At least in the “still standing” category, yes, it won’t survive the next ~30 minutes. Unless Rakhn really really wants to win this award and calls off the eruption.
(Also, would it affect Rakhn’s personality/look if the most striking feature of his island was suddenly a tree and not a volcano?)
Possibly? I guess it might matter if it’s something natural or magically added. But maybe when the magic disperses, if it’s still there, he might have a green streak through his hair, or new bangs now, or something. xD
It feels way too early for it to be The Collector, Red wouldn’t use up a major villain this early especially since nobody has any idea how to beat her.
If it was the collector that probably wouldn’t be a tree though. Homegirl seems to be less restricted in her options. Could probably just throw mutated sentient trees at the paladins or “heal” air or water in a way that turns it into projectiles.
also the way red draws Alinua’s magic and the way she draws the collector’s magic is very different, you can see the difference when the collector heals zuurith and vash, her magic is a pale almost sickly green while alinua’s magic is a much more vibrant and alive green
That was Life healing Stone. Stone’s glow is white with a subtle green cast, Life in-itself is always Bright Green — whether it’s ‘toxic’ or ‘vibrant’ depends on the caster
That titanic plant hand is prety uncany on panel 1 and I also have a bad feeling that The Paladins will think Erin did this. Why? Becouse they think The Void dragon is the only dangerous think in the world (pun not intended).
The shiny colours and lighting! Source lighting effects are just smashing.
Love Tess’ relaxed body language. “Oh, cool, I wonder what she’ll do?” rather than “the heeeelllll”. Great contrast to the dragonrider!
I’m afraid I owe someone three Unidentifiable Grandma Candies, because my bet was off.
(Holy shit, did I misspell owe or is my brain not working today?)
I genuinely love being immersed in combat scenes in this webcomic and thinking “dang how are these scrappy characters gonna make it out this time” and then Alinua gets freed up from being comatose or saving 1000s of people or something and then it’s just Big Tree Time
Aquilis: Ok, been a rough day for us Dragons. Aryss got thunder-punched, Calian’s in hot water, and I’m currently carrying the guy who one-shotted Vros. Well, it’s over now, we’re heading out, so smooth flying back to … wait, what’s that green glow behind- OH MY LADY WHAT IS THAT!?!
All these pages with no sign at all, all these near instances, all these problems that were resolved or not by themselves, I had honestly, truly believed that Deus ex Alinua was off the table. And here we are. Given Alinua’s mindset an attempted intervention was almost inevitable; we just didn’t know how or when.
… At least I hope that’s Alinua doing that and not the Collector.
Volcanic soil tends to be good in nutrients, and it shows! I doubt this tree will be as long-lasting or substantial as the one in Zuurith though; just a really long arm grown really fast for a quick grab before retracting. Hopefully Kendal will see his chance and Aquilis will be caught off guard.
However, even if it does work, and that’s still an “if”, there’s still Falst to consider. He’s smuggled on board one of those boats and could be none the wiser to all this, at least right now. If it works, he needs to get off his boat and onto the arm quickly, or else the gang will still need to infiltrate the Snowfast in a rescue attempt. If it doesn’t, he’s best staying put to help rescue Kendal stealthily.
While I don’t think it will ultimately work, it’s sure to give the Paladins a scare and more questions to ask Kendal once he’s interrogated.
I can just picture Alinua and Life yelling at the top of their lungs “TELL ME WHERE KENDAL IS! GIVE HIM BACK NOW!!”
On a side note, I feel kinda bad for Suressa. She’s almost certainly getting a migraine from all the distressed reports about the Enormous Fuck You Seaweed Hand. And Rakhn is gonna be reminiscing about this one (1) day for decades at least. XD
Rakhn asked Kendal for a Vash fight, and I think that’s the one single bit of drama that HASN’T happened on this island today XD. I wonder if he’s angry about that or just cackling like a madman who’s on the side with popcorn
Oh, this has been Rakhn’s Best Day Ever in centuries. I almost wonder if he’d ask Vash to wait until the euphoria runs its course so the two exciting days don’t interact weirdly in his mind. Like waiting for a pallet cleanser before trying out another delicious meal.
I hope Rakhn is seeing this, it seems like a show he’d enjoy and Alinua speedgrowing megaflora is probably a once per location thing.
Somehow I doubt this will save Kendal. There’s just too many Bweem capable dragoriders along the vine, and the story potential of Kendal, Falst, and maybe Tess in paladin jail land is great. And I want to see how Alinua handles loosing him and how she, Dainix and Erin work together to pick up the pieces on their side of this mess.
