“You fool! You fell for one of the classic blunders! The most famous of which: never separate a scholar from their book bag. But only slightly less well-known is this: NEVER TRUST A PAIR OF GLASSES UNLESS YOU SEE THE PRESCRIPTION FIRST! HAHAHA! HAHAHAHA!”
Nooooooo Doctor Jolon was so dorky I don’t want him to be a bad guy!
Falst’s “are we fighting again” is so sweet. Also, that second-to-last panel all but confirms my beliefs that Falst will join the team. You can’t have four people look THAT right together and NOT have them be a team together.
Oof, haven’t watched that show in over three years. Seasons one and two were pretty good… and then it was all downhill from there. I never even bothered watching season eight.
Yep, same. I only recently discovered it and quite enjoyed it at first, but I was so jaded by season seven I couldn’t finish the season finale. I didn’t even try watching s8. Still, it had real potential and early on it was good.
But this isn’t the place to commiserate about VLD.
Anyway, yep, Dr. Jolon created the chimeras and that’s quiznack-worthy. It’s too bad, he was dorkily lovable. (Granted I’m basing that off of the fact that he fell on his face once, and nothing else, but still. Oh, and his character design was pretty adorkable. Although not now that the glasses are gone!)
“That darn ferrin, spreading its propaganda. It’ll have you think I’m the one a fault here; that it actually has emotions and reasoning. Preposterous!”
just to clear up i don’t hate jolon, just thought it would be funny for him to say that)
I just reread the last couple of chapters at this revelation and the signs were always there.
Why would a “proper mage” go to such a small village. Because he could create chimeras in peace. How did jolan know they were attacked by a beast? Because he made the creature do it. Why did he react so mysteriously when they brought up the chimeras, flashing his glasses and everything? Because he made them. Everything makes sense now.
The funny thing is that Jolon probably thinks that Erin is the team power house which means he is going to be blown away when the rest of the team turns out to be even more competent
Jolon: “Okay, step 1, kill the healer. She’s probably squishy. Next have the beasts aggro pretty sword bio. Then we’ll kill and/or frame the mage. Simple.”
*Five minutes later*
Jolon: “Soooo, am I fighting literal gods or something?”
Okay, I was thinking about it and I don’t think that’s the case anymore. Jolon was using the lacrima to make the chimeras (if that’s really him in panel 2, witch of course it is), while the Collector did it with her own power. Maybe instead of being the Collector he could be working with/for her, though I have no idea what his motivations could be.
Oh no, a bunch of chimera and a life mage vs a Ferrin who is very good at beating up mages, a god-forged living weapon, the Elemental Magus, and an elf who can unmake chimeras by touching them. (Fun fact, Erin didn’t know that last bit as a thing people could do: https://comicaurora.com/aurora/1-8-18/ )Yeah…poor Jolon…I don’t think he’s going to know what hit him.
Sooo… anyone else hoping that Aurora merch will be added to the Redbubble store? Because I need to express my love of this story with physical items.
Also loved Erin and Alinua’s exchange! When you’ve put it all together, but need confirmation for legal reasons.
Ah, basic communication, the bane of any deception/misunderstanding plot. I remember seeing a crossover comic where the villains fooled the heroes into fighting each other only to panic later when the heroes start talking to one another.
I’m glad for Alinua’s instance on panel 4 that they make sure Jolon is responsible, she must feel bad for instantly blaming Falst for the chimeras and doesn’t want to make the same mistake again. Despite realising himself Erin’s face in panel 6 looks almost disappointed. “How could you, a man of the academy, do this?”.
I wonder where this’ll end up. Jolon’s death from their hands or the lacrima breaking as it is in the cover? Do they have the means in the town to imprison him? Will they trust Erin and his sigil over the word of their own doctor?
(Also, does the bottom speech bubble in panel 2 read strangely for anyone? Specifically “a normal bear into a something a lot bigger and meaner”. Is that “a” before “something” a typo? If it is, are the comments or Contact the best way of reporting it?)
