I love how it’s possible to just tell that this isn’t Kendal on body pose/face alone. Vash just looks so happy, Kendal’s always really tense when fighting. Great stuff.
And the glowy effects look great, that was definitely worth it
So, this is real cool and all, but how is Tynan, a storm capaple of turning entire cities into ruins, getting outmatched by a god of a city that *doesn’t even exist anymore*, and probably spent the last few weeks getting spiritually dissected by the collector? Is it the starfire? Because if so, that stuff must be really, really powerfull.
And leaping past the lunge of a claw, he faces a blast
Of thunder-cracking lightning,
He bisects the blast as he confidently smirks,
His blue glow glaringly brightening.
That boing! had me laughing.
Also, nice to be bact to chapter-1 style visual storytelling, especially with the improvement over the already good artwork of back then.
Wait, this is temporary right? We will have Kendal back at some point? ‘Cause I don’t want the story to end here 🙁 And it seems kinda pointless to continue if Vash can just take back Kendal. But I assume it’s only part of Vash’s soul in there so most of him is still stuck with the Collector.
I don’t think Vash’s soul is any weaker now than it was when he fought the Collector, I think he just ‘lost an anchor’ in the sense that he can’t really interact with the world as before. In essence, I don’t think he lost any power from losing his city, just his reach.
Vash: (Humming the Monster Hunter theme)
Oh the art in this page, just lovely. Panel 3 especially with the backing of Tynan’s yellow electric blast contrasting with Vash’s cyan starfire plus stylised SFX in between. I don’t need to know how long that took, just that it worked and is glorious.
Tynan has just dropped all boasting and talk; all focus now on attacking Vash. Thinking about it, attacking with his dragon form is probably Tynan’s best chance to win. Vash beat his previous humanoid form and clouds before, retreating would both lower his menace and still leave his storm vulnerable to starfire, so for Tynan it’s all or nothing right now.
Philosophical nitpicking I guess: Is it a kaiju fight if there’s only one big thing in the fight, or does it have to be two big things punching each other and the fight where there’s only one big thing is a “fight vs. kaiju?”
I guess that would be harder to say, so they’re both kaiju fights unless you’re being (too) precise.
vASH’S BONES are glowing! Star bones! AAAAAAAAAAAAA
The melting/dripping effect on the starfire is SICK. brb while I try to get this to make sense in my brain. It’s like it’s… Heavier than standard fire? More liquid? Gravity-weird? Physics go brr?
Anyway! WOW!
Wonder how the gossip among the gods will shift after this. Vash was very publicly dead. I feel like the entire rest of the comic plot could coast on the fallout of just this one fight and be fine, and I mean that as high praise.
Tynan gets his strength from being a scary storm — but the people have spent the last ten minutes watching him get clowned on by a bunch of mortals. Vash gets his strength from the loyalty of his people, and while his citizens are no more, he’s got Kendal’s friends to be his people now.
So yes: Tynan is being vanquished by The Power Of Friendship.
@ongoingconversationcuplet, I don’t think the story will end here, even if this was the end of the Vash and Kendal storyline there are still too many as of yet underdeveloped story elements such as: the void dragon subplot, Alinua being life’s vessel, Dainix and Caliban’s plan with him, just to name the big ones. So I don’t think it’s going to end very soon, there’s still so much story to tell
Red talks about a 5 man band/power of friendship crew made up of “all Lancers”
I think that means that everyone follows that trope, even protagonists…everyone who isn’t a NPC has a narrative, interesting backstory.
Requires a heavy lift in the world building &/but that pays off in audience investment in the created, fictional characters & their stories?
Is that what is happening? Like Kendal isn’t the be all/end all for this story; mebbe just an inciting incident, a story but not the story?
I heard that indigo is the “bad boy” and iIrc she took ownership of “inciting incident” and also there was talk of a round of drinks…
So many questions! Is Vash both here and in Collector’s prison? If yes, then natural for Vash would be to find the Collector and step them. If no, then can Collector “turn Vash off” or do they need to capture him again? If the Collector can simply “turn Vash off” then we’re in for a rollercoaster. If not, then oh boy, the plot thickens (and poor Tynan, we should get a emoji with them making the scared cat expression from a few pages ago). Also, is Kendal now Vash’s alterego? Or does Vash need to charge batteries a lot and that’s when Kendal’s awake? Aaa, so many questions!
@river rock if we assume that Red named Starfire very literally, as the fire of a star, like the Sun, then it might be more accurate to call it plasma than fire. that would explain its weird physics and fluid-ish matter
There once was a god who was shiny,
And although comparatively tiny,
He attacked the great beast
Four times, at least–
Now Tynan is going to feel whiny.
OH MY GOODNESS THE LAST PANEL. YES. I love how the fire turns into the swirly spirals that we’ve come to associate with Vash, it’s super cool and it does a good job of characterizing the magic as being his, if you get my drift (and Tynan in the corner like ‘aaaaaggghhhhh’ cracks me up) . Plus the decision to outline Vash in white and make the whole thing bule really sells how intense the light and heat of the starfire is.
So, does anyone else think that Vash is burning himself up here? He mentioned that the “totality of his essence” was drawn into Kendal, but between losing his domain and being tortured by The Collector, how much power does he actually have? Enough to finish off Tynan and maybe have a word with Zuurith and the gang, but he’s either gonna go back to the soul prison or burn up completely, leaving Kendal behind again.
I dunno, I have a lot of thoughts and nowhere to really put them
@Skye I am having a really hard time thinking of non-plot questions… So I’m gonna go with the first non-plot thing that popped into my head, which is “Can you teach me how to sword-fight?”
I have just binge-read this entire comic over the past 3 or 4 days and oh my god. This is SPECTACULAR. The character development, the glowy affects, the witty one liners, the various counts of possession, amazing!
For those viewing this on mobile.
Alt-text: “ask me how hard it was to stack two glowy effects on top of each other without losing detail. but don’t. I’ll cry”
“I’d say this valley only has FIVE more minutes before it floods!”
I love how it’s possible to just tell that this isn’t Kendal on body pose/face alone. Vash just looks so happy, Kendal’s always really tense when fighting. Great stuff.

