His gear gets restored afterwards though, and presumably his gut flora and so forth. So there’s a chance the infection would merely be suspended for the duration of the transformation. In which case, I wonder if he can take passengers into flame form with him.
im sorry but WHAT pray tell is cracking on panel 4??? is he grabbing the table? is that the medicine reacting to blood? did his eyes open REALLY REALLY forcefully? is it his sanity? falst buddy are you ok???
He applies it to a cloth on the wound,
With kitridine for his friend he cares.
Falst wakes with a scream, in agony writhes,
With claws his friend’s shoulder tears.
When your medicine makes a “ssss” sound when applying it to wounds, you know it stings.
The careful measuring of drops, a moment to inhale before applying, his sympathetic look; Dainix doesn’t just know kitridine hurts because he was told it does, he’s had to take some before. And looking at his own shoulder, especially after the final panel, he’ll need to take some for himself in a bit.
As for that sudden “CRACK”, going by the yellow-Falst colour of the SFX, I think it’s representing the sudden and great jolt of pain he’s feeling. Those jagged lightning marks around it and False give me the impression of nerves and pain receptors all going off; Dainix gets them too when Falst grabs his shoulder in the last panel.
@TheUnknownGame With regards to your comment from last page, while lashing out at people with claws is a very domestic cat reaction, it’s probably more a case of pain plus exhaustion fuelled PTSD informing Falst’s reaction.
Prediction for next week: A bit more blind pain struggling before Falst comes to his senses. Maybe Falst might finally divulge at least a snippet of his backstory to Dainix.
I mentioned in that comment that my rant was peeve-based; that peeve is people taking the behaviors of one species and applying those behaviors onto other species (like when people write all sorts of animals as waving their tails in happiness, even though that’s a uniquely canine trait). So people expecting Falst to behave like a domestic cat when he’s actually a ferin ticked me off. I apologize if I’ve come off as rude because of it.
It’s all good, applying the “All animals are dogs” trope to real life and/or serious fiction is certainly peeve worthy (unlike the “Dragons are cats” trope; that one will never get old). The memory of treating my own cat was fresh in my mind, and the joke wrote itself.
Is panel seven where Falst reacts in pain close enough to count as cat-like @Evil Tree? I also love how the cry of pain carries over from panel five to panel six to emphasize how much pain Falst is in. Excellent style Red!
ah– I felt that in my chest– dear flying frizzledrops…
…
…Dainix just got clawed in the exact same place twice in no more than a few minutes by the by.
Yeah… yeah, how many alt texts have amounted to “Falst is totally fine you guys” in this chapter? I’m kinda worried about his… everything right now.
It doesn’t look like Falst did that on purpose in the slightest, looking at his outstretched arm in the second–to–last panel, which is honestly impressive. Getting held down like that aint fun even WITHOUT the disorientation he must be feeling right now. mmmaybe it would’ve been a good idea to try to wake him up first – Dainix’s got plenty of stinky stuff to stick under his nose – but ah well, hindsight 20 – 20.
Artistic props for the synesthesic effect of bright vivid SFX in a dark room– it’s just something… so much louder than the darkness… Honestly it’s kind of a vibe how comics get to have the challenge of not only projecting (usually) 3D environments onto a 2D plane, but also 6 senses onto just one (sight).
Yes I do mean 6 senses, proprioception counts, in my opinion, for all the times comics end up having to portray someone being off–balance somehow.
Smell is a funky one (heh), it’s kinda interesting how, for example, perfume commercials are basically just some kinda… vibe setpieces? Like, we don’t have smell–o–vision, perfume is LITERALLY just about the smell… it’s something alright. They never really even attempt do describe it, they just go off on trying to invoke some kind of feeling in the viewer – strength, adventure, freedom, desire, something with the Moon idk–
There’s the thing with invoking feelings again – like half the effects in this page are completely non–literal – the CRACKING– the sparks of nerve lighting— more internal senses, beyond even 6—
So yeah, yet again, VISCERAL is the word.