Yes, it does sound weird, but I think Red meant to write it that way. Like Falst apparently doesn’t know how to name it so let’s go with “a something”. (Take away the some- and it’ll sound better. “a thing a lot bigger and meaner”.)
I have a theory here:
Yeah actually, everyone’s been saying it but anyhow:
Jolon’s mannerisms truly resemble the collector’s, and…well, Falst did say he “blinded the mage”?
I really think its the collector in disguise.
When Falst mentioned “blinding the mage”, he was talking about blinding Erin (1:”Next time, spare yourself the migraine”; 2: Falst doesn’t know Erin’s name).
Also, I HIGHLY doubt Jolon is secretly anyone else. There’s more than just one or two assholes in the world, after all. Plus, he looks WAY too dissimilar to The Collector to warrant suspicion of shapeshifting, since the only way that people who aren’t shifter ferin can alter their bodies on a fundamental level like that is via life magic, which, as explained on the last page, can go wrong very easily and can only safely accommodate very minor changes.
Oh, I see…Hm, well I assumed Falst meant Jolon because of his glasses for some reason. But in any case, I think at least Jolon is affiliated in some way with the Collector’s schemes. I mean, who else would deliberately do chimeras?
I do see your point, and know that I think of it, Jolon here is quite stupid and ungraceful unlike the Collector.
Again, there are more than a couple of assholes in the world; hundreds of mages over the millennia would’ve made chimeras for plenty of reasons. The practice of making chimeras is widely known and vilified, which it wouldn’t be if only two people in history had ever made them.
Oh dang, y’all, I think he did it to get business! Early in the chapter the innkeeper lady says “it’s a rare traveler that doesn’t need to visit Dr. Jolon when they get here”. Dude literally made mutated monsters terrorize the woods for cash!
This is a great page and all, but why is Dr. Jolon holding his glasses by the lens?! My vision blurs just thinking about fingerprints of my crystal clear glasses.
Is this what Doctor Jolon meant when he said “I hope I’m not too late!”? Like, did he mean he had to stop them from talking to Falst for fear of Falst revealing everything to them?
Wait. If hasn’t moved to the antagonists section, does that mean he’s not actually an antagonist? Or does that mean Red just forgot the character page?
Will Falst ally with our fabulous trio?
Will Erin for once demonstrate he’s half useful in actual combat?
Will Alinua lose her shit this time?
We shall see… In the next panel.
Man, nothing like an EXCELLENT twist to get everyone commenting. I’m seeing so many new names this panel! I’m SO excited! And is it bad that I’m also super excited for some new epic fight choreo? I mean, I feel like a fun fight is bound to happen soon with this fun turn of events.
I saw the first comment was posted at 4:03 am and thought it was Pacific Time. I completely freaked. Like, I kept asking myself how does someone get up so early? Wait, this isn’t Pacific Time, is it?
It’s impressive how much more sinister he looks without the glasses on. The larger the eyes, the softer the look it can be, and with them off, his eyes effectively take up less real estate on his face.
Then again, it could just be the glowing green chimeras in the background.
TL;DR: Cursed floof is definitely not the Chimera mum ripoff. He also doesn’t have a charger, so he only has one chance to uncurse himself, being unable to recharge the magic battery. Therefore, he can’t waste it on being a ripoff. Dr. J, aka Chimera mum ripoff, shows up.
What? A Mild mannered and likable scientist ends up being a despicable person that creates chimaeras? Why I have never seen that one.
While that chimaera hurt me more, I must say I still do like the feels in this one after they realise they have the wrong guy.
So, fun fact. When our good doctor first showed up in scene, I very quickly voice cast him as Taliesin Jaffe in my mind, based on what I heard from him in FF14.
I had no idea that choice was going to prove *that* appropriate! Damn.
