I’m guessing that whatever Vash did to Kendal is something that is unsustainable for long periods of time and he wouldn’t want Tynan to overhear as it could be exploited as a weakness should Tynan rise to power again
Also looking forward to seeing what Mr Metaphors is going to do to Tynan. Very excited to see how strong he can be when he chooses to involve himself in a fight. Or maybe he’ll just give Tynan therapy until he evaporates ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
oh man. tahraims expressions. hes the guy who knows exactly what’s happening and what’s going to happen and takes delight in everyone tearing their hair out in frustration when he’s cryptic.
He adds, “Okay, NOW you should probably go.”
Vash agrees, strides off, but the rest stay-
He turns, “…guys?” “What did you do to Kendal?! Falst replies.
“OH! Not here. Come on!” and off they have to hurry.
Sorry I got this done late, I was up late last night writing something unrelated that I’m probably going to put on my AO3 when it’s finished.
I suspect that Kendal and Vash has effectively merged, ‘Kendal’ as we knew him was after all a piece of Vash. This ‘Vash’ appears to have all of Kendal’s memories. I suspect the ‘OH!’ was Kendal/Vash realising that his friends don’t see Kendal right now, they see Vash, and some explaining is necessary, but to Kendal/Vash nothing has changed, he just finally has his full (or something close to it) power again and is once again in a single piece.
So kind of unrelated to the page but I was bored and thought it would be a brilliant idea to choose an Aurora panel to do a redraw of in my style. So I chose the Erin face reveal because he’s my favourite and it’s a really pretty panel and I forgot about his tattoos and I just got up to the arms and I regret everything. How do you do it, Red?
@Aarjel
ooooo, that’s a good point
I would’ve guessed the “OH!” was him noticing the Collector or something. it probably doesn’t help that he went “not here” and started running
Gonna make a bet. The moment Vash stops glowing blue, Red’s caption is gonna be related to being relieved about how she’s glad she doesn’t have to draw the sparkly effects anymore.
Or, if they’re fun to draw, about how she’s disappointed they’re gone
Expecting some interesting explanation stuff from the next page. Maybe it was Kendal all along just pretending, makes more sense than Vash escaping the collector at least.
SO i´m thinking vash didn´t actually take over, and kendal has just unlocked some measuere of is power and has been bluffing his ass off the entire time. PROPABLY isn´t true but it would be so funny to think if it was.
There once was a god of starfire
Who was facing a bit of ire
From his friends of floof.
He runs off–POOF!
They follow with concerned desire.
My two cents about the Vash/Kendal situation: I think it really is Vash in control, I don’t think Kendal is quite a good enough actor to pull it off–yet. I also think Vash is one of those rare gods who are true heroes in their own right and not just really powerful jerks, but that he can be a bit clueless, very much like Kendal, when it comes to dealing with mortals. Actually, the fact that Kendal is so clueless about some things seems to indicate that Vash would also be clueless about those things since Kendal has all of Vash’s knowledge and Kendal knows a lot about those things.
Vash is so great, too bad he’s probably going to be banished back to the tunnels once this is over. The floof squad running after him in the last panel is so funny. I do kind of get the feeling that Vash might see the floof squad as “his people” in some way, like how Zuurith did when Kendal first showed up. It seems like he’s a bit confused as to why they don’t just follow him. I don’t think he means to be rude; I think that’s just how he usually interacts with mortals.
Tynan is defeated, Zuurith has been shown up, and the gang is finally leaving this city. If it weren’t for the Kendal-Vash situation the gang would probably be happy right now.
Also saying something that Falst with a broken arm, Alinua who is always happy to heal a broken arm, and Erin with probably a million-and-one questions are all more concerned for Kendal than those matters. Maybe lingering concern for Kendal is also keeping Dainix alight. And Tess is … just as captivated by Alinua’s frown as we are (that or the man on fire).
Vash is unaccustomed to mortals NOT following his lead it seems, makes sense since the only sorta-Vash native is absent. Speaking of it seems Vash does know something about kendal, but the side glances from Zuurith and Tahraim make me think he doesn’t want to speak of it to other gods.
Prediction for next week: Either a) the gang regroups somewhere private for a exposition-angst dump courtesy of blue-boy. Or b) Tahraim does his cryptic and jokey retinue with captive audience Tynan, who will NOT be in the mood for it.
