There are three things all wise man fear. A storm at sea, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man. Red seems to have a fondness for the first. Probably because the second one makes no sense, and the third one can be viewed as innuendo.
YOOOOO I HAVE THAT BOOK ON MY SHELF. The second one makes sense, don’t you remember when that fucking idiot stole the moon (not Gru from Despicable Me)
I suppose, outside of the world of Temerant, it could be a reference to how a moonless night is theoretically the darkest possible night, i.e a very good time for unknown attacks. But it’s…kind of a stretch.
I dunno man me personally I would simply not ignore it when a demigod draws his sword for “no reason.” But I’m just built different ig (not prideful, in fact severe confidence issues)
I wonder if those were the souls of Vash, or Vash himself, or both. Also it’d be funny if Kendal just never gets a good nap, ever, across the entire duration of the comic. Like “Ok, I’m going to rest, because my body needs it. Nothing bad will happen this time. I am in a field of flowers in the Monastery, our destination. We just fended off the collector. No posible harm could come to us. It will be fine” followed by the abrupt appearence of Vash’s blue and Kendal just sighs as Vash is like “Sup Kendal! Finally fell asleep again, huh? Are you ready for me to show you some highly anxiety inducing, life threatening exposition you must relay to your party the second you wake up, most likely in a cold sweat?” followed by Kendal combusting in the dream for dramatic effect. Little did he know that when he eventually woke up he was going to find that he also combusted in real life, setting the whole field on fire. And then a meteor falls on him because why not.
I think we can safely assume that, while Vash’s voice would definitely be the loudest, everyone in the entirety of Vash’s soul screamed the exact same thing 😛
Kendal: (sigh) I bet Alinua doesn’t have to deal with this when she sleeps. (Meanwhile Alinua is dreaming of herself, etherial, giant, butt-naked, and projected above the ship, viewing the surrounding sea plants and animals as Life looks on at her above.)
Alinua: (sigh) I bet Kendal doesn’t have to deal with this when he sleeps.
Man I’m so ready for everyone to have their prophetic/trauma related dreams, and then we just have Tess who gets normal dreams. like where erin is a turtle.
I can just imagine them all talking after a long rest about their respective dreams (except probably falst. he’d dream, but he wouldn’t tell anyone), and Tess would just go “wild. I dreamed that our boat was just purple for some reason.”
Straight up spit laughed at “a turtle.” Fr tho, I think Tess prolly got some dark secrets, even if it’s just in conjunction with her experiences with – and love for – her brother
Also, I just found out you can add ?replytocom= at the end of ur url to make it so you can see all of the comments before the page refreshes to show them without it.
Tess: So is drawing your sword dramatically when you wake up part of your morning routine? Because I’ve seen you do it twice now.
Remember back in Windcrest in 1-4-24 where Kendal was smiling and having a good time with Alinua, then the Storm disappeared and he was back in crisis mode? Such a fool I was to think Kendal’s contentedness would last into next week; ah well, it was good while it lasted.
Let’s start with the positives, shall we? Thanks to this warning, that I presume came from Vash, Kendal knows the Collector is on her way, and he can tell the others that too. She’s lost the element of surprise and they have time to prepare. Plus, they’re still traveling on a fast boat and now going into a storm; even if the Collector has a way to track them, following them directly will be difficult.
However, the Singing Cave tunnel system, including underwater entrances, gives her plenty of opportunities to close the gap and attack unexpectedly, or reach Helm before they do. Not to mention there’s a non-zero chance that Kendal might keep this information to himself, seeing it as his problem; I hope he doesn’t, character development and all, but I’m not ruling it out.
Ok, that’s a big storm, but the gang have fought a sentient storm before, so I’m quietly confident about Erin’s ability to deal with this. Keep the ship’s magic charged up, Tess ready to catch lightning, and Erin working the calming effects.
Though I wonder what could complicate it: Dainix’s condition deteriorating and forcing Erin’s attention elsewhere? Gods are having a row in there and Kendal needs to step in? The storm’s extreme conditions being too much for the prototype boat?
