I’m with Falst, Zurith can deal with his own damn problems and the protagonists can go off to some other city that’s not helmed by a hypocritical egoist. Everyone (important) wins!
3. No, but really, lots of people in this city who don’t deserve Tynan. Zuurith the god can get fucked, but the people in Zuurith the city not so much.
Well, Falst, it’s cause Thunderbolt and Lightning are very, very frightning, and you lot happen to sit right under it. As the saying goes, a bullet has your name on it, a fireball is to whom it may concern and Tynan is a gigantic F*ck Everything in That General Area While Getting His Rocks Off.
Also, Merry Christmas from Germany, ya languid bastards, hope y’all have a good one.
Probobly because (A) its a god that probobly is hell bent on fiding and killing kandel, aka the avatar of the god that banished him and (B) innocent lives at risk and all of that?
Alinua: Oh, a circle like this? (Alinua’s draws a runic circle that explodes, leaving a malformed shrub in it’s place)
Erin: That was an oval! It has to be a circle!
I love how Alinua immediately goes into healing mode when she heard his cry. Erin tries his hardest to balance brooding and academical but Tess’s sibling sass is getting to him. Can’t blame Falst for thinking that but really you can’t judge this whole city on the actions of Shrike and the bad officials.
Ok, so he’s confirmed that it’s a god but I don’t see an obvious, or not dangerous, way for him to tell it’s Tynan specifically. We don’t know how widespread that tale of Vash Vs. Tynan is; none of them might know it thus not make the connection.
A few lingering points. Tess referred to Erin as “elemental mage” not magus, though that could just be an honest mistake. If storms are made of lightning, wind and water can mages of those other elements pick up on Tynan? Are the wind communication lacrimas protected with their own circles automatically or could Tynan disrupt them when he strikes?
Next weeks prediction: Erin will tell Falst exactly why they should care, maybe also pointing out how they helped Faslt in the past after he stole from them. They also speculate on why the city hasn’t picked up on the god/sounded any alarms. Maybe try and get Kendal out of prison for them to leave right now, which is when they hear about the fight.
Everyone talking about why they shouldn’t just abandon Zuurith to Tynan, but I think the best they can realistically do is warn people and bolt for the coast. Even with whatever help the protagonists could muster, I think everything Zuurith (the city) has up its sleeve will still not be nearly enough to stop Tynan.
Nobody noticing is actually kind of hilarious. After all, we know this storm specifically WANTS to be noticed. His whole point in not hitting yet is to ominously rumble until everyone notices how super scary he is. And everyone is just fully ignoring him.
@Benjamin I wouldn’t be so certain. They have Kendal and Vash’s sword which may still have some latent power and Alinua as the vessel of Life might be able to pull some tricks to mitigate the damages. But I get the impression the biggest help might come from Dainix. If some of the theories about him are true he has some immense fire powers that, if paired with a Tahraim weapon, could evaporate a lot of the storm’s water. All these combined plus assistance from Zuurith himself and they could beat Tynan.
First off, merry Christmas to all those who celebrate it! My gift from Red this year is Tess sassing Erin, which is hilarious. Also, leave it to Erin to turn getting electrocuted into a lesson on proper spell casting.
I think Falst’s comment here is a good showcase of his character, because I’m sure that the rest of the cast here will likely argue that leaving an entire city to get stormed on by an angry god is not very protagonist of them. Though I have to wonder what they think they can do, since they can’t exactly control Tynan and are liable to get beaten up by his incarnation or his lightning if they try. They could warn Zuurith himself though one of his emissaries, leaving the ball in his court, but it’s not entirely clear what he will do if he is informed. It would be a test to see how much he does actually care for his citizens, because if he did nothing it would prove what Kendal has been saying since we got here- Zuurith doesn’t care about his citizens, just about his law code. I, personally, would like to see this view subverted and see Zuurith actively go to help his people and defend them against Tynan, but we’ll have to wait and see. I’m interested to see if Tynan’s looming on the horizon will affect the upcoming Dainix v. Kendal duel, which I’m still eagerly awaiting more news on, and if this will get properly wrapped up in this chapter. I’m enjoying this storyline, of course, but at this point we’ve been in Zuurith since I started actively following this comic and I’m excited to get something new. This chapter probably won’t be done until, like, mid February, so I’ll guess I’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out. I’m sure it’ll be great though.
Erin harkening back to their argument in chapter 8, nice.
Okay, so I guess Erin having wholly dark purple eyes on the last page was just an art mistake. Nothing spooky here… yet.
