Seriously looks it. (No seriously that does look like Red though and I wouldn’t be shocked if she put herself in the town staring at a sword wearing a cape. That’s seems like a Very Red thing to do.)
Actually, you are correct! That is most definitely Red staring at a sword wearing a cape, and she would totally put herself in an establishing shot like this. Now this makes me wonder if she sticks herself in other places.
Well there’s a lot to analyze in the 5th panel! (Which looks very cool btw, great use of perspective)
For one, Alinua and Falst aren’t in this panel, which is odd since usually when Red shows an establishing shot of a new location she shows an MC or something, and seeing as they were about to leave you’d think that they’d be in the establishing shot.
I would also like to address the obvious white dragon in the window of the store ? .
From what I can see form the other windows it looks like it’s mostly for decorative purposes, since the other objects in the window are urns, goblets, and bowls, all of those could be made of clay and thus the store makes clay goods.
Aside from the clay goods shop there seems to be a weapons shop, a jewelry store, and a bookstore.
there also seems to be stalls selling Clothing, Fabric, and
What looks like more jewelry but I can’t really tell
I would also like to address the mannequin beside the stall holding up the sign, I think it looks cool.
I’d like to clap Red on the back for how good the set dressing is!
I’ve got a copy of the alphabet now and I’m gonna translate the symbols to see if I was correct about the shops
That’s a nice optimistic outlook and smile you have their Alinua. It would be a shame if something were to happen and dash that hope away.
Putting my fear for the safety of these two aside I get why they’re going out; Falst is bored, Alinua is interested in the city life and as far as either of them are aware no one is looking for them. And anyway they didn’t actually break into prison so if they got caught they could only be charged with trespassing and some property damage on their landing, assuming they don’t resist arrest or admit Falst was trying to break in. … They’re totally going to do at least one of those, aren’t they?
Is it wrong that out of the translatable runic signs, dragon statue in the window, swords, crystals, books and other things on this street my eyes gravitate to the advertising mannequin?
Yeah Tess, I know that cloud is concerning (trust me everyone here knows why) but maybe look down every now and again for guards. … Or maybe she’s looking sidelong down, it’s hard to tell with those eyes.
Unrelated to the page but I just realised who Shrike reminds me of, Zora Salazar from Epithet Erased. I like both because of the energy they give off, playfulness hiding ruthlessness and habits of inducing gay panic upon the audience. I also hate both because of their lack of morals, threat to the main characters and the distinct feeling they’ll drop all pretences of nicety to get what they want.
Falst and Alinua are gonna bump into our lightning mage buddy soon, or they’ll notice her in the chaos that’s about to go down. Either way it’s gonna be exciting
I’m trying to get a look at Tess’s arm. The mark there isn’t very clear, but I’m trying to compare it to the Elemental sigil that Erin found in the storm. Tess’s mark seems too different, so I don’t think that they are the carrier for the lightning primordial like I thought they were. That makes wonder if all lightning mages can move around like they do.
The sword in the marketplace reminds me of the burly warrior from the mountain village in The Dragon Prince: “This isn’t even my biggest sword!” Seriously though, this sword had better have a thin blade or it would be too heavy to wield, because that blade is really wide.
I have a feeling Falst and Alinua are going to be captured by Shrike and her entourage while they’re galavanting around an actively hostile city… I know Alinua wants to see a city, but there are better places to do that! Argist or Hollowsong, perhaps, but not here! Falst I expect is going with her to protect her, but that does place them more at risk; Vienne’s “I won’t have you clapping irons on the first ferin you see” comment when she and Shrike probably don’t even know if the second person they’re looking for is even a ferin or not gives me the feeling that, on top of supporting and actively benefiting from a corrupt system, Shrike is also racist.
Dark Wolf:
Her skin is either bronze or gold; it looks like gold, but I think Red once said on Tumblr that it’s bronze. Either way, she doesn’t have to worry about rust, but if it is bronze, she might have to worry about patina. (Apologies if I overanalyzed a joke.)
