The light fades, and Kendal, eyes opening, collapses;
Through the earth, divine Vash’s soul descends.
Falst catches Kendal, Alinua’s healing glows-
Kendal lies surrounded by his friends.
Falst caught Kendal. His hand is on Kendal’s right shoulder. But now if I don’t look at Falst’s hand my view goes back and forth whether the trailing arm is his or Kendal’s.
Why do I get the feeling Kendal wasn’t expecting to live through summoning Vash?
(Also, are we sure Tynan’s body isn’t strong enough to take on a life of its own with Tynan in a knife?)
I think Tahraim’s knife works differently to Chimera Mom’s, as my theory it that it was made just for Tynan, and it was originally commissioned by Calliban. Though most people think Chimera Mom went to Tahraim, I think Chimera Mom is to much of a loner to ask Tahraim for help. I think Tynan’s body get either sucked into the knife or de-incarnated by it.
♫ Here comes the boy! ♫ HellooooohhH NO! Heals! Heals! Heals!
Oh yeah, Falst’s arm is still broken, isn’t it? Not the one he’s catching Kendal with, but having to break the fall of old metal-bones with one arm must be strenuous. I wonder if the new cover art is referencing that break or an older injury.
Kendal looks bad here, but he’s getting Alinua’s aid immediately so everything should be fine. However, if they’re staying put healing Kendal they can’t move much, and the Paladins might be on high alert after V.D.’s involvement. Then again, I didn’t see the archive’s shield in 1-18-13, so maybe Tynan did destroy it and the Junior Archivist is the only one left in the area.
Lodrelhai, I think the situations are very different. Vash’s body is unusual, at least as far as the other gods we’ve seen have been. Zuurith formed a temporary body each time he manifested, hence why Tynan could destroy it so easily. Same with other gods we’ve seen. Tynan’s humanoid form was also very temporary – when Vash fought him the first time, the prob,em was that, while Vash could easily destroy Tynan’s bodies, he couldn’t do anything to Tynan the storm, and Tynan could easily re-manifest new bodies. His dragon form was much more solid, so maybe if that had been left whole, but even then I’m not sure it would happen.
From what I understand, Vash’s body was different, in that it was the same body Vash inhabited each time, like with the massive golems. The current in-story theory as to why Kendal awoke is that Vash consistently inhabiting the same body for centuries rubbed off a bit of soul which became Kendal. Given what we’ve seen about Kendal’s soul seemingly flowing between himself and the sword Kendal indicates that’s not the full story. But either way, Vash’s situation was rather unique, and a storm god is a lot less… connected to anything. So it seems unlikely there would be any body after Tynan becomes imprisoned in the blade.
Woah.
I don’t know if the chapter cover dropped before this and I just didn’t notice, but I’m gonna start with a few theories: Google will tell you that petrichor is more or less ‘first rain’, specifically the smell that accompanies the first rain in a long time. From a literal sense that’s… sort of the opposite of what’s happening, but given the rest of the cover, I don’t think it’s that literal. For another thing: all the weird glowy orange… soul goop? that’s coming out of them seems to relate to magic. Erin’s void tattoo, Alinua’s arm birthmark, Tess’s scars, Dainix’s eye. I’m not sure what this is exactly, just that is probably magic of some kind. So why, then, does Falst have anything at all? His body texts magic. He does have a broken arm, but I’m not sure it’s the correct arm . It could be some sort of magic radiation from the lacroma, idk.
Fascinating stuff.
There once was a boy named Kendal
Who collapsed into a fall
Upon Falst’s arm
Much to the alarm
Of his friends one and all.
I interpreted the last panel as the start of another dream sequence with Vash and Kendal, not Vash’s essence slipping away. I guess we’ll see which it is on Wednesday.
Oh? It looks like Kendal’s about to have another dream! He and Vash won’t be parted so soon after all. If that is what’s happening, I think we’ll be seeing either Vash giving Kendal a concerned reprimand over Kendal f*cking shanking himself, or we’ll be seeing Vash’s and/or The Collector’s reaction to what Kendal did.
I think Kendal was about to say “Why am I still here?” He fully expected to kill himself, or at least have his soul shunted out of his body permanently to make way for Vash, with his own soul going back to whence it came (perhaps the sword). He might not have any memory of what Vash did while possessing him; in fact, Vash being forced back out might’ve been Kendal regaining consciousness for a second. If so, he’ll probably think he’s failed Vash just by existing, since he evidently doesn’t think of his own well-being whatsoever or even consider himself a person, just a tool meant to save Vash. Next chapter will probably focus on all his friends slapping him across the face with reasons to care about staying alive and being his own person.
Wait… isn’t this the second time that Kendall has actually fallen asleep?
And didn’t he get to talk to Vash last time?
Do we get to see a Vash/Kendall heart to heart in the next few pages?
Is something going to go really wrong because the collector finds out?
So many questions, and so little answers…
I’ve just had a thought; what if that final panel is showing Vash returning to the collector? Maybe next page will be in Stone’s third heart as we see the fallout of Vash’s outing. If the Collector has been paying attention, she’s bound to suspect he’s getting outside help at least.
“Why am I alive?” Kendal asks before promptly dying. I’m ready for another dope dream sequence from the inside of the Collector’s Ball of Doom (trademark pending).
given kendall’s delerious question, i dont think he expected to survive that ordeal. im also wondering if that last panel is just athstetics, or vash calling him up for a stern talking to about no more heroic sacrifices.
I want to start off by saying that the new chapter cover is absolutely GORGEOUS. And regarding the golden marks, as far as I can tell they highlight everyone’s scars, all except for Alinua that is. Her marks highlight something else, quite possibly her magic. But I think it refers to scars and not magic for everyone else because if it was just magic then you’d think that Erin’s tattoos would be glowing too, and Falst wouldn’t be glowing at all
And also, I too was confused when I first saw Falst catching Kendal, mostly because I couldn’t tell that he was falling
Given that we now know the next chapter is called, and the title is one of my favorite words, I just want to point out some fun etymology! “Petrichor” is a compound of two Greek words: “Petros”, which means rock or earth, and “Ichor”, which means blood (IIRC this one has connotations of divine blood, but I could very much be wrong). So a literal translation would be something like “the blood of the earth.”