So they know it’s a storm deity, and they know said deity is angry, but they don’t know who the deity is. That would explain why Falst is so nonchalant here (well, along with his obvious and justified hatred of the city’s rulers and agents), because he underestimates the kind of damage a storm can do. I won’t pretend to have survived a hurricane or tornado, but even the effects of heavy thunderstorms: gales, lightning, and especially rapid flooding, can do major damage to infrastructure (which I don’t think Falst would have experience with, having lived in the wilderness for what seems to be at least his recent memory).
Everyone else saying “Merry Christmas!” Meanwhile, I’m over here in the awkward atheist corner… From now on, I’m not celebrating Christmas. As Red recently said on Tumblr, it’s not a secular holiday. Solstice and New Year’s Eve are enough for me, thanks.
May everyone have a good year going forward and enjoy family and friends this holiday,
@ Babbling Branches and Evil Tree – I had missed Aliuna’s actions, Thank you!
Tynan is good at hiding his presence is my take. The question is what is he waiting for? as Tess asked or is that a who is he waiting to show uo? and when will he act?
@Ranting without a Cause Podcast thanks for posting the alt text! turns out I am not a Morning Person ™
@Goldfinch I would also be interested to see Zuurith defend his city from an actual threat, but even if he does, it doesn’t mean he actually cares about his citizens. For instance, he might just not want his shiny buildings to get damaged, or “order” to be disrupted by the aftermath of such a storm. Or (and this is the scenario I’m placing my bets on) he might be willing to sacrifice the *unlawful* citizens, AKA the people in prison, for the sake of the *lawful* citizens…
Do gods not count as living beings? Or if so is their life force merely on the magnitude of an ordinary creature? The storm doesn[t contain life energy but you would think that the god of the storm would
@Hermit Thrush
You make a good point. I mostly feel like Zuurith might not be as black and white bad as the characters in the comic think he is, though I don’t really know why I feel this way. People chose to live in his city, I guess, and it would certainly make him more interesting. Maybe I’m just addicted to morally gray characters and maybe I just want to see him punch a storm in the face. Actually, I just want to see someone punch a storm in the face, I don’t really care who it is.
Here’s a thought for Falst: Big Angry Storm might be over city we don’t care about but it’s not going to STAY over city we don’t care about, is it? And Falst might have reason to hope a dangerous storm dumps on all the people who have tortured him throughout his life, but still …
So, the obvious path here is that Zuurith ends up needing Kendal in order to defeat the storm god because that was Vash’s big success in the past, but I’m curious how Red will subvert that trope. IF she does. Either way, excited to see the fight with a storm god.
@Zelful As other comments have pointed out, there’re a lot of innocent people in Zuurith who are going to be in danger. Also, if they don’t stop Tynan now, he’ll just move on to other cities, having grown significantly stronger from people fearing him. @another other You make a good practical point, but you didn’t point out the moral problems with that idea. Just because someone has treated you very poorly, does not mean that you are justified in not doing anything to help when that person is in danger. Also, not everyone who has hurt Falst lives in Zuurith, and not everyone who lives in Zuurith has hurt Falst. Group homogenisation (everyone who has trait X has trait Y despite trait Y not having any logical connection with X) has done a lot of damage, ironically being the source of the racism that Falst faces, and one of the reasons that America’s political landscape is so terrible right now, although in both cases it is a symptom of a larger issue. Wow, that turned into a rant.
Okay is anyone going to talk about how Tess goes from “I’m serious. This is important.” to making fun of Erin for taking safety precautions? I love Tess. Also Erin, doesn’t get to pretend like he’s the responsible one when I’m pretty sure this is the third time he’s been electrocuted by his own magic.
You know, as much as I would definitely like to see Kendal develop some kind of Super Floof form and take out Tynan Shonen protagonist style, I do have to wonder whether a nonviolent solution may in fact be possible; not in the sense of them talking Tynan down, obviously, but in the sense of Kendal finding a way to draw upon that divine oath Vash bound Tynan to after beating him up. It would be an interesting subversion that the key to driving off this overwhelming threat lies not in Kendal becoming strong enough to take him out like Vash did, but in Kendal really settling into the role of Vash’s emissary by going all “You shall not pass” on the big angry storm god and forcing him to run.
Happy Holidays, everyone! Or Aurora Day, or whatever other holiday-season-esque things you do this time of year! And if you don’t celebrate anything in particular, or at all, I wish you good things as appropriate to your personal beliefs!
Bohandas:
Deities count as living beings as in they have structured souls; not all deities, however, have incarnations that are partially or wholly composed of organic matter, the stuff that life magic manipulates. Tynan, as Erin stated, is only made of wind, water, and lightning, not organic matter, i.e. life.