TL;DR: Time for some sightseeing! What wonders does this new world hold for these two societal outcasts who have never really explored civilization? Wonder what lightning lady is looking at, hmm.
Also, Alinua and Falst are my mum and me on vacation. Ugh, the cities. How could she possibly WANT to see them???
What aspect of city life is Alinua missing? What sights and sounds does she hope to experience? Is Falst and Alinua traveling together a terrible idea that will most certainly draw Shrike’s attention? Will Tess find someone who will listen to her? Did Falst only come with because Erin’s bag doesn’t have Temptations cat treats?
I interpreted the dragon in the window as a sales-dragon or a guard-dragon instead of something else for sale. The passerby is paying attention to it because it is talking to them.
The large! glass windows and the clothing seller outside attest to the security and the cleanliness of the city.
What a fantastic transition page. Always love seeing markets, and random extras, it always gives a sense of depth to a world, from the clothing people wear to the types of shops that are around. Just love that stuff.
To TheUnknownGame – You might be surprised how wieldy a wide sword can be, the Oakshott Type XV comes to mind(The Albion Principe is one if you want an expensive replica). They’re exceptionally wide at the base but still nimble thanks to both the standard taper and the distal taper of the blade which keeps the point of balance back towards the hands. Not only are there historical examples but they are usually the preferred blade type for cutting competitions in modern HEMA. That sword certainly looks like it would be primarily for cutting, since the tip is shaped only at the end and not particularly pointed. I imagine it would be intended for monster hunting more than fighting armed/armoured people because of that.
To Steve, Lord of Darkness: Actually I have lived on cities before, that’s why I hate them. I know what they are like and am very glad to not be in a big one now. Still living with my neighbors in sight though, could use improvements. I dislike the noise, air pollution, and bad neighbors.
Now, this is probably just a coincidence, but the person in the bottom right corner to the left of the blue tent bears a non-zero visual similarity to the Collector. Really I wouldn’t even point it out were it not for the fact that I don’t think any of the recurring characters are in that panel.
Don’t worry about the double-post, we all know technology can be weird sometimes (my tablet likes to skip pages every time I try to scroll here. Sigh.). Honestly, I just got lucky with being able to post as soon as I did today; my morning class got cancelled–the professor had an event to attend.
Anyone notice below Reds art is improving ? If you go back to an old page with a drawing alinua and compare it to this one, you’ll notice the improvement
I don’t mind cities for the most part, though I don’t have much interest in settling down in one. I’m actually going to move into a place in the city for school tomorrow. Though, it’s a rather small city that doesn’t visibly have many of the problems rampant in larger ones. Big cities are always nice places to visit, but I wouldn’t want to stay for to long. I feel sorry for people that live their lives without a clear view of the stars.
Somebody and Steve:
I live in a small city myself, about 30,000 population-wise. Since we’re so far from any other similarly sized settlements, I actually enjoy visiting larger cities – but I definitely wouldn’t want to live in one. Too noisy and too expensive.
keen12a:
Ah, you’re reminding me of when I watched Skallagrim on YouTube. I vaguely remember his video on the Principe, it was quite formidable. I made my comment because this blade looks to be even wider than that one, at least at the base, which without the tapers would make it very heavy. However, in addition to the standard taper (and assumed distal taper), the blade does look to be quite short for a longsword as well, which would definitely help keep the weight down. In fact, it looks more like a shiny, hand-and-a-half version of a Principe-like design, instead of a longsword. That window shopper had better be rich if they want something that flashy…
To Steve: I don’t think you have to feel bad for every city dweller, I knew one who for some reason loved big cities and hated rural areas. Always confused me but I guess to each their own.
