t that heavy. Which means that indeed, the boxes are not heavy enough to make him lose his balance while carrying them like this.
So the boxes must be pretty light all things considered, certainly much lighter than Kendal’s own body.
I can’t for the life of me remember where but I’m pretty sure it’s been directly established man’s body is very dense.
Actually, now I think of it, we’ve never seen him swim, have we? With how dense his body is I’m not sure how buoyant he’s gonna be when something bad inevitable happens on this ship.
Erin and Dainix, with Alinua, head
To the ship discussing War Titans.
There, wounded Kendal and Falst haul crates,
Which Alinua angers and frightens.
Falst points out she was working all night,
Making such anger hypocrisy.
With the usual snark they climb the gangplank,
Onto their ship for crossing the sea.
devastated we missed Roof Time but I guess these are the sacrifices that must be made in order to get the gang all in one place so they could leave on time
Panel 1 of 1-5-2, panel 4 of 1-18-17, now panel 9 here; I’m not sure how to describe that face Alinua makes, but I love it.
Blowing on a drink to cool it down for an Ignan probably isn’t necessary, but it’s the thought that counts. We may need plenty of hot drinks for this voyage; Tarren’s talked a lot about making the ship fast, sturdy, and now stabilised for comfort, but I’m not sure how much thought they’ve put into keeping the occupants warm.
Shadow of the Colossus is required playing among the Ravvan I see. Carrying cities you say? Calling it now: the gang is going to encounter Shrike and/or the Paladins in what they think is an ancient ruin, but turns out to be the top of a now re-activated titanic automaton. Teeth clenched teamwork and Zombie Dungeon Bonding Arc Part II abound.
I love these character interactions: Erin explaining Helm automatons to Dainix and Dainix delivering practical replies, rather different from what other members of the gang may respond with; Tarren getting along well with Erin’s friends who automatically start helping with the cargo (I can relate to that); and Falst knowing exactly what Alinua was about to say, and how to perfectly counter it. Part of me doesn’t want a missive from Zuurith reaching them just yet, so they can continue for a few pages more.
It was very hard to pick a favorite aspect of this page, until Falst slid up to Alinua and cut the ground out from under her. His casual “It’d be a shame if…” style remark was just…*chef’s kiss*
This page made me grin so hard. Tactical and technically-has-a-point Falst. There’s the smirk! Kendal “it’s not that heavy.” Tess just letting ‘em be chaos gremlins. reactions. Dainix and Erin look like they weathered sleep deprivation relatively well. Maybe they’re used to it from warrior duties and university, respectively?
Man, a giant robot able to carry a whole city on its back while simultaneously destroying others? And the recommended strategy is that you get on top of it to destroy it from the inside? Hmmm, where have I seen that before, certainly not in a game where mayhaps mankind is dead, blood is fuel and hell is full? (Seriously though this is either a crazy coincidence or red has seen ultrakill before)
(addendum to my prev comment: not that Alinua isn’t handling sleep deprivation fine. She just looked slightly more tired to me in that second panel and appears to have prepped my favorite coping mechanism: tea.)
Haha, Tarren has met Erin’s new friends! This delights me.
Kendal’s little eye shift, Erin giving an all night lecture, Falst’s smug little grin, Tarren’s boundless enthusiasm…it’s so nice to see everybody again!
I love whatever dynamic falst and alinua have, they spend every conversation debating and finding loopholes and then the second erin is on screen they agree nonstop. they hate each other, its great!
Not pictured: Falst carrying stacks of boxes left-handed like a waiter. Tess is (a little) surprised that the lil man is that strong. Kendal is not shocked at all because he can do that and doesn’t understand humans much yet. Tarren starts thinking of ways to use this for SCIENCE.
For some reason replies don’t work on the homepage(when you click on the Aurora logo so on the tab browser thingie it says Aurora – Homepage(I think that’s what it says?)), but they do on the specific comic pages(when the tab browser thingie says the page number and then Aurora)
For all that Ali’s concerns are warranted, I cannot help but crack up at her and Falst in those last two panels.
And as a person with long hair, I am slightly envious that Kendal can work without at least tying it back. Mine would be blowing everywhere in the wind or otherwise getting in the way. And it snarls like nobody’s business.
I love it when characters are friends!
Alinua, Dainix, and Erin having apparently spent the night not just shopping but comparing notes, with Erin and Dainix talking about automatons. Kendal and Falst’s not shown roof conversation and that they now have 3 new inside jokes (alt text) and I’m guessing they also went shopping (Falst “acquired” a new shirt- hey can Falst sew?) and are now helping pack the ship. Tess who has I guess been supervising the two and helping and hanging out with Terran. Terran’s comments to Erin. The jokes. The little things- Alinua blowing on the drink before handing it to Dainix, Falst saying he’ll handle it in the 7th panel. I love characters who are friends!
