Maaaan Zuurith is re-enforcing Kendal’s idea that Kendal is only Vash’s weapon to use instead of his own person, while at the same time letting him know that others feel the same way
1. Zuurith’s clear fear response in addressing someone he does not understand
2. the clear existential and philosophical problems literally all the gods face at Kendal’s mere existence
3. Clear allegories for real world human responses to *ahem* “people we do not entirely understand”
4. Every parallel to real world oppressive legal logic that treat people unfairly regardless of whether or not they have actually done anything wrong,
5. the use of preventative measures to “ensure” that a potential threat cannot arise, demonstrating a very big lack of trust (also how much this doesn’t work, just ask any ruler/god who was doomed to fall at the hands of their offspring in mythology)
6. Vash appears pretty dangerous by God standards holding clear literary parallels and opposition in values to Zuurith
7. (and please don’t flame me for this one) Zuurith isn’t actually wrong in that last panel
Also I agree with you, Zuurith isn’t wrong in the last panel. Actually, I don’t think he’s wrong at all. The only thing wrong with him is the fact that he isn’t letting Kendal go, but otherwise I think he’s being cautious, in a mean, harsh way nonetheless.
For the most part, he may not be wrong in the last panel, but he did also deny Kendal’s personhood to his face.
I definitely agree with your other points, though, especially 5; using preventative measures to try to stop a perceived threat just creates a threat who is now vindictive in bringing down the subjects who tried to suppress them. Just look at every prophecy narrative in Indo-European mythologies for examples of this on a personal scale, and real world nations censoring information about marginalized demographics for examples of this on a societal scale.
I mean, so far, Zuurith has been correct on almost every beat, but in the most dickheaded ways possible. The preventative methods are famously a recipe for self-destruction though.
Zurrith is right, but he could’ve (assuming he’s not a living embodiment of lawful neutrality) been nicer about it and noted that Kendal has been hanging out in a hotel room doing nothing since he got here. House arrest makes more sense than confinement to the peak for no reason, especially since existential threat or not he is the only hope against the god-taker at this point.
That is to assume that she will be caught. If it were just getting charged and chased after Kendal my bets would be on PML, but to be arrested and incrassated I would have to say Erin. I’m sorry Erin but PML fought a dragon by herself and DIDN’T end up entangled in a primordial deities plan of escape by becoming his avatar.
Funny that Mr. law-and-order complains of Kendall’s transgression, only to turn around and offhandedly mention interfering with mortals under the same level of authority of another god as little “e” emissaries. And for a (as far as Erin or Asera is officially concerned) tangential issue no less. Dick indeed.
If Kendal goes along with this, he should request to at least send a message to his companions explaining the situation so they don’t panic and do something rash. They could still do something illegal and chaotic in response, but not rash.
Zuurith genuinely believes that Vash is not coming back. Because otherwise treating someone with such a close connection to Vash like this would be suicidal.
Hard cut to Vash, chilling in Stone’s third heart, seething with rage: “As soon as I get out of here, I’m pushing ‘kick Zuurith’s ass’ to the top of my itinerary.”
You’re right that the cape and helmet contribute to the magneto vibe, but I think you should discount the looming (or in magneto’s case, float looming) and tons of purple.
Zuurith: Vash was always chaotic and unpredictable therefore I will put you in jail I’m sure this will solve everything
*sometime later*
Kendal: JAILBREAK!
Tess: Same my dude
Zuurith: Why and how did you get here?
Tess: The same was that he did and the same way we’re leaving the door
Zuurith: *gasp* DISRESPECT
Oh, and though you may have been sitting in a couch this whole time your very existence is a crime against godkind and I have prejudices against creations from my nemesis. Good grounds for arrest.
And there it is ladies and gentlemen! Kendal is the first one to be arrested! His crime: existing, basically!
Zuurith asking Kendal to leave the embassy to have a word with him only to turn around an arrest him. Man that is a dick move. I wonder what would have happened if Kendal refused and stayed in the embassy. If Zuurith were a proper god of law I’d say he wouldn’t be able to do much as assaulting another gods embassy would be a big no-no. But in panel 4 he described not involving Erin and the others as a “courtesy”, gives me the impression he wouldn’t be above doing so.
Despite all that Big Z does make some valid points in the final panel, up until now all the gods we’ve come across have been on good terms with Vash and thus Kendal so likely looked over the oddity of his existence. The further the gang travels the less familiar and friendly the gods may get to Kendal and the more cautious he needs to be.
Some gods may even try and replicate the process that made Kendal, thinking it could give them an army of self-automated and self-thinking soldiers.
You think I’m an ignorant savage
And you’ve been so many places
I guess it must be so
But still I cannot see
If the savage one is me
How can there be so much that you don’t know
You don’t know
You think you own whatever land you land on
The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim
But I know every rock and tree and creature
Has a life, has a spirit, has a name
-I won’t finish the song here, but wow does it fit. Colors of the Wind from Pocahontas.
I dunno if he’s making this an actual arrest, more a “You’ll wait quietly in this room until you’re ready to leave. Because I know you’re a protagonist, and will cause trouble if left to your own devices.”
Or maybe an arrest with just a very short imprisonment.
“Vash loved mortals for their chaotic individuality. Zuurith seems to hate them for the same reason.”
Vash and Zuurith led opposing ideologies on how to run their societies. Vash was very inclusive, letting even marginalized and criminalized demographics into his city as equals. Zuurith, on the other hand, demonstrably sees any deviation from his social norm as a threat. Vash thinks Zuurith is a bigoted asshole, Zuurith thinks Vash is trying to force his own worldview on everyone else.
I did get that they don’t like each other, but Zuurith said Vash “opposed us”, implying all the gods. And I know you also said you have no clue for the other gods, I just wanted to give my question a bit more context
I think it’s mostly referring to Vash’s tendancy to meddle a bit, taking in godless even though it is generally agreed that if someone is godless they are banished forever because punishment, things like that. Basically, he’s a protagonist god, and any protagonist will offend a not insignificant portion of the background charachters. On a mortal scale, this is things like the pissed off farmer after a monster chases you through their field, but it’s probably other stuff on a divine scale.
Zuurith: You will sit and wait quietly in the corner until your punk friends come back from their trip. Did I make myself clear?!
Kendal: Well, somebody is cranky! Do you need a nap? Or a hug?