“We should clear out before things become too complicated”
Vash; my dude, that ship has sailed…
I agree with the posters who pointed out that his fellow God’s can see a/the difference between Kendal and Vash; I don’t think Kendal could have feasibly fooled the antagonist gods, faked being Vash?
Maybe in the absence of antagonist gods; the Floof squad doesn’t need a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_ex_machina
Tahraim has a funny story to tell, if the Floof squad doesn’t have time to listen to the forge god tell us all a story; who imagines there is time for Vash to offer an explanation of the situation, update us on Kendal’s situation?
Panel 8: The Lion, the Witch, and the Audacity of This B*tch
I imagine Falst and Dainix, while simultaneously concerned for Kendal and miffed at Vash, are both thinking, “We’re finally leaving Ba Sing Se Zuurith. Worst city ever!”
i agree with Called-by-Magic comment on Vash/Kendal.
Red likes multiple plot twists it seems. I still like Red’s style and still enjoy this story. Read you guys next week!
Vash/Kendal opinion
I think Kendal managed to pull Vash’s soul out from where he was imprisoned, and it really is Vash in charge right now. IMO, Kendal is *not* a good enough actor to fake actually being Vash- and Vash’s line about someone else killing Tynan to show him its possible kinda undermines the whole thing being an act, if it was.
Predictions are that this is either a temporary thing and we’ll get Kendal back after some kind of cooldown, OR the more fascinating one, Vash really is free from the Collector, and he wants to do something about her before this happens again. I… dont think he’ll give Kendal back yet if that’s the truth- as long as Floof Boi is safe, Vash will see this as an opportunity where he’s most powerful.
or Alinua yells at him until he does anyway lmao. She can be pretty persuasive.
Jeweled Cicada:
I don’t think he’s able to. The entirety of his soul is in Stone’s third heart, Kendal the sword, and Kendal the man. He can’t manifest anywhere else due to the limits of Kendal’s mortal body and due to his magically binding imprisonment within a soulcrystal bunker. Kendal is the only option Vash has for interacting with the world right now.
You know, if Tynan can be rehabilitated, I bet there are a lot of places like Windscrest that might be grateful for a helpful replacement storm. He couldn’t do anything about the Fire, Earth, or Life sections, but he could help out with Wind, Water, and Lightning.
1. Love this story ❤️
2. Once the junior archivist shows up and Kendal comes back we’ll officially have a 7 man band
3. I’m thinking either Vash and Kendal’s souls switched places, meaning Kendal is now in the Collector’s cage, or Kendal’s soul was drawn into the sword creating enough magical energy for Vash to reclaim his body. Either way, he probably doesn’t want to talk about the Collector in front of the other gods. Maybe to protect his image or maybe to prevent mass panic. Also, it’s probably a temporary situation, or at least one that can be reversed, though it might take them some time to figure out how to reverse it.
4. I really enjoy all of your guys’ comments, both on today’s and previous pages
I really like @DragonMaster’s second option, Vash being truly free now. It’s not very likely, but could lead to an interesting next chapter where the Collector tracks them down and takes him back. Could be a way for Red to show that even with everything they have, the floof squad is still underleveled for the big bad of the story. E.g. Ali still needs to properly figure out her connection to life, Erin needs to get a grip on Void, etc. before they can fight her. I don’t think it will be the case (there are a few issues like why wouldn’t the collector kill them if she got to them? Her plan is to wipe out all life, sparing the few who are planning to stop her would make no sense…), but it would be an interesting way to bring her back into the spotlight again.
Vash knows the gods will talk. Even Tahraim might spill some secrets.
I think he needs to keep the gods guessing on how, when, and if Vash can come back so they don’t mess with the gang.
I think Vash is still with the collector. As we’ve seen from Tynan and, uh, Gleicann (forest god from a while ago), a god’s power comes from their people. Vash doesn’t really have people, unless you count the floof squad, which imo is not enough to give him that much power. A few pages ago, Vash explained that the collector preserved him at the height of his power. I suspect he wouldn’t still be preserved if he was fully out of the collector’s grasp.