I mean. Erin handled the storm fine until it cheated by turning into a dragon. Both times, actually. That certainly wouldn’t happen a third time. Right…?
I guess she’s got a way to cross water. Riding the back of a whale? A shark? A whale-shark? (which is an actual thing, but a super chill creature. It’d be mean to make it attack.)
My prediction. The ocean is part of the body of Water. Therefore, the collector is simply ‘healing’ the water back into something a little more tangible
Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean (anything bigger than them is a mammal) and are classified as sharks, *not* whales. Despite their impressive size, they’re not harmful or aggressive toward most creatures; they feed on plankton as their throats are too small to swallow much else. Whale sharks are friendly toward humans and will gladly let you swim alongside them (though touching or riding one is usually punishable by fine).
Sorry if that was too much lol, just wanted to share about these guys.
Good point! That might actually make more sense, come to think of it. (In some regards.)
So the Vashi are soul material lingering under a mountain and waiting to be released. It’s getting more probable every time we see Her that the Lady is Primordial Soul. So any part of Her would naturally be in touch with Her in some ways, possible with every other part of Her.
So a large mass of swirling soul energy still possessing some kind of sapience would be aware of it’s designated Last One Remembering being approached by another part of Soul. And then reach out. Maybe. You might notice I’m speculating rather heavily here.
But then again, since the Lady sent Her Champion (“Michael”) after them, wouldn’t it then be “HE’s coming”? Since the Lady currently has no coherent form, as far as I understand it.
Guys guys what if that storm *is* the collector’s attack? Giant cloud of insects or birds or flying jellyfish chimerae or something. …Probably a bit of a tinfoil hat theory. But still.
I feel like she’d struggle to do much with water. While she’s got an perspective that lets her do interesting things with just Life manipulation, I’m not sure causing a storm could be classed ‘healing’ the bodies of either water or air for that matter.
She’s coming, the voices of Cash howl,
The vessel leaps from his sleep, Kendal drawn.
They sail into sunlit banks of fog,
In bright morning, well past dawn.
“I love the enthusiasm, but there’s no need to get up,”
Standing at the prow says Erin,
And as his sister looks at Kendal with more concerns,
“We won’t be needing any divine intervention.”
There once was a vessel of Vash
Whose sleep was ended with a crash.
A dream-voice is thrumming
With alarm. “She is coming!”
While ahead of them storm winds lash.
Yay, I finally managed to find enough rhymes for Vash! Actually, there are plenty of words that rhyme with Vash, just usually not enough that fit what’s happening in the comic.
Erin, dear, your focus is admirable but you may want to consider something has caught Kendal’s attention *besides* the beautifully rendered clouds you appear to be headed into. Ah, well, at least Kendal can simply explain what —
*flashback* “It’s hard to explain things to [Erin], so I usually just do them and he figures it out later.”
… Oh no.
I hadn’t thought of that, but oh no. It would admittedly be very in character for Kendal to just not mention it ‘because it’s god business, not for people’ or something. However, I sincerely hope he doesn’t.
But come to think of it, yeah that particular line of dialogue seems like an excellent Chekhov’s gun to fire now.
SickTats McHubris’ hubris is hubrising. Is that a words? Too bad, it is now.
Looks like Nāmaka just woke up to see the Floof Squad in her ocean and thought ‘Unacceptable!’ because unless it’s made by a god like Tynan, there is no plausible explanation for a storm’s edges to be that defined (other than artistic liberties).
For context, Nāmaka is a Hawaiian ocean goddess. I won’t call her *the* ocean goddess because there’s numerous ocean deities (e.g. certain aumakua, as well as her brother, Kāmohoali‘i) but she seems to be one of the bigger ones, and has power over the ocean itself. I’m no expert on the Hawaiian pantheon, even though I live in Hawai‘i, so please feel free to correct me. This is just what I understand about the religion.
