That thing is still alive after having been stabbed in the brain? o_O That must hurt…
Rip Erin’s fancy shield also, 1.8.14-1.8.14, destroyed by uncontrolled Life magic; I wonder what’s written in that spell…
Last but not least, new theory:
Falst had always with him a green crystal in some older sketches, probably a Life-charged lacrima;
If we assume that this monster is a chimera, but that it wasn’t the Collector that made it, could it be Falst fault maybe?
Since Ferins aren’t mages, maybe he didn’t known the implications of casting too much magic on some living being; then when it was already too late he pulled a Frankenstein and let the mutated creature wander in the forest. 😛
I read that as Erin putting his guard up assuming that Alinua was going to explode/miss/do something random, then dismissed the shield when he saw that she Knows Exactly What She’s Doing. There seems to be a B-Plot in this chapter about Erin learning that non-academic approaches to magic are much more reliable than he was taught and/or he just sucks at them. I look forward to a callback in Act 3 where Erin has an emotional moment and gets a Power of Friendship boost for the first time in his life. It will be very satisfying.
No offense intended, but I think Alinua’s quote after her special overload (Chapter 3 maybe?), “It’s not fighting me anymore”, makes it pretty clear that she actually can handle them now.
I guess that we’ll see in the next pages, but since Red said “it has been [0] days without a magical *meltdown*” and “…nothing is more dramatic than a emotion-fueled magic *explosion*”, I think she’s implying these episodes can still happen.
Her soul itself won’t probably explode again, but IMHO we’ll see a lot of those green brambles after Alinua’s done.
Plus, as you said in another comment, Erin’s words are reminiscent of what she said in chapter 3 before losing control (also she just shattered his shied, I guess it should have been pretty resistant).
I think Alinua will suffer another hangover and turn more into life. This will keep happening until she turns into how VD sees her. But that’s just a theory…
I love how Erin’s protest sort of mirrors Alinua’s assurance before her first on-screen breakdown where she’s right in the middle of saying that she has this under- control– *explodes*
You can tell by Falst’s expression in the third panel that he genuinely admires Kendal for what he is doing, but shakes it off for the sake of getting those books from Erin’s pack. I don’t think he sent that monster to them, given how happy/shocked he looks when it looks like Kendal is winning against it.
In Felines, their pupils expand a whole lot when they are excited or interested in something, and given Red’s twitter posts, and how they made Walter/VD’s eyes dilate when he was especially curious about something, i think it’s safe to say that Red has packed some hints for us in subtle expressions like these.
Of course though i could be wrong, but when i saw that panel my mind immediately went to my cat, who is an absolute doofus, and whenever she’s playing, her eyes go so wide they look almost completely black.
So the hooded lion-guy wants Erin’s books, interesting. From his expressions in the previous pages and this one it seems he has nothing to do with the chimera, he isn’t using it as a distraction. Also he respects, or at least fears, the gang, especially Kendal from his performance so I think he’s sussed that a frontal mugging won’t work and if he wants the books he needs to grab and go now.
Poor Erin, can’t use his fire attack, can’t use his wind shield and keeps getting his knowledge of magic and physics upended by these two.
WHOA! erin made a shield?! does anyone know which rune/tattoo made the shield cos i rlly wanna know
He’s using the Wind Rune tattoo. Seems he’s making a shield out of the air

I think the hover text makes it very clear that Alinua still can’t handle properly her powers…

Also I hope my reply didn’t come out as rude ? it was not my intention
I think your reply came out politer than mine 🙂
Perhaps we can conclude that Alinua can still explode, but not so dangerously…?
I think he disabled his shield voluntarily
While uncontrolled explosions are, truly, the spice of life*, this does not require that all explosions be uncontrolled.
*Pun neither intended nor regretted
Wind shield… I see what you did there, Red.
Also, Life meltdown commencing in 3, 2, 1…
I think Alinua will suffer another hangover and turn more into life. This will keep happening until she turns into how VD sees her. But that’s just a theory…
Oh, very cool. Nice Shield, Erin – though your theory needs work, man. XD
Yep, here’s the offended life mage showing the beast how it’s done.
thanks candle!
i would reply if i could but for some reason i cant 😛
You need to be on the particular comic page to reply to a comment. Replying from the main page doesn’t work.
Thx for the tip!
Charisma caster, baby! EMOTION IS HER POWER!
Kendal’s expression in the second panel. 🙂
Why is the mysterious figure eyeing the books..? Are they going to steal them?
That’s my guess.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who was more focused on that than anything else going on here.
Behold, O Pompous Nitwit, a display of Alinua’s TRUE POWER!
“You should ask him what his deal is”, says Alinua, “because Vash knows there’s AbsoLUtely nOthINg
going on with me…”
I love how Erin’s protest sort of mirrors Alinua’s assurance before her first on-screen breakdown where she’s right in the middle of saying that she has this under- control– *explodes*
Must be annoying when you thought you knew everything there was to know about magic and these two hillbillies keep showing you off.
“Hillbillies” Remicas you are a genius, that’s perfect.
Falst about to be a sneaky boi and rob some books
She barely even explodes anymore these days!
FOOLISH MORTAL
hood boy just wants to learn
I have a feeling that the next panel will involve a flying bag of books

Every time I see Kendal in the second panel…

TL;DR: Floofy girl, disappointingly, doesn’t explode in a shower of life magic and blood. Also creepy dude is still spying on the floofcrew.
How is Erin making that shield? that’s so cool!
Alt text: c’mon, erin, live a little, nothing’s more dramatic than an emotion-fueled magic explosion
