As the ship races over the waves, five members of the gang sit on the deck, with Falst still down in the hold.
“It’s bread, and that’s definitely a fruit jam… but what’s this paste?” Alinua asks, staring at the two halves of her sandwich.
“You’ve never had seed butter before? Smells like they made this one out of mendul nuts,” Tess says.
“Jam and… seeds? I don’t know…”
“It’s a common combination, and they travel well,” Erin tells her. “You might like it!”
“Dainix, have you tried it? What do you think?” Alinua asks him.
“The flavor’s good, but I think there’s something wrong with it?” Dainix says, catching the attention of Erin checking the lacrima’s charge behind him. “Unless it’s the ocean somehow making me feel sick.”
“Ah!” Erin says, an expression of worry on his face. “Then I have good news and bad news.”
Erin’s little ‘oh dear’ fingers in the last panel just kill me. You have my sympathies, Dainix; I also get motion sick very easily. Think Erin or Alinua carries ginger tea?
It’s possible (and would be fascinating to explore if our folks have any allergies!) but I feel like it’s more likely Erin travels so often that he literally forgot to warn them about seasickness.

I feel like seed butter should be hyphenated. Also, I really like the detail of Alinua being new to human foods, and worked hard to fit it in the ballad. Kendal not eating is also a nice character detail.
Seeing the mundane in a fantastical setting is always a treat. “It’s a paste…made of nuts? And you call it…peanut butter?” Granted, I think it also has a lot of crossover with “Those Dang Phones”, but still.
Also, was anyone really surprised that, of everyone there, it was the Fire-type cast member that gets seasick?
I’m reminded of the Kenku chef A La Carte, in the Rolling With Difficulty podcast, who entered peanut butter crackers in a contest to find something Karunadetrassi hadn’t eaten before. Karunadetrassi said they were certainly the best peanut butter crackers he’d ever eaten. The players have joked about hiring A La Carte to replace Finbar as ship’s cook.
I’m sorry Dainix, everyone knows an adventuring party will always have at least one person who always gets seasick and the cosmic die decided it was you.

Let’s be real, seasick is less immediately life threatening, but nut allergy would be less time-consuming for him to deal with. At least assuming it’s only a minor allergy.

Looks like Erin is doing the frequent lacrima recharging that’s been alluded to; makes me wonder whether they’ll need to stop at night to allow Erin to sleep, leaving the ship vulnerable. I also notice Falst isn’t here for breakfast; still down below reading? Is he staying down there because he feels exposed on deck, or is he looking for something specific in those books?
Yeah, you need to be careful about eating on a voyage; I learnt that the hard way on a ferry notorious for sea sickness due to it’s shallow draught. For someone like Dainix, given where he grew up and past experiences, it’s understandable why he’s feeling ill. Still, I wonder what the specifics of Erin’s news will be on Friday.
Seasickness is weird for me, I don’t ever feel nauseous unless I’ve had a rich, heavy, fatty meal. But as long as I’m not actually on a weather deck, if I’m the least bit dehydrated, it doesn’t take much movement for me to get dizzy and disoriented when down isn’t in a parallel direction to the bulkheads. Most strangely, in those cases, I am still fine as long as I can close my eyes.
Being dehydrated will make almost anyone more prone to seasickness. If you find yourself seasick in milder weather than you’re used to, make sure you’re hydrated.
Finally, there’s a point where most people will be seasick. When conditions are that rough, a mariner has to simply learn to deal with it. Microgravity is similar–motion sickness and disorientation are said to be in integral part of spaceflight, with very few people able to reliably handle the situation all the time.
My last case of sea sickness was by a heavy meal too, that and reading while on the boat. Maybe with those factors in isolation I’d have been fine, but not together.
Nowadays I’m fine traveling by sea so long as I stay on the upper deck and spend my time admiring the view.
One tip on trying a PB&J: you want peanut butter made from roasted peanuts. It makes a huge difference.

I think if I remember correctly it depends on what you mean by “make”. A person normally is a mage because there soul can channel an element in a specific way by having channels in their soul when their born and I don’t remember it being explained beyond that, but some can have their channels blocked off which happened to Dainix in his youth. So I think one can be born with blocked off channels and have them be opened later but I don’t think that’s been explained yet.
All that being said we do know that Tess got her lightning magic from being struck by lightning and getting chosen by the sky, so there is some way of making some people into a mage.
Dainix’s exact words were “Apparently there was a slight possibility that any soul channels I had were sealed as I transitioned”. So he definitely has no soul channels now, but he might have before. Also, I think the main reason that people were skeptical of Erin being made a mage was the idea that you can’t easily mess with a soul to that degree, but the exposition we have around the soul shaper monks seems to point to that not being the case. I personally think there are more plausible theories about Erin’s past, but I don’t think the “artificial magus” one is impossible.
Also on the aurora wiki, theres a Word of Red page with a google doc that lists everything Red said about Aurora that could prove or dispprove theories, though some earlier information may be outdated

I don’t like the texture of peanut butter, no matter whether it’s crunchy or smooth. The one case where I do like it is on celery sticks. Which happens to also be the one case where I like celery, as it happens.
My first thought was that Dainix was seasick, but if he is allergic to the nut-butter, then maybe Alinua can help with that. I mean, I’m not sure how life magic interacts with allergies, especially Alinua’s life magic, but maybe she can do something.
Comments are split 50/50 on whether Dainix is seasick or allergic. My first instinct was allergy ‘cause I’m allergic (I can kinda smell this page… urgh) but we’ve been sowing the seasickness seeds for a while. He looks so tired with the underlighting.

ah sea-sickness. the thing that means i have a bad time at sea. (I like sailing and going on boats. I like the sea. but i get seasick so so easily and it is not fun) anyway, tips for Dainix is try staring at the horizon, in particular if you can see some landmark or something. that might make your cochlea not freak out so much. dont try to read things. maybe you’ll be able to get sea-legs. (why am i writing this as if Dainix would be able to recieve this. maybe some other peeps here will find it useful) oh and if the boat is rocking and your having a hard time keeping balance, try a wide stance and try to adjust to keep your core and torso mostly stable via shifting your legs.
Funny you should rebrand PB&J as an exotic thing— my Spanish teacher once told us a story about when she was an exchange student in Spain, where apparently peanut butter sandwiches were a thing, and so were jelly sandwiches, but nobody ever put the two together, and when she made a PB&J in front of the family she was staying with, they were all super grossed out by the notion that someone would put peanut butter and jelly together.
Oh wait, Erin is recharging the water lacrima at the mast. I wonder if it needs to be deactivated for him to do that, and that’s why Dainix is only now feeling seasick, because the stabilizing effects of that lacrima are currently disabled and he can now feel the rocking of the waves.

It’s actually interesting that Dainix is the one getting seasick, since his deal is being “ultra prepared” …except he keeps getting put in situations where he doesn’t have his gear, hasn’t been able to get new gear or maintain his old gear, and now he is in a situation he has no experience with, so he doesn’t actually know what he needs to prep for.
Which is actually a point in Dainix’s favor about them needing more time to get ready and maybe talk to an experienced sailor or two and hire one to come along.

Dainix isnt technically a mage. His soul is still closed to the elements (apparently he was tested). His crucible form is a transmutation.