Okay. So the way Falst sees the city of Zuurith is that the rulers, agents, and supporters of the city’s integrally harmful system don’t deserve anyone’s help. But the enemies of that system (political dissidents, prisoners, and people from outside Zuurith who get enslaved simply for being from outside Zuurith (case study: Dainix)) absolutely deserve help and should flee or usurp the city as soon as possible. This is why he wanted Alinua and Erin to crack the prison open, but also (part of) why he doesn’t care about a storm god hovering over the city. Of course, his comment here is quite reductionary, as he seemingly disregards Zuurith’s enemies in this statement. Perhaps he simplified his sentence for the sake of delivering a dry quip; or his viewpoint has been warped by the fact that the only people he’s first encountered here (except maybe the junior archivist) are those aforementioned agents and supporters, so he’s internally convinced that few to none of the people here deserve to be helped… which would be an enormous yikes.
HOLD UP. Did anyone realise how the 3 elements Storms don’t have under control have already had users in some form? Life is Allinua, Stone is Shrike and Fire is (presumably) Danix.
I think people are taking falst way too seriously. Seems less like he’s making an ideological point and more being like “why do we always take the weight of the world upon our shoulders even when we’re in the worst situations”. He’s a survivor. He’s self focused. Even if what he’s saying is crude or outright morally wrong, it is absolutely logical given his experiences… par the fact that they are in the city themselves and therefore will be affected by Tynan either way lol.
But I do wonder if trying to warn people about Tynan or fix the problem will somehow make it worse, considering how Tynan works
BTW how has no one commented on how neat it is that Erin is actively trying to make it clear he *doesn’t* look down on Alinua for being a life mage, AKA he’s trying not to flaunt his status as elemental magus? because that’s some character development