@SarissaTeiflingDruid it doesn’t have to be magic at all. Flast and Kendal don’t have any, and also why wouldn’t Erin’s tattoos be covered in this glop? i think it has a simpler explanation.
they seem to be where they are all scarred. specifically in the places most life changing. Dainix burned his eye out with guilt. Tess was chosen by the sky. Erin was marked by the void dragon (something which tells me that the “tattoo” is more or less a scar at this point. it’s not going away easily, or at all).
for Alinua, who could heal from any wound, the most marking thing about her is her life tatoo birthmarks; both physically and mentally scarring her. her entire life has been dictated by them, and i think that has certainly taken it’s toll.
speaking of tolls, Falst seems to just have a cluster of injuries that we haven’t really seen the sources of. his entire life has been nothing but being beaten and broken, so it makes sense that there isn’t just one thing marking him.
and then we have Kendal. all of these marks seem to be from the last sef(?) or so of him actually being alive. his entire life he has been accumulating these wounds, and he’s given them no time to heal. he’s cracking apart much more than the others, and it seems like his wounds out of everyone’s least represent any actual damage. at least with Falst’s wounds they look like scratch marks and broken skin; Kendal just looks like a statue breaking apart (which i get is sort of the symbology that is going on here, but Kendal seems to be taking it much more literally than everyone else). he seems to think he’s indestructible (or disposable. one of the two) and he’s tearing himself apart at the seams.
2 other things i would like to note:
Alinua’s tears and magic are lit up in the same glow. i don’t really have an explanation for the latter, other than it’s healing magic and she’s trying to heal Kendal. but the former definitely makes me think that her emotions are another big factor as to how she has been scarred. over her entire life, she’s had to bottle them up or risk ruining everything around her. a big pressure that has only recently been released.
and the second thing; Falst’s largest scar seems to be a nasty mark placed exactly where Kendal kicked him when he was first introduced. Considering he wasn’t on the best terms with the floof squad, and didn’t stick around long afterwards, it makes sense he healed that on his own as well. but it makes me think that Kendal left quite a mark on Falst, in more ways than one. considering he is also front and center on the page, i think he’s going to have a big role in the upcoming chapter.
What is Kendal? A construct? A life form? An entirely new species? What did Alinua do to it? How can Alinua keep healing people as if it’s her eldritch BLAST!?
I agree with Acevolts. Lots of character relationships revealed in panels four and five showing relationships with no words, I see Dainix becoming more human-like looking at Kendal. Falts grabbing Kendal with his good arm looking concerned, and in Five Falts eyes turn to Alinua’s with a pleading look while Alinua’s eyes are fixed Kendal’s face as healing magic pours out of her towards Kendal. Erin and Tess faces show the same worry and concern. Brilliant!
Can we talk about the foreshadowing in the chapter 16 cover art!?? I feel dumb looking back on it. Kendall had two shadows, one with blue eyes (Vash) and a sword. That just happened to stick out through the middle of Kendall’s normal shadow. Might just be looking to deep into it but you never know. Seeing how well this foreshadowing was done chapter 19s cover definitely doesn’t look good for the floof squad.
Something to keep in mind: while “petrichor” is indeed the world for the scent associated with the first rain after a long hot and dry spell (due to aromatic volatiles in the rocks being kicked up), it also translates as approximately “stone’s blood” (petra = stone, ichor = blood). So while in a purely technical take it doesn’t make a lot of sense (the scent is rapidly washed back out of the air by any significant amount of rain), it might have a slightly less obvious meaning. Or… maybe not? Very curious to see where Red takes it.
As for the gold in the chapter cover, I have to wonder if it isn’t at least partially a reference to kintsugi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kintsugi). All of them have gold focusing around an area where they’ve been “broken” in one form or another, and as other has noted, they seem to be focused on major “life events” (the things that remain part of you even if you recover from them).
Hopefully this doesn’t double-post… I’m wondering if the gold in the chapter cover is a reference to kintsugi (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kintsugi). Each of them seems to have gold focused around some part of them tied to major life-altering events, things that in some ways “broke” who they were previously and which they had to incorporate into their lives moving forward…
I think that the chapter title, Petrichor ( Petra-stone, ichor,-god blood, referers to the fact that our protaganists feel defined by their connections to gods and primordials, and with out it they are nothing (like stone statues). As in their entire being is defined by these connections, and otherwise they are stone and not alive.
the new chapter cover looks dope, everyone is bioluminecent. its excellent. slightly worried that kendal wont shake off the stab wound like he usually shakes off his wounds though.
The transition between concerned parent to sad puppy gets me every time.
Also i can’t help but giggle at falst’s ‘holy shit how is he possibly this heavy?’ look in panel 4
looking at the new chapter art and getting very much reminded of the Japanese art of Kintsugi (repairing broken pottery with gold) as a means of thematically portraying the beauty in their imperfections and how so many of them have made mistakes and suffered and it has changed them in no small way but there’s a strange kind of beauty in the acknowledgement of that pain and that together they may be able to overcome it
also as soon as i saw it i was thrown for a loop because oh god i didn’t even consider that it might take a good long while before Kendal is able to actually move again. But now i’m kind of loving the idea that maybe it’s not just going to be Kendal having some kind of dream sequence and then waking up right as rain.
Red I am so sorry but in the last panel I keep seeing him as though he’s upright and the arm is his body and vice versa.
Seriously the first time I saw it I spent too long trying to figure out why his arm was suddenly INCREDIBLY bulky
Other than that though, finally! Pt 4 of the Kaiju battle is probably over! They can relax now right?
For mobile readers.
Alt-text: naptime!