Zuurith: Cor-
Ner
Time! Now!
Kendal: Ok, you don’t need to be so pushy.
“Counterproposition – I just hang around outside your city and fight off monsters. You get some upgraded defense, I get freedom and training, it’s a win-win.”
To all the people who defended Zuurith: he just straight-up arrested Kendal for existing, and for being affiliated with Vash; and on top of that, he threatened to arrest Kendal’s friends for being affiliated with him. And Kendal was just keeping to himself, minding his own business in the embassy!
While I don’t LIKE Zuurith, I will certainly defend him. Kendal is a rouge agent of a known enemy. Think 1950s Nazi refugee. He may be perfectly innocent and only associated with your enemy by poor circumstance, but will you really trust him? And what about his friends? House arrest, or maybe a bit more secure than that, waiting on details, is a pretty measured response until he is ready to move on.
I get what you’re saying, but your analogy kind of implies that Kendal and, by extension, Vash are fascists; I know that’s probably not the connotation you meant to convey with that statement, but the connotation is there nonetheless.
We don’t know how much the conflict between Vash and Zuurith escalated; if a whole-ass war had been fought between them, then short-term house arrest might make sense for Kendal, seeing as how he’s basically a high-level diplomat. But:
1) Kendal had already put himself in voluntary house arrest prior to his meeting with Zuurith, making this kind of redundant.
2) The peak that Zuurith mentions here is most likely the enormous fuck-you prison looming over his city, and I kinda doubt that a prison would have a penthouse suite, meaning that this is less house arrest and more garden variety arrest.
3) If the Vash-Zuurith animosity never boiled over into armed conflict, then Zuurith arresting Kendal looks much worse, as Zuurith is basically jailing a political dissident.
I understand that this is a spicy discussion, and one that I have a heavy bias in, but I don’t intend to get in a heated argument/screaming match. Thank you for keeping things civil, and I’m sorry if I come off as overly confrontational.
You have been very civil. I apologize for the connection to fascism, rather I meant to bring to mind the multinational hate and fear for those who found themselves a part of the regime, and tried to leave. We are always stuck with our own biases until we have the viewpoint of others, and I thank you for yours.
Zuurith is just feeling threatened because somebody might have better hair than him. The only way he knows how to deal with this is to throw the threat in prison.
Wait, I remember from the Damsels in Distress video that Red has a particular fondness for this trope and rescue plans. I wonder if this is going where I think it’s going. (Actually, this whole story is about un-damseling Vash, now that I think about it.)
He wasn’t even wearing it in the hotel room when Pryder came knocking; Kendal actively grabbed his sword before going to meet Zuurith. Guess it goes to show just how much he doesn’t trust the guy.
…Fuck, I really hope Zuurith doesn’t try to order a hit on Kendal…
Zuurith is definitely one of those people who believes in collective punishment. The only question is, how far does he extend his punishments? Close family and friends, all three generations of a family or just everyone within the vicinity of a criminal?
Zuurith: a dick, but maybe not QUITE as much of a dick as expected? Depending on whether the Peak quarters he has in mind are more like “diplomatic rooms with a guard on the door” or “JAIL”.
So… Kendal had already said he’d stay in his room to stay out of trouble… but Zuurith is like. “Not good enough. Must be in prison to make sure he doesn’t cause trouble cause I don’t like Vash and your existence makes me uncomfortable.”
Well, here’s the question really. Vash the city is destroyed, the crater Vash the city was in is gone, and all the people who lived there are dead. We know that gods in this setting are intimately connected to their domains, so… If Vash has nothing to be the God of…
What’s going to happen to him if they pull him out of the Collectors containment vessel?
I have a theory. Gods keep existing so long as they are remembered by enough people, so it will take a long time for Vash to fade completely. I can think of two things that might happen to him.
1: he goes back to his crate-I mean mound of stone, invites people from the nearby towns to come rebuild the city, and goes back to his “I wolcoem the disenfranchised and godless” routine untill he has a proper city again after a couple hundred years.
2: everyone who is still alive to remember him remembers him as the hero god who stopped Tynan, not the ruler of their city. Therefore, he becomes a conceptual god of heroism, which would actually let him grow in power, and also give him more ability to mess with Zuurith, because his domain would become that of all dienfranchised poeple of the world, and guess where a lot of disenfranchised people live? He would basically become a god of heroes and revolutionaries, and go around, popping in and saving people, and the various city gods couldn’t say anything because he’s a conceptual god now, and the world is his domain.
I don’t know which option would be more likely, or which one I’d prefer, but either seems possible with how Red has described divinity in her world.
Although, I am now hoving the creepy mental image of a conceptual god Vash popping into a place where heroing needs doing, incarnating, and then just leaving extea Kendal’s behind everywhere to protagonist for him. I don’t know if I love or hate this idea. The wierdest bit is that, after whatever conflict was dealt with, there would just be an extra unemployed Kendal. And now I’m imagining a Kendals only mercenary lodge, where all the unemployed Kendals go to wait for existential threats. i both love and hate this image.
Problem: Gods change depending on how people remember them. As it is, everyone is going to remember Vash as ‘The God Who Died’ which… isn’t the same as being forgotten, but could be much worse. Judging by what happened to his city, I’d expect Vash to become a God of Death or Disaster, rather than one of Heroism. And this assumes he can survive at all, post-spiritual-vivisection.
So it will be Kendal who meats Caliban’s champion afterall.
I guess Kendal and the gang won’t be steaked here for long then.
Terrible pun I know but I saw my opportunity and took it
things ought to be getting real heated soon (。_。)
I bet he’ll give the champion a warm welcome
[Intelligent fire-based pun here]
The fifth panel is incredible
I think its the combination of the cape, helmet, floating and excessive amounts of Purple.
Whoops wrong reply
so does that mean it will be Kendal who meets Crucible?
also i have underestimated his dickheadedness, but he makes a pretty good point.
Maaaan Zuurith is re-enforcing Kendal’s idea that Kendal is only Vash’s weapon to use instead of his own person, while at the same time letting him know that others feel the same way
MAN
What a downer. Now Kendal will have ANOTHER existential crisis.
Okay, now he’s being a real asshole.
JESUS CHRIST MY ANALYSIS BONES ARE TINGLING!!!!
Impressive
Also I agree with you, Zuurith isn’t wrong in the last panel. Actually, I don’t think he’s wrong at all. The only thing wrong with him is the fact that he isn’t letting Kendal go, but otherwise I think he’s being cautious, in a mean, harsh way nonetheless.