Also I’ve had to rewrite this comment like five times because I’m a bumbling idiot who can’t navigate a webpage to save her life before I decided to just write this in Notes and copy/paste it to the webpage.
y’know “kendal suddenly finds out about the collector chasing him” was not how i expected this page to go but at least she’s far enough away that she isnt in line of sight. or she’s hiding behind the clouds who can say
NNNOOOO HE LOOKED SO HAPPY AND PEACEFUL TAT
Also, my thoughts and prayers go out to Dainix cuz that storm is NOT gonna be fun for his seasickness and he’s already having like. The worst time.
It’s probably pretty fun now that I think about it, to have a protagonist that receives divine notifications only when asleep, who also barely ever sleeps.
Idr if I said this before, but I don’t think erin is the smart guy. I think he’s the lancer. Falst has a lancer build, but kinda came off as big when he joined. I think he’s going to be the smart guy.
I also think the roles of the five man band are being shared here a little.
More than a little, really. Red has stated before (on her Tumblr) that none of her characters slot into a five-man band role, and I agree with her. They’re all powerhouses, they’re all smart in different ways and different situations, they all contrast each other and have the potential to go off and do their own thing…
I love that to everyone else it just looks like Kendel drew his sword on a storm incoming. Although tbf, I guess he’s had to fight a storm before so that’s a lot less strange than it could be.
Why is it always the weather?
ikr. Is Erin going to destroy *another* storm?
There are three things all wise man fear. A storm at sea, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man. Red seems to have a fondness for the first. Probably because the second one makes no sense, and the third one can be viewed as innuendo.
YOOOOO I HAVE THAT BOOK ON MY SHELF. The second one makes sense, don’t you remember when that fucking idiot stole the moon (not Gru from Despicable Me)
What’s the book name now I want to read it
I suppose, outside of the world of Temerant, it could be a reference to how a moonless night is theoretically the darkest possible night, i.e a very good time for unknown attacks. But it’s…kind of a stretch.
Erin thinks this is the weather that made Kendal act up; but it’s not. “She’s coming”, he heard. The Collector. The Big Bad Evil Gal.
You ever feel a disturbance in the force? Like a thousand voices crying out at once in a panic?
Nope, me neither. Must have been the wind or something.
Yeah must’ve been the lacrima malfunctioning or something
I can hear Red’s voice saying “Everything is Fiiine!” (roll eyes in pain)
For mobile readers.
Alt-text: would you say you’re even more powerful than the gods perhaps

With the floofs? No way!
Awww!
(this is fantastic. Thank you Red, and thank you iron_fist.)
Twitter text: please let this be a normal field trip
Tumblr text: if sleep is good for you then why does this keep happening huh
I dunno man me personally I would simply not ignore it when a demigod draws his sword for “no reason.” But I’m just built different ig (not prideful, in fact severe confidence issues)
That’s probably fine, right? Right?
I wonder if those were the souls of Vash, or Vash himself, or both. Also it’d be funny if Kendal just never gets a good nap, ever, across the entire duration of the comic. At least it looks like he was able to sleep through the night. Just had a WAKE UP! morning jump scare instead of full on exposition astro projection.

Unless the Collector is bringing the storm. We’ve seen her heal Primordial Stone. What happens when she heals Primordial Wind?
Still, it seems too early for Her to arrive. I’m placing my bets on Sea God shenanigans, or maybe pirate weather mages.
Yes, because the last time you encountered a storm it went so well
I mean. Erin handled the storm fine until it cheated by turning into a dragon. Both times, actually. That certainly wouldn’t happen a third time. Right…?
Oops, Life Mage is closing in on them.
Tell me more about these whale-sharks
Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean (anything bigger than them is a mammal) and are classified as sharks, *not* whales. Despite their impressive size, they’re not harmful or aggressive toward most creatures; they feed on plankton as their throats are too small to swallow much else. Whale sharks are friendly toward humans and will gladly let you swim alongside them (though touching or riding one is usually punishable by fine).