Can I just say I love the last panel, it’s so pretty
Given the next chapter cover, I’m worried how this chapter will continue…
For a second I thought had Falst just smacked him across the face for no reason, then I realised that was Kendal’s arm
I don’t think Kendal wasexpecting, or even wanting, to come back.
Also, if I had a Won(₩) for every scratch, bruise, and cut Kendal has..
oooooooooh that looks like a good nap
Ahh, classic Magical Girl de-transformation
My boy lookin singed
yep, i knew it! i called it!
KENDAL NO CMON MAN WE JUST GOT YOU BACK now everyone will have to pace around for a few hours while you heal
He needs some frienship smacked into him (and maybe some healing)
The light fades, and Kendal, eyes opening, collapses;
Through the earth, divine Vash’s soul descends.
Falst catches Kendal, Alinua’s healing glows-
Kendal lies surrounded by his friends.
@Dusty, can’t unsee that now.
Wait did Falst smack or hug Kendal I’m confused.
Ahh I see Red is burning the old 3am oil again.
Falst caught Kendal. His hand is on Kendal’s right shoulder. But now if I don’t look at Falst’s hand my view goes back and forth whether the trailing arm is his or Kendal’s.

Ok, so he’s basically dead now
Let us believe in Ali somehow
………shirtless? I don’t know either, bud. That’s a question to ask the illustrator.

Well Kendal that is a VERY interesting philosophical question
Love me some wordless storytelling
TL;DR: Everyone panic, your god-guy is having health problems.
That cover makes me nervous. Remember that whole ‘magic consuming you’ thing or something? Yeah the similarities make me nervous.
May I just say, you’re looking a little crispy there Kendal
Oh? It looks like Kendal’s about to have another dream! He and Vash won’t be parted so soon after all. Great. Kendal just got rid of all that blue fire, and now he’s surrounded by a bunch of blue water. Ugh.
“Why am I…”
Mood.
I think the thing on Falst’s arm on the next cover is where he broke it.
Kendal: why am I alive?

Dude, the new chapter cover is GORGEOUS! WOW, the composition and the gold cracks, it’s so cool!
Cue “Bleeding Out” by Imagine Dragons.
Or possibly “Way Down We Go.”
Kat,
That is the same question everyone’s been asking about you from the beginning.
TheWookie:
I actually talked about the kintsugi allegory in my last post on the previous page; I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed!
two details I am loving.
1) The expression of Danix in crucifix mode. Those eyes man!
2) The blue starlight looks like a tear falling from Vash’s eye.
Bad joke to teye this all togehter
Floof sqaud votes on Kendal not stabbing himself anymore. the Eyes have it!
okay, that was bad, eye’ll see myself out
why am i like this

Why are any of us, Kendal? Protagonist out here asking the big questions.

Kendal just swooned
The transition between concerned parent to sad puppy gets me every time.

No, Kendal! My Lawful good boi!!
For a second I thought Falst bitchlapped Kendal, and I wasn’t even mad xD
Red I am so sorry but in the last panel I keep seeing him as though he’s upright and the arm is his body and vice versa.
Seriously the first time I saw it I spent too long trying to figure out why his arm was suddenly INCREDIBLY bulky
Other than that though, finally! Pt 4 of the Kaiju battle is probably over! They can relax now right?
Kendal channeling his inner Kingdom Hearts protagonist.
Red, you’re a monster. I hope the tears you have wrung from me sustain you.