Him being right doesn’t mean he isn’t a bitch
So Kendal is the first to be arrasted. Place your bets on who’s next.
“You’re under arrest!”
“What? Why?!”
“…. hold on while I think of a good excuse…”
*5 hours later*
“Me No Like! That’s why!”
“Sir, you’re going to jail!”
“What? Why!?”
“For breaking the laws of physics.”
I predict Erin.
Yeah, definitely Erin
All my bets are in PML now. They see her, she sees them, she falls off roof. She’s going to get caught.
That is to assume that she will be caught. If it were just getting charged and chased after Kendal my bets would be on PML, but to be arrested and incrassated I would have to say Erin. I’m sorry Erin but PML fought a dragon by herself and DIDN’T end up entangled in a primordial deities plan of escape by becoming his avatar.
incarcerated*** lol

You are only ever what you were in the past. No evolution or growth or change allowed. Am god of rules, hurr hurr.
Definitely not god of sense and reason. Zuurith, you said yourself Vash was an agent of chaos, how is Kendal’s existence surprising whatsoever???
And then Erin will give the main reason why they are here.
Transgressed? As soon as Kendal got here he sat his butt down in the room and was minding his own business, Zuurith. Insecure much?
If Kendal goes along with this, he should request to at least send a message to his companions explaining the situation so they don’t panic and do something rash. They could still do something illegal and chaotic in response, but not rash.