Sorry if that was too much lol, just wanted to share about these guys.
I’m sorry, punishable by fine? Who’s enforcing this? And what would sharks need with money?
Are Greenland sharks, the ones who live hundreds of years (there’s one that’s over 500 years old!) a type of whale shark?
No, Greenland sharks are their own species. “Whale shark” is a species, not an umbrella for multiple different types of shark.
It might be the Collector, sure, but part of me is actually wondering if “SHE” might be the Light Dragon!
Same!

Well that bodes well
A scream in a dream: “SHE’S COMING”, they call
With a start Kendal wakes to a towering storm wall
Also woooow that is foreboding.
Guys guys what if that storm *is* the collector’s attack? Giant cloud of insects or birds or flying jellyfish chimerae or something. …Probably a bit of a tinfoil hat theory. But still.
I’m not sure about insects, but I wouldn’t put it past her for it to be some weird “healing water” shenaneganery being caused by her.
I feel like she’d struggle to do much with water. While she’s got an perspective that lets her do interesting things with just Life manipulation, I’m not sure causing a storm could be classed ‘healing’ the bodies of either water or air for that matter.
Thank again for everything Red, you’re one of the most excellent ones. Be well.
I love Tess… and look at that wind-tossed hair!
However. FOCUS. Kendal does that sort of thing, you take NOTICE, SicTats McHubris!
She’s coming, the voices of Cash howl,
The vessel leaps from his sleep, Kendal drawn.
They sail into sunlit banks of fog,
In bright morning, well past dawn.
“I love the enthusiasm, but there’s no need to get up,”
Standing at the prow says Erin,
And as his sister looks at Kendal with more concerns,
“We won’t be needing any divine intervention.”
Okay, nit even I can back up Hubris McGee here.
If this is not fog, I guess I’ll have to change it. I would point out that it really looks level with the ship, so that rules out some options.
* They sail into a low bank of sunlit clouds,
*not
That’s fine, just a bad dream. Absolutely nothing is going to go wrong. Why would you thing that?
oh look, it’s slightly cloudy
Oh SHIT I forgot Collector knows about him now
Stupid gods and their stupid night terrors just lemme get some sleep smh
There once was a vessel of Vash
Whose sleep was ended with a crash.
A dream-voice is thrumming
With alarm. “She is coming!”
While ahead of them storm winds lash.
Yay, I finally managed to find enough rhymes for Vash! Actually, there are plenty of words that rhyme with Vash, just usually not enough that fit what’s happening in the comic.
That’s why poetry is an art, it’s NOT easy! (smile)
“And now: The weather!”
I wonder how they can tell? They’re still under a mountain
That was probably Vash and his people speaking. And Vash would definitely know what the Collector is up to.
Whoever chose “dream sequence” last week — put a chip on your bingo card!
Tess in that last panel knows what’s up. Listen to the demigod
TL;DR: I’ve taken on one storm, what’s one more?
Erin, dear, your focus is admirable but you may want to consider something has caught Kendal’s attention *besides* the beautifully rendered clouds you appear to be headed into. Ah, well, at least Kendal can simply explain what —
*flashback* “It’s hard to explain things to [Erin], so I usually just do them and he figures it out later.”
…Well, crap.
Oh noooooo 🙁 I did not connect those dots, somehow! Kendal I swear if you don’t tell your friends… well, I’m sure the conses will quence.
SickTats McHubris’ hubris is hubrising. Is that a words? Too bad, it is now.

Erin the last storm we ran into you blew yourself up and got possessed
y’know “kendal suddenly finds out about the collector chasing him” was not how i expected this page to go but at least she’s far enough away that she isnt in line of sight. or she’s hiding behind the clouds who can say

this feels like a reason for Kendal to avoid sleeping.
Pleas let Erin make a massive version of the lightning bubble shield like he used before.
Oh, seems it’s time for the next boss fight. Against an immortal…on a ship…made of wood…the thing she can control…oh boy.
average nap dream experience
HUBRIS