Anyway yeah I know I’m kind of rambling — good thing Alinua & Erin are on their way at least. Maybe they can follow the sounds of anguished screaming…
…y’know, I’ve wondered ever since comicaurora.com/aurora/1-10-22/ how Falst can punch anything at all without impaling his own hand with claws like that. But I guess he did impale his hand when he punched solid rock recently, so maybe he’s just that tough that it takes that kinda impact to cut his skin. Makes ya wonder about those cave crawlers…
The line between salt water, iodine, rubbing alcohol, and hand sanitizer are super thin (bc ow), and rn my hyperempathy laden flashbacks are leaning more towards the latter (bc ow)
Absolutely cackling that my off handed joke of ‘uh oh kitty gonna scratch, better watch yourself Dainix’ actually came true
but I know for a fact that once that novelty wears off I’m probably gonna start feeling some things the longer I stare at the last 4 panels… oop there it is. oh god… oh god it hurts… oh no i’m crying again
And going onto the list of concerns below emaciated troglodytes, flammable gas, BIG BUGS, visibility, and prior injuries, we can now add the prospect of catscratch fever!
There once was a guy with an eyepatch
Who was in a hurry to dispatch
First aid to a cat,
Who didn’t like that,
And for his trouble he got a big scratch.
Dainix in the last panel: it was at this moment, he knew… he f*cked up. (But also not.)
Alternatively: “I’m trying to save your life, *sshole!”
So now that’s two other members of the group that Falst has grievously clawed, and Dainix doesn’t even have a healing factor about it (unless he’s transformed). To be fair, Falst is in incredible pain and a blind rage…
Right before he put on the kitridine, Dainix looks like he took a moment, likely preparing for the likely scenario of getting his face clawed off by an angry cat boy.
Sorry it took me so long, I was doing other things. This week it’s V.D. versus Darkstalker of the Nightwings (a dragon) from the book series Wings of Fire.
(A quick note, for this fight I am assuming that V.D. has his own body back, not operating through Erin, because it could be rather unfair if his body was always fighting him.)
Darkstalker was hatched under three full moons, and because of this he can read minds and see the future. The version I am using of him is also huge, since he is two thousand years old. Darkstalker’s most powerful ability is animus magic. With this, he can enchant anything to do anything, at the price of his soul. He has used this magic to make himself immortal and invulnerable to most forms of harm, including starvation, poison, fire, extreme cold, and good old-fashioned stabbing. In short, he is terrifying. Who do you all think would win in a fight?
As I understand it from reading when I was 12, an Animus can just do whatever they want, only limited by their imagination or other animus magic, unless they make themselves immune. So either Voidy one-shots him before he can properly counter the magic (similar to how he’s beaten in the books, by getting around his invulnerability and taking him out before he develops a countermethod) or Voidy loses.
honestly i feel like the fact that VD is the literal embodiment of entropy makes this sorta one sided. As he stated earlier, Void can’t wither, as he literally is the withering. sure, darkstalker could easily make himself immortal but even that didnt work in the long run. Void in his full dragon form could hold off 6 gods the size of the planet. i feel at best darkstalker would get voidy to run away, but i doubt that he could properly kill him.
the problem with this matchup is that darkstalker is basically a kid playing make-believe that can “nuh uh, I do this/you can’t do that” anything. His ability is genuinely just whatever he wants. He can just straight up pick a rock up and say “I enchant this rock to eliminate the concept of decay” and that would work.
A testament to the durability of wyrmsilk, and the genius of Ignan Ravvaan. On closer inspection, it does appear that Falst wasn’t grabbing at Dainix in panel 6, but trying to claw at him.
For mobile readers.
Alt-text: he’s fine
Oh great, now HE’S gonna need to disinfect, too.
Oh, that ship sailed when he got clawed by a cave crawler like two minutes ago
Dainx just needs to get outside and go flamey-form for a minute, he’s a living autoclave.
Ooooo…Nice point =)
His gear gets restored afterwards though, and presumably his gut flora and so forth. So there’s a chance the infection would merely be suspended for the duration of the transformation. In which case, I wonder if he can take passengers into flame form with him.
Call now, and get a second laceration FREE!
This might be the largest speech bubble in the comic. Not that I’ve measured…
Hahaha!
Gah, right in the open wound!
falst no
Hahaha, @SerifStones called it perfectly
im sorry but WHAT pray tell is cracking on panel 4??? is he grabbing the table? is that the medicine reacting to blood? did his eyes open REALLY REALLY forcefully? is it his sanity? falst buddy are you ok???