WHOO! Go Alinua! Can she just manipulate unlimited amounts of Life energy? I think this might be her version of an overchannel. If she’s even capable of that, because, again, she straight up might not have a limit in that regard. And remember. Yesterday’s “WHAT’S THAT?” are today’s Big Plant. If a character is looking at something they do not understand, 1/3 times it’s Alinua being given a reason to borderline break the magic system (“New landmark?” “New landmark.”).
I do think it’s really interesting seeing this for ALL spectators of the story. We of course love seeing Alinua put so much effort, so apparently desperate, into rescuing Kendal. But I am very curious about how Life feels about it, though. Because I’d like to think that she’s moved by this too. Just a thought.
i mean we know what happens when chimeric carrions ovcerchanel, they blow up so i doubt this is her overchanneling, probably going to tire her out like breaking the mountain did in zurith tho
Yeah, that’s probably what’ll happen. This is even bigger than what she did on Zuurith, I’m pretty sure. She’ll either grab Kendal and collapse, or find her body’s limit and collapse anyway.
Oh, and speaking of spectators, I am definitely seeing the possibility of Shrike and her crew finding this as well, some time after they leave. It’s going to be funny if all they have to do to follow the floof squad is follow the trail of large flora that didn’t use to be there. Another spectator, Rakhn! I am fascinated by what he might feel by this. He is erupting, so most of the plant will burn down, but given how the nature of gods is to be affected by changes in their landscape, he probably feels this disfigurement like a punch to the face. Or he is laughing about it. Or both! Though given the sheer size of that thing, I wouldn’t be surprised if he temporarily grew a small branch of wood into his flaming hair to better represent his current appearance. Kind of like that forest god whose avatar became scary because his forest became fearsome.
I thought Gleicann explained it as being influenced by the people of the location? The people started to fear the forest, so Gleicann’s appearance became more fearsome. But I imagine Rakhn will get many many stories about this day from his people!
I would love to see Shrike & co’s reaction to Alinua’s Big Trees 😀
YES IT WA ALINUA!! I’m so happy!!!! Girl has so much aura rn!! Is she gonna like try to grab Aquillis and pull them back so Kendal doesn’t get kidnapped? I’m exiteddddd
I was just thinking about Tess’s comment about Alinua beinga ble to tear apart the island, and yeah, given what she did at Zuurith for a bunch of strangers, this is the logical conclusion of what she’d do for Kendal.
I don’t know if Alinua is just steadily getting stronger at the a consistant upward rate, or if she was charged up by releasing all that Life energy from the Northern Wyrm rather than getting weakened.
This is awesome, but I’m afraid Stefan won’t let go so easily. Plus we have three characters on dragons which is. agreat setup for a prison break arc, so my guess is we’re going to see the fallout of the Deus Ex Alinua failing.
i think this is a mix of 1:Growing a tree into a mountain probably requires a lot more effort than growing this plant tentacle into the air and 2:Valia’s speech to alinua(and to a certain extent Life) back in Siren’s call
a key component of both Life and Alinua’s characters has been the mutual fear of their power, Alinua is introduced as fearing that her powers will eventually grow too much and she will explode mutating all around her, later this becomes the fear that her powers are changing her and that she is nothing more than a vessel for life or that she maybe did die back when her powers awoke and that now she is just life puppeting her corpse so she is extremely cautious with her power because she is afraid it could break her and everything around it
life has the same fear but in the opposite direction, she spent every moment of her revival up to alinua’s awakening trying and failing to create a vessel and whenever she failed she killed someone and in her own words:warped everything around it to her very nature, this leads back to when alinua breaks the mountain in zuurith:Life is afraid that her interference will cause another chimeric plague, killing alinua and everyone around her again so she to not act even if her help could be necessary
wich is something that valia calls BOTH of them out on, they are both over cautious because they dont want to hurt others but someone like alinua has never existed before and if they let this fear controll them they wont be able to do what needs to be done, culminating in their dont be afraid moment at the end of Siren’s call
ALINUA!!!!!!!!!

