When I read “The journey will continue when we ring in the new year!” I thought “Okay, some time in January.” Not three hours into 2024! Glad I was on autopilot while checking all my webcomics for updates.
When The Junior Archivist was sent off with the books in 1.16.18, I hoped that she would end up bumping into the Floof Crew and become a new member, at least temporarily, but her (totally understandable) misunderstanding of Erin’s situation in 1.18.26 really threw in a wrench into the gears.
On the one hand, her connection to The Light Dragon/The Lady makes her a prime candidate for Protagonization, but on the other hand you can’t set something like that up and not have at least a little drama.
Excited to see where this goes. Happy New Year all!
It hasn’t been 4 hours and I’m already sensing something brewing. Can’t tell if what’s brewing is good or bad, but I can feel the brew… brewing.

I just took a look at the cover art for this chapter and i’m pretty sure the two blurry figures in the front are Shrike and Trusk? Shrikes hair definitely matches and the height difference is really similar too. Are they gonna help Theia hunt Erin down?? Shrike certainly seemed done with Zuurith the last time we saw her and we know Trusk doesn’t particularly care for the city either.
Also who is that person behind Theia?? The wild hair, the cape and those sleeves reminded me of Falst’s dad, but i’ve been comparing screenshots and the mystery person’s hair is much shorter and looks to be grey-streaked, and they are, most notably, lacking in claws. Maybe Falst’s dad is a shifter ferin? But Falst probably would’ve inherited that.
I thought it could maybe be lady Huracan cause of the whole light dragon theme, but she doesn’t age, so the grey hair makes that unlikely.
Arc number two has barely started and I’m already going mad but I’m beyond excited for what’s going to happen! Also, HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE 🥳🥳
The best I can come up with is someone with power/influence who likes (or is required) to show it off and is probably associated with the paladins. Fur capes like that are expensive (at least I assume that’s true in story), and the only other place we’ve seen that fitted forearm style is on the other paladins. Either that or they just have general ties to a military organization, and Red’s way of implying that is through their wearing bracers.
I think that the shorter person’s hair is too white to be Shrike; Shrike’s hair is blond, not white. I think it might be, like, the other paladins tho, but I’m not sure.
I think it’s blond, although it is kinda hard to tell with all the glowiness.
Also, we now have a sigil, or rune, for Light… or the Lady.
And the fact that Maybe-Shrike-and-Trusk could be seen as blocking Theia’s way. Perhaps the *Order* will hire them to bring back an “apostate” archivist? And find out, in a self-contained interlude arc, that Theia is operating on direct orders from the Lady? Possibly in spectacular fashion.
here I was, rushing to finish my re-read before 3am (the time it says updates are for me) only to find that it’s 3am in a different timezone and I’m still hours late!
sidenote: somehow chapter 21 took me an hour to finish but chapter 22 took less than 30 minutes.

Fun fact: In our world, “Theia” is the name of the Titaness of light, and the mother of Helios, Selene and Eos (The Sun, Moon and Dawn). It is also the name given to the hypothetical impactor that created the moon. This is going to be fun!

I thought the Primordial of light was Aether. I’m also learning Greek on Duolingo and that says Theia means Aunt. Idk tho
Theia is also referred to as Aethra, yes, but is distinct from Aether – the Primordials are the generation before the Titans, the Titans to the Titans if you will. “Theia” itself just means “goddess”, and is more a title, like “Dione”. (Also also, Theia, as a Titaness, is an aunt of the Olympians, and probably the favorite too.)

I’m guessing she’s off to find Erin, it’s strange how she isn’t telling the rest of the Paladins about him. Unless it’s not Theia in control… White Dragon possession perhaps.

This is really unlikely but I am kind of hoping she joins the floof squad. Probably not going to happen though because of Erin being the host of the void dragon. Also, Happy New Year, everyone!
Not convinced it’s unlikely, seeing as Red has a habit of cutting through the BS of unnecessary dramatic irony, like, say, a powerful potential ally, or even savior, becoming an antagonist due to a misunderstanding that could be cleared up with a simple parley. Instead, Red tends to give us what we’re hoping for, and to make that work by putting in the work to make it awesome.
Another possibility is an extended, parallel, pursuit arc, as Theia tracks our heroes down, while simultaneously showing us more of who she is, and giving us our first real look at the Lady.
Ayyy!!! We’re back!!! And so is June with a glow up and an actual name!! She’s probably trying to go after Erin, so that’s going to be exciting (I wonder if he’ll even remember her, given the change in style/outift, and the fact the he didn’t really get to know her on much more than a business front
The junior archivist has a name! She’s going solo with a new haircut! We’re back in Zuurith! … Hmm, two out of three isn’t bad.
I’ve said it before but I really love the vein-like cracked marble effect of the Paladin HQ; makes it very distinct from the rest of Zuurith and everywhere else we’ve seen in the comic. Also art wise, is that a branch from Alinua’s prison tree in the final panel? Neat.
Theia going off on her own without contacting her superiors? Strange, from what we’ve seen of her and how diligent she was keeping to the rules when Erin tried to use the archives, she doesn’t strike me as the impulsive loner type. However, last time we saw her she was conversing with L.D. about Erin; could this be a covert mission given to her by her god? Her one pale eye in the covers for the interlude seems to imply that.
Speaking off the cover, yes, I agree that’s Shrike and Trusk in the foreground. Hired by Theia? How is she paying them I wonder. No idea about the person behind Theia; doesn’t quite match anyone I recognise in the comic. But behind them, I think those two sets of eyes belong to L.D., or a dragon possessed by L.D. ala 1-6-27.
As to the specifics of her mission if it was given to her by L.D., I think it’s less overt and confrontational, more covert and tracking focused. Theia is a junior in the Paladins so I don’t think her combat ability is anything to write home about, and the gang have beaten Shrike before when she had her boys (gender neutral) and the home field advantage. But if they can track the gang down, something Trusk has already been shown to do and Shrike likely knows a thing or two as well, and keep tabs on where they are and where they’re going, relay that info to L.D., then she can tell the Paladin Champion so he can deal with Erin. Also explains why she’s ditched the Paladin garb; less likely to be noticed by the gang.
This does mean however that there could be a long period of time between Theia meeting the gang again and the Paladin Champion showing up. Time for her to learn the details of Erin’s logical plan, time to learn of the three powers highly resistant to the Dark Dragon, and time to for her to maybe think that their way is worth giving a shot and cause some friction between Theia and her order.
I concur with this. The only thing I can add is that Theia may, for one reason or another, not need to pay Shrike and Trusk. The Lady may have other means, but also, Shrike and Trusk may have their own reasons to go after the Floof Squad.
I hope we also get a little more about post-storm Zuurith before we rejoin our heroes. How much reform will actually happen? It’s starting well, but…
Here’s another possibility to chew on: maybe Theia feels guilty about what she sees as a betrayal of her order (giving Erin access to their sacred records) and she is leaving the order until she can find a way to atone for her “sins.”

For some reason the back of my mind remembers ‘Hell as no fury like a woman scorned’ keeps bouncing around when I think of Theia/(J.A.) and how betrayed she felt when she learned the ‘Ambassador’ withheld the Void Dragon’s presence within him from her.

I have just fixed my sleep schedule from nocturnal to human, when I realised that Aurora is back . . . now sleep is a foreign concept until Red updates! I can’t WAIT to see where this intriguing first page leads our newest focus character . . .

I really hope Theia (or the other paladins looking for the Void Dragon) hire Shrike. She’s a hunter, a tracker, and a really cool character that could be easily included in the plot!