I think it’s his sanity. Or at least not an audible, real sound.
I think it’s a representation of the pain he’s feeling – the lightning effect behind the word as well.
There’s a small sizzle sound by the wound. I assume that is the medicine reacting with blood. As for the crack…no clue
I think that’s his eye cracking open really dramatically.
They bright yellow text for the sound effect tells me this disinfectant is lightning elemental. I guess it fries the bacteria like a short circuit.
Not the first element I would guess to be used for a disinfectant, but the others probably work poorly on an Ignan.
I think that hissing effect is just in yellow because that’s Falst’s effects colour.
Honestly it’s the most likely explanation.
But I still want to have fun with elechemy theoretical nonsense, so nyeh.
I think it’s his ribs
(look, I’m up late enough- early enough?- to catch an update! …thats not a good thing.)
Red’s really got the hang of visualizing tortured screaming, I’m almost physically hurt by this page.
Up above: “Do you hear that, Erin? That is the sound of ultimate suffering…”
He applies it to a cloth on the wound,
With kitridine for his friend he cares.
Falst wakes with a scream, in agony writhes,
With claws his friend’s shoulder tears.
Good ol’ Falst, unintentionally harming others when they are trying to help you!
Man, Falst’s been getting so many nice, cosy naps today, hasn’t he?
When your medicine makes a “ssss” sound when applying it to wounds, you know it stings.
The careful measuring of drops, a moment to inhale before applying, his sympathetic look; Dainix doesn’t just know kitridine hurts because he was told it does, he’s had to take some before. I wish I saw Evil Tree’s post BEFORE typing my own! Oh well, Narf! Hey Mickie Evil TREE posted no to cat like!
When is Falst gonna get a break
When is he gonna get a break?
I feel you Falst, but don’t scratch poor Dainix!!! Alinua and Erin really need to hurry!
Looks like Dainix is going to need to apply some of that to his own cat-scratches.
That is not the funnest way to get scratches in that area. <.<
well I guess at least he’s awake now
Does.. Does this stuff mend broken bones?
FALST IT’S FOR YOUR OWN GOOD

Antiseptics hurt him badly
And so he just thrashes madly
Baby’s first experience with iodine be like:
The line between salt water, iodine, rubbing alcohol, and hand sanitizer are super thin (bc ow), and rn my hyperempathy laden flashbacks are leaning more towards the latter (bc ow)
oww, buddy
Absolutely cackling that my off handed joke of ‘uh oh kitty gonna scratch, better watch yourself Dainix’ actually came true

Hopefully (1) Falst doesn’t actually carry toxoplasmosis and/or (2) Falst doesn’t play with his own shit.
There once was a guy with an eyepatch
Who was in a hurry to dispatch
First aid to a cat,
Who didn’t like that,
And for his trouble he got a big scratch.
Dainix: Hey, you. You are finally awake!
You two have GOT to stop hurting each other, please. For my sake.
Oh jeez, what a cruel moment to finally catch up. Now I have to wait for updates like a common fool.
Has anyone mentioned how Danix looks like he’s on the verge of tears in panel 6?
Dainix in the last panel: it was at this moment, he knew… he f*cked up. (But also not.)
Alternatively: “I’m trying to save your life, *sshole!”

“See how YOU like it!”
-Falst in the last panel, probably
Can I just say that Falst’s pose in panel 5 is amazing?
TL;DR: You’re gonna need some of that stuff too, doc.

If dark stalker has literally any time to prepare, he wins. If voidy sneak attacks him without him knowing what’s going off, voidy wins.
Why didn’t dark stalker give himself an absurd healing factor? It would have covered almost any blind spot he has
What going on, not off
I mean, he did? He gets his eye ripped out at some point and it just makes him angry.
honestly i feel like the fact that VD is the literal embodiment of entropy makes this sorta one sided. Yea you know what catboy I’d probably scream like that too
so uhh
falst isnt going to drag his claws down dainix’s skin, riiightt?
Had a feeling that might happen
Why does falst look like he has tetnis? Dude, are you sure your THAT hard to break?
A testament to the durability of wyrmsilk, and the genius of Ignan Ravvaan. On closer inspection, it does appear that Falst wasn’t grabbing at Dainix in panel 6, but trying to claw at him.
…a VERY good thing he had that poncho, then.