This makes me wonder about what happens when Vash gets freed. His people are gone. Will Vash die, in a way? Will he have created enough of a following by then as a sort of freelance vigilante? I don’t think he’d still be a city god.
oh, I love all of the oddly wholesome frames of the floof squad all together. especially that last frame of them all running after Vash/Kendal
on a side note, is Alinua like secretly fireproof or something?! just two pages ago she straight rested her hands on Vash’s starfire shoulders, and now she’s standing uncomfortably close to Dainix in his flame state without even noticing!? I couldn’t stand next to a small campfire that close, not to mention his flames are probably way hotter than most normal flames
Just found out about this comic earlier this week, read through all of it, and I really enjoy it! Love all the characters and lore and plot! It’s honestly inspiring me to make my own webcomic in the future. The very distant future for a number of reasons but the future nonetheless. But again, fantastic work!
After a brief moment of confusion at Falst’s outburst over the sword he is *very clearly* still holding, Vash has at long last discovered that Kendal named himself after Kendal (whether or not Kendal is Kendal)
I’m a bit surprised they seem to blame Vash for Kendall reviving him. Obviously i get they don’t want Kendall dead, but rescuing Vash was sorta the whole purpose of Kendall’s quest (along with stopping the witch). So Kendall finds a way to summon him and does.
My bet is on “not here” meaning “we can’t Do This here, with the gods that I just threatened listening in, where it’ll undermine those same threats”.
Kinda rough on the floof crew, if so, because they don’t really know Vash. They just met him, so they’re not going to go along with a “just trust me here” move.
God (pun intended) I love/hate how this guy just immediately starts acting like he’s not only their friend, but the established leader of this group. I guess he learned about them from Kendal’s daily prayers, and during his imprisonment just shifted to thinking of them as his new ‘city’ to replace the old one…poor guy.
literally no one in the floor squad is having a good time rn
also, and i know this is kind of off kilter a bit, but i feel like Tahraim would be an amazing Dungeon Master
In general, I really like the pacing and kind of humour of this one, it’s a really nice amount of levity to give a break from all of the drama, messiness and desperation from the previous pages, with the Tynan fight and Vash’s whole speech. Panel 4 should be used as a meme format in future
I don’t really have much else to say, but based on the panel pacing and the last panel’s placing of Tynan and Tahraim in the foreground, I suspect that next episode will be telling us what happens there as opposed to immediately following the floof squad’s talk with Vash
I’m pretty sure it’s canon that the gods can sense that Kendal is different from both gods and humans so they probably wouldn’t buy it if he was acting and I also don’t think Kendals that convincing of an actor
I really want to see Erin and Walter meet the Paladin with the Light Dragon. Please please please let me have more of my favorite character (I know he got a whole scene in this chapter but I guess I’m impatient to see where his character is heading).
I love how Tess is so oblivious to what’s actually going on but is just going along with it. Her face in panel four just says: that’s a serious mood, and that’s a flaming dude.
ET’s got a point — why should the FLOOF Squad be upset with Vash when Kendal’s the one who did the stab-and-switch? Though I’m sure Alinua’s mostly worried that Vash mostly intends to re-inhabit his vessel and nevermind Kendal.
$10 bucks says Vash has no idea how to get Kendal back.
I know I shouldn’t laugh… But Alinua’s grumpy face in panel 4
why do I get the feeling it’s not actually cash and just kendal being a stellar actor
Vashn’t finally gets to pretend to have any common sense whatsoever.
For mobile readers.

I love the silhouette of the floof squad in that first panel
Really highlights the floof
woah…. also i would like to say i love tahraim’s face. hes so calm and cryptic and knows more than literally everyone in the room. gotta love this guy
Whatever Tahraim is about to do, I don’t think Tynan’s about to have a good time. The look on Tahraim’s face is scary.
I’m guessing that whatever Vash did to Kendal is something that is unsustainable for long periods of time and he wouldn’t want Tynan to overhear as it could be exploited as a weakness should Tynan rise to power again

Aw, look at Tahraim’s cute lil’ smile.

The “what did you do to Kendal” frame perfectly sums up all these characters relationships with the protagonist
FALST THIS WHOLE PAGE
I’m betting that is just Kendal an he just figured pretending to be Vash would scare Tynan a lot more than Kendal woven in starfire.
I love how Tess is so oblivious to what’s actually going on but is just going along with it. Her face in panel four just says: that’s a serious mood, and that’s a flaming dude.
@Reu, well he’s looking at them, and says OH! after Falst asked what he did to Kendal, then says ‘not here’ after a pause… So yeah XD