Huh for some reason I read “acquired new shirt” as meaning he stole it but maybe he did make it some way. I like characters who are friends too and Terran’s comments to Erin are making me wonder if if them and Tess have met before now or if this is their first meeting.
the “acquired a new shirt” does lead me to think he might have stolen it as well, especially with that verbiage. I want to know the story. Did Falst steal it when Kendal wasn’t looking? Did he get one for Kendal? Were the two in a busy shopping center and then Falst ducks off to the side, comes back with a new shirt? Falst does joke about “being real experienced at getting stuff legally” in ch 14 (did I go reread the market scene for this comment maybe). Is that one of the 3 new inside jokes?
Huh that’s an interesting point I wonder if Tess and Terran have met before? If not, then I guess Erin talked about her while he was at the academy?
Oh you’ve read Mortal Instruments too? cool!
(I think i’m thinking of the right book? the cities on wheels? and the Medusa weapon? Yeah I’m thinking of the right book)
I suspect they might just be describing a typical skyscraper-scale mecha from the perspective of someone for whom a ship is a large vehicle and multiple lacrimas in one vehicle is cutting edge. Compared to the Ancients, even Erin can be somewhat fairly considered a primitive barbarian.
I can’t help but be curious about this ancient civil war, is this the first we’re hearing about it or was it mentioned earlier and how ancient was it, I’m pretty sure this is the first I’ve heard of giant automatons being involved and why was it considered a “civil” war that suggests it was a war between two or more factions of a pre-existing group and why was it fought on Helm as the frontlines.
did I just forget a big chunk Aurora’s history or is this new information?
It’s fun that I can think of so many questions from a short piece of dialogue.
I’ve been wondering about the ‘Silent Lands’ that Erin mentioned when talking to Tarren way back. The Second City, the civil war, the Shattered Wastes…I’m assuming that what happened with the Ancients is going to be important in explaining why the world of Aurora is the way it is, and I’m really looking forward to hearing more about it in time!
I really appreciate that implication that Erin is willing to die to protect an archeological site, even if said site is attempting to erase him from existence.
Is Terran going with them? It’d be cool if he did. Also, if he doesn’t go with them how will he get his boat back? ‘Cause i don’t see Erin returning this way unless… would Kendall need to go back to the site of Vash’s city? I just feel like they’re going to get distracted or the plot will carry them forward and Terran is either going with them or being left behind permanently, maybe to be met on the way back like Elrond in the Hobbit. (in my head at least, it’d be irresponsible to go all the way to Lonely Mountain and back, and not stop to see Elrond on the return. If only so you can show him new maps or information or just hang out for a bit before going on to the Shire.)
From previous conversation I think they’re intending to take Elrond’s role. Supply the party, stay behind, and hope the party come back past at some point. They’re explicitly not expecting to get the boat back: I think they just want detailed notes of how it failed, and recognise that putting the plot on board will maximise the stress to the ship while Erin will provide sufficient notes.
Falst and Kendal are the rare “straight man & straight man” comedy duo that’s super hilarious
(note: “straight man” refers to the traditional straight man/funny man comedy duo setup, not heterosexuality. Let’s be real there’s no way either of these guys is het XD)
True. Absolutely no way. Although since Red herself has stated that she assumes characters to be aro/ace until proven otherwise, it’s also safe to assume that most/all of the floof squad is until further notice.
Something that has been mentioned but I haven’t seen anyone point out the implication. Dainix knows “the accepted strategy” for fighting creatures that are big enough to fight from the inside. My understanding of the Ravvan is that they are effectively an elite town guard. Mostly they fight things that get too close to town, or are getting too close to a town before there is an actual emergency. And they fight things big enough to fight from the inside regularly enough that they, at the very least, seem to make sure their members know the general outline of how to do it.
I love this. This is far from the only setting where such a threat might attack, but most of those you kind of assume some adventurers are going to save the day, not that the town guard will just consider this a hard work day.
The whole “frontline of the Ancient Civil War” thing reminds me of the Final War in Ultrakill, especially with the whole automatons thing. With that said, I wanna see that happening! Earthmover fight when.
Didn’t pick this up the first time (it was a 3:00am read, sue me), but Falst was the one shutting down drama and arguments before they happened. I was not expecting him to fill the niece of diplomat.
Good to see the fuzziest floof in better headspace.

