Welp this is still bad, the bossfight is still going and Dainix is still caught up in it. I feel like something very bad or at least dramatic is going to happen on the next page
I don’t like how we can’t see Dainix’s face. Has the Glort done something to him? Is he going to be possessed or brainwashed or otherwise mind controlled? If it can absorb magic and bodies, can it absorb souls and minds too? Will we see a “I know you’re in there!” fight?
Yea, the fact his face isn’t towards us is kinda making me nervous too – do you think he’ll have white pearlescent eyes like the gloop did? Maybe he’s going to be trapped in his mind reliving his worst memories until someone snaps him out of it? Tho I think that with the amount of characters with a super powered entity possessing them, there’s got to be an “I know you’re in there” fight at some point. Cannot wait!
Well, of the three characters that can be possessed easily, Erin is the one most likely to have an “I know you’re in there fight”, because his entity is the one acting most malicious at the moment. Vash has only taken over once, and doesn’t want Kendal to let him again, Life only shows up to be a deus ex machina, and only when there’s enough power available. And we all know what V.D. wants. The only problem with having an “I know you’re in there fight” with Erin is that we just need Dainix to come in all firey, and we know who wins. So the only way it can hold narrative tension is if Dainix is unable to fight. Like…. if he’s trapped in his own mind reliving his worst moments. Oh, shoot.
THATS what’s wrong with this page’s composition! All day I’ve been wondering what was wrong with the last panel that looked so strangely ominous that was setting me on edge… it’s the way Dainix is drawn and the vaguely ominous camera angle. Hiding the face is a tried and true “something is wrong” indicator and it’s obvious that Dainix isn’t doing good because he’s stopped struggling but if he was just tired/unconscious Red would’ve made that more clear. Now there’s a chance nothing’s wrong and we’re being paranoid but still.
I think it’s just continuity, the last page had the audience view Dainix face-on from Alinua’s POV so now when the ‘camera’ has does a rough 180 and zooms out we end up viewing Dainix from behind. Besides which Dainix ended the last page facing in an established direction and has neither the opportunity nor any reason on this page to look elsewhere
The Weeping Shadow releases the Demon from it’s dark prison … wow that sounded more evil than I expected.
Love that final panel; life swirls re-establishing dominion over the wood, the strain it has on Alinua, and how, through fire and arm-like skeletal branches, the glort tries to fight back around her. No SFX here, probably to emphasise the seriousness and/or slowness; just as well because that “SHLP” in panel 2 is actually a little humorous.
Now that I think about it, Alinua and Dainix have probably interacted the least out of the other gang character pairings; I can’t recall them sharing more that a few sentences between them, let alone a full conversation. I kinda want to see them interact some more; they do share similar self-exile due to strange elemental powers backstory and both have had bleak outlooks to their own futures.
Prediction for next week: As Alinua tries to help Dainix out, she gets intercepted by the trauma eyes. I wonder if we’ll see only her tragic backstory segments or whether Life may get hit by them too.
The evil-sounding summary sounds like a really fun story prompt, regardless of whether the two are as Tragically Misunderstood as these two or if it’s played utterly straight.
Definitely the good character backstories and the ways they interact with each other. One of my worst pet peeves is when a character seems 2D or doesn’t react in the way they should based off their background, and this story is the perfect example of solid characters!
Between the worldbuilding, the art, and the characters. Which I know is basically all of the comic, but the worldbuilding works SO WELL, the art is SO BEAUTIFUL, and the characters are SO POLISHED.
wait i forgot the writing the writing is SO ENGAGING
I’m not sure what it is that keeps me glued to this comic: this is not normally my scene. I just always want to know what happens next; what plot threads are going to end up being connected; how the characters are going to react to the last panel; what intense Cohen Bothers level of detail the next one off side character is going to have. I just decided to check out what else was coming from the creators of OSP and I was instantly hooked.
‘twould appear that way, looking through the Archive this is already the longest chapter by a fair margin, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to for it to end up at double the average length
You know, for this entire glort encounter, I’ve had this nagging voice in the back of my head saying, “Okay, but what if the glort isn’t actually malicious or adversarial, but is just trying to communicate and has no other means to do so?”
YES HAHA I HATH FINALLY CAUGHT UP AFTER INTERMITTENTLY BINGING THE COMIC WOOOOOOOOOOOOO i am literally in love with this comic, like the artstyle and writing and development, it’s seriously the biggest inspiration
aw no i hafta wait for the next paggee
oh well
For mobile readers.
Alt-text: it’s full of fun prizes!