Three dragons to the far left, above the slope of the volcano, illuminated. Two dragons in the smoke (one to the left, one a bit hard to see to the right) look for lava-coloured V shapes. One conspicuous, directly below the base of the huge tree. Six close to each other gathering on the shore, then six more scattered in the air “below” the tree, in the middle of the frame. Fourteen close to the island, “above” the base of the tree, including one that’s near the volcano lit brown by the lava. Six more further away from the island “above” the tree. One is being reached towards. Calian is underwater.

*crowd cheers and fucking explodes*
<- part of the crowd
Chanting like a crowd at a football game: A-LIN-UA! A-LIN-UA!
*also shanting but chanting A-LIN-U-A because my brain refuses to pronounce it correctly*
That’s how I pronounce it, so you’re in excellent company. I think that’s honestly more intuitive given the spelling anyway.
Wait, what? How else is it supposed to be pronounced?
@veggiesnake
A-leen-wa. The ‘U’ is a semivowel here, and probably chosen because it looks more elegant than W. It is a bit confusing though
Never been sure if it ended sounding like “oo ah” or “wah”
*cheering as well*

Mhm! XD Still waiting for it to fail!
Yeah there is an entire volcano blowing up behind it. I don’t think the plant is *that* fire-resistant
but consider: it’s very big
… damn. Zuzu just lost the “largest tree in the world” contest to an actively erupting volcano.
The loss is going to be short lived.
At least in the “still standing” category, yes, it won’t survive the next ~30 minutes. Unless Rakhn really really wants to win this award and calls off the eruption.

Yooooooooiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiink
ALINUA YOU F-ING POWERHOUSE
Everyone not in the squad: WTF?!?
Of the anyone in the world, I am afraid it is the one who wiped out a city to steal their god.
Beautiful final frame as always, though.
yeah, that was my first thought. the collector may be here
It feels way too early for it to be The Collector, Red wouldn’t use up a major villain this early especially since nobody has any idea how to beat her.
If it was the collector that probably wouldn’t be a tree though. Homegirl seems to be less restricted in her options. Could probably just throw mutated sentient trees at the paladins or “heal” air or water in a way that turns it into projectiles.
Big Tree is like Alinuas signature move.
I just hope the big tree is about to yoink Kendal back!
The collector has dragon sized chimeras.
Trees are more a Alinua move.
Nah, the collector still has no idea where they are. Or, she had no idea. This may have just got her attention.
Alinua going loud may just be enough to get her attention.
also the way red draws Alinua’s magic and the way she draws the collector’s magic is very different, you can see the difference when the collector heals zuurith and vash, her magic is a pale almost sickly green while alinua’s magic is a much more vibrant and alive green

Hmmm…
I think someone’s a bit upset.
Just a bit.
Yep.
*smacks lips* just a little bit.
Alinuas biggest plant yet. Volcano for scale
DON’T MESS WITH ALINUA!
That titanic plant hand is prety uncany on panel 1 and I also have a bad feeling that The Paladins will think Erin did this. Why? Becouse they think The Void dragon is the only dangerous think in the world (pun not intended).
ALINUA I missed you so
“As it turns out, it doesn’t matter if ‘my demigod’ is ‘beyond your power to help.'”
“He’s still in mine.”
This gave me literal chills
YESSSSSSSSS
We shall soon have a proper flight of dragons. As in, the dragons flying away in fear and fright!
That cantilever is utterly insane.
The shiny colours and lighting! Source lighting effects are just smashing.
Love Tess’ relaxed body language. “Oh, cool, I wonder what she’ll do?” rather than “the heeeelllll”. Great contrast to the dragonrider!
Surely, the increasing degree of limb-ness in Alinua’s landscape-scale trees and constructs is no cause for concern.
…At least Rakhn gets a good front row seat out of this.
Guys I think Alinua is chill about the whole affair
AYYY
I’m afraid I owe someone three Unidentifiable Grandma Candies, because my bet was off.
(Holy shit, did I misspell owe or is my brain not working today?)
HOLY SHITTTTTTTTTTTTTR
HELL YEAHHHHHHH
It’s our girl!!
Oh yeah, Kendal being beyond the Northeren Wyrm’s power to help does not mean that Alinua can’t save him herself.
Certified Powerhouse behaviour
I think Kendal is pretty far away by now…
I genuinely love being immersed in combat scenes in this webcomic and thinking “dang how are these scrappy characters gonna make it out this time” and then Alinua gets freed up from being comatose or saving 1000s of people or something and then it’s just Big Tree Time
Holy crap, Alinua ex machina indeed.
(I wonder if she knows about our runaway kitty?)
Alinua here to casually remind everyone that she is in fact the baddest motherfucker in the narrative