Still come back to this panel from time to time cause I swear Jolon is my favourite minor villain we’ve had due how truly sinister that last line is. Like “oh no you rehumanised the minority i was using as a scapegoat for my own gain,” actually terrifying.
could jolon be collector?
Probably not, I think he’s unrelated, but still dangerous.
No; why does everyone keep assuming Jolon is secretly some other person?
Well, he surely is another person in the sense that he’s not only the doctor the pretends to be but is doing some other man shit
BETRAYAL!
Dun dun DUUUUUUN!!!!
WELP MYSTERY SOLVED GANG
…fuck
oh noh
WERE THE GLASSES A LIE TOO
“HAH! You thought I had a vision deficiency, but I was secretly able-bodied thE WHOLE TIME! AHAHAHAHAHA!”
“You fool! You fell for one of the classic blunders! The most famous of which: never separate a scholar from their book bag. But only slightly less well-known is this: NEVER TRUST A PAIR OF GLASSES UNLESS YOU SEE THE PRESCRIPTION FIRST! HAHAHA! HAHAHAHA!”
“You thought i was an evil doctor but i was an evil hipster the whole time!”
“You thought I was nearsighted, but I was actually Clark Kent-ing the whole time! MWHAHAHAHA!!!”
this worked so well and im very impressed
Nooooooo Doctor Jolon was so dorky I don’t want him to be a bad guy!
Falst’s “are we fighting again” is so sweet. Also, that second-to-last panel all but confirms my beliefs that Falst will join the team. You can’t have four people look THAT right together and NOT have them be a team together.
I REALLY REALLY hope that Falst joins the gang. also panel 6 is now my phone background
Let be so. Please please please let it be so
Actually it is mine now too
Yeah, that’s a solid Pose As A Team shot.
Jolon is dorky and I love it, but its official, hes an antagonist. just check the character page, it got updated
In the Trope Talk on Rule of 3 he’s shown as a member of the party
No he’s not
He DEFINITELY is, I just checked. He shows up in a wide shot at 5:34, which also includes Alinua, Erin and Kendal
ohhh FRICK
well uh jolon, hate to break it to ya but ur acting AWEFULLY suss not to mention the possibly chimeras in the background
Quiznak Quiznak Quiznak
Ah, a fellow Voltron fan! Also, agreed, this is definitely grounds for swearing in Altean.

(Granted I’m basing that off of the fact that he fell on his face once, and nothing else, but still. Oh, and his character design was pretty adorkable. Although not now that the glasses are gone!)
Love Kendal’s face in the 6th panel. Has serious “I swear to fucking god…” energy.
“That darn ferrin, spreading its propaganda. It’ll have you think I’m the one a fault here; that it actually has emotions and reasoning. Preposterous!”
just to clear up i don’t hate jolon, just thought it would be funny for him to say that)

I read through those pages again and the Beast they were referring to was Falst.
It was Beasts, plural. There’s only one Falst.
Excellent twist. The “Oh dear. You’ve been TALKING to him.” line gave me the same energy a certain twist from FMA. Great job!
The mystery is solved, let’s all just go home now
Hey, can someone pick up that phone? Because I flippin’ CALLED IT
The funny thing is that Jolon probably thinks that Erin is the team power house which means he is going to be blown away when the rest of the team turns out to be even more competent
Group: “…Solid maybe on that one.”
I’m looking forward to to Jolons confusion.
I LOVE all the “WHAT?!? HOW!?!” That happens on this comic
Yeah, I doubt he would judge the group with different eyes than Erin, so he’ll totally be confused by them.
“Oh dear. You’ve been TALKING to him.”
Wait, is Jolon is not here to talk…?
If Jolon’s glasses had stayed on and with a glare that hid his eyes behind them, this scen would’ve been a lot more Shou Tucker-y
Yes, exactly!
CALLED IT
Ooo awesome, I need that bottom middle panel as a poster. 😀
Hey my immediate gut reaction because of an anime was correct!
Full Metal Alchemist, that’s what it is. Also, I’ll bet Alinua freaks out the most.
