WAIT.
Falst was confused when Kendal said Falst did something with the lacrima… okay okay okay, I think I see what’s been going on in here.
I think our good doctor may have been experimenting with the lacrima, trying to figure out how to (maybe) help Falst. Falst then stole that lacrima for whatever reason, and we’ve arrived at our chimera problem. Thoughts?
LOL
It might not actually be destroyed, though, maybe it needs to be broken open in order to do something? Depending on that something, it might still be deadly hmmm
The doctor definitely can’t be helping Falst in my estimation because he fingered Falst as the cause of the Chimera problem to our heroes, however Falst does not even seem to have done anything with the lacrima yet. Either the doctor just irrationally thinks Falst did it, in which case the Doctor is not positively disposed to Falst and would not have been helping him. Or the doctor is intentionally lying and so is really not Falst’s friend and is probably either the one who is (intentionally) making chimera or works for whoever is making them.
Does Falst want to be ‘a real boy’? Is that what he needs the lacrima for? To become human?
Also, is this going to be a Falst and Kendal vs Erin and Alinua fight?
That’s what I’ve been thinking. The page Falst was looking at in the book had a picture of a person with an animal paw, so it makes sense that it would be about changing one’s appearance.
And yes, I believe it will be:) Do I wish they would talk it out? Yes. Do I really want to see an epic fight scene? Also yes. Though judging by the next chapter’s title page, it will not go well.
Ok I’m calm now
“They are so caught up in their assumptions…” but Kendal, you too are assuming that Falst has done/plans on doing something “bad” with that lacrima!
Can you let the man speak for himself? What does he mean with “With the crystal, I won’t NEED to fight”???
It comes with more benefits than just not being hunted like an animal. Without claws, he can use a pen, open a soda can, shake hands safely (haha remember when we could shake hands) and turn dials!
Seems Kendal was right on target when he said the others were looking for a fight. Erin going all “fire first, ask questions later” does not… bode well.
The last panel kinda makes it look like Erin is making stone from thin air, though since that’s impossible, he probably pulled a boulder from the ground in between panels.
Also, literally every time Erin has cast magic, he’s touched his tattoos to do so. Those tattoos better improve the flow of elemental energy through his soul, making it much easier to cast magic. Given his strong reaction to Alinua’s inquiry at the beginning of chapter 8 (“You didn’t lie about your connections, did you?”) and his comments about the soulshaper monks soon after (“They’re reliable and discreet”,”My family’s had dealings with them before”,”They mostly specialize in opening [magical] links”), I don’t think Erin was born an elemental magus, and that Erin’s family paid for him to become one (if the monks accept payment, of course).
Or it could be that he was born with malformed links that needed to be opened by the monks. It seems to me like any problem Erin may have had with harnessing his magic that the Academy couldn’t fix was dealt with by the soulshapers.
In light of the new chapter reveal and these gorgeous last few pages, I just have to stop and appreciate just how well done these chapter titles are; specifically the last two. When you see the title page for this chapter, “Beast,” you notice Falst first, as he is clearly part lion. Before these couple of pages, you just think, “Cool, a whole chapter about this neat animal hybrid person. Sweet.” But in the context of this conversation Kendal and Falst just had, you look again and notice Kendal is in the same spot as Falst. While one wants nothing more than to be seen as human, the other wishes he wasn’t seen that way. They are both beasts in their own respect, one way or the other. In a similar vein, seeing the lacrima broken with the title “Mosnter” would make you think, “Ooo big chimeric monster fight! Awesome.” But in context of the epic line, “[Monsters] create themselves one atrocity at the time,” I’m beginning to think that the monster that shows up won’t be some chimeric mutation. (I mean, maybe. I’m always down for an epic fight scene.) I think that perhaps the “monster” that is created is going to be more along the lines of a character snapping in response to it being broken. Maybe either Falst gets his seemingly one shot of “normalcy” taken away because of our main group’s action in prejudice, or the refusal to let go of prejudice could make one of the main group into a “monster” of sorts. Either way, the tension building from the last chapter or so is about to snap, and I am PUMPED to see how. Dang this thing is well-written.
While I too am somwhat excited for an epic fight scene, particularly one caused by misunderstanding, resulting in drastic repercussions, all the while frantically trying to understand, at this moment in time I am disappointed in Erin for attacking Falst instead of fixing the lacrima. He should be able to recognize that a) they are not fighting b) Kendal can handle himself in a fight, especially if the main goal is to keep the attack away from Erin while he works some science-magic c) the lacrima is more immediately dangerous (supposedly) than Falst. I guess wisdom doesn’t always come with intelligence.
Nah, Erin is definitely smart–he’s not just studious, he’s intelligent. But smart people can still make stupid decisions (that doesn’t mean they ALL do, but they CAN). Especially when they’re distracted by hubris (*couhg* Erin).
Just a thought as I check on this, completely forgetting the update is actually next morning and I suck at understanding time zones-
Erin always touches the tattoos on his arms before casting, which neither Alinua, the Collector, nor punchy lightning lady Tess do. Is that a nervous habit from when he was learning, like how I’ll play a perfectly fine instrument like I do with the slightly broken one I learned it on, is it a slight disability, is it just to keep track of all the elements he controls, or is he just pushing up his sleeves so they don’t get burned off? Because I checked, when it’s Dark Floof V.D. controlling him, he never touches them.
Good words Kendal and great effort to utilise the power of friendship. Pity Erin had to be impulsive.
Yeah I think AuriaNox is onto it, the next chapter cover implies a chimeric monster but I suspect the “Monster” in question will be the person truly behind the chimeras (as Falst’s reaction here implies it’s not him).
I love my angsty boy!!
ROUND 2! FIGHT!
Also, can I just say it’s dope as hell to see Erin wield multiple elements simultaneously?
anything erin does is dope
he’s so cool
fight me
Thought this was hellohaiku for a second
I’m gonna bet every cent I’ve ever had that Falst is gonna be the new party member.
PARTY ROGUE PARTY ROGUE PARTY ROGUE
Funny thing is; any other party he whould be the figther, but this party has Kendal whom is figtheryer.
that final panel….that final godamn panel. its just chef kiss!
i think this is going to be the first time we’ve seen Erin properly fight
correct me if im wrong btw
Yes, it is (probably, if this isn’t another fakeout)
And did you notice that the lighting on Erin is reminiscent of the lighting in the chapter cover? And his eyes are reflecting red? Exciting!
Whoooo boy Erin getting fancy and making assumptions
Best comment
Falt’s about to get a protective huuuuuuuuuuug <3
TIME TO BURN DOWN THIS FOREST MOTHERFUCK&RS!
Wait… that’s fire AND stone magic!? Erin is literally trowing a sphere of lava at Falst!!!
im actually shaking with anticipation for how cool the fight scene might be
and why must the next be in two days?! such cruel and unnatural torture…
I know!
Also if it wasn’t for the fire magic, I would have guessed it was Sword’s light illuminating half of Erin’s body
ERIN, NO, YOU’LL INCUR GLEICANN’S WRATH!
Errin is down the combo thing, nice
Also Kendal has a great line “Monsters are created, one artrocity at a time.” Wow
“They create themselves, one atrocity at a time.” That quote is SO GOOD