Is there a snatching equivalent of yeet? I feel like this is some sort of anti-yeet
I believe the commonly accepted equivalent is “yoink”.
I hope Rakhn is seeing this, it seems like a show he’d enjoy and Alinua speedgrowing megaflora is probably a once per location thing.
Somehow I doubt this will save Kendal. There’s just too many Bweem capable dragoriders along the vine, and the story potential of Kendal, Falst, and maybe Tess in paladin jail land is great. that paladin guy is about to find out why its these particular people who are keeping an eye on the vessel of void
paladin lord: i have the power of god and anime on my side!
alinua: i AM both god AND ANIME
Man it’d be real tragic if Alinua couldn’t grow that tree fast or far enough to reach Kendal at the last second.
The real question will be can it be cut by light magic.
If a tree swats a Dragon in the sky, does it make a sound?
For the dwarves in Order of the Stick, Alinuas average tree would be Kaijus.
I hope Falst notices when they change the plan to “get in the water” and can jump in afterwards?
The dwarves would be declaring war against her lol
Oh my Vash that is terrifying
“Such power! It must be the Magus!” -paladins probably
GET OVER HERE!!!
Mortal Kombat! Fight!
This doesn’t really fit the page but.
“You’re not getting away this time.
Forgot to put another ” at the end of the comment. ops
Excuse me Paladins but I do believe that is Not Yours.
No one can out run the long arm of the life!
Oh she is ride or die.
i wouldnt be so sure about the die part given the whole life avatar thing
Oh my god. That is so *fucking awesome*!! Get em Alinua!!
Alinua has re-entered the chat.

I’m imagining how much this move must be demanding from Alinua. I think she’s going to be exhausted.
I was waiting fot that
YES IT WA ALINUA!! I’m so happy!!!! Girl has so much aura rn!! Is she gonna like try to grab Aquillis and pull them back so Kendal doesn’t get kidnapped? I’m exiteddddd

I just want to say that I DID call it earlier

yoink
Holy powerhouse plants batman!
You thought you were dealing with the heavy hitters before? Now the REAL fight begins
CLERIC: I cast “Yoink” with a 9th level spell slot.
DM: Dear god.
CERNUNNOS: Yes?
DM: Not you again!
Panel 2 has me stumped. What is that middle figure of the 3 figures on the right side? It looks like it has 4(!) wings.
Probably a storm drake. Those have four wings.
Alinua sending a tree to chase a dragon is something of a stretch, don’t you think?
And here comes Alinua with a bold last second yoink, let see how its pans out.
And now we know what that Paladin was
Looking at
In surprise, confusion and utter bafflement.
Now clinging to their dragon with a terrified look
Underneath, Tess hangs calmly(ish)
And everyone in the audience knows who that tree belongs to.
Unrelatedly, PvD (plants versus dragons)
ALINUA!!!!
Alinua: Mine!!!!!
Of all the days to swap back to reading on a laptop instead of a phone, this was a PERFECT page to do it.
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but do I count FORTY dragons that the paladins brought!!
FORTY DRAGONS!
You know, I wasn’t expecting giant plant arm from Alinua trying to grab Kendall, but I probably should’ve.
And here I was, foolishly thinking we had to worry about the party getting more split, not realizing that Alinua is absolutely not going to let that happen, silly me!
Oh, she mad.
ALINUA!!! The RELIEF I feel, and the glee that she’s re-entering the narrative with a plant colossus grabby hand…
Unfortunately, I think Aquilis and Stefan may have gone out too far ahead of the rest of the army. Squad will have to regroup and figure out a plan to attack the Snowfast, probably. Maybe Alinua can catch Tess, though. Dangling from that dragon looks a mite precarious.
Its really cool seeing red get better and better at drawing sd this comic goes on.
I can almost hear Tess, “Oh hey, Alinua’s here.”
Alinua is calmly asking for her bestie back.