I’m with falst. What the hell are consequences or ethics?
Congratulations!
That storm god IS super mad!
Here! Your prize is pain.
Plot went through the kitty door and now it’s preparing to knock all the kitchen utensils off the shelves.
Also panel five Falst and smug Tess are just the best
Also, Happy Holidays!!
I love how falst does the cat thing of become liquid when comfy
I’m with Falst, Zurith can deal with his own damn problems and the protagonists can go off to some other city that’s not helmed by a hypocritical egoist. Everyone (important) wins!
Meryy Christmas y’all!!
Falst is absolutely LOUNGING. He really nabbed the opportunity presented by magic sleepy powder
Erin’s sarcasm and Falst’s pragmatism are a great early Christmas present. Thank you and Happy Holidays!
1. Falst, no
2. Falst is a mood
3. No, but really, lots of people in this city who don’t deserve Tynan. Zuurith the god can get fucked, but the people in Zuurith the city not so much.

*Looking at Falst* No no, he’s got a point.
“Why are we worried about this again?”
Probobly because (A) its a god that probobly is hell bent on fiding and killing kandel, aka the avatar of the god that banished him and (B) innocent lives at risk and all of that?
because your in that city falst
also if kendal was here he might understand but he’s in prison, gah
“Why are we worried about this again?”
“Because if you haven’t noticed, we are still inside this city.”
It’s a nice little detail that you can tell Alinua was prepared to go into medic-mode from the glowy green magic
Not Falst posing like the Little Mermaid on a rock in that one scene. I adore him, please.
Also Merry Christmas to anyone that celebrates and Happy Aurora Day to everyone else!
Alinua: Oh, a circle like this?

Does Erin have a pair of pink and yellow glasses? XD
(I’m sorry)

Love how Erin uses it as an opportunity to lecture them on magic before expositioning
Posing gold right there indeed xD
And I absolutely love the sibling energy between tess and erin, it’s exactly what I hoped for.
Nobody noticing is actually kind of hilarious. After all, we know this storm specifically WANTS to be noticed. His whole point in not hitting yet is to ominously rumble until everyone notices how super scary he is. And everyone is just fully ignoring him.
Because the city is full of a lot of people we don’t have beef with and it could move on to cities that we do like.
Alt text: and to think some of you doubted their sibling energy
Also GODS DAMNIT FALST I JUST WANT TO BE ARO BUT YOUR MAKING IT SO FUCKING HARD
WHY

Aww, kitty boi actually looks concerned for erin in panel 1!
TL;DR: Time to worry about that angry storm over the really horrible city we happen to be in right now, what a coincidence. Definitely not plot.
May everyone have a good year going forward and enjoy family and friends this holiday,

Joyful whatever-you-personally-do-in-December everybody! Thanks for the great year of content, Red!
I give 60% odds that Falst will freak out when the angry storm follows them out of the city they hate.

help:bad
not help:bad?
This is a nice page so fa- hm… I won’t say it. I won’t say anything about panel 4. Nothing at all.
Falst: So a massive storm threatens to wipe out this craphole city? Did Winter Solstice Festival come early this year?
So to summarize Falst’s attitude “This sounds like a their-problem, not an our-problem.”
So, the obvious path here is that Zuurith ends up needing Kendal in order to defeat the storm god because that was Vash’s big success in the past, but I’m curious how Red will subvert that trope. IF she does. Either way, excited to see the fight with a storm god.

Go directly to hangover.
Do not pass tipsy,
Do not collect +1 Charm.
Why do I have a feeling Tess is partially self insert because no s l e e v e s
It’s my guess that this is Tynan back for revenge/ to do whatever he was doing before Vash drove him off. My guess is that the storm is after them, and not the city…..
Merry Christmas everybodyy
Happy Holidays everyone. 🙂
Loving the pose Falst
Erin’s magic in a nutshell (so far):
stone magic: make cool buildings and manipulate the earth/metal all around
water magic: use as distraction
life magic: healing
sky magic: send birb messages
fire magic: make LAVA, and use as torch/defense against cave crawlers
lightning magic: hmm, HOW ABOUT I ELECTROCUTE MYSELF
@fuck you id have a romantic relationship with Falst
She needs to show off “*these* *guns*”
X*these* *guns*X
I quoted it wrong, they’re her “deadly weapons”
Did I see the words “Big Shot”?
I love Falst’s pose on like the third row. He looks like he’s about to start gossiping at the slumber party.
I’ve asked this before but is there any chance Shrike can become a protagonist? I feel like there’s definitely a redemption arc about believing in the goodness of people there. Also she’s cute
falst giving off big bisexual energy with that sitting
FALST’S FACE IN PANEL ONE!!!!! AAAAAAAHHH
I love them all. Especially Falst and Alin.