It probably has to do a lot with where you grew up. I spent my childhood in a fairly rural area, and while I’m living in a larger city now, I’m still kind of on the outskirts of it. Given time I might be able to adapt if I had to move into a more urban part of it, but I don’t think I could move to the big city. I need to be able to get outside and interact with nature–living in an area with a dizzying amount of people, buildings, and traffic in a relatively condensed space (and having to interact with it all on a daily basis) would be too much.
Makes sense. I also love to have nature around me, I even tend to collect it indoors in the form of houseplants. I like to get out and observe plants and animals, for that a city park won’t do. Hopefully one day I can get a job dealing with nature, for now I have to be content with taking biology class.
I’m not sure I could adapt to a bigger city, the barely functioning sociopath side of me can only think of and get mad at overpopulation. Also I have a rather sensitive sense of hearing and smell, the traffic would probably keep me up all night…
As far as being adaptable goes, I am quite a failure but whatever
We all have our strengths and weaknesses, and some people adapt better than others. Honestly, I’m a bit of a homebody and don’t necessarily take well to change… It’s something I’m working on, though.
I like to engage in a bit of plant collecting, too–I have a bad habit of collecting seeds from exotic fruit and trying to get them to grow (I have, at the moment and among other things, a seedling mango and sapote, a handful of dragonfruit, and a lemon I was gifted and have somehow managed to keep alive the past several years, plus I’m taking another crack at starfruit). I’ve also taken to raising monarchs and enjoy checking up on the various large bugs running around (which include, at the moment, two barn spiders and a tobacco hornworm)…. I’ve been repeatedly told I need to drop my current degree for one in entomology, though considering I’m still trying to work out (and have been for a while) if I should swap to meteorology…
The traffic is a major point for me, too. I am not someone who likes to drive, even in relatively light traffic…There’s almost too much to keep track of, and given that a lot of drivers aren’t paying attention–found this one out the hard way last year–it’s hard for me to feel completely comfortable behind the wheel. Plus any road with more than three lanes scares me, as do that have only three.
I too gather supermarket fruit seeds. Had trouble with pomegranate, they kept getting stuck. Have had a mango, some oranges, a loquat, several red and yellow dragon fruits, and a grapefruit for years now. Lost my starfruit to dumb overwatering.
Generally I’m not good with trees, most of my plants are cacti, orchids, and carnivorous plants. Small, shrubby stuff. Small, shrubby stuff I freeze my butt off for because some of them like nighttime temperatures in the 50-60 Fahrenheit range, so it has to be the air conditioning in the bedroom (I have no professional supplies). I think at this point I’m a lunatic.
For some reason, I don’t have my driver’s license yet. Haven’t even gone to driving school. It’s “too dangerous”. I mean, it is a bit scary with all the crazy city drivers I’ll probably have to contend with but it would make meeting with my plant club easier. So much easier.
I don’t think I’ve ever had that issue with pomegranate–the one I have is getting them enough light, since I don’t think they’re supposed to be a bit more shrubby than mine turn out (that, and my cat likes to chew them…). It’s a bit hard in the winter even with the grow light, since they’re cold-sensitive. (The window the light is by leaks slightly). Generally, over- or under-watering is what tends to get some of mine–underwatering for the obvious reasons (I’m having to baby a cherimoya seedling after forgetting to check it), while overwatering tends to invite fungus gnats, which then accounts for about half my seedling mortality rate.
I think most of us have some trait that others might consider a sign of being a lunatic, though the plant thing is admittedly one that we share. I honestly blame my father for that–he’s the one who got me into trying my hand at strange plants (his botanical menagerie includes a couple avocado, pomegranate, yellow kiwi, a sapote, more dragonfruit than is probably healthy, at least one attempt at jackfruit, and a few other assorted seeds. And last I knew, he was hoping to get his hands on a durian at some point… (and the less said about our combined attempts at pineapple and coconut, the better)
I will admit, it does make the day to day easier. Even though I was super hesitant to take Driver’s Ed and it took me a couple attempts to get my license, the ability to where I wanted when I wanted was helpful. My car got totaled last year, and the hardest part (other than having to overcome the PTSD from getting unexpectedly rammed from behind by someone doing 50mph while waiting to make a left turn) was having to go back to relying on family members to take me places while I was in the process of finding a new car.
