Also, I love it when stories actually acknowledge just how difficult and kind of unpleasant sleeping can be. Sleep can lead to some AWESOME plot threads, as Red is so kindly demonstrating.
Panel 5 is the best. That is the perfect ‘puzzled bow’ I must try to replicate in as many situations as possible.
Erin is gonna write “A Comprehensive Theory of Naps, Slumber and Sleep” to vent his frustration after this.

Oh if only it were that simple Kendal. Considering how much of a worrier he is he could struggle to get to sleep due to overthinking.

Yeah, I kinda feel like what this story really needs at this point is for the whole floof squad to share a good belly laugh. At this point, we don’t know if any of them (except Falst) even has a sense of humor.
Clearly Vash has never had the need or opportunity for a good nap. He doesn’t know what he’s missing out on.

I love how Erin was trying to approach the whole thing with a somewhat professional tone and scientific perspective and then immediately lost his mind when the process didn’t go as planned
What made me laugh was how Erin was leaning over expectantly and then Kendal (holding his blond hair out of the way, mind you) said “I don’t think it’s working” ?
I mean, Erin probably doesn’t have much practice teaching newborn godlings how to sleep.
As someone who doesn’t go to sleep quickly I relate to to Kendal more than I would like
Yeah, getting to sleep takes time. I usually just eschew the formal attempt to try going to sleep and think about other stuff until it happens.

But really, I agree. I spend a lot of time just rolling in bed trying to sleep. It doesn’t work too well.
Last March, I made the decision to stop sitting in bed all night not sleeping and actually do things instead, like write or watch the entirety of Batman Beyond for the first time. Sleep time comes when I’m actually tired, and not a second earlier.
Now, my sleep schedule is all over the place, and my family keeps voicing concerns about my odd waking hours, but the last 9 months have been some of my most rested in over a decade 🙂
If I may gush about scene writing for a moment…

I love how Erin is such a busy-body he has to teach Kendal the correct way to sleep.
Meanwhile, Falst is over here in on a tree branch who has probably never slept on anything softer than the forest floor in years. I suspect Falst is the sort to fall asleep standing up if given enough quiet

Why do I get the feeling that Erin may be quoting a speech he heard over a thousand times as a young student staying up way too late practicing all the different ways he could manipulate the fabric of reality?
ok, you have found a valid explanation as to why the scholar know about sleep. He was clearly forced to study it after crashing and sleeping through an exam.
When my seasonal affective disorder decided to hit me with insomnia last summer… I related to Kendal AND Erin simultaneously without realizing it.
Erin and Kendal are literally the last two brain cells of every insomniac on the planet.

He’s only been with the group for 4 pages, but I can already tell Falst is going to provide some much needed dry wit, common sense, and sense of self-preservation.
Ignore me, I’m just overthinking why Erin has purple bedding despite purple being an extremely expensive color to make before the invention of aniline dyes. Is he just that rich? Is the level of technology on Aurora higher than it appears to be? Are there natural sources for bright shades of purple other than hundreds of snail corpses? Do aniline dyes exist but only because of a fluke and they don’t actually accurately represent the level of technology? Does magic play a role? Or did Red just choose to make it purple because purple is a pretty color?
You’re telling me that Erin, in his quest to buy the Most Comfortable Bedding, would not also buy the Most Expensive Bedding?
From what I’ve seen on Red’s comic tumblr account, my guess is either: there’s a natural substance on this planet besides a boatfull of snail corpses that can make purple dye, or: shut up, it’s purple because she said it’s purple.
Let’s be honest here, between Alinua and that bedding, the bedding is not the least unrealistically purple thing in this comic.
I think that in a fantasy world setting with elemental magic we could expect society and technology to leap forwards in some aspects when compared to our medieval times since many operations that required complex machinery to be invented can be achieved just by staring intently to the object.
Or they live on a world with a weird sort of light spectrum due to a weird sun, and so some plants on some part if the world all turned purple because that was the most efficient colour to soak up the sunlight.
TL;DR: The scholar loses his cool over sword guy’s inability to understand something as simple as a good nap.