Hard cut to Vash, chilling in Stone’s third heart, seething with rage: “As soon as I get out of here, I’m pushing ‘kick Zuurith’s ass’ to the top of my itinerary.”
Bold of you to assume that “kick Zuurith’s ass” wasn’t already at the top of his itinerary.
Bold of you to assume it’s not the only thing on his itinerary besides the Collector.
Bold of you to assume that Vash, an agent of chaos, would answer to anyone, even his own itinerary.
*sings* I made an itinerary for every adversary, drawn from the quests of heroes past…
You’re right that the cape and helmet contribute to the magneto vibe, but I think you should discount the looming (or in magneto’s case, float looming) and tons of purple.
Zuurith: Vash was always chaotic and unpredictable therefore I will put you in jail I’m sure this will solve everything

Zuurith: Why and how did you get here?
Tess: The same was that he did and the same way we’re leaving the door

TL;DR: I’m a control freak! – angry purple jerk
Oh, and though you may have been sitting in a couch this whole time your very existence is a crime against godkind and I have prejudices against creations from my nemesis. Good grounds for arrest.
Alternatively, Zuurith: “Know your place, TRASH”
Us: “Everything you just said has made me VERY ANGRY”
Man, how big must his trash can be?
Um, have you SEEN that mountain?
Good point. Guy must be a clean freak.
oh gosh. its thanos.
*snap*
And there it is ladies and gentlemen! Kendal is the first one to be arrested! His crime: existing, basically!