Unless the real enemy was chimera mom all along…
ps: did you notice the new cover art of chapter 10? ?
I did. That… is very, VERY BAD.
“Deadly, actually!”
LOL
It might not actually be destroyed, though, maybe it needs to be broken open in order to do something? Depending on that something, it might still be deadly hmmm
it appears that the lacrima split in half and spilled out all that weird green magic stuff. maybe it turns the people of hilltop into chimeras?

… oooooooooooh, I think I get it.
what do you get? I’m curious

I’m guessing that Kendell is going to go into protective Floof mode
Oh man.. Erin has just found falst.. and falst stole Erin’s bookbag… s**t is abiut to go DOWN
“MOVE!”
“hah. lol nope.”
“I told you to run? That was smart of me. Why didn’t you run?”
Has anyone seen the new chapter panel? It’s sending messages of extreme mutations to one of the characters
To me at least
$5 bucks say Kendal does move; but in order to stop the magic attack with his face to save feral guy.
ERIN NO

Kendal is about to defend that kid to everyone’s confusion.
While I too am somwhat excited for an epic fight scene, particularly one caused by misunderstanding, resulting in drastic repercussions, all the while frantically trying to understand, at this moment in time I am disappointed in Erin for attacking Falst instead of fixing the lacrima. rather that knowledge and power don’t come with intelligence, haha

Good old Erin “Hubris Is A Coward’s Word” Ruunaser.

TL;DR:
Corpse floof: tries to deescalate, is kinda sorta successful.
Nerd floof: no.