Zer0 W0lf, you are a hero to us on mobile.
Thank you.
Dude, that second-to-last panel of Vash looks SIIICK! (Greatly resisted the urge to post “First!” 😉 )
Hey, this is like a reverse super powered evil side
So, this is real cool and all, but how is Tynan, a storm capaple of turning entire cities into ruins, getting outmatched by a god of a city that *doesn’t even exist anymore*, and probably spent the last few weeks getting spiritually dissected by the collector? Vash wasn’t lying, those panels really are too bright for mortals.
I can see the faint blue outline of Vash’s bones, neat effect
And leaping past the lunge of a claw, he faces a blast
Of thunder-cracking lightning,
He bisects the blast as he confidently smirks,
His blue glow glaringly brightening.
That boing! had me laughing.
Also, nice to be bact to chapter-1 style visual storytelling, especially with the improvement over the already good artwork of back then.
Here comes the finishing blow! This is gonna be amazing.
He slashes and tears, a mighty swarm
Of blows, swiftly dealt to the evil storm
Wait, this is temporary right? We will have Kendal back at some point? ‘Cause I don’t want the story to end here 🙁 And it seems kinda pointless to continue if Vash can just take back Kendal. But I assume it’s only part of Vash’s soul in there so most of him is still stuck with the Collector.
Jump, dodge, and deflect
Now the battle really starts!
AHHH IT BURNS MY EYES!
Oh my god are his bones glowing because they’ve got starmetal in them? I love this. I love this for a million years
@Stargazing Bookworm

“Whizt?!” “Fwoom?!” “Holy interjection, Batman!”
Super-Powered GOOD side?
Super powered cool side 😎
Woah. Bright indeed.
Let’s just face it, this whole chapter is overlapping Kaiju Fights! YAY!!!
Red the lighting in panel four. Just wow.
The onomatopoeia is strong with this one.
Alright, I’m joining the pile: the shading and lighting, and Vash’s eyes all look way better than they did in chapter 1.
I like Vash’s signature swirly patterns and blue starburst rays in the final panel. Just… this whole page is so pretty.
Just a reminder that another god is still out there eating popcorn or something.. probably..
This page’s art is STUNNING!
(Even more than usual)
oh lawd he goin supa saiyan

Did this boi just parry lightning
I am neither surprised or disappointed.
This page is stunning. Literally, I can’t take actions and attacks made against me automatically crit, send help.
Panel four is just, *chef’s kiss

I thought the power was in the metal itself and not Vash since he needed it to use the power

I like that Red is willing to stretch her talents, good artist! I still don’t know what’s going to happen next, good storytelling too!
I’m so impatient to find out what happened to Kendal. Is his in there? Is his soul now trapped with The Collector? I think the latter.
Sorry, Tynan, but your battle, which previously had my full attention, has been thoroughly upstaged.
OH MY GOODNESS THE LAST PANEL. YES. That’s what I’d call a BattleStar
Someone’s going supersaiyan
fwoom inbeeb
TL;DR: Anime fight right here, what with all the glowy-ness.
“I’M BIGGER AND SCARIER THIS TIME!”
“That’s cute.”
Question of the Day:
Now that Vash is (temporarily) present, what is one (non-plot-related) question you would like to ask him?
@Skye Dogs or cats?
I dunno, I have a lot of thoughts and nowhere to really put them
Wow, he’s like some kind of humanoid typhoon.
@Karishi I understand that reference!
@Skye I am having a really hard time thinking of non-plot questions… So I’m gonna go with the first non-plot thing that popped into my head, which is “Can you teach me how to sword-fight?”
@Skye What kind of woman is your type?
I have just binge-read this entire comic over the past 3 or 4 days and oh my god. This is SPECTACULAR. The character development, the glowy affects, the witty one liners, the various counts of possession, amazing!
Holy hell I love it, love it, LOVE IT.
AAAH IT’S SO COOL and it looks so good and squeeeee! *flailing*
*”I’m Blue” starts playing on full blast*
Vash!