Screaming “NO MORE”, she magicks apart
The Evil Tree which in Jeff had its start
Holy shit Alinua
Welp this is still bad, the bossfight is still going and Dainix is still caught up in it. I feel like something very bad or at least dramatic is going to happen on the next page
Kendal where the FUCK are you when the plot needs the edge of your sword???
Well at least they’ll be pretty easy for him to find, what with all the yelling, screaming, lights, and progressively larger glorb!
Woah what a cool panel!
I love both panels one and five for their energy and passion!
nom nom nom

Nothing an artist does is without purpose or intention in their work. Even if they’re not conscious of doing so. The mind is a tricky thing/process.

oh wow
Danix, mate, you’re looking a little…
How do I put this nicely?
Your skin is looking pretty mottled grey-black and I fear for your physical wellbeing.
Erin’s gonna need to do a lot more work lol
Uh sir, we’ve been informed that’s just his poncho.
dainix didn’t spend too long lost in the sauce, thankfully. hopefully the Trauma Goop didn’t activate…
Anonymous Aurora Question #27: What’s your favourite aspect of the comic?
The art and the characters
There’s too many to try and get one singular favorite, but maybe the character dynamics? Or the art? Or the story?
floof
Actually I have to say… hmm… idk! i guess the hover text? the floof is obviously superb tho
Definitely the good character backstories and the ways they interact with each other. One of my worst pet peeves is when a character seems 2D or doesn’t react in the way they should based off their background, and this story is the perfect example of solid characters!
Tho the art is also ✨AMAZING✨

Dainix.
Hand drawn art. story told well, memorable characters, thoughtful worldbuilding and heart. Heart because in it is done with such love and care
alinua just went war doctor
I think she’s more in the same state of mind as when Ten briefly went mad, but we’ll see how the next few pages go.
OMG ANOTHER DOCTOR WHO FAN AHHHHH
Kendal and Falst had their life changing fieldtrip/prison sentence/cave time with Dainix. Now it’s Alina’s turn.
snacky snack
y’know, this is a whole lot of “incredibly dangerous Thing” for a site that was deemed “too boring”
When was this site deemed too boring? Researchers shouldn’t find an ancient ruin boring.
If I recall correctly, after an amount of Poking Around that was evidently Not Enough.
Red: “Zelda item get music”
My brain instantaneously for some reason: “Cave Story health upgrade music, got it.”
NOOOO HIS PONCHO IS SUPER DUPER GROSS NOW
NOT THE PONCHO!!!
the peril of wearing white when adventuring
Go go go Alinua!!!
Loving the dynamic poses in this page, especially that last panel.
TL;DR: unboxing videos, but as an anime.
Alinua in that last panel is me opening tough soft plastics
*zipper noise*
Alinua has opened the floodgates
Watch out glorts
She has no more patience for glowy black bad things eating her friends
she’s not taking any more bad
Alinua is a certified badass. We love her.
Not related to the page, which is great, but am I wrong to assume that this chapter will just end up being over 60 pages long?
‘twould appear that way, looking through the Archive this is already the longest chapter by a fair margin, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to for it to end up at double the average length
Damn Alinua looks cool.
Silly cave goo, you thought you could beat the woman who tore open a mountain?
You know how we were talking about how we needed Tom Bombadil last page? Yeah, Alinua’s got that covered
You know, for this entire glort encounter, I’ve had this nagging voice in the back of my head saying, “Okay, but what if the glort isn’t actually malicious or adversarial, but is just trying to communicate and has no other means to do so?”
That last panel could be a powermetal album cover
