The final page of Arc 1. Wow this is beautiful. I’m not normally around to see more than the final season of a serially updating media get published, so this feels very bittersweet. Nonetheless… I cannot wait for Arc 2 in January. Please tell me they will be taking a nap.

Alternate universe where Kendal is Wolverine, with claws instead of the swod. All the other members of the floof squad get aged down to teenagers, so he can be their reluctant mentor.
Ok so Kendal as Wolverine, Tess could do a pretty good Storm. Dainix is kind of obvious as pyro, Falst would be a pretty good Beast, complete with the ‘I wish I were human’ angst Beast sometimes has. I’m kind of stuck on Alinua and Erin though, mostly cos I don’t actually know the men very well outside of the most well-known.
Damn it, I don’t know the X-MEN very well. I know quite a few men.
Personality-wise, these are all terrible fits, especially Kendall as Wolverine. But honestly, that just makes it funnier. I’m on board!
Oddly enough, even though I’m broadly familiar with a lot of X-men, I can’t think of any mutants that have had plant powers, specifically. I know there’s a character called Elixir, though, with healing powers – I guess he’ll do for the Alinua character? He also has a completely different personality from her, which fits with the other match-ups so far, haha.
As for Erin…hm…I guess David Haller, a.k.a. Legion would work? They’re equivalent in that Erin can use all kinds of elemental magic, and Legion has basically every imaginable kind of mutant power – though in Legion’s case, his immense power is balanced out by his split personality disorder (each personality has control of a different power), rather than his physical weakness.
I’ve been coming up with all the teenagers Wolverine has mentored over the years (Kitty Pryde, Jubilee, X-23, I think Armor?) and debating who fits with whom.
I can’t think of enough characters to start making matches though.
Oh, and Quinten Quire. I think he can be Erin.

They all take five steps, the exhaustion of the night kicks in, and set up camp again a stone’s throw away from the first one.
Threatening to tear of one of Tess’s hands, snapping Kendal’s Kendal in half, all with a mostly broken arm. Oh Falst, you gem. I’ve got two images in my head, one of Falst trying and failing to break starmetal, and another of him channeling his mysterious power, finally mastering it, for the sole purpose of breaking the sword, then never uses it again. I’m not sure which is funnier.
Taking the job that’s a bit to heavy for you in spite of/because your sibling is watching; as a guy with several bothers I can relate to Erin. Also nice to see Kendal feeling comfortable allowing others to take his weight while he’s still injured.
A beautiful ending panel of daybreak for an awesome first arc. To think it was four years ago when I started reading this comic, where does the time go? It’s been great seeing the characters, world, art and plot develop; you can definitely see the improvements. December is going to feel weird without Aurora updates, but that’ll just make the new year sweeter.

It is time to hibernate. I’m still hoping The Paladin shows up to hunt Erin. That way the Paladin can recruit June (the only member of their order who has seen the Void Dragon) and a skilled tracker/person hunter *cough* Shrike *cough* to go slay their mortal enemy. Maybe Trusk will come along to round out the quartet and keep an eye on Shrike.

Daybreak at last!
Things I love:
– Fierce protective Falst (toward Kendal)
– Erin’s face and “IT’S FINE”
– Falst and Dainix still supporting each other
– Floof Gang camaraderie, in general
– The hopeful, upbeat conclusion. Story’s not over, but they made it this far. They made it through the night.
Arc 1 has been a wild ride, and I’m so glad I hopped on board. Looking forward to Arc 2, but I hope both the gang and the artist get lots of sleep now. So much sleep. All the sleep.

Aurora Question #?: What are your overall feelings towards Arc 1?
im obsessed i loved it and i cant wait for what red wants to do next (escpecially with the amount of situationshipping shes doing right now…)

I don’t think I’ve been this dedicated to any form of media ever. It’s great. And not only that, it has come with a lovely community of creative, brilliant minds to share a story with (and in my case some of my own art) as well.
If every arc from now on takes 4,5 years to complete, and there will be seven arcs in total, this story will last for 27 more years. And somehow, that thought makes me very happy. This story and this community will hopefully remain a constant in my life for those three decades.
Arc 1 has everything I want out of a fantasy story (amazing plot, wonderful character dynamics, scary villains, interesting magic system, ancient mysteries etc., etc.). But it completely lacks the element I hate the most out of the fantasy genre, the forced romance. If this were any other story, Kendalinua would have been a forgone conclusion. Arc 1 would have ended with their first dramatic kiss, and arc 2 would have begun the endless drama between them. Instead, we got great platonic dynamics, something which might become romance later between Dainix and Falst as well as Ali and Tess, and a familial love between the whole gang that makes me smile massively. I absolutely adore it.
I also adore how seen this story makes me feel. In the earlier chapters of this arc, Kendal ponders how everyone sees him as something he isn’t, and how that isolates him. Now that I reread the story with a burgeoning understanding of my own masking tendencies, as well as queerness, that part hits home in an almost brutal way. I’ve commented previously how I’m often forced out of a character’s head once the romance begins, but that hasn’t happened yet. I’m still here, and I still fully understand the goings on of the characters. It’s something I don’t think I’ve ever had before.
So in conclusion, it’s great. Just great. I love it and I have every hope that Arc 2 will be just as great.

I love this story so much, and I’m so glad that the romance doesn’t feel forced in any direction and is just allowed to be or not be. Romance tends to take me out of most stories.
That said, I also love so many of the other things we get to see – Erin getting to be all ‘I have a dark, evil, side’ which just automatically adds him to my favorite characters list, Tess just getting be so unabashedly cool, Dainix getting to stay as a character and not getting dropped right after the prison break/tournament fight arc (I thought he was a temporary character for a bit and it made me sad), the friendship between Kendal and Alinua, and Kendal’s development through this arc!
I’m so excited for Arc 2!
I am also commenting to agree with both of you: although I don’t mind a romantic plot/subplot, I tend to get less emotionally attached to the characters (excluding the masterpiece that is Good Omens), and to be honest, would have liked this a lot less if everyone started falling in love rather than forming strong emotional bonds through supporting each other. They’re like a big family now, and I love them as they are! I’ll eagerly await arc 2 – cheers to Red and the floof squad!

What a delight this comic has been so far. Such a rich fantasy world, with complex, interesting, and appealing characters (Erin is far and away my favorite, but I enjoy them all). It has world-shaking themes, yet never takes itself too seriously and keeps a light tone throughout, whether it’s brother-sister snark, Kendal discovering he needs to sleep, Falst’s “tell me when I’m not dying…” or the Glort discovering Kendal can’t be hit with TV (trauma-vision).
The art is glorious. Lots of experiments with line communicating across panels, and overall attention to a harmonious, well-considered palette of jewel tones that are a feast for the eyes and suit the nature themes.
I’ve loved trying to figure out the traumatic backstories, and from a meta standpoint, watching Red’s artistic style develop. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I’ve looked forward to another posting. Last, but not least! The comment section’s been hilarious.

Yes, I’m looking forward to some continued travel, more of a look around this world… more slow-build character development… a little more of their light humor. It’s going to be a different dynamic now, so that’ll be interesting as they settle into a new camaraderie.
