So VD wanted to use the elemental magus to unfuse the adamant prison and free himself. And he couldn’t control them because they had sentience and possessing them would be a lot harder. But…how did he posses Erin? Was the pedestal la tool that VD used to possess people?
Hmmmm…theorising is fun
I mean, he’s presented as an antagonist for damn good reason, but if you feel bad for his millennia of imprisonment, I won’t stop you. Just… he seems to be following Red’s ‘pure evil’ trope talk to a T, so be prepared for an eventual third-act breakdown
I get that you’re sort of joking and this is a little out of left field, but this reminds me of the logic that people use to unironically justify monpolists getting to keep being billionaires.
“He’s abusing his workers and exploiting our economic system. This is a problem”
“Well yeah but he’s just so skilled at manipulating people. I think he’s earned it.”
Some time later:
Erin: So now I’m in deep trouble. I’m deep in the Singing Caves, cave crawlers coming at my body every now and then. I’m possessed and at his mercy. And what does the Void Dragon do?
Kendal: He starts monologuing?
Erin: He starts monologuing!
Me too, that division between the third and the fourth panel seems very suspicious…
Frozone: He starts like, this prepared speech about how *feeble* I am compared to him, how *inevitable* my defeat is, how *the world* *will soon* *be his*, etc…
On the one hand, all this lore dropping is probably causing me and all the other lore-lovers to lose fingers from all the note-taking.
On the other hand, keep him talking Erin. He’s inadvertently doing his reverse and sustaining me.
One thing that crossed my mind at second glance is Erin’s sick tats, which btw look absolutely gorgeous when activated.
V.D. here is using two elements simultaneously, whereas Erin seems to only ever use one at any given time. Erin is more than likely capable of using all six elements together, since he’s the Elemental Magus and whatnot. My question: is there a reason other than situational needs for Erin not to combine elements?
Maybe it’s just difficult. Erin, a mortal, could struggle to use multiple elements at once, but an immortal dragon-god who had a hand in the creation of magic? VD might find it easier.
Why use more power than you need? It’s probably not the easiest to do even one type of magic at a time, so why use more than one when one would do the job?
I don’t think there’s anything saying he can’t except basic logic. Even the simplest of elemental manipulation requires some energy and movement. Unless you actually need more than one element in a moment there’s no particular reason to use it. You could use fire and/or lightning to start light a campfire, but probably only fire is needed and not much. Similarly, water, wind and stone could put the campfire out but there’s no reason to throw wet lumps of earth at the fire using gale-force winds to put it out unless you’re an average person trying to put out a titan’s campfire.
That twitching in panel 3 is very suspicious, I think our boy Erin is doing alright.
I can also see him being very interested in VDs monologue. He must love al this knowledge coming from one of the most ancient and powerful beings in existence.
I don’t know whether to be thankful or disappointed that our Red’s void demon of choice isn’t as visually terrifying as it could be. The Void Dragon’s design is indeed aesthetically pleasing.
What I’m getting at is:
It’s not as horrifying as an Ungoliant expy would be. Whether maximum horror is desirable is up for debate.
Maybe she thinks his sheer size will help with the cosmic horror? I mean, how many times have you stared at the night sky, thinking about the vastness of space, and you get an existential crisis because of how damn tiny you are? It’s kinda fitting to make a personification of entropy and the vacuum of space as large as a moon
Ah, hello, favourite person in the comments section. I do indeed frequently contemplate my own existence and experience cosmic awe (though not horror); I was referring to my crippling arachnophobia and the fact that Red did NOT choose to make it worse the same way that the Silmarillion did.
I just read Lord of the Rings, but my parents didn’t allow me to the Silmarillion… though I’m horribly familiar to Ungoliant.
Also, (see what I mean, “favourite person in the comments section”, and I’m back and I knew it wouldn’t last long)
Ohh, while Alduin- I mean Void Dragon is monologuing and flexing his new fire and lightning powers Erin is gaining movement in one hand. Played correctly that could be all he needs.
TL;DR: The ancients liked to make stuff, but they still disappointed their grandpa (Walter). He knows this because the creep likes to spy on his grandkids. However, the Scary Magic Storm’s (RIP) parents made Scary Magic Storm, which Walter liked.
So, um, anyone else notice that the two beings in the backround of the first panel that are presumably Ancients look a whole lot like Kendal and Alinua?
OHHHH! So, the prologue. The dragon has the twins create the pointy-eared one and goes “No, another failure. It’s closed to the elements.” Then, the twins create a human, and at first the dragon is excited, but then sentience arises in the human (indicated by blue and the human speaking), and the dragon freaks out at not being able to control the human: “Listen to me! STOP!”
Hooray! Exposition dragon has come to exposit lore for for us! What would we do without you VD?

Is it wrong of me to be rooting for the Void Dragon in this? I mean he’s a real go getter!
Considering the fact that he wanted to kill literally everything… yes?
I mean, he’s presented as an antagonist for damn good reason, but if you feel bad for his millennia of imprisonment, I won’t stop you. Just… he seems to be following Red’s ‘pure evil’ trope talk to a T, so be prepared for an eventual third-act breakdown

That’s also a really good point, and why I don’t root for him
I see that finger twitch!

Man, I haven’t watched The Incredibles in so long… which sucks, because Didny snatched all the media they bought off of Netflix…
what’s in that jar?
I think that’s the storm pedestal thingy
On the one hand, all this lore dropping is probably causing me and all the other lore-lovers to lose fingers from all the note-taking.
On the other hand, keep him talking Erin. He’s inadvertently doing his reverse and sustaining me.
Plus, it’s always good when an arrogant villain monologues, it cements their arrogance.
Yes, Voidy. Gooood. Keep at it… now tell us how The Storm came to be…

Erin is more than likely capable of using all six elements together, since he’s the Elemental Magus and whatnot. My question: is there a reason other than situational needs for Erin not to combine elements?
Dangerous elemental output might cause irreversible damage to his body or something.
Maybe it’s just difficult. Erin, a mortal, could struggle to use multiple elements at once, but an immortal dragon-god who had a hand in the creation of magic? VD might find it easier.
Plus, the Void Dragon doesn’t care if Erin’s body and mind get elemental corruption, as long as it occurs after he’s free
Why use more power than you need? It’s probably not the easiest to do even one type of magic at a time, so why use more than one when one would do the job?

In chapter 9 (I think), he uses stone and fire magic at the same time to make lava

so basically, homeboys plan was jacked

Ah. I’ve never read the Silmarillion (I mean, can you blame me? That thing is a doorstop), so I didn’t get the reference.
(Also, thank you for the compliment! You’re very kind)
I just read Lord of the Rings, but my parents didn’t allow me to the Silmarillion… though I’m horribly familiar to Ungoliant.

OOOOOhhhhhh, Erin twitched his finger!, He must be distracting the dragon to weaken it’s hold untill he can restrain himself! BIG! BRAIN!
alt text: shot in the dark – was it murder?
So, um, anyone else notice that the two beings in the backround of the first panel that are presumably Ancients look a whole lot like Kendal and Alinua?
Ah, the Void Dragon is experimenting with Erin’s powers! Fire and lightning combined-he seems to like that.
Me finally understanding the first two pages
The Ancients were capable, though not where it mattered
But one mortal was enough among the many, scattered
Not great, but there aren’t many words that rhyme with “mattered”.

Murder is always the answer to these guys, infact, I’m surprised that Voidy’s plan wasn’t murder.
Hilarious ALT text though, is it a reference to Red’s video on Media? Either way, great joke
I wonder, on panel 2, who’s smiling?