Wow, dick. He just called Kendal’s existance a crime against nature.
I dunno if he’s making this an actual arrest, more a “You’ll wait quietly in this room until you’re ready to leave. Because I know you’re a protagonist, and will cause trouble if left to your own devices.”
Or maybe an arrest with just a very short imprisonment.
Oh, when did Vash oppose the other gods? I know he fought Tynan, but did I miss an extra bit of lore somewhere?
“Vash loved mortals for their chaotic individuality. Zuurith seems to hate them for the same reason.”
Vash and Zuurith led opposing ideologies on how to run their societies. Vash was very inclusive, letting even marginalized and criminalized demographics into his city as equals. I did get that they don’t like each other, but Zuurith said Vash “opposed us”, implying all the gods. And I know you also said you have no clue for the other gods, I just wanted to give my question a bit more context
Ah, okay. Thanks for clarifying.

Kendal: Ok, you don’t need to be so pushy.
Jailbreak?
The equivalent of that one frienemy your mom has trying to ground you when your at her house
Zuurith: *bonk* go to crime against nature jail
also who is this champion everyone is talking about, I am supremely confused
He was mentioned by Caliban and Tahraim on Page 10. Their conversation starts on Page 8 after Tahraim finishes telling the story of Vash’s sword.

*raises hand* I’ll vouch for Kendal.
Zuurith is just feeling threatened because somebody might have better hair than him. The only way he knows how to deal with this is to throw the threat in prison.
The real reason Zuurith waited for Kendal to arrive before incarnating was so he could be sure of have the biggest floof.
Zuurith is the classic Evil Queen who can’t handle the protagonist being prettier than him.
Another point for Disney Princess Kendal /j
Ah, the endless L’Oreal vs Schauma war. This pointless suffering must stop!
When will they realize that they are all one, they are all hairy and fluffy!
Wait, I remember from the Damsels in Distress video that Red has a particular fondness for this trope and rescue plans. I wonder if this is going where I think it’s going. (Actually, this whole story is about un-damseling Vash, now that I think about it.)
I just remembered:
Alinua: “Hey. Next time we talk to a government official-”
Kendal: “I’ll leave the sword.”
…he didn’t leave the sword…
He wasn’t even wearing it in the hotel room when Pryder came knocking; Kendal actively grabbed his sword before going to meet Zuurith. Guess it goes to show just how much he doesn’t trust the guy.
…Fuck, I really hope Zuurith doesn’t try to order a hit on Kendal…
Why kill someone when you can just send them to your GIANT MOUNTAIN PRISON.
It seems like more of a power flex that way.
Zuurith is definitely one of those people who believes in collective punishment. The only question is, how far does he extend his punishments? Close family and friends, all three generations of a family or just everyone within the vicinity of a criminal?
*flashbacks to last friday’s Trope Talk*
Zuurith: a dick, but maybe not QUITE as much of a dick as expected? Depending on whether the Peak quarters he has in mind are more like “diplomatic rooms with a guard on the door” or “JAIL”.
…Still a dick, though.
Dude puts the dick in dictator
I think ‘The Peak’ is the huge mountain prison. So, yeah. More like a holding cell than living quarters.
So… Kendal had already said he’d stay in his room to stay out of trouble… but Zuurith is like. “Not good enough. Must be in prison to make sure he doesn’t cause trouble cause I don’t like Vash and your existence makes me uncomfortable.”
….Good choice Zuurith.

Wow this asshole sucks
That is a really good question!
Zuurith the guy who cares about law and order so much, threatened to mess with Erin and co because they’re associated with Kendal.
I think it’s funny that we all thought Kendal would do something stupid, but it turns out that he got arrested for existing.
He did do something stupid. He entered Zuurith.
He looks sick tho…
sorry I am a dumbass but what is a sef??? I am legit confused
You might already know this, but a sef is a Week in Aurora
It’s seven days long and it’s the shorter of the two moon cycles.
A sef is the shorter of the two Auroran month cycles. Basically a week.
Alt text: trying to figure out why he gives me magneto vibes. might be the cape. or the hat thingy. or both