*lives in new york city*
I’m torn between being offended and doing the “I agree” sign so hard that my fingers fall off.
The city is a wonderful place, but like, it also genuinely sucks, and trust me, nobody knows that more than the people who live there. It still puzzles me why anyone would want to buy an apartment for like half a kajillion dollars in the middle of what is essentially a trash dump trying to look important.
Even so, some places in the city can be really amazing, and you might stumble across something you didn’t know you needed in your life until you saw it. Some people are admittedly crappy, but others are really nice, and there’s so many different people you never know what’s going to happen (Hopefully that’s not a bad thing!). Also, there are always some crazy weird awesome community events going on, so it’s never that hard to meet amazing or like-minded people.
All in all, it’s understandable if you hate cities, but try to give them at least a chance before totally dismissing them.
Unless they’re Times Square, in which case, pardon my language, f*ck that sh*t get me out of here. IT’S SO BRIGHT AND LOUD AND THERE’S NOWHERE GOOD TO EAT AND EVERYONE’S TAKING PHOTOS AND YOU CAN’T MOVE YOUR ARMS WITHOUT HITTING SOMEONE AND AAAAAAAAAAAARGHHHH! Sorry. Sorry. That’s just another reason why I feel like people hate cities, because terrifying places like Times Square are advertised as the whole thing. I don’t REALLY know about many other cities, but I’m sure there are similar tourist traps that annoy the crud out of a lot of the locals too.
Dude same. I visited New York for a school thing and my hotel was literally- like I could OPEN the WINDOW and LOOK DOWN on TIMES SQUARE. I got no decent sleep during that vacation. But as someone from the suburbs, big bustling cities are a little overwhelming, but honestly pretty cool. Times Square is an overrated tourist trap tho. The only good thing abt it is the Stardust diner on a corner. So cool to see the servers singing to you while you eat. This concludes Scar’s rant about her trip to New York.
Don’t know who I relate more to; The person staring at the sword, or the person staring at the dragon statue
The person walking next to the book shop
All of the above
TVTropes tells me that the woman looking at the sword is actually the author.
Sure, I’ll believe that.
Hey hey Tess is back :3
Also that street scene is nice. Look a the lil’ details in the windows X3
I love how the light reflects off Tess’s skin, but also, does she sleep? And where? I hope it’s a comfortable rooftop at least
Ah, window shopping
at a lively marketplace.
Ooh, metal lady!

I’ve got a copy of the alphabet now and I’m gonna translate the symbols to see if I was correct about the shops
I was correct, the first shop reads “Potery and Glas” and the other one reads “Books”. I find it funny how Books is spelled correctly.
Also, I apologize for how long my last comment is
Perhaps the script is phonetic instead of a cipher?
That’s a nice optimistic outlook and smile you have their Alinua. It would be a shame if something were to happen and dash that hope away.

How do you work out the translation of the runes? Could you share the copy of the alphabet you mentioned?
That was meant to be a reply to Indigo Toxin
They’ll bump into Tess sooner or later
Well, this looks interesting
Falst and Alinua are gonna bump into our lightning mage buddy soon, or they’ll notice her in the chaos that’s about to go down. Either way it’s gonna be exciting
Tess: Hmm… looks like it’s going to rain. I better remember to buy some oil…
To Goshawkpatronus: you can read about the runes here: https://aurorawebcomic.fandom.com/wiki/Auroran_runic_alphabet

Tune in This Week to Find Out!
And look, not *that* late today! Woohoo!
Look at that, TL;DR and cliffhanger together at around the same time. And is Somebody from somewhere rural like me? Neat.

I’m also like two years late but who cares!!