The strats are made, while the boxes are moved
And Falst’s arm usage is Tactics-approved
Ah yes, the return of Tactical Reasons TM
I love Dainix’s subtle avocation of getting attack on titan style giantkiller mobility aids. Definitely not foreshadowing any future complications across the sea
I love Kendal not realising that those boxes are probably stupidly heavy for anyone else and thinks “Oh, this is the metaphors everyone uses.”
Hey, if the boarding ramp isn’t breaking or at least creaking under this weight (which, as Kendal walks, is entirely distributed on just one of his feet), then it must indeed not be all that heavy.
Or the ramp is made out of a really strong wood.
So the boxes must be pretty light all things considered, certainly much lighter than Kendal’s own body.
He’s made with metal in his bones, he is pretty heavy
Counterpoint: Kendal’s body is also probably unusually heavy. Dude’s got metal bones.
Now I’m wondering if he’d sink in water…
I can’t for the life of me remember where but I’m pretty sure it’s been directly established man’s body is very dense.
Actually, now I think of it, we’ve never seen him swim, have we? With how dense his body is I’m not sure how buoyant he’s gonna be when something bad inevitable happens on this ship.
How heavy is magic meteor metal with blue fire powers?
How heavy is magic space metal with blue fire powers?
The boat ramp is obviously made out of Catoonium, simultaneously the strongest and weakest material known to exist. So, yes. And, no.
…and I replied to the wrong comment. Le sigh.
‘Person learning about metaphors’ is probably one of my favourite tropes in alien media
What even is in the boxes?
Oooooooh these characters! Oooh, all of them!!! Haha, just look at that, it’s all amaaaaziiiing and I love it so much <3