Ah, good ol’ Shou Fucker. While Jolon isn’t as much of an asshole as he is (that we currently know of), they have given off similar vibes.
Also, yeah, he should expect NO mercy from Alinua.
S H O U F U C K E R
AH FUCK!
We knew something was going on with him but not what… THAT MOTHER FUCKING ASSHOLE PLAYING AS A HELPFUL GUY!!!
And to think we liked him…..
I thing that guy is an evil dude
GOD FRICKIN DAMMIT RED! WHY!!!!!!
I totally agree with you. WE DEMAND A DOUBLE UPDATE SOON!
OKAY, BUT WHAT IF JOLON IS THE COLLECTOR IN DISGUISE???
Okay, I was thinking about it and I don’t think that’s the case anymore. Jolon was using the lacrima to make the chimeras (if that’s really him in panel 2, witch of course it is), while the Collector did it with her own power. Maybe instead of being the Collector he could be working with/for her, though I have no idea what his motivations could be.

(Fun fact, Erin didn’t know that last bit as a thing people could do: https://comicaurora.com/aurora/1-8-18/ )Yeah…poor Jolon…I don’t think he’s going to know what hit him.
Oh? This should be good…
Although I’m also pretty anxious, considering the chapter cover…
Sooo… anyone else hoping that Aurora merch will be added to the Redbubble store? Because I need to express my love of this story with physical items.
Also loved Erin and Alinua’s exchange! When you’ve put it all together, but need confirmation for legal reasons.
YES MERCH PLEASE
Ah, basic communication, the bane of any deception/misunderstanding plot. I remember seeing a crossover comic where the villains fooled the heroes into fighting each other only to panic later when the heroes start talking to one another.

The Gang: DR JOLON!
Jolon: Yes, it was me. And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren’t for you meddling kids!
(Also, does the bottom speech bubble in panel 2 read strangely for anyone? Specifically “a normal bear into a something a lot bigger and meaner”. Is that “a” before “something” a typo? If it is, are the comments or Contact the best way of reporting it?)
Nope, that’s perfectly good grammar as ar as I know.
“Into a something” seems like a typo to me. It just sounds awkward when read aloud
Yes, it does sound weird, but I think Red meant to write it that way. Like Falst apparently doesn’t know how to name it so let’s go with “a something”. (Take away the some- and it’ll sound better. “a thing a lot bigger and meaner”.)
Turns out it was a typo; Red fixed it
I have a theory here:
Yeah actually, everyone’s been saying it but anyhow:
Jolon’s mannerisms truly resemble the collector’s, and…well, Falst did say he “blinded the mage”?
I really think its the collector in disguise.

You study the ancients texts steadily, don’t you, oh wise one? (By this I mean the extra lore :D)
Yay, presumably decade-long grudge!
“Oh, you’ve been talking to him” What it’s not like Flast is a living, sane, being or anything, right?
“Wait, what’s going on? Are we fighting again?” XD
Yep, evil doctor. Looks like we’ve got ourselves a mad scientist!
The glasses were a fashion statement all along!
*GASP*
I can see shifty-mc-shifter has finally reveled himself. He seemed too innocent when we first met him. And just loving that last panel.
Doctor Jolon looks so innocently worried. I’m kinda scared he’ll actually kill them with kindness.
I’m getting “I’m really sorry about this (unleashes killer beasts)” vibes
What a twist
Dangit I was like the one person who actually thought he was innocent
Oh dang, y’all, I think he did it to get business! Early in the chapter the innkeeper lady says “it’s a rare traveler that doesn’t need to visit Dr. Jolon when they get here”. Dude literally made mutated monsters terrorize the woods for cash!
That’s what I’ve been thinking, too. The things people will do in the name of capitalism…
So, he is a Scooby Doo villain?!
jolon sus (sorry I had to)
rED this is soo awesome how the hell are you so good at this?!