Catty, even.
wait, isn’t a euphemism meant to reduce the verbal impact of a concept? wouldn’t this be an exaggeration?
FALST I MISSED YOU
Mmmm the page number being 2.2.2 makes number brain happy
hehe… get her Falst!
Words cannot describe how much I love Alinua and Faust’s faces in the second to last panel
I have been laughing at that panel for 10 minutes. It’s just too much.
Panel 1 of 1-5-2, panel 4 of 1-18-17, now panel 9 here; I’m not sure how to describe that face Alinua makes, but I love it.

Shadow of the Colossus was what I was thinking too. I was expecting the mouse over to be a reference somehow, but I was wrong.
I wonder if they’ll be climbing inside a miraculously still functioning aggressive War Titan in the NEXT chapter or the chapter after that…
It was very hard to pick a favorite aspect of this page, until Falst slid up to Alinua and cut the ground out from under her. His casual “It’d be a shame if…” style remark was just…*chef’s kiss*
And the look on his face in panel 8? Perfection.
I’ve missed these guys so much!!!
Also giant automatons! I’m sure these won’t be relevant at all *cocks Chekhov’s Gun*
This page made me grin so hard. Tactical and technically-has-a-point Falst. There’s the smirk! Kendal “it’s not that heavy.” Tess just letting ‘em be chaos gremlins. reactions. funny coincidence this page came out just after I had garbo, too short sleep

M A C H I N E
TURN BACK, NOW
(addendum to my prev comment: not that Alinua isn’t handling sleep deprivation fine. She just looked slightly more tired to me in that second panel and appears to have prepped my favorite coping mechanism: tea.)
….So you’re telling me that the Aurora planet has Ferronises now?
“It isn’t that heavy” mfs when you gotta lift a small Volkswagen.
Man I love the feeling of being up before the sun is, getting ready for a roadtrip or whatnot. I’m picking up those kinda vibes from this page.
Haha, Tarren has met Erin’s new friends! This delights me.
Kendal’s little eye shift, Erin giving an all night lecture, Falst’s smug little grin, Tarren’s boundless enthusiasm…it’s so nice to see everybody again!

TL;DR: Sleep?? What’s that?
I wonder how much willpower it took Red to not make Falst do the :3 face at the end there xD
Great to be back, but having two sets of panels with the same “silence->witty remark” structure is a bit much (panels 5,6 and 9,10)
Unless its intentional
I can excuse it for Falst’s and Aliuna’s expressions. The smugness on his face…
trueee
“big robot that caries cities and blows shit up” is not an exeptionaly novel concept

I just love falst’s expression in the last panel<3
oh how ive missed these character dynamics
I love it when characters are friends!
Alinua, Dainix, and Erin having apparently spent the night not just shopping but comparing notes, with Erin and Dainix talking about automatons. Kendal and Falst’s not shown roof conversation and that they now have 3 new inside jokes (alt text) and I’m guessing they also went shopping (Falst “acquired” a new shirt- hey can Falst sew?) and are now helping pack the ship. Huh that’s an interesting point I wonder if Tess and Terran have met before? If not, then I guess Erin talked about her while he was at the academy?
“Titanic weapons of war, capable of carrying – or razing – whole cities.”
What is this? Mortal Instruments?
Oh you’ve read Mortal Instruments too? cool!
(I think i’m thinking of the right book? the cities on wheels? and the Medusa weapon? Yeah I’m thinking of the right book)
Oh wait it’s Mortal Engines 🤦♀️
In my defense then names are very similar!
Red putting her newly-acquired understanding of the Noodle Incident to good use in the alt-text, huh? lol
THE EXPRESSIONS ON TODAYS PAGE ARE SO GOOD TF
I can’t help but be curious about this ancient civil war, is this the first we’re hearing about it or was it mentioned earlier and how ancient was it, I’m pretty sure this is the first I’ve heard of giant automatons being involved and why was it considered a “civil” war that suggests it was a war between two or more factions of a pre-existing group and why was it fought on Helm as the frontlines.

Hey wait— isn’t that the Falst face Red posted on Tumblr?
*checks*
It is!
Gotta love Alina’s expressions (hey look new user!)
LOVING the expressions lately
Falst gained +10 to Smug in that second to last panel xD
The floof squad is back! I love their banter so much!
So… war titans? Sure that won’t be a problem and Dainix won’t try to get inside one despite Erin’s warning!
Erin needs to watch more mech inspired kids shows he’s sorely behind accepted mech tactics
Falst is so real for this tho… I can relate lol.
I just noticed the “party trick”. That hand was drawn exactly as intended. Also, please don’t.
Dainix would have been one of the people going “why didn’t antman just explode thanos from the inside out” back in whenever that movie came out