Yes, Falst, you are fighting again. Just this time you’re fighting with the floofy squad, not against it.
This is a great page and all, but why is Dr. Jolon holding his glasses by the lens?! My vision blurs just thinking about fingerprints of my crystal clear glasses.
Clearly he is wearing fake glasses, like an evil Superman!
WOW. JOLON WAS EVIL. TO THE SURPRISE OF LITERALLY NO ONE, NOT EVEN ERIN AND ALLINUA.
Ohhh I just remembered: Everybody check the character page next update to see if Jolon moves to “antagonist!”
It’s been updated so he is now confirmed to be an antagonist
Will Falst ally with our fabulous trio?

Will Alinua lose her shit this time?
We shall see… In the next panel.
Man, nothing like an EXCELLENT twist to get everyone commenting. I’m seeing so many new names this panel! I’m SO excited! And is it bad that I’m also super excited for some new epic fight choreo? I mean, I feel like a fun fight is bound to happen soon with this fun turn of events.
I guess Red talking about watching Bleach recently should’ve clued us in that the nice glasses guy was gonna be bad news.
I saw the first comment was posted at 4:03 am and thought it was Pacific Time. I completely freaked. Like, I kept asking myself how does someone get up so early? Wait, this isn’t Pacific Time, is it?
What if Jolon is the one who made the Ferin?
Absolutely not. The ferin mage lived and died a millennium before the events of the story.
I love the eyes in the background of the last panel. Such a cool and clever way to convey meaning
People can make Ferin? I thought it was genetic.
It is. Jolon is making chimeras, not Ferin.
Yeah, Kendal lookin’ pissed af.
It’s impressive how much more sinister he looks without the glasses on. The larger the eyes, the softer the look it can be, and with them off, his eyes effectively take up less real estate on his face.
Then again, it could just be the glowing green chimeras in the background.
The middle panel on the bottom looks so fucking cool.
There eyes all burrowing into Jolon, and somehow the height difference make it better as well.
Looks like the team might have found their ‘he’s a jerk, but he’s OUR jerk’ member. ^_^
So… Remember a few pages ago when I said Dr. Jolon had Frankenstein vibes, and a bunch if people were offended that I compared the two…
WELL GUESS WHAT
Woohoo! Finally revealing his true nature in the antagonist section of the character page!
Not only is their death glare amazing, props to Red for making the villain have boring brown hair!
Does Doctor Jolon and Falst look similar to anyone else?
bro this is like the dude from fma
WAS ANYBODY INJURED?
-Dr Jolon
TL;DR: Cursed floof is definitely not the Chimera mum ripoff. He also doesn’t have a charger, so he only has one chance to uncurse himself, being unable to recharge the magic battery. Therefore, he can’t waste it on being a ripoff. Dr. J, aka Chimera mum ripoff, shows up.

While that chimaera hurt me more, I must say I still do like the feels in this one after they realise they have the wrong guy.
Yeah, but that other person is also Jolon.
Frig, that was supposed to be a reply. How do people do that?
That doctor is actually quite a good antagonist.
Dr. Jolon: Oh crap. You appeared to have realized that Falst has a sympathetic motivation, and that I am the true villain of this arc.
o man this twist got me by supersize. clearly i learned nothing from FMA
Red you bastard you made me fall in love with the cute clumsy doctor man and then you turned him evil!
Alt text: oh no! look out! it’s behind you!
So, fun fact. When our good doctor first showed up in scene, I very quickly voice cast him as Taliesin Jaffe in my mind, based on what I heard from him in FF14.
I had no idea that choice was going to prove *that* appropriate! Damn.

Well, I suppose that explains a graduate of the university of elemental mad science living in this backwater.
“Time to take off my good boy glasses and shift into evil mode >:)”
Still come back to this panel from time to time cause I swear Jolon is my favourite minor villain we’ve had due how truly sinister that last line is. Like “oh no you rehumanised the minority i was using as a scapegoat for my own gain,” actually terrifying.
